In a bid to commemorate the 45 years anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Oyo State chapter of the NYSC has taken a free medical outreach to the prisoners in the Oyo State prison yard, Agodi, Ibadan. The NYSC state coordinator, Mrs Ifeoma Anidobi, while addressing the inmates said, it is imperative to note that one of the major cardinal points of the NYSC is to preach national unity, hence, the reason NYSC has deemed it fit to bring the medical outreach to the prisoners, knowing that people from different regions of the country are in prisons. “NYSC was inaugurated during the General Yakubu Gowon administration in the year 1973, three years after the civil war with the major aim of upholding the national unity and integration,” she said. She further advised the prisoners to be of good conduct and to try as much as possible to learn meaningful skills that would be useful for them after leaving the prison. Also, she promised that the Oyo State NYSC will ensure that the corps members who are law graduates currently serving in the state provide free legal aid to the prisoners in need of such. The inmates were, however, advised about maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, as a precautionary measure to avoid any chronic health challenge that might hinder their well being while in the prison. The Deputy Comptroller General of the prison, Mr Olufemi Ogunyadi, while commending the NYSC for the free medical care, disclosed that the Oyo State prison, Agodi, is currently housing over 1,000 inmates. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/nysc-45-prisoners-get-free-medical-care.html

A new national minimum wage will not materialize by the end of September as envisaged, Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has said. The September date was just a date to conclude negotiation on minimum wage, Ngige said while speaking with journalists in Abuja yesterday. Outlining the work ahead Ngige said: “The committee on the new National Minimum wage is expected to conclude its work by the end of September and present its report to the government for deliberation and approval.” He also said it would be tabled the National Council of State before an executive bill is sent to the national Assembly on the issue. He pointed out that the capacity to pay by employers was also paramount in the deliberations on the minimum wage. He said it was for this reason that the committee embarked on zonal public hearing across the country in order to get the input of all those concerned including state governments and the organised private sector. It was in the course of the zonal public hearings that many state governments made different submissions ranging from N22, 000 to N58, 000 monthly from the current monthly wage of N18,000. The governors, he said, were also of the belief that for the new minimum wage to become effective, the current revenue allocation formula will have to be reviewed in favour of the states and local government. He said some other states are also of the view that the minimum wage should be maintained at the current N18, 000 in view of the inability of some states to pay the current wages. He said even though it was not an easy task, the committee was making progress in its assigned responsibility, pointing out that it was in order to carry everybody, including the states and private sector along, that six governors were elected to be members of the committee as well as representatives of the organised private sector. On the threat of non teaching staff of universities to resume their suspended strike as a result of government’s failure to honour the terms of their agreement, the Minister said government was sourcing the N6 billion needed to pay them their earned allowances as contained in the agreement. He said that about 95 percent of agreements currently being paraded by trade unions in the country were signed before the Buhari government came into office in 2015, adding that most of such agreements had no timeline for implementation. He also said many of the agreements signed by the last government were not implementable because of the amount involved. He said what is important in all collective bargaining agreement is the ability to pay what is being demanded and what is agreed upon. He appealed to striking health workers to return to work while negotiations continue on their demands. He added that the delay in the implementation of their signed agreement was as a result of failure of the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission to defend the two different figures presented to a government high powered committee. He said the committee had directed the commission and the Federal Ministry of Health to recompile the figures for onward submission to the committee for deliberation. NLC warns against missing timeline for payment The Nigeria Labour Congress was not available for comments last night. But it had earlier cautioned the Federal Government against missing the timeline for the implementation of the new national minimum wage for workers. The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, handed down the warning on Monday during a pre-May Day symposium jointly organised by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress in Abuja. Wabba said, “The organised labour will ensure that the timeline set by the Tripartite Committee on the Implementation of the National Minimum Wage is not altered.” He added, “Workers, who create wealth, must also be well taken care of as we are not unmindful of the situation of the Nigerian workers, particularly with the increasing inflation in the land. Also, Mr Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), recently said the Federal Government was committed to ensuring that the new National Minimum Wage meets the present economic realities. Speaking at a dinner and award night organised to mark the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) 40th Anniversary celebration he said the Federal Government is conscious of the need to bring wages to meet economic realities. “I am confident that the outcome of the assignment would address the issue of social imbalance, inequality and the wide gap of poverty in the country. President Muhammadu Buhari about six months ago inaugurated a 30-manTripartite National Minimum Wage Committee, calling on the members to come up with a fair and decent wage for Nigerian workers. Buhari had said at the time that re-negotiation of a new national minimum wage had become imperative because the existing minimum wage instrument had since expired. “We all know that the last minimum wage instrument has expired. “It is in recognition of the need to ensure a fair and decent living wage that the Federal Government put in motion necessary mechanisms so that we can today inaugurate this large committee with a big task ahead of you. “You are all aware that during the period following the increase in petrol pump price in May 2016, a technical committee was established to examine and make recommendations to government, the measures to be adopted to cushion the envisaged painful effects of the increase on workers and the Nigerian populace at large.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/fg-why-new-minimum-wage-cant-be-ready.html

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Tuesday, announced the release of the results of the mop up examination conducted for candidates, who were rescheduled for the UTME on Saturday, May 26. The results can be assessed on JAMB portal- www.jamb.org.ng The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the announcement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja. The board had recently, conducted a mop up examination for over 12, 000 candidates in some of its centres across the country. This included those whose biometrics could not be captured during the initial period of the UTME in March, those who were yet to see their results and have not been involved in any form of malpractice. Others included those who were unable to print out their e-slip before the earlier examinations and those whose centres were cancelled for suspected malpractices. On the admission process, Benjamin told NAN that the board frowned at some institutions that have breached the constitutional guidelines for the entire process by making advertorials before the policy meeting. He explained that all institutions must note that they are not to make any form of adverts for admissions into their schools until after the policy meeting. According to the spokesman, this is because the meeting is the only authorised body that approves admission process for every preceding year. “Advertising before the policy meeting is a violation and abuse of the entire process. “They must recall that at the meeting, all proceedings, rules and regulations guiding the admissions are discussed and unanimously approved by all stakeholders. “However, a list of institutions that breached this rule are being compiled by the board and to be forwarded to the appropriate body for sanction.” Benjamin added that in view of the above, those who intend to make admission adverts before the slated meeting, are urged to have a rethink and halt. He also noted that the 2018 policy meeting of the education sector was coming early to allow institutions begin an early admission. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/jamb-releases-results-of-rescheduled.html

The Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, on Monday, said that the Federal Government has threatened to have it proscribed, if it fails to suspend its ongoing strike. JOHESU’s President, Comrade Biobelemoye Josiah, said this while speaking at an emergency consultation meeting of all state and zonal leaders held in Abuja. He said the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige, issued the threat at a reconciliation meeting with the union last week. He said that while the health workers were willing to suspend their industrial action, the federal government must, however, demonstrate sincerity of purpose in the processes activated towards achieving a peaceful resolution of the dispute. He also accused the Incorporated Trustees of Kingdom Human Rights Foundation (KHRFI) of obtaining an order directing the JOHESU to suspend its industrial action through deceptive means. Josiah said that the counsel to KHRFI, Barr. Nnamdi Okere, lied to the National Industrial Court that JOHESU was not involved in any reconciliation/negotiation process, and for that reason, there was no resolution to the industrial dispute in sight. Based on that false claim, the JOHESU President said, the court ordered the health workers to suspend the strike and attend any reconciliation process that may be put in place by the Federal government. He said: “Last Tuesday, at a meeting with the negotiators and mediators from the Federal Government’s side, rather than talking meaningfully on how to have the disputes resolved, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, said we should stop the strike based on the order of the National Industrial Court. “But we told him that as we speak, we have not been served the court order; we have not seen the court documents. He later threatened to have us proscribed, if we don’t obey the court order and suspend our strike. “Before that meeting, we sent out a message asking them to tell the court to send a bailiff to serve us the order. But, that didn’t happen. “We are not afraid to be served the court order, because even the constitution gives us the right to challenge the order. But we were not served until 5:39pm last Friday. “We want Nigerians to know about the level of dishonesty and insincerity of the government team, who are bent on giving us a bad name to have us destroyed. “Even the NGO that went to court misled the Judge. It said that there was no reconciliation cum negotiating team in place. But such a team is in place and have met with us over five times before the court order was obtained.” The highpoint of the meeting was a voice vote by delegates at the meeting to continue the strike until their demands are met. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/nigerian-govt-threatening-to-proscribe.html

A former Finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, has called out the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila for trying to distort the truth in her book: “Fighting Corruption is Dangerous.” Okonjo Iweala said the Majority Leader tried to change her statement in the book concerning the N17 billion in the 2014 budget for his personal interest. Okonjo-Iweala said the claim by the lawmaker that she and her aides added their own projects to the budget was false and a move to thwart the truth. The former Minister said in the book that “By the time we presented budget on December 16, 2014, the oil prices has further fallen down to $58 per barrel. We were prepared and knew we had to trigger the additional expenditure and revenue measure in 2015 to make the budget work. “This would be tough, given that we had entered election year. Indeed, legislators initially refused to accept pay cuts to their regular N150 billion budget, despite dwindling revenues. “But, eventually agreed to 13 percent cut against backdrop of Ministers accepting voluntary 50 percent to their basic salaries. “In a tough session with the National Assembly ad-hoc committee on budget (made up chairs of Finance committee and Appropriation Committee of both chambers and other leaders of National Assembly), an additional N20 billion was reintroduced as election expenses for the National Assembly members. “We insisted that the amount should be dropped because it nullified the 13 percent cut to their statutory budget, but managed N20 billion figure by only N3 billion to N17. “This become the price to have 2015 budget passed.” But Gbajabiamiala had, however, claimed that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala revealed in her book that she and her aides had “padded” the 2014 budget and had infused their own projects. The lawmaker also claimed that lawmakers had fought with the ex-Minister over the alleged “padding.” However, Okonjo-Iweala, in her response on Facebook on Sunday, faulted the Majority Leader’s claim, saying there was nothing of such. She wrote, “It has come to my attention that mischief makers are again trying to distort what is written in my book, ‘Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: the Story Behind the Headlines’, for their own political purposes. “One more time, It is important that people read the book for themselves. In the case of the N17 billion, the book does not talk of bribe. It indicates that lawmakers increased the budget by N17 billion and we had to accept that to move on; hence, the term ‘price to pay’. “The reason for discussing what happened is that this approach needs to change. The country must clear up and clarify its budget process for the future to improve. “Those like Hon Gbajabiamiala trying to introduce lies that myself and my aides put in our own projects and lawmakers were fighting with me on that basis are playing their usual cynical games and Nigerians are tired of that! “Lies obscure the country’s problems and do not allow us to improve. There were and there still are politicians in the National Assembly trying to do the right thing. The book also points that out. “Such well meaning legislators should not allow their strident colleagues to twist matters and divert attention from the need to improve the country’s budget process so our young people can see a better side of their country.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/okonjo-iweala-speaks-on-padding-2014.html

A bitter lady has called out popular Nigerian cross dresser after he allegedly defrauded her of N100K. The lady wrote: Bobrisky, what makes you think you can bully me out of my hard earned money? Against my better judgement i trusted you over this simple biz transaction just bc of a mutual friend. I told this mutual friend in Nigeria to reach out to Bobrisky for a promo since I don’t follow Him on IG. My friend did & he agreed to do the dance promo for #100k after the bargain. He demanded we transfer full payment last week Tues saying he was free to do the dance. My friend made it clear when we needed the video as we planned on setting up a #OneShotChallenge competition with it. Bob agreed to have the video ready by last Tues. I have screenshots of this conversation. I went ahead and transferred 100k immediately. But after he confirmed the money, he went mute & stopped reading my messages. My friend contacted him last Tues night & he promised to do it the next day (Wedsnesday) but he didnt do it. Based in his unreliability, she contacted him on Wedneday night & asked him to return the money back to glogeworld, but he told her the video was ready & would be posted last Thurs morning, which she accepted. Through all this, I kept calm. Fri nothing, Saturday nothing, on Sunday nothing, so I sent him a message last Sun to return the 100k back to my account. My friend also told him to return the money BC we are not interested anymore. 1 week later on Tues, Bobrisky ignored our request to return the money and in a bid to cover up his failure, he posted the dance without informing me & without sending the dance to me on WhatsApp. What dishonesty! Who does that in business? I am a fashion influencer for many companies in USA includin Amazon, and an Ambassador to many companies in the US. When they pay me for anything, I have to deliver it in a certain time frame. In business you have to respect your customers or anyone that pays you money for any service. They are the reason you pay your bills. If you keep gettin bad reviews no one would want to deal with you. Bobrisky, instead of apologizing, you chose to insult me on top of my money ah! You can’t be taking people’s money crookedly. It’s unethical in business. Bobrisky, if you have any iota of honesty in you, Please, return my money! http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/lady-blasts-bobrisky-after-he-allegedly.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC), has proven to be the stumbling block to the collective quest for national cohesion, happiness and economic prosperity for all citizens It added that the APC has demonstrated that it was never a political party designed for governance and development, but a contraption for oppression and vendetta. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party insisted that “already, there are plans by APC to extend the clampdown on opposition leaders to regular citizens, who have seen through their lies and deception and are in open agitation to vote them out in 2019. “We note that since the recent boast by President Muhammadu Buhari on his abuse of rights as a military ruler, there has been an escalation of clampdown on citizens, particularly, the opposition, in various parts of our country. “It is also instructive to note that since it came to power by deceit and propaganda in 2015, the APC has done nothing except actions and comments that promote hatred, violence and daily bloodletting among Nigerians; causing of disharmony among arms and tiers of government in addition to undermining our democratic and security institutions. “It is also on record that the APC has not formulated any clear-cut programme for good governance; it has never called its government to order in their recklessness, particularly, on the documented abuse of human rights and violation of our constitution and democratic order. “The APC has never intervened in the bloodletting in various parts of the country, caused to fester by its incompetent and insensitive administration; it has remained aloof, giving credence to allegations that such disturbances serve its purpose of promoting confusion to frustrate the conduct of a credible, free and fair general elections. “Despite attempts in blaming past administrations, it has since become clear that the on-going barefaced looting of our national treasury, particularly through the sleazy oil subsidy regime under President Buhari’s supervision, coupled with government’s gross incompetence and official highhandedness, are directly responsible for the economic hardship and escalated violence in our nation today. “The harsh policies of the APC administration, which has scared away investors and President Buhari’s unrelenting de-marketing of our nation in the international arena, have led to the massive closure of businesses, unprecedented loss of jobs, mass unemployment, dearth of foreign investments and total stagnation of our economy. “Uptil now, the APC has not offered any explanation to the leaked memo detailing the looting of N9 trillion at the NNPC, the budget padding in ministries, departments and agencies, stealing of billions in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) intervention funds. “We want the APC and its leaders to know that they are not bigger than our nation. Nigerians have already reached a consensus against them and no amount of harassment, arrests and trampling will cow the citizens in their resolve to vote out APC in 2019.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/apc-is-nigerias-biggest-problem-pdp.html

This is as former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, called on the Federal Government and its relevant agencies to come to the aid of scores of persons affected by cholera outbreak in Mubi, Adamawa State and Wulari settlement in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. The funds which would be disbursed by the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund is geared towards supporting the response to a deadly cholera outbreak in Yobe State, north-east Nigeria, that could affect thousands of people. According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), since the beginning of the outbreak, which was officially declared in four local government areas on 28 March, a total of 404 cases and 15 deaths have been reported, representing a 3.7 per cent case fatality rate. The United Nations and its partners activated an immediate emergency response in the affected communities in support of the State Ministry of Health. However, additional resources are needed to ensure that the outbreak is contained, especially ahead of the rainy season when the risk of outbreaks and spreading of water-borne diseases is higher. UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Edward Kallon said the funds would enable humanitarian partners to provide safe water to over 1.6 million people, improve sanitation for thousands in the affected communities, and boost the technical and human resource capacity in hotspot areas so that cholera could be detected early and treated promptly. Raising awareness of how to identify, prevent and treat cholera is also a key part of the response to the outbreak. He said: “Cholera outbreaks can potentially impact and kill thousands of people, especially women, children and men who are living in overcrowded places such as camps for internally displaced persons. Surveillance and early detection are key to limiting the number of fatalities and the spread of the outbreak. “Acting swiftly is pivotal if we are to prevent high mortality rates. These funds will help the UN and partners strengthen the capacity of community health personnel and equip local health facilities with diagnostic and treatment equipment as the rainy season gets underway and access to some of the affected localities might be impacted by flooding.” He observed that “the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria’s north-east, that has spilled over into the Lake Chad region, is one of the most severe in the world today, with 7.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2018 in the worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, and 6.1 million targeted for humanitarian assistance. “The Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), managed by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs under the leadership of the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, was created to provide funds in a prioritised, flexible and timely manner so those who are most in need of life-saving support. “The NHF is one of 18 country-based pooled funds and was launched during the Oslo Humanitarian Conference for Nigeria and the Lake Chad region in February 2017. “To date, the NHF has raised $49.4 million in contributions and pledges, thanks to the generous support of Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Ireland, Switzerland, the Republic of Korea, Canada, Spain, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Arab Gulf Program for Development, Malta, Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka. Of those $49.4 million, $35 million – including this latest $2 million allocation — have now been allocated to various organisations in support of the humanitarian response.” Atiku called for government intervention on Friday against the backdrop of the death of 12 persons already from the scourge of the disease in Mubi and four in Kano. In a statement by his media office, the former Vice President regretted the deaths that had occurred since the outbreak of the disease and urged the governments at both state and federal to expedite action by coming to the aid of those infected and stop the spread of the disease before it gets deadlier. Atiku Abubakar noted that government intervention had become inevitable because the local authorities did not possess the manpower to handle an outbreak of cholera or of any disease of this magnitude. He called on Nigerians especially in the affected regions to be on high alert and make it a priority to observe personal and environmental hygiene. The Waziri Adamawa reminded that an operation centre had also been set up in Mubi General Hospital where all suspected cases should be reported to 08031230359 and 07080601139. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/un-donates-2m-to-tackle-cholera.html

Professor Chiedu Moghalu has announced his intention to contest under the umbrella of the Young Progressive Party (YPP). The former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday. Speaking on his aspiration, he explained that despite invitations from various political parties, his vision for a radically new political leadership for Nigeria made him distance himself from the old order. He said: “Would the party I join share my vision of leadership as one of service and accountability? Would it be focused on the youth and our future while inclusive in its membership? “Would it be nationwide in its spread and appeal as opposed to an ethnic or sectional focus? And would the party, from the standpoint of electoral strategy, be a viable platform with a structure to prosecute the struggle for a New Nigeria that is focused on the future and not the past? “I am here today to announce that in response to the parties of the past, in response to umbrellas that block out the light of hope, and brooms that sweep away truth and replace them with lies, in response to the parties of tired old tricks and tired old systems and tired old men, I and millions across Nigeria will choose the YPP – the party of today and tomorrow “The Young Progressive Party has over the past year set up full and final structures – extensive offices, with an extensive pool of party officials, operatives, volunteers across the country. This is a grassroots-oriented party. Matched with our historic network and cell leaders across Nigeria in every one of the 6 geo-political zones of the country, this is a union made in possibilities,” he stated. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/moghalu-finally-reveals-political-party.html

Indeed, honest people still exist even with the current harsh economic situation that is enough to completely change someone’s psych. This particular honest person, a cleaner at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos State, Charity Bassey recently did the unexpected when she found a nylon containing $6,000 and turned it in to security officials at the terminal. The cleaner was on duty at the departure wing of the airport when she picked up the item from the floor of the toilet. According to her, she was standing in front of the toilet when a passenger drew her attention to something inside the toilet. I went in and saw the small black nylon on the floor. It looked dirty and rough, you won’t know it is money that was inside it. I picked it, felt some notes inside and took it to the customer care. I was given a glove to bring out the contents and I counted 60 pieces of $100 dollar bills. When asked what was the reward for her honesty, she said nothing. Nobody gave me anything, the manager, company or even the owner who later came back looking for the money. I am however, not discouraged as I do my best to do a good job with clear conscience. This is not the first time I am picking up forgotten items like wallets, phones, small bags and even money. I have always returned them to the frontline desk or customer care desk. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/mmia-airport-cleaner-returns-6000-found.html
