I attended FUTO Owerri; was an A student until I went to the US to continue. Ended up being a B student here. My point is; there no way you could graduate from any US engineering school and not know what you studied. Besides, you will give up in your first yr because it is very rigorous here than back home. Or they will ask you to leave. Happened to a Nigerian guy who came to study chemical engineering. Very much like you; didn't have a strong background in the fundmentals; guess what? He was a B student before he came here. In others he crammed or copied his way through school, and thought he could do the same here. He paid for it big time. Tried to copy here, the white students exposed him big time. First, he was warned and failed that class. Second, he was politely asked to leave the school. The guy is miserable now. Told him just go and study something easier. Not everyone is born to be an engineer by US/abroad standard. Obviously he would have become an engineer in Nigeria like you had he stayed back home.

The spine of my post is there many Nigerian engineers who are very much like you; know they were incapable of studying engineering but still continue because they are confident they will cheat their way through school. I can tell you, you can never do that in US. YOU MUST USE YOUR BRAIN AND KNOW what you are studying or they will rid you out and tell..you don't belong here.

Why do you want to go back to school, and then write ICAN while in school? Have you thought about the ASUU strikes. If you've given this a whole lot of thought and you feel, you still want to stay in the field of finance, why don't you go for ACCA then? You'll also get a degree with your ACCA if you opt in for the degree programme too. This doesn't add to your stress really, you'll only write a project at the end of the day.

Don't let people discourage you, but be sure this is what you want to do.

I appreciate your concern for doing better and the will to improve yourself.

But here are my thoughts:

1. If you MUST sit for any professional Accounting certfication, then go for ACCA instead of ICAN. ACCA will give you better leverage and recognition, although it is more capital intensive

2. Dont be too sure of achieving a CFA in 3 years, although it may be possible. CFA is a hard nut to crack and accoding to the CFA Institute itslef, the average period it takes people to get qualified is about 4 years. The average pass rate is between 30-45% and people may write a particular level for years.(there are 3 levels)

My Suggestion:
Your 2.2 in Metallurgical & Material Engineering is not bad.
What you need is to consolidate and improve with higher knowledge/qualification. If I were you, I would look for any of the new/emerging special fields in Engineering that are related to your course e.g MECHATRONICS, or NANO TECHNOLOGY etc. You can obtain Masters in this area(s) from a very good university in the UK within 1 year with an option for paid placement(temporary work). This would give you a bridge of knowlegdge in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering......giving you a very good edge in your Engineering field.

You may then proceed to add an MBA in order to get a feel of Management and managerial expertise to apply in your professional career.

My brother,Engineering qualifications are still the hottest and most sought after in the Nigerian job market....do a thorough analysis and you would realise what I am saying. MSc in Mechantonics will make you relevant in the 2 hottest Engineering fields...Mechanical and Electronics

I am an Accountant by qaulification(although with good background in the sciences) but I am looking forward to get a degree/ certification in an Engineering/IT field one day.
