HOW JAJA AND CO LEFT BONNYsadPART 1)

" The same day Carew encountered Chiefs Oko Jumbo and Captain Hart carrying out war plans while Chief Warribo assisted his warriors in emplacing a huge steel canon which was pointed directly at Jaja's section of the town. The state of tension and confusion had become extremely great as women ran in all directions carrying their boxes and other belongings. Next day, the supercargoes now thoroughly alarmed, wrote to the British consul describing the critically tense situation and appealing for help. Carew predicted in his journal that war would break out on Sunday September 12,(1869). This proved correct. Carew did not mention having seen Jaja in the preceding days; but he recorded that at dawn on September 12 Jaja challenged the Manilla Pepples to come out and fight, as he was ready for them. The choice of a sunday has been seen by one scholar as evidence of Jaja's opposition toChristianity. However, when his opponents declined the challenge because it was Sunday, Jaja did not sieze the opportunity to precipitate the war, but obliged them by waiting till the early hours of the following day. Carew recorded- 'at 4 oclock in the morning the natives opened fire; the whole town was in confusion; both the two parties kept firing till 12 am. When Finebone's house took fire. Shots were flying in all directions, some were dropping near the mission premises'. Nonetheless, there was a brief pause and then the firing resumed, lasting till 7.30am on September 14. During the night the majority of the Annie Pepple faction, either because they had run out of ammunition or realized that victory was impossible spiked their guns, embarked in canoes and fled to Minima...Source: King Jaja of the Niger Delta: His Life and Times 1821-1891, by Prof S J S Cookey...
