The writer made no mistake in "self-narrating" the story. It evokes more passion\feeling if the story is told by the person that it happened to, cos the reader reads it like it is him\her. We felt her pleasure, pain & anguish. We even "died" with her & were escorted into the hallowed chambers of regret together!
This is a work of fiction & the writer needs no better conveyor belt to deliver than assuming the person of the character.
@ OP, nice work & do not mind the little minds that have no literary appreciation. Afterall, what great ones do...
