There's a major misconception with the apartheid era photos i shared here.

Let me clear the air on an allegation that has been thrown to me very often.

Some South-Africans in this thread have accused me of hating them. Some misguided Nigerians in this thread have also accused me of hate towards the South-Africans. This could not be further from the truth, it is a complete lie.

I don't hate South-Africans. From the day i started this thread back in 2013 till today i have shared thousands of very good South-African military photos and videos. There's no South-African in this thread that has done more for the South-African military image than i have. So would someone that hates you, post anything positive about your military? Not to talk of thousands of images?........... It simply makes no sense!

There are ideological differences between myself and the South-Africans. That's a fact. However we don't have to agree on issues, just post pictures.

On the photos from the apartheid era, it's a historical fact, people should not deny their own history.

I label the pictures from the 80s because that is what they are, you cannot change history because you don't agree with the way the photos from an era are labeled.

I'm not posting a White bad South-African soldier, i am stating historical facts for educational purposes.

So why not just call them "South African soldiers"?

During apartheid, who's soldiers were they? I mean, there was minority rule based on oppression and subjugation of the majority of the SA population, and were those soldiers used to some extent to enforce that minority rule? Hard to call it SA soldiers if they participated in such abuse.
Soldiers represent the entire country, during apartheid era, did they? This is my opinion, not my country, so I'm open to correction.
Just wanted your opinion of course, not trying to argue, perhaps an explanation would help.
I should get me a book on this, someday, and read up grin

They are
A. South African
B. Soldiers

Hence, the term "South African Soldiers" is wholly applicable. Its would be the same if I posted pictures of Nigerian troops from the dictatorship years and labelled them "Troops of the X Dictatorship" or whatever - or pictures of the RUF and called them "Freedom-fighters" instead of the more unbiased term "militants".

The only people who use "aparthied soliders" are people who have bias - same with "nazi soldiers" instead of "german soldiers" or "communist soldiers" instead of "russian soldiers". If you are trying to record history you have to use non-biased and unemotional language.

But then again, the man in question who is "simply recording history" labelled Namibian soldiers as South African "Apartheid Soldiers" and refused to amend the error. You and I both know why he does what he does, no point in trying to defend him.

Trust me, not defending anyone, just wondered what role SA soldiers played during that era and how the majority of the population saw them.
Thx for the response

In 1992 69% of white South Africans voted to abolish apartheid during the apartheid referendum vote.

Majority of those soldiers were conscripts, they were forced by law to join the defence force. I take great offence with someone calling them apartheid soldiers since my father also served in the SADF yet voted to abolish apartheid in the 92 apartheid referendum.

Because taking nice pics for Instagram is completely different to being a competent soldier, under a competent chain of command. People are shocked that so many Nigerian soldiers can be killed, because they're assuming a level of competence based on fancy pics. The numbers don't lie. There is no valid reason to have so many men killed, while fighting terrorists on motorbikes.

Any Kenyan here noticed that in every unit(especially Administration police guarding banks or escorting cash) there is a couple of police officers with new rifles?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnvPn3IxIIM

The project will see the over 65,000 general duty police officers and their 25,000 border patrol and anti-stock theft unit counterparts armed with the latest model of weapons.
Early this year, both Kenya Police Service (KPS) and Administration Police Service (APS) started receiving new Spanish made CZ Scorpion EVO 3 A1 airsoft rifles and Belgian-made FN SCAR rifles to replace the aging and cumbersome German-made G3 and MP5 rifles.

Police spokesman Charles Owino says the government has put in a lot of money for police modernisation, mostly in technology and weaponry to the advantage of officers, especially in preventive and investigative capacities.
“The world is changing and therefore the need for law enforcement agencies to embrace the change and move with speed,” Owino says.
In as from February this year, police officers on patrol, at roadblocks and those guarding strategic buildings and institutions have been armed with either beige or black fold-able butt semi-automatic guns that are more convenient and practical either on crowded streets or rural areas.
Introduced in 2009, the CZ Scorpion EVO 3 A1 is a 9mm select fire variant, making it a semi-automatic sub-machine gun. It is a prototype of the Slovakian Laugo sub-machine gun.
Described as simple and reliable, the 26.5 inches long gun gives the user select fire switch from semi-automatic, three round bursts or fully automatic.
It is said to be a highly accurate 1,100-rounds-per-minute weapon perfect for hostage rescue and SWAT missions or special operations.

Nigerian Air Force Regiment
oga henry, just watched the videos of the last boko attack .That was a decimation of our forces!! Why do our forces still use tracked platforms against a highly mobile enemy- wouldn't 8×8 wheeled platforms be better? Those old tank/apc had no protection (active/passive) ,yet the where deployed to the front line-why? The single helicopter (thought they operated in at least a pair) that flew away ,didn't it have guided missiles for those technicals?
Does our airforce even have aerial refueling capability?
Thoes men had no mobile artillary, most had a single or double cartridge with their ak,the tanks seem to exhaust their armament at a point!!!!
Am just sad since I saw the video. The islamic state west africa, seems to have a well trained fighters -our military have a hell of a battle on their hands.

In general, our problem is multiple folds.

Our problem consist of training, equipment, indicipline, welfare and a complete lack of political will to destroy this Boko-Haram monster.

Since the attacks don't occur in Abuja or the Niger-Delta where the oil is pumping out from political leaders would care less.

They might feel sorry today, but give them one week, and they are all back to looting public funds and campaigns. E no concern them.

From Yar'Adua to Jonathan to Buhari. All of them could not give a hoot.

Even before you get to the equipment part, you can see the discipline and leadership are major issues in the Nigerian army.

When troops are not disciplined, you start hearing statements like being caught unaware or a Boko-Haram that has 12.7mm's mounted on gun-trucks had more weapons than friendly forces that had Tanks.

We need to sincerely deal with discipline before we start talking about weapons. It was not a weapon issue at that base, it was a discipline issue and a lack of strategy.

Tracked platforms are slow, but you have to remember that you make do with the equipment you have, especially when you consider we don't really have money to buy new shiny weapons like Algeria or benefactors like Egypt.

The Vickers were adequate for the mission. The Vickers have a 105mm as their main armament.

An average Nigerian gun-truck also carries a 12.7mm HMG, just like enemy forces have.

It's not an equipment issue.

The Nigerian Air Force has made tremendous progress over the past 3 years and have inducted or ordered neatly 70 aircrafts in the last 6 years but the service is also very stretched.

The Air Force is in 3 states in the Northeast, the Air Force is in Zamfara, Benue, Taraba, Jos and Kaduna, the Air Force is also in the Niger-Delta.

The Air Force is also carrying out it's own independent operations targeting BHT.

We need a minimum of 50 Attack Helicopters to fully cover Nigeria.

We can no longer under-estimate BHT, the last 6 months have taught us that. However Army HQ seem to be clueless.

PRESS RELEASE ON THE ATTACK ON 157 TASK FORCE BATTALION DEFENSIVE LOCATION AT METELE IN GUZAMALA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BORNO STATE

1. The attention of the NA has been drawn to several social media, print, electronic and online publications about the recent attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele. Whilst it is true that there was an attack on the location on 18 November 2018, it has however, become necessary to correct several misinformation being circulated with regards to this unfortunate event.

2. It is important for the public to note that the NA has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who fall casualty in action. Out of respect for the families of our gallant troops, the NOKs are first notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating the grief family members would bear, were they to discover such from unofficial sources.

3. Furthermore, it suffices to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion. Whilst it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists; to misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not. So far, the situation is that the location is under control as reinforcing units have been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation.

4. The NA sincerely, wishes to thank the various arms of government, MDAs and sister security agencies that have stood with her in these trying times; by commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price for the defence of our dearly beloved country. The necessary support being given the NA by the Federal Government and the goodwill of the Nigerian populace will undoubtedly continue to spur the NA towards the ultimate defeat of the highly degraded BHTs.

5. This is for your information please. You are kindly requested to disseminate same through your various media channels. Thank you.

My loyalty is first and foremost to Nigeria and they Nigerian army, however the army has not declared any figure, until then we watch and see for an update from the army.

However irrespective of the figures the army might release, the ineffeciancy of the Nigerian army with regards to the recent Metele attack and performance over the last 6 months require deep overhauling.

The Nigerian army high command shouldn't delude itself to thinking all is well or this was just a one off incident.

“The attack came at about 6 pm on Monday evening”, one soldier who managed to escape the onslaught from the terrorists, told Premium Times. "When the soldier on top of the observation post alerted that a large number of Boko Haram fighters were advancing, we all got alarmed as we took cover and waited within the base in Metele".
Soldiers didnt observe a dawn/dusk stand to - failure not on the soldiers part, but on leaderships

“The fight did not last for more than 45 minutes, but it was bloody because the Boko Haram fighters had more armament advantage than the soldiers.

We have suddenly lost our spirit of launching attacks because of lack of resources to prosecute the battle. Many of us are ready to do our best, but there has been no requisite support from those sending us out there.

“As I am talking to you now, we have about 70 corpses of soldiers littering the battleground in Metele and when we went to evacuate them on Monday, the Boko Haram gunmen came out in large numbers from all angles – so we had to abandon the corpses after just picking five of them. We left most of the corpses there as I am talking to you now.

“Our morale has been dampened so badly – not only because we are not given our due allowances; but for the fact that we have been outgunned by the Boko Haram.

“The situation has gone so bad that it has gotten to a stage that soldiers would be rushing to pack up their camps and flee upon hearing the news that Boko Haram fighters are advancing", he said.
