Find below the ranking of african military. 1 Egypt PwrIndx: 0.7569 2 Ethiopia PwrIndx: 1.1725 3 South Africa PwrIndx: 1.2582 4 Nigeria PwrIndx: 1.3441 5 Algeria PwrIndx: 1.4107 6 Kenya PwrIndx: 1.6237 7 Libya PwrIndx: 1.8428 Sources: US Library of Congress; CIA.gov/CIA World Factbook; EIA.gov; wikipedia.com; energy.eu; SIPRI.org. Some values estimated based on factors available when official sources are lacking. It's worthwhile to nite that although South Africa ranks higher than Nigeria in the scale, this was achieved due to their far superior technological advancement and not military strength |

The fact remains that Nigeria has potential, REAL potential to be a GLOBAL power. Of course that can only happen when TRUE nationalists take over. The weapons in display here are embarrassing to say the least, but I believe in Nigeria's potential to quickly catch up and over take others when the right people take over leadership in Nigeria. Nigeria remains Africa's only true hope for real power and real defence of the African continent. |

Denn: seriously you are justifying using a T55 to face a south african denel rooivalk attack gunship? In this era of ah64 attack helos and augusta apaches? I will take it as a joke. In 2011 just yesterday, at a time when the libyan army was rated 2nd best in Africa behind egypt, france and britain scarambled a few eurocopter tigers and augusta westland gunships to neutralize all the modern tanks and APC's in ghaddafi's arsenal within few days. Your analogy reminds me of the story my father told me during the civil war in october 1967 at calabar sector, when for some reasons ojukwu withdrew their sub machine guns and left them 2 men to one regular hunter's riffle just few hrs when the Nigerian third commando division headed by the black scorpion arrived, tragedy struck, perhaps, the composite of his comrades must have formed the oil sinopec is drilling today in that region. lol their commander lt col festus akagha who replaced captain ogbo orji who within the hour of black scorpion's onslaught has lost 2 limbs, sent ojukwu a desperate telegram with this phrase in part, ''we are holding up to make the supreme sacrifice if need be, we that are about to die, salute you''. You see my friend, i admire your jingoism but the Nigerian army is just a well trained millitia, they dont have what it takes to be called an army yet. Even ojukwu agrees that the fall of calabar sector was largely attributed to the sophistication and superior fire power of the Nigerian army at the time. In his words; ''it is only an overfed bird that challenges his god to a duel'' War is not a ludo game, be careful what you wish for. |

^^^^^ you 'logic' amuses me. Did your brain really concoct using a tank against a gunship? Have you heard the proverb that muscles don't open doors as easily as keys? You call Nigeria's army a militia? What will you now call Ghana's? Military strategy and effective use of resources wins a war and not equipment. |
Re: Pictures Of Military Hard-wares At The Army Day Celebration 2013 by jpphilips(m): 6:58am On Jul 15, 2013 |
Denn: ^^^^^ you 'logic' amuses me. Gun ship is a nickname for attack helicopters so it is not what you are thinking, calm down, no resources has been wasted yet. Lol In modern warfare, gunships are used to neutralize heavy artilleries, tanks and Apc's, they equally provide aeriel support or escort for your ground forces or artilleries if you have any, now, over the years, modern gun ships have not disappointed in that task. I read during the libya conflict that for some reasons, the gunships will be more efficient in takng out those artilleries than using jets. Im not saying we dont have MIG gunship, i think i have seen one at NAF base ph, but the only difference here is the capability of yours vs that of your enemy. In other words, the gun ships are actually the key not the muscle if i should borrow your door analogy, i may not know why most millitaries prefer it that way cos im not a millitary strategist, but i am sure that is how it plays out most times. Now if you wanna use an African country for example, SA has and manufactures a plethora of gunships including the rooivalks which recently is classed in tandem with the AH 64 Apache, can you really say your T55 tanks are safe when your enemy is comming with rooivalks? Take your time and research the model of tanks and APC's in ghaddafi's arsenal which were disgraced by those blazing birds, and yes at that time, ghaddafi's army were rated 2nd best in Africa. The AH 64 apache is equally owned by the egyptian army another african country, boeing who happens to be the manufacturer has announced they can be armed with the hell fire missile and you want to be giant of Africa with T55 tanks in such scenario? good luck with that!! 1 Like |

jp philips: Please tell them! Like I posted earlier on, it is the blind patriotism of most Nigerians, that have made the people in power...to some extent, to keep delivering mediocrity, because they know, that most would accept it, as long as it gets the job 'PARTIALLY' done! The most ridiculous excuse I read here, is that; because Nigeria have peaceful neighbouring countries...the need for advanced and sophisticated military hardware, should be down the 'scale of preference' Anyway, I know the reason why most Nigerians accept substandard way of living...lack of exposure! |

Kingsteve: Stop making all these myopic arguments, the Argument that Nigeria does not need a too-sophisticated Millitary at the moment at the moment is very Valid,It is when a Nation foresees an armed Conflict that it begins a massive Arms Build up,afterall Wars between Nations do not start up suddenly suddenly(sic),they usually build up to the Climax of armed Conflict,so if its ever needed, there will be enough time to Build up the military's capabilities. Financially also, have you ever stopped to consider the amount it takes to maintain Militaries on the scale and sophistication of which you have been posting Pics? 1 United States United States 689,591,000,000 4.7% 2,141 — European Union European Union 272,484,800,000 1.7% 541 2 China People's Republic of China 129,272,000,000 2.1% 74 3 Russia Russia 64,123,000,000 3.9% 428 4 France France 58,244,000,000 2.3% 879 5 United Kingdom United Kingdom 57,875,000,000 2.6% 893 6 Japan Japan 54,529,000,000 1.0% 401 7 India India 46,219,000,000 2.4% 30 8 Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia 44,282,000,000 10.1% 1,558 9 Germany Germany 43,478,000,000 1.4% 593 10 Italy Italy 57 Nigeria Nigeria 1,724,000,000 0.9% now, tell me,which of these Countries above can Nigeria AFFORD to match in Millitary spending to acquire all the HellFire Missiles,Apaches Gunships,Submarines, and whatnot that all you people want? Everything is relativity. in passing;I am sure you all know that Nigeria will still defeat any or all of our nearby countries with this same Military you are Bashing. |

AdeXXander: please nobody is bashing anybody, pundits are creating scenarios and analyzing issues critically. What time did the US have to build up arms, fortify their defences before pearl habor was attacked in 1941? Please kindly ans. jp philips: lolzz....okay A third major naval arms race, involving the United States, Britain, and Japan, erupted at the end of World War I. It was fueled by Japanese efforts to expand their political influence in East Asia and by an American attempt to gain greater political leverage over Britain. This was a race that, for financial reasons, none of the participants wanted to run very far. It ended at the Washington Conference of 1921-1922 with the first major arms-limitation treaty ever and a new political settlement for East Asia. http://www.history.com/topics/arms-race there are more references, but im in a hurry right now, just make a search on Google. The US and Japan had been in a state of mutual suspicion and Preparedness Years before Pearl Harbor,if not so?how do you think that the US was able to decisively trash Japan as quickly as it did,the US was surprised by the attack on Pearl Harbor, not the Attack in itself. |

The first thing she asked me was..."aren't these the weapons that Hitler used?", and I answered... Re: Pictures Of Military Hard-wares At The Army Day Celebration 2013 by chris365(m): 3:07pm On Jul 15, 2013 |
jp philips: you are just ranting rubbish here. To think that Nigeria will engage your helicopters with tanks is hilarious. (we have better as our main battle tanks anyway) first of all you'll need a place to launch your helicopters from, and then bypass our radars (since they are not stealth). Before then our satelites have picked your locations and move our AAA or SAMs to position to take out you helicopters. And please don't talk about your grippen jets cos you don't have an aircraft carrier to move them close to our boarders. Libya was rated second best because of hardware but were defeated by Chad. Which makes me question the ranking methods. And to use a war of Libya against NATO and inside rebels(including defected generals and soldiers) as an example only exposes your S.TUPIDITY. Libya was never a military power, they were like the Saudis that have many weapons but unqualified manpower. It is mentality like yours that your generals used to send your boys to CAR. And see how it turned out. Where were your designer hardware when seleka chased your troops out of CAR and took over their hardware for you to never return? SA had a military during the apartheid regime and even at that they never won any war. SANDF of today is a big joke with few bright generals and ex militants. Good luck beleving you have an army while what you have are just fine hardwares but ill trained personnel and models to market them for you. Am waiting for you to prove that my previous comment you quoted are baseless if you are as smart as you portray yourself. |

Kingsteve: I showed my friend (a lady, who has limited knowledge about military hardware) this thread...especially; the pics, and asked her what was her opinion about the military hardware on display. like you said.. "She has limited knowledge". Do yourself a favour and find out the names of those hardwares and the world powers that are using them till date.. You'll be very surprised. This is not all we have but hardwares that were recently upgraded and refurbished by the Nigerian Army (which is a shift from our former policy of always bringing in experts to do these things. |

jp philips: and the problem with people like you is that you think with your fingers instead of your brain. Are you not a member of the Nairaland? What's the posibilities of you not being a dropout since all you've done here so far is insult people without making any intelligent comment. If south africans are not threatened by Nigeri's military power, then tell me why whenever there's a thread about Nigerian military you people start to bring in SANDF. You are the one that needs education. South africa needs to redeem itself after you were disgraced in CAR by rag tag rebels that don't even have on helicopter before you can think of taking on Nigeria. If militaries were to be ranked by experience and battles won, south africa will not even rank close to top 7. Kenya will cripple your military with your designer hardware, not to talk of Nigeria |
