What Colour Is God? by Nobody: 10:20am On May 09, 2008
Since Dark skin versus Light skin topics are so hot in Nairaland, I decided to have some fun.

We are all created in the image of God, but we're also black, brown, yellow, white, etc.

In that case, what colour do you think God is?

Do you think He is one colour. a combination of colours, or no colour at all?

And if God is one of 'our' colours, then does that make the corresponding race superior to the others

i don't think wondering/theorising on what colour God is is blasphemous. Just as we wonder about different aspects of God's nature, the colour of his skin if it be so, is readily up for speculation. grin

the thing is that just thinking/wondering about it is ok but it always inevitably leads to other thoughts which are blasphemous, thats why i said its boderline blasphemy seeing theres a thin line between an academic discourse and sayn the wrong sturvs, for example the davinci code novel/movie is a fine example of just wondering if leornado da vinci meant this or that, and if isaac newtonmeant this or that and it graduated to theorising diffrent lies, half truths to suit the theories, dont get me wrong im not sum bible hugging fanatic,im a regular dude going clubbn n tha but i just think there are sum sturvs we shouldnt messw with at all, thats why u ll see either a young or old moslem get realli touchy when u say anything that has to do wiv their religion

lol your kidding right?

Jesus was a jew, obviously he was not white. He had olive skin, like Jews, Arabs and other Semitic peoples. His mother was not black. It does not make it so because you wish it so.

I always thought god was red and pasta like, like the flying ravioli monster.

I was watching one televagelist on television the other day who was telling his congregation that jesus appeared to him and he painted a graphic image of what he saw, he said the jesus he saw had a very long blonde hair and very shinning bright eyes, so i guess this depiction is enough for some of you to make your conclusions. . . . . . . .

God is colorless, raceless and tribeless. He's spirit. I still can figure out why humans cannot deal with simple colour? It's like people living in white houses against those living in houses painted red.

I've heard that's a fantastic book. And that is part of the reason that I asked this question. Not because I have a problem with what colour God turns out to be if he has a colour at all, but I want to reconcile people's perception of our racial differences with our perception of God .

'The Color of Water" has little to do with God, it's about a black boy that has a white mom with 12 other siblings . It's based on family issues and race. It's a very good book, I recommend it wink

I know the book hasn't got that much to do with God but there's a part in the book where someone (I think it was the boy) asks his grandmother what colour God is, since they're black and looked down upon but they're supposed to be made in the image of God like everyone else, and his grandmother, not knowing what to tell him, (because whites control all the general propaganda) tells him that God is the colour of water. Since water is transparent, there is no racial oppression in her description of God.

At least that's what I get from it.

Could it be that God is a "colour" that we, as mere mortals, cannot describe?

If so, this could be the reason for so much religious contention.  Each of us has to "make" God into something that we can understand, when, indeed, it's entirely possible that God, were we able to see Him (and not just what He represents) is none of those things.

Possibly?
Re: What Colour Is God? by adetunrayo(f): 4:42pm On May 15, 2008
Why do you want to know God's colour? I think you should think of something better to do.Whether black, white or whatever God will always be God.

My question was intended to provoke thought and discussion. You, unfortunately, are not thinking it through. I never said that the colour of God is in anyway influenced by race, but there is an overwhelming perception that God is a great WHITE man with a long snowy beard, rather like Father Christmas. One would expect however that since God is a spirit, that each race would think of God in the image of their own race. I would like to think that God looked like me, or that I looked like God, whichever way you like it. But at the same time, since noone has ever seen God, there is speculation about what God actually looks like. Which is the reason this question is in the CULTURE board and not in Religion.

God's divinity is not at all in question here. The main issue is: What if God is purple?

That's actually a really interesting idea.

What if there are loads of other colours that human eyes cannot see nor our minds describe?
Re: What Colour Is God? by drrionelli(m): 8:19pm On May 16, 2008
Thank you, sugabelly. This is something about which I've always felt very strongly.

To ascribe any attributes with which we are familiar to a supreme being would seem to compromise that supremacy. Giving the shortcomings of any physical manifestation in terms of exhibiting spiritual worth, it's suprising at all that we humans would do such things!

But, then again, maybe it's not so surprising. Mere mortal minds need to grasp something, so we often seek that with which we are more familiar, rather than attempt to consider that which may be closer to its own--as opposed to our own--reality.

sugabelly {I kind of like the screen name though wink}, I no go mind see the kin suga wey dey for that belle o grin but I digress. Look, you've answered your own qweshun in a way. Like you said, we all know (well, can't include atheists as them no believe hin exist sef) that God is a spirit and since he's a spirit, the spirit has to be either colorless or maybe of variety of color pa pa sef. Shebi e dey for bibeli mimo say God made man out of his own image. Ehn ehn! Since God made man out of his own image, who in turn made a woman from man; therefore, God has no definite color. Whether you black, white, red, purple and so on, as long as you're of the human species, you be God color. If purple pesin dey, then purple be part of God color too. Simple, short, and concise ni yen now. grin Peace! Lest I forget, back to that suga wey dey ya belle--- grin

Gents,

No one died and rose up from the dead to tell us what happens when someone dies. is there a super alive after Dead? that is the same question to know the Colour or nature of God. no one saw GOD even Moses, Budha, Muhamed etc, all of these men did not see God unless they should tell us what is God Like. we Know God by Faith God is a Spirit then he manifest to the men by this spirituality there is no reason to know God he can appear to you as black, white, brown, etc, not God put tribelism racism, colourism in our mind Just men conception
