I touched a nerve by equating Russian equipment to poor-man's military. cheesy

Don't worry, you can continue buying your Russian and Chinese things because they suit your budget. We're not there.

We have always bought a mix of Chinese, Russian and Western equipment.

It is your most unfortunate ignorance which touched my nerve. That's what i find pitiable.

You bought Russian/Chinese because you were either sanctioned by the West or you simply couldn't afford those platforms. Stop your silly justification for cheap things.

The EC725 will replace the Oryx on paper.

Cause Denel's old antelope out performs that bird. In SAAF operational environments the EC725 will be like Super Frelon promising a lot on paper but in reality the helicopter was equally matched in performance by later models of the Puma.

Large arms acquisition is the way forward or else will end up with multiple weapon systems serving the same purpose at different efficiencies. By large acquisition I don't mean arms deal type of acquisition where all needs are bundled into one deal.

But deals like the Badger IFV.

The best deal would for an international company partnering with Denel or Paramount and offer a highly modified bird. The A109's performance is disappointing.

So do you suggest an acquisition of a Denel modified Super Puma?

A Super Puma would be like modifying the Oryx offering nothing new.

Maybe a local EC275.

Some seem to forget that Western countries sell their military equipment limited, downgraded with abusive conditions of control ,And use of political pressures in their markets , Even for allied big countries like Egypt ect...You can't modify a single bolt without the congress vote and permissions , and i don't talk about security of supply and ammunitions in case of war with another country close to usa , that's why some countries go for russians you get what you want and you can modify what you want , also make upgrades in other countries with no russians society , on it and the Russians are better in many field .

The issue is the budget or the lack of it..... I think what ever we would acquire would be more like keeping the capability than to add on it.

We don't buy from the US, we buy from the Europeans .... Eastern Bloc weapons are inferior, it's something we debated over and over again. But of course everyone will defend his own country's purchases.

That's just it Mike. For our requirements the Oryx still outperforms most of the medium helis out there, more modern though they may be. They ain't cheap, plus we'd need to extensively modify, piling on more cost.
As for funding, let's take the Oryx replacement for example: we'd have to induct it gradually in any case. Currently there's no way we'd be able to put together the finance structure/mechanism for the sort of acquisition we normally do (which is best way forward btw). So if we committed to a baseline of paying for mimimum 2/annum until full strength, that'd suit our pocket all things considered. Of course we'd increase that number as and when budget cycles allow.

Or we could start a budget allocation now per financial year, ring-fenced for the start of the acquisition at say 2025. And yes, along Badger lines.
To conclude, my concern is 2-fold: available platforms offer no improvement as far as hot and high performance goes, burdening us with the additional cost of modification; and there doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency to what is a vital impending procurement.

As for the Agusta A109, I've mentioned before that I'm a huge fan of that reliable workhorse the BK117. They were all supposed to go to the cops but the guys down in PE swear by the BK. So for the light utility, instead of the underwhelming A109, we should've upgraded from the BK117 to the EC635.

No, that's usually only the US and it's usually only equipment with sensitive components.

Russians don't have to worry about selling sensitive equipment because they know the Americans aren't going to bother stealing it

The only thing the Russians have to keep secret is top of the range air-defence equipment ( which they hardly ever sell).

Exactly, the Algerians had to fit French avionics on their Su-30s otherwise without them they're just bigger targets to hit.

They then proceed in fitting their Hinds with South African avionics to make them deadly.

Algeria knows that their Russian equipment would be out performed by Western systems either from Morocco or across the Mediterranean that's why they went West for the important parts.

false , for your information algerian su-30 MKA is based on the indian su-30 MKI but MKI have israelian component that's why they change them with russian and french component , if algerian take some french avionics why did they refuse the Rafale ? ? he have the same avionics , french president came in algeria to beg for the contract and algeria refused .

and now their is the Su-30 SM better then the MKI /MKA and algeria will be happy to upgrade it's MKA to SM advanced version in some years . without talking about the beast su-35 the best 4++ génération jet in the world .
