Now here's a proper argument to be had. You present both economic and political issues. I'd like to separate them thus in my answer:

1) politically, China is not a democracy and rightly should not be part of self-chosen democracies;

2) China is a rising economic power and should be accommodated in multilateral institutions;

3) middle and lesser powers should find a balance between 1 and 2 above, without getting entangled in great power intrigues.

I'd argue until 2007/8, our continent, led by Mbeki, Obasanjo and Bouteflika had managed to find that balance. Mediocrities after led us to the drift where our fate was determined elsewhere.

As a South African, I'm pleased we're slowly clawing back a coherent foreign policy where we're getting back to being taken as seriously as we were back under pres Mbeki. Not as a lackey of the west or east, but as an independent player, with independent views.

An example: SA is the 5th largest source of FDI on the rest of the continent, but distant sources like Russia, Turkey, UAE are taken more seriously. All our fault, because of the past Zuma administration.
The current administration intends changing that, and yes the outside world will notice.
