PoliticsBiafra: Intersociety Releases Names Of Agitators ‘killed, Injured’ (MUST READ) by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:08am On Jun 20, 2018
International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, Intersociety, on Tuesday, released the names of 150 Biafra agitators allegedly killed and those injured by the Nigerian Army.

This was contained in a statement signed by the board chairman of Intersociety, Emeka Umeagbalasi and Head Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Obianuju Igboeli.

It included Chinedu Uwandu (Imo State), Ogochukwu Joseph Ogbah (Abia State), Henry Ogar Ogoyi (Cross River State), Kelechi Meshach Metu (Imo State), Odika Osime Chukwuma (Anambra State), Onyeka Ujam (Enugu State), Celestine Aga (Enugu State), Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Agbayisi (Anambra State), Blessing Adaku Odoemena (Abia State) and Imo Emele Uduma Okemini (Abia State).

Others are Emmanuel Ugochukwu Nwachukwu (Imo State), Okwudiri Samuel Obika (Imo State), Anayo Anyanwu (Imo State), Udoette Miracle Udofia (Akwa Ibom State), MaCois Palibor ( Bayelsa State), Ogbogu Okoro (Abia State), Chigozie Ikechukwu (Abia State), Ikenna Okorie (Abia State), Adiele Paul (Abia State), Ahamuefuna Austin Nnamdi (Imo State) and Kelvin Nnamdi Ikeme, a 25-yr-old trader who was allegedly shot and killed by soldiers on 30th May 2018 along Uratta by Port Harcourt Road, Aba.

Intersociety also gave the names of the shot and injured as Kingsley Olisakwe, Chinedu Okeke, Nzube Elekwa, Peter Ohiagu, Wisdom Joseph, John Evans, Peter Chukwu Blessing, Chibuisi Obialo, Obinna Nwaobasi, Ginika Basil, Uche Ikechukwu, Odinaka Onyeka, Michael Solomon, Eje Friday, Onwuabuchi Alozie Uwa, Moses Okeke and Isaiah Mmaduabuchi.

The statement said, “The Army massacre operation was carried out under the guise of “September 2017 Nigerian Army Python Dance 11 in Southeast Nigeria, executed by the Chief of Army Staff and backed by the Defence Headquarters. “We had further informed statistically that the Army massacre took place in three locations of Afara-Ukwu in Umuahia with not less than 105 deaths; Isiala-Ngwa with not less than 20 deaths and Aba with not less than 25 deaths.

“While the massacre at Afara-Ukwu lasted for three hours, having started at about 3.26pm on 14th September 2017 and ended before 6.30pm same day; the Isiala-Ngwa killings majorly took place on 12th September 2017 at Isiala-Ngwa Military Checkpoint. The Aba Army shootings and killings took place between late night of 12th September and early hours to later morning of 13th September 2017 as well as on 14th September 2017.

“It was further discovered that not more than 15% of the bodies of the slain were recovered and interred by their families, while the rest were picked by soldiers of the Nigerian Army and taken to undisclosed locations where they must have been buried in shallow and mass graves-a pattern that had been consistently used by the Army since August 2015 when the violent crackdown on unarmed and defenseless pro Biafra activists was launched by the present central Government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The manner and pattern of killing of eight unarmed pro Biafra activists whose lifeless bodies were found in one of the bushes in Umuahia days after the Afara-Ukwu Army massacre of 14th September 2017; clearly showed that some bodies of those killed at massacre arena were forced to be buried in secret locations by their arrested colleagues who, after burying their slain colleagues at gunpoint, got tied, blinded and shot dead within the secret locations where their slain colleagues were forcefully buried.

“The eight bodies found in one of the said bushes had their hands tied behind their back with marine rope and possibly blinded before being shot dead to erase traces of culpability or accountability of the culprit soldiers. Technically, it is an act of impossibility to tie or chain or rope a human body after he or she had been killed.

“Owing to threats of invasion, violence, death or arrest, detention and torture by soldiers and police, Special anti Robbery Squad, SARS, operatives; most families and friends or associates of the slain are forced to keep perpetual mute over their “missing” loved ones.

“These have also forced them into mourning the slain in acute silence, shock, frustration, anguish, sorrow and anger. Some of them willing to seek justice including open inquiries over the whereabouts of their loved ones are hampered by teething poverty level in the country.

“Totality of these has further resulted in untimely death of some of them while scores of others have become victims of traumatic disorder and post stress disorder. Many children of the slain victims investigated recently by our organization are either out of school or relocated to sub standard children’s schools. Some are barely fed with three meals per day”.

There’s another royal wedding in the works, and it’s the first same-sex marriage in the extended royal family, according to the Daily Mail.

Queen Elizabeth’s cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten has announced that he will be marrying his partner, James Coyle, in a small ceremony in a chapel on his Devon estate.

Mountbatten was previously married to a woman, Penny, for 16 years, and they have three children together. The exes are still on great terms, though—she’s going to give him away at the wedding, which has the full blessing of the family. “It was the girls’ idea,” she told The Daily Mail. “It makes me feel quite emotional. I’m really very touched.”

In the interview, Penny says she knew her ex-husband identified as bisexual before they married.

“I could sense he was quite relieved sharing his secret, particularly with someone who was so receptive,” she says. “Because I have lots of gay friends and cousins, I’m very open-minded about sexuality. He seemed like he’d offloaded a huge burden. It definitely made us closer from that moment onwards because he trusted me.”

As for the upcoming wedding, Mountbatten says he wants to do it for his partner James.

“He hasn’t been married… For me, what’s interesting is I don’t need to get married because I’ve been there, done that and have my wonderful children,” he explains. “But I’m pushing it because I think it’s important for him…James hasn’t had the stable life I have.”

“I want to give you that,” he told Coyle.

“It’s a very modern marriage,” Coyle continued in the Mail interview. “There was no proposal, just an acceptance of this great love. He cares. I care. The girls are very accepting.”

PoliticsNigeria Now More Divided Like Never Before – Ekweremadu by 13Ebiscoo(op): 10:37pm On Jun 15, 2018
The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has said Nigeria is now more divided like never before.

He, however, stated that a brilliant outing by the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia would help to heal the wounds of the divisions in the country.

Ekweremadu stated this in a goodwill message by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, to the Super Eagles as they prepare to open their account in Russia.

The Deputy Senate President expressed absolute faith in the Gernot Rohr-tutored team. He charged the team to go for goals.

He said, “Nigeria is more divided today than at any other time in her history. But, for us, football is the tonic that heals old wounds. We need a truly super and brilliant outing by the Super Eagles at the Mundial to help reunite a divided nation.

“They have the experience, skill, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit to do the nation and Africa proud. They also have the prayers and goodwill of the over 180 million Nigerian population behind them.”

The Deputy Senate President further urged the team to go for goals and the zenith, emphasizing that “there is absolutely nothing beyond the Super Eagles at this stage.”

While wishing the Super Eagles the very best, Ekweremadu also enjoined Nigerians not to relent in their prayers for the team.

PoliticsMeet Falmata Abubakar, Shekau’s Mother Speaks On Whereabout Of Boko Haram Leader by 13Ebiscoo(op): 10:33pm On Jun 14, 2018
Driving west from the city of Maiduguri, Nigeria, the roads get narrower as the towns get smaller. Along the road lie bullet-ridden buildings and security check points as vigilante members patrol gates, all signs of a region where people are trying their best to protect themselves.

After three hours VOA ends up in Yobe state, at a village called Shekau. Here, elders and community leaders take VOA to meet Falmata Abubakar, who they say is the mother of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau.

His father was a local district imam before passing away a few years ago.

Falmata said she had never spoken to journalists before VOA approached her, and she does not know where her son is hiding.

“I don’t now if he’s alive or dead. I don’t know. It’s only God who knows. For 15 years I haven’t seen him,” she said.

Concealing their hometown

People here say they often hide the fact that they are from Abubakar Shekau’s hometown because others may fear they have Boko Haram connections.

Falmata says her son left Shekau as a boy to continue his Islamic education in Maiduguri, a center of religious studies for hundreds of years.

Shekau was an almajiri. In the generations-old tradition, almajirai are sent off by their parents to study the Quran in schools locally known as a tsangaya, where a teacher coaches the dozens, sometimes hundreds of male students, to memorize the entire Quran.

Almajirai beg on the streets for food, and it is believed that Shekau did the same. At some point in his studies, Shekau, according to his mother, met Mohammed Yusuf, the founder of Boko Haram, who condemned Western education as sinful. Falmata says her son was brainwashed.

'Different characters'

“Since Shekau met with Mohammed Yusuf, I didn’t see him again,” she told VOA.

“Yes, he’s my son and every mother loves her son, but we have different characters,” she said. “He brought a lot of problem to many people. Where can I meet him to tell him that these things he is doing is very bad? He brought many problems to many people, but I am praying for God to show him the good way.”

Mohammed Yusuf was killed by Nigerian security agents in 2009, and Abubakar Shekau then took over as the leader.

Shekau is accused of leading an insurgency that has killed more than 30,000 people in northeastern Nigeria and the Lake Chad region.

Destroying schools is at the heart of Boko Haram’s manifesto, and the group has attacked more than 1,400 schools, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Members of the group invaded the first primary school in northeastern Nigeria in 2010 and 2013. They killed the principal and secretary.

In 2014, Boko Haram killed 59 students at a federal school in Buni Yadi, Yobe State. The school is being rebuilt but the expansive campus is barren, a reminder of one of the bloodiest school attacks in Nigeria’s history.

In February of this year, the sect kidnapped more than 100 students from the girls’ secondary school in the town of Dapchi.

The insurgents returned the students a month later, but held onto Leah Sharibu, reportedly because she refused to convert to Islam in exchange for her freedom. Her mother Rebecca and her brother say they feel in their hearts that Leah is still alive.

It’s the 2014 abduction of the Chibok Girls from their school that brought Boko Haram into the international spotlight for unprecedented condemnation. The Bring Back Our Girls activists are still demanding the freedom of at least 100 Chibok Girls, including Dorcas Yakubu who turned 20 years old this week, marking her birthday while in Boko Haram captivity. In 2016, Dorcas appeared in a proof of life video released by the terrorists.

Falmata says she can never curse her son, but he has become someone who she doesn’t recognize anymore.

“He just took his own character and went away,” she said. “This is not the character I gave him. I don’t know what this type of behavior is. It’s only God who knows.”

PoliticsApostle Suleiman’s Father Gives Him “final Warning” Over Buhari by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:17am On Jun 14, 2018
Hon. Imoudu Sule, father of controversial preacher, Apostle Johnson Suleiman, has publicly warned his son to stop criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sule, who is the current All Progressives Congress (APC) Leader in Auchi as well as the APC Deputy Leader, Etsako West, Edo State, Nigeria, told the fiery cleric to “leave politics for politicians”.

He stated this while speaking with select journalists in Lagos.

“This is a man I love, respect and hold in high esteem for being a person of integrity over the years.

“Each time I hear people criticize my party, the (APC), my heart bleeds. Apostle Johnson Suleiman who’s my biological son and a renowned preacher of the gospel is seemingly becoming a consistent critic of the ruling party lately.

“And I am seriously concerned about it as numerous well-wishers are now urging me to call my son to order.

“I hereby speak out to let Nigerians know that I have warned my son (Apostle Johnson Suleiman) to immediately leave politics to politicians and focus on his calling as a priest.

“Being a retired Army officer, PMB is my commander in chief and the overall leader of my party, the APC. Hence, I will do anything in my capacity as a stakeholder to support Mr. President for his noble repositioning of our dear country Nigeria.

“Consequently, anybody who is not supporting the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is an enemy of the nation,” Sule said.

PoliticsSenator Nyako Speaks On Decamping From APC by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:25pm On Jun 12, 2018
Senator representing Adamawa Central, Abdul-Azeez Nyako has disclosed that supporters of his father, former Governor Murtala Nyako are preparing to dump the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Addressing supporters in Yola, the state capital, Nyako said they were preparing to quit APC due to marginalization.

He said they were ”completely marginalised” in the just concluded ward, local government and state congresses held in the state.

Nyako said, “Even his father, Murtala Nyako lost control of his ward in Mayo-Belwa local government.”

The lawmaker noted that the reconciliatory talks between the APC leadership and aggrieved members of the “New PDP’ a faction within the APC, was just a ruse.”

He said, “We have no option than to go, but we are still discussing the party to move to with our entire structure. I have spoken with Prof. Jerry Gana in SDP. I also spoke with Attahiru Bafarawa and fixed an appointment for him with Admiral Nyako. Bafarawa wants us to return to PDP.

“On Thursday, I went to Abeokuta and sat (down) with (former president) Obasanjo about ADC. He directed me to see Col. Oyinlola who assured us that we will be absorbed with our structures if we join the party. I also spoke with Kwankwaso (former Kano governor) before the congresses.

“I was given the party’s constitution about a month ago, it’s a new party expected to be approved soon with four others by INEC.”

Nyako said they were happy leaving APC ”before it’s too late.”

“We have done this before, when we left PDP to form APC and this time around by the grace of God, our movement will not be in vain,” Nyako said.

PoliticsAbiola Deserves GCFR Title – Senator Dino Melaye Says by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:26pm On Jun 11, 2018
Senator Dino Melaye has reversed his position on the GCFR title to be conferred posthumously on MKO Abiola by President Buhari tomorrow June 12th.

On the floor of the Senate last Thursday, Melaye argued that President Buhari cannot confer such an honor on Abiola since he is dead. According to Melaye, a dead Nigerian is no longer a Nigerian.

“No matter how beautiful a situation is, the law of the land remains the law of the land. Section (2) says ‘ a person shall be eligible for appointment to any rank or holder unless he is a citizen of Nigeria.

A dead man is not a citizen of the federal republic of Nigeria.’ We should not be emotional about this,” Dino had said during plenary on Thursday.

However, in a statement he released on social media, Melaye says his stance on the conferment was misconstrued and that the politician
deserves the award. Read his statement below

For the last couple of days, I have been inundated with calls and text messages from well-meaning Nigerians, especially my constituents, who want to inquire on my exact position on the declaration of June 12 as the new Democracy Day and the conferment of the highest National Honours of GCFR on the late Chief MKO Abiola, *the winner* of June 12, 1993 presidential

For the avoidance of doubt, my views and belief on the sanctity of June 12 and the place of the late Chief MKO Abiola in Nigeria’s democratic history, have not changed and will not.

Hence, in my view, the decision by the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to honor the late business mogul is deserving and long overdue save for attendant legal issues
raised.

It is a verifiable fact that I have canvassed for this recognition for Chief Abiola over the years, and granted an interview to Channels Television two years ago, where I advocated for same.

Let me also make it abundantly clear that while both Chief Abiola and the late legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) deserved more than the GCFR and GCON Honours respectively to be bestowed on them posthumously next Tuesday, it is however important that the right thing is being done in their memory and therefore should not have any blemish in the guise of the current debate for legality or otherwise of the historic Honours as we are witnessing now.

I urge the Federal Government to do the needful and display the sincerity of purpose by officially recognizing Chief Abiola as
President-elect and cause the official results of the June 12, 1993, presidential election to be released by INEC since President Buhari himself had admitted in the Presidential Order designating June 12 as Democracy Day, the freest and most credible election. By so doing, the GCFR title will, therefore, have a meaning.

If the right thing is done now by the Federal Government by proposing amendments to the National Honours Act 1964 to accommodate the current developments, no government in future will reverse the decision. This is my stand as a lawmaker.

PoliticsWhat Obasanjo, Buhari Should Do – Bode George Reacts To Ex-president’s Claims by 13Ebiscoo(op): 11:18am On Jun 10, 2018
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and former military governor of Ondo State, Chief Olabode George, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to sheathe their swords in respect of national interest.

The statement is sequel to Obasanjo’s allegation that Buhari administration was planning to frame him up for arrest and detention over his critical views about the government.

Obasanjo had alleged in a statement on Friday that the Buhari-led Government was trying to frame him up so as to be prosecuted and detained.

In reaction, Minister of information, Lai Mohammed said the Buhari administration will not be distracted by “frivolous allegations from any quarter, especially those cleverly choreographed to divert attention from a widely-acclaimed presidential proclamation and to shore up support for a waning and egotistical cause.”

However, George in a statement on Saturday urged both parties to stop the war of attrition, noting that, ”The military do not wash their dirty linens in the open.”

Lamenting about the public spat between the former president and the government, George said, “As a military man, I know these senior officers very well. I have worked at close quarters with the two of them.

“I have no doubt about their selfless commitments to our nation.

“I am appealing to the two personages, as a junior officer, to sheath their swords and resolve their differences behind the curtain. That is the military style. We don’t wash our dirty linens in the open.

“I took Obasanjo’s statement about the threat to his life with conscionable, natural concern.

“I have also read the presidency’s rejoinder, which implied that there is nothing sinister in their motives.”

Politics‘buhari Has Done Justice To Abiola’s Supporters, Democracy by 13Ebiscoo(op): 6:05am On Jun 10, 2018
A leader of the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s conferment of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic on the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1933 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, as a justice to Abiola’s supporters and democracy.

The President on Wednesday also declared June 12 as Democracy Day and conferred GCON on Abiola’s running mate, Babagana Kingibe and the late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

Emerhor in a statement on Saturday stated that it was only a person of great courage like Buhari that could take such decision of addressing the long overdue issue of honouring Abiola and Kingibe.

He further said that the action of the Buhari-led administration was not only a justice to the families of the deceased but also to other unsung heroes of democracy particularly those who died while voting for the late Abiola.

He stated that past leaders who refused to toe the path of honour should be ashamed, noting that Buhari had written his name in the gold in the nation’s history.

Emerhor said, “President Buhari has by this singular act established himself as a fearless progressive, a true democrat and a man with a true sense of history and justice. President Buhari has brought to an end an era where previous presidents bury their head like the ostrich in the sands of arrogance and political denial of the significance of the events of June 12.

“Buhari didn’t just honour the Abiolas, the Kingibes, the Ganis and those heroes that died in the streets of Nigeria, but he has indeed re-established Nigeria as a nation that can be a beacon of hope and justice to all.”

The APC leader stated that the Buhari administration remained unmatched in the war against corruption and ongoing revamping of the nation’s infrastructural development and his tenacity in pulling the economy out of recession.

Commending the President for the decision, he said the people of Delta State would support his re-election bid in 2019 to ensure the setting of the country on the right track before leaving office in 2023.

PoliticsDon’t Politicise Water Bill – Presidency Begs Nigerians by 13Ebiscoo(op): 7:52am On Jun 09, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Water Resources on Friday, said that the National Water Resources Bill is consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Land Use Act, and should not be politicised.

The ministry also urged Nigerians to disregard misleading allegations, which were evident from the various commentaries noticed from those opposing the Bill.

The Minister, Mr Suleiman Adamu, in a statement, noted that the Bill was not a new law; rather an amalgamation of Water Resources Laws that have been in existence as enshrined in LFN 2004.

He said reports in the media appeared to had neglected the provisions of the bill which was for the development, management and efficient use of the Nation’s water resources in line with global best practices.

The Minister further appealed to stakeholders and Nigerians, in general, to have faith in the bill as it was for the good of the nation.

“It is in the overall best interest of every citizen of the country that the process of its passage is not politicised.

“The general public is invited to note that this National Water Resources Bill when passed into Law, will better serve and provide for the enhancement of the Nigeria Water Sector in line with global best practices,” he said.

He said the attention of the ministry was drawn to the erroneous and distorted analysis of the National Water Resources Bill, which was currently before the Senate having already been passed by the House of Representatives.

He noted that the overall objective was geared towards efficient management of the Water Resources Sector for the economic development of Nigeria and the well-being of its citizens.

“These Laws are Water Resources Act, Cap W2 LFN 2004, the River Basin Development Authority Act, Cap R9 LFN 2004, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (Establishment) Act, Cap N1100A.LFN, 2004 and National Water Resources Institute Act, Cap N83 LFN 2004.

“These Laws are being re-enacted with necessary modifications in the new bill to actualise current global trends and best practices in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). “

He added that that the bill, drafted in 2006 had passed through series of consultations among stakeholders up to 2008, since which time it received no priority attention by successive administrations until now.

The bill provides for professional and efficient management of all surface and groundwater for the use of all people.

SportsNigeria Is Going To The Amputee Football World Cup This Year (see Players) by 13Ebiscoo(op): 12:38am On Jun 09, 2018
Three months ago, we reported that Nigeria will soon be getting an amputee football league.

Following that awesome news, the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF) just made an even bigger revelation: The country will be playing at the Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico!

The formation of an amputee football league in the country was initially held up due to a backlog of annual fees, which the NAFF was supposed to pay the World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF).

NAN reports that the NAFF has cleared the backlog, leading to the country being invited to the Amputee Football World Cup.

This will be the first time the country’s national amputee football team, the Special Eagles will take part in the global tournament.

With the country expecting to discover talented players through the amputee football league, the Special Eagles should be looking to kick ass at the tournament – especially, since the World Cup is slated to hold in October.

So, the NAFF has ample time to put a stellar team together.

PoliticsFG Seeks Improved Investment From European Businesses by 13Ebiscoo(op): 6:32am On Jun 08, 2018
The federal government has called for improved private sector investment in Nigeria by European businesses, saying that the country’s investment climate is now very attractive and conducive.

Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, who was on the panel discussant on ‘Delivering Jobs, Growth and Global Competitiveness’ at the on-going High-Level Conference on Jobs and Growth in West Africa, in Brussels, Belgium, said the Buhari administration had taken steps to improve the business climate in Nigeria, stating that the country’s business outlook for 2018 and in the medium-term was very positive.

The main objective of the conference was for the European Union (EU) to formally present to the West African sub region the European Investment Plan (EIP) as a tool for driving investment and inclusive economic growth in West Africa.

Other members of the panel were Mrs. Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade of the African Development Bank; Mr. Mamadou Traore of the ECOWAS Commission; Mr. Abdoulaye Fall of ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development; and Mr. Stefano Manservisi, the Director General for International Cooperation and Development of the European Commission.

A statement from the minister’s spokesman, Mr. Akpandem James said Udoma told the gathering that Nigeria was open for business, noting that the current administration had taken steps to improve the business climate by initiating reforms aimed at stabilising the macro-economic environment, improving infrastructure and removing impediments that hitherto constrained business development in the country.

While making a presentation on Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), the minister explained that the Plan has three strategic objectives of restoring and sustaining growth, investing in the people and building a competitive economy.

He stressed on government’s determination to deliver on these objectives as it is aiming to achieve sustained inclusive growth and attaining at least a 7 per cent GDP growth rate by 2020.

With the implementation of some of the Plan’s reform initiatives like the establishment of the Nigerian Industrial Policy and Competitiveness Advisory Council and the setting up of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), the minister said it had become much easier now to register and establish business in Nigeria.

According to him, there are positive signs already that the reforms are working.

Sharing experience on the administration’s poverty alleviation and job creation programmes through the Social Investment Programme (SIP), Government Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) as well as the Industrial Revolution Plan, he said government has not only created a platform for skills acquisition but has laid a foundation for youth entrepreneurship and employment generation.

PoliticsMKO Abiola: Nigerian Lawyers React, Threaten To Challenge Decision In Court by 13Ebiscoo(op): 4:47pm On Jun 07, 2018
Some lawyers in the country have faulted the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to confer the highest title in the land, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, on MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Buhari had on Wednesday announced June 12 as the new Democracy Day, stressing that the decision was to honour Abiola, acclaimed winner of the election adjudged to be the most fair and credible in the history of Nigeria.

Reacting, however, some lawyers, who spoke with DAILY POST on phone, faulted the decision of the president, describing it as illegal and unconstitutional.

Ace lawyer, Barr Paul Edeh told our reporter that the decision was an indictment on the side of the president.

According to him, since Buhari toppled a democratically elected government in 1983, he should resign and allow Shehu Shagari, whom he overthrew complete his tenure.

“The president is totally wrong for conferring the title on Abiola. Inasmuch as many Nigerians may welcome the idea, the law is against it and anything done outside the purview of the law is illegal. In law, it is said that you can’t put something on nothing and expect it to stand.

“That title is reserved for only a person sworn-in as president. Abiola was never sworn-in, so how did he get the title of GCFR posthumously?

“The presidency has shot itself on the foot because he would be forced to pay all the entitlements of a former president to Abiola’s family posthumously.

“I think the only thing he did right was the recognition of the said date as our democracy day, anything outside that is illegal and would be challenged, somehow,” the Abuja-based lawyer said.

Also speaking with our reporter, popular activist, Barr Abbas Ochogwu said the conferment of the title was illegal and should be rejected by the Abiola’s family.

“The president is wrong. The law does not empower him to confer such title on anybody. In fact, no one has the constitutional power to do so. That title is exclusively reserved for an elected president. Abiola was never sworn-in and there is no way he could be called a former president.

“For the June 12 decision, we welcome it wholeheartedly because of how significant the date is in the history of our democracy but for the title, it is a no no.”

Also reacting, Abuja-based lawyer and human rights activist, John Ochogwu said, “I think the president has only exercised his presidential power but for me, anyone that thinks he’s wrong can challenge him in court.”

Earlier, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Alfa Belgore, has said that the award of Nigeria’s highest national honour on late Moshood Abiola was illegal.

Belgore, who was CJN from 2006 to 2007, said the national honours cannot be awarded posthumously, much less the GCFR, which is the highest honour in the land.

“It is not done. It is for people living. The only thing they could do is to name a place after him, but national honours award, no,” the ex-CJN had said.

PoliticsBoko Haram: Rise Above National Sentiments – FC Charges Nigerian, Cameroonian Tr by 13Ebiscoo(op): 6:58am On Jun 07, 2018
The Force Commander, Multinational Joint Task Force, Major General Lucky Irabor has urged officers and men of the Task Force to work with poliitical and military leadership of countries of the Lake Chad Basin to bring Boko Haram terrorism to a decisive and successful end.

Major General Irabor made the charge on Wednesday while addressing Cameroonian and Nigerian troops in Wulgo, at the Nigeria – Cameroon border.

A statement Wednesday night from Colonel Timothy Antigha, Chief Military Public Information Multinational Joint Task Force N’Djamena, Chad, said the Commander observed that as soldiers, the primary responsibility was to profer workable solutions to defence and security challenges facing countries of the Lake Chad Basin, taking a cue from directions provided by political and military authorities.

The statement also said the commander noted that the fact that Boko Haram terrorists do not respect or recognize international borders in their quest to foist a regime of terror on the region, suggests that troops should rise above national sentiments and pursue a common goal.

Earlier, Major General Irabor was briefed on the progress of the first phase of Operation AMNI FAKAT and preparations for the next phase of the operation.

“The Force Commander expressed satisfaction with the clearance of Bukar Maryam, Koloram and Abaganaram, as well as the establishment of strong points in Gashigar, Metele and Arege.

“He commended troops for their sacrifices, but Urged more commitment and resilience in order to bring a lasting solution to the Boko Haram problem.” The statement added.

In a related development, the Force Commander also visited headquarters of Sector 3 and Nigerian Navy outpost both in Baga to assess operational readiness for future military engagements.

In Baga, the Force Commander thanked officers, soldiers and ratings in both locations and commended their steadfastness and dedication to the eradication of Boko Haram terrorism.

PoliticsDogara Raises Alarm Over 2019 Election by 13Ebiscoo(op): 12:13am On Jun 06, 2018
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has explained that as part of efforts to ensure that democracy in Nigeria is not threatened by violence, he sponsored a bill that seeks to eliminate the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

He also expressed deep concern that in the build-up to the 2019 elections, violence is beginning to take root, adding that the influx of small arms and light weapons poses a great threat.

Speaking on Tuesday when he received a delegation from Security Sector Reform of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria and Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre at his office, he noted that arms fuel conflicts, which in turn impale the society and truncate development.

He said: “Elections happen in virtually all governments, but not all elections are democratic. We are talking about promoting democratic elections; these democratic elections have some criteria: they are supposed to be fair and free, they are supposed to be inclusive, and they are supposed to be periodic. Where you hold elections in an environment of intimidation and violence; it cannot be free and fair.

“Once it is not free and fair, it therefore means it doesn’t pass the criteria of a democratic election. So that’s the challenge, and the truth is that there is no corruption that is more than truncating the will of the people through elections into government positions. This is because that is the essence of representative governance, as the people have elected their representatives and it is those representatives that they have elected and having taken positions in government that can deliver the goods.

“We are aware of the fact that if this Bill is quickly translated into Law, as we are running into the 2019 general elections, if we are able to set up this Commission, we will combat this illicit dealing in weapons of war. We will be able to provide a very conducive environment for the 2019 elections to take place.”

The speaker affirmed the commitment of the House to ensure that the Bill is quickly transmitted into law before the annual recess in July.

“Because you may wake up one day and discover that you can’t even think or write what you want to write, you can’t even go on advocacy, except you get a Commission from some quarters, and that is why we really have to wake up and work for the preservation of our democracy and freedom. As it is written and said: a free man when he fails blames no one.

“So at least if you are alive and free; you have the right to invest your freedom in the pursuit of happiness regardless of the conditions. When you are not free however, you don’t have the tools, you don’t have the means to pursue happiness, you are cut-off completely from the proceeds of democracy,” he added.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Mr Clem Nwankwo, informed the speaker that the country is undergoing serious threats to its security, hence the urgent need for setting up a commission on small arms and light weapons in Nigeria to check its influx.

PoliticsWhy Gowon Ordered Us To Treat Biafran Soldiers As Brothers– Buhari by 13Ebiscoo(op): 12:34am On Jun 05, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said a former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), directed all the military commanders during the nation’s Civil War to show a lot of restraint while dealing with the Biafran soldiers.

He said they were warned that the soldiers were not fighting enemies but their brothers.

Buhari, a former military officer, disclosed this during his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Nigerian Red Cross Society at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He praised Gowon for that decision and described him as a committed Nigerian.

The President also commended the NRCS for bringing succour to victims of the war even in dangerous circumstances, noting that the pathetic pictures of war-ravaged Biafrans were always heart-rending.

He said, “Earlier in my profession, during the civil war, I know how much sacrifice members of the Nigerian Red Cross and their international counterparts did both in the real front of operations and at the rear, on both sides. I think it is a lot of sacrifices because anything can happen to you in the operational areas.

“The risks they faced were real and I admire their courage and commitment to helping people who were in distress and were virtually in millions. Those photographs of people from the Biafran enclave spoke a lot.

“I remember with nostalgia the performance of the Commander-in-Chief, General Gowon. Every commander was given a copy of the Commander-in-Chief’s instructions that we were not fighting enemies but that we were fighting our brothers. And thus, people were constrained to show a lot of restraint.

“The international observer teams were allowed to go as far as possible within and outside the war front and I think this was generous and very considerate of General Gowon. He is a highly committed Nigerian.”

The President promised to help the organisation to secure a permanent office accommodation in Abuja.

Buhari said, “I have taken note of your logistics especially your (request for) office here.

“I assure you that the government will do its best when you decide to build such facilities in terms of securing an area here within the Federal Capital Territory.

“To use the words of a famous Nigerian minister, I hope you will not build an elephantine headquarters which is going to be functional because we have seen your activities throughout the country.”

In his remarks, the National President of the NRCS, Chief Bolaji Anani, said the organisation had over 800,000 trained volunteers based in communities across the 774 local government areas of the federation.

He pleaded with the President to assent to the bill amending the Red Cross Act of 1960, whenever the National Assembly, which is debating it, eventually gave its approval. The Act has not been reviewed since it was passed in 1960.

“A review is long overdue. We note with pleasure that the current National Assembly is in the process of doing that. In fact, the revision has already undergone a public hearing.

“We hope that when the revised bill is passed by the National Assembly, it will be graciously assented to by Mr President,” he said.

PoliticsPDP Convention: Adedoja To Withdraw Suit Against Secondus, Party by 13Ebiscoo(op): 7:37am On Jun 04, 2018
Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, an aggrieved National Chairmanship aspirant in the December 2017 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention, said he was withdrawing his suit challenge the outcome of the election.

Adedoja at a news conference on Sunday in Abuja, said he had directed his lawyer, Rikey Taffa (SAN), to discontinue the case.

Adedoja had filled a suit at a Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the National Convention that produced the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

He said the decision was due to intervention by well-meaning top party leaders and major stakeholders in PDP as well as in the spirit of Ramadan.

“I have requested my lawyer, Messrs. Rikey Taffa and Co., to file paper to discontinue the case, also in the spirit of the month of Ramadan, a month of forgiveness, I have laid the matter to rest.

“I am not asking for any compensation whatsoever from the party as only the Almighty can compensate any human being for his deeds and actions.

“The month of Ramadan is a month of forgiveness, which I have adhered to in this case.

“I remain a committed member of the party to ensure that the objectives of the founding fathers of our great party are achieved for the betterment of our country and for democracy to strive,’’ he noted.

Adedoja said he also made the decision as part of his sacrifices towards the development of PDP and the democracy of the country.

“I believe we all have to make sacrifice in one way or the other, if our party and country’s democracy must continue to grow and develop,” he added.

It will be recalled that after the December 2017 National Convention of the party held in Abuja, Adedoja challenged the outcome of the election on the basis of the omission of his name on the National Chairmanship ballot box.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sources close to the headquarters of the party revealed that prominent leaders of the party such as former Senate President Chief Pius Anyim Pius; Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers; and the Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi, played key roles in finding the political solution.

Also were the Chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa and the Chairman of former Ministers Forum, Mr Tanimu Turaki.

Others were former Governors Rasidi Ladoja; Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State and Sen. Biodun Christine Olujimi.
