I came across your write-up online and for me you are God-sent, a blessing to our generation. I am 32 years old and a graduate of engineering (metallurgical and material engineering). I was able to make a 2-2. But my brother, I decided not to look for white collar job because I don’t want to keep lying to myself. Although I made 2-2 through hard work, I must confess I obtained that through cramming. My problem was poor fundation(o level).

Now I want to fully go into private business (livestock farming and exportation of agro commodities). I have 2 plots of land and 5 million for this business.But I still don’t feel satisfied without good and sound education. My plan is to go back and start from O’ level while I am doing my business.

My plan goes thus:

O’level (2 years)

1st degree in finance (4 years)

While pursuing my first degree, I plan to write ICAN too

Then, CFA (3 years)

Then, MBA in Finance (2 years)

Finally, PhD in Finance (4 years) – this one may not be in Nigeria.

Please, I want you and wonderful team to advice me. Is it going to be waste of time and resources? Is it going to add value to my life as a business man? Is it going to help me to become a financial expert and an investment expert? And maybe going into part-time lecturing in the future.

My brother, because Mr Jarus (the owner of the site you visit frequently) studied accounting; because Jarushub talks more on accounting doesn't mean you have to study accounting!

May be you're just carried away by the 'sweet talks' from a blogger or you're just a man without vision and ambition..

What is wrong with a 2.2 result in Metallurgical and material engineering?
Why don't you search for a mentor in your field, or were you busy reading an accounting blog while studying engineering?

Okay, if you decide to pursue a new career in Accounting/Finance and then you meet another "blog" with emphasis on Architecture, are you gonna pursue another degree in Architecture..?
Are you also gonna change your career to programming when you encounter nairaland? just because you hear Seun makes cool cash..

Is this how you want to run your race, merry-go-rounding and parabolating around people's career path, just because they are able to carjole you with 'big grammars', 'titles' and lies?

Okay, now you're carried away with the title - ACA, ACCA, ACS..

What happens tomorrow when you see - B.Arch, B.N, MBBS, DVM, M.D, D.O, Bla bla and other empty titles.. na by dat? na how many you fit use?
(btw, I get one and I don't remember using it )

The fact that you didn't talk about your reason and your aim of getting another degree makes it worthless...
You may end up frustrated if you try it.

btw, your O'level result is okay... you just wanna write another O'level cos you know you cannot study Finance with a "science" result.. all other excuses you wrote there are invalid!

So my brother, YOU DO NOT NEED ANOTHER DEGREE..

What you need is a Mentor in your field of study! Thats all.

And I thought they say Wole Soyinka graduated with a 2.2 (or was it 3rd class sef).
Do the maths, Albert Einstein studied maths and performed woefully in it am I right?
Ok let's bring it home, did Goodluck Jonathan your president graduate with a 1st class?
Whoever told you a 1st class or 2.1 is the panacea to all the economic trouble in Nigeria and that it will automatically make you desport yourself in rich and sybaritic lifestyle is lying to you. My God! you have something many people don't have, that's 5 million, why not invest it in your idea and reap the dividends, or did you think Bill gate have a degree when he made it large. My friend, intelligence is multifaceted, one might not be good at all in maths but be a good orator and linguist. One might be poor in English and be a good musician, academic intelligence is simply overrated, common sense would transmutate you from nearly going back to O'level to being the next big thing in Nigeria. You are not to blame though, our eyes have been clogged with books since age 3 and many fear for the worst when actually there is nothing there to fear for. 2.2 can even get you Medicine, as competitive as it is, get 2.2 in physiology or anatomy and apply and you stand a chance like every other person in direct entry.
Back to the discussion, invest in your idea, but if you really want to get the degree in finance, I will not discourage you. No knowledge is wasted and you can't be the first, many 70 year old have started school all over again and we've seen them on papers. But personally, I think all you need do is to up your interest in the livestock farming idea you are budding, if that's where your passion is, then therein lies your success, you are blessed bro.....idea in Agric, degree in Engineering, and 5million cool box to soothe your think process, not many are fortunate as you, what are you waiting for?

Many of us do switch fields but there is no point going as far back as O levels. I would suggest that you take foundation level courses for your new subject matter and then build up upon that. Also note that just subject matter skills are not sufficient. You need to build complimentary skills sets : communication skills - people skills, time management, working in a team, leadership, requisite IT skills etc.

PS: I switched fields. Though it has been a struggle, it is beginning to pay off by God's Grace.

Hmm,this is a very serious case!Well my friend i would advice dat u should just do a PGD in Accounting then masters then Phd.....

2 2 is not a bad result. Just build yourself from there upward. I know couple of guys that graduated with 2 2 and doing their masters in the Us already . life is about moving forward from one failure

With all these exams you path you listed below, What exactly is your plan and what do you hope to achieve?

With A 2-2 in Engineering. if you want to be an accountant all you need to do is to take ICAN or ACCA

And after your exams you are a Chartered accountant If you choose ACCA you would even get a Bachelors in Accounting degree from oxford Brooke Univeristy in the UK

no need wasting your time going through that long tortuous route you listed.

You said you are currently 32. By the time you go through all what you wrote you are already 50yrs and your mates like Jarus are ready to be grandfathers.

In Nigeria most accounting firms dont even require an accounting degree. I think its even a waste of time going to study accounting in school when you can achieve the same thing by taking ICAN and ACCA

guy if u want to go into biz do ur biz, 4 me ur decision dosent make any sense, u can get10 degreez but u will surely use only one good luck tho ur story sounds wacked

Why waste all your life going to school? Life is too short for all those further education pursuit you stated above. Invest the money you have in your Agricultural business, attend some courses in areas related to the business you're doing and grow from there. Don't waste your time studying any Finance at this stage of your life.

you have the money, you have a business plan, you have time . so who cares? you have already achieved. You can start from JHS if you want.. Good luck to you and your ambition.

By the way, i know of a friend who has got 3 degrees(BSC, BA, LLB) to his credit but never had a master degree. so everything is you and your choice.

My Boss studied Vet. Med but now he works in a Financial Services firm and earns over 4M monthly.. CEO studied Mechanical Engineering, go figure how much he earns. it is not about what you majored in but how you switched to the right career. you can do a P.GD then Masters in a Business/Economics leaning. CFA is a good foundation

My brother, u have a foundation in met/mat. No matter the level of craming u did, it is not a complete waste. My humble advice for u is, with the money u have now, leave the country and go study under water welding or pipe line welding..... There is a course like which is highly sort after in the oil sector,

My bro,most of us dat studied what we did at uni dint want it in the first place,it was just out of neccesity buh dat doesn't mean we shld start primary sch all over again.from what I read in the post n by my calculations,u wana go back another 15 years or more in time to achieve ur dream. MY advice to u is simple,if u realy wana go into buiz like u said n u nid an education for dat,then get
an 18month post grad degree in management like I did wen I was in d same situation

Honestly i studied another Bsc however my reason were different i studied Bus admin and swore to have an IT degree before i die(Bucket List) but i graduated with a 2.2 and was learning coding on the side, i never had issues getting jobs over 2.1 or 1st Class guys, because if you are passionate about what you do, you will excel, at the end of the day Certificates are just validations you will still need to rely on your skills, My 2nd Bsc doesn't open doors for me, its my work done that opens doors for me. you have to know what you want in life, after the B.Sc what comes next Masters, PH.D before you know it you will spend a lot of years studying and doing nothing but decorating your resume with certificates and no working experience. You just want education without application. Your problem isn't with what you studied or the results obtained. Simply put, you don't know what you really want to do yet.
