PoliticsBEDC Disconnects Delta University Over N35,000 Debt by 13Ebiscoo(op): 6:55pm On Jul 09, 2018
The authorities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) on Monday said it has disconnected the Delta State University (DELSU) over a debt of N35,000, adding that since December 2017, the university had been indebted to it, and had not made any efforts to offset the debt.

Speaking with DAILY POST in Asaba, the Public Relations Manager, BEDC Edo/Delta State, Mrs. Esther Okolie, said: We had to disconnect DELSU after series of letters written to its management about the N35, 000 debt, instead, it paid deaf ears, and we will not reconnect it until DELSU pay the debt. BEDC does not run charity organization, so there is need for bills to be paid”.

But the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Peretomode, who confirmed the N35, 000 debt, said: “BEDC has not been doing well in area of bills, its bills had been too outrageous. We asked for a review, BEDC refuses, and we stay disconnected for now”.

Professor Peretomode however called on staff and students to always switch off electrical appliances when not in use, lamenting that security lights in residential quarters were usually not put out during the day, and frowned at some staff occupying residential quarters that were in the habit of using electricity supply for their private businesses.

Investigation revealed that the university authorities through its bulletin dated January 11, 2018, with the title: “Need to monitor electricity consumption by staff and residents of the university” indicated that “there was the need to monitor the use of electricity in staff quarters, and offices on regular basis”.

The university bulletin had also hinted that it was having difficulty coping with the payment of rising cost of the bills from the BEDC, noting that due to the development, there was no electricity supply for six months in the university.

Some lecturers of the university, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that for over nine months, there has not been electricity supply to their department and offices, lamenting what they described as “poor working conditions” due to epileptic power supply being experienced by them in the university campus.

Further investigations revealed that power generating sets in the various campuses of the university currently run from 6am to 7:30am, and 7pm to 12 midnight, daily, while when there was power supply from BEDC, electricity was supplied from 6am to 10am and 4pm to 12pm daily.

Speaking further, BEDC spokesperson, Mrs. Esther Okolie disclosed that BEDC had demanded that the outstanding bill must be cleared before it could reconnect the light, while DELSU management said it had regulated the load it was carrying to reduce the monthly bill with a view to coping with the monthly and outstanding bills to BEDC which was pegged at N7,000 monthly.

PoliticsWhy Wike Is A Liar, Operating Fraudulent Govt – APC by 13Ebiscoo(op): 10:30am On Jul 09, 2018
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has described the state Governor, Nyesom Wike as a liar who operates a fraudulent government.

Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, the state Chairman of the party made the remark while condemning Wike’s alleged penchant for painting and inviting dignitaries across Nigeria to commission projects already completed by his predecessor.

Addressing reporters at the APC State Secretariat in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Flag-Amachree cited the Obiri Ikwerri-Airport Road which he said was initiated by former Governor Peter Odili and completed by Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as governor.

Flag-Amachree claimed that Wike merely patched one or two spots on the road and invited the Senate President, Bukola Saraki to commission it under the guise that he built and completed the road.

According to Flag-Amachree, “It is so sad that Wike has refused to come to terms with the truth. Inviting the Senate President to commission the Obiri-Ikwerre – Airport Road, which he presently claims to have constructed remains the biggest fraud of the century.

“Rivers people can never be cowed and hoodwinked into forgetting the glaring fact that Gov. Odili initiated the construction of that road whereas Gov. Amaechi constructed the drainages and tarred the road alongside the Obiri-Ikwerre Interchange that gives architectural beauty and economic significance to the road.

“A governor with a modicum of integrity would not crave to appropriate the glory for himself alone. Wike lacks integrity otherwise why should a responsible governor not state the obvious facts by acknowledging the work done by Sir. Dr. Peter Odili and Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi concerning that road?

“More importantly, this governor who is spreading lies about the history and status of the Obiri-Ikwerre – Airport Road merely laid asphalt after remedial pothole works on the road.

“Gov Wike is simply operating a fraudulent scheme in the name of government; he alone determines what contract to award and to whom. Due process is dead in Rivers State as he runs the state as a personal fiefdom. Not even his commissioners know the contracts being awarded in their ministries. The situation is so appalling and we are wondering how we got to this sorry pass.”

Politics2019: Any Benue Indigene Who Votes For Buhari Will Be Cursed – Aji by 13Ebiscoo(op): 6:51pm On Jul 08, 2018
President, National Association of Benue State Indigenes, NABENSI, Moses Mwarga Aji, has said that any Benue indigene who votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections will be cursed.

Aji, who was reacting to arraignment of former Benue State governor, Mr. Gabriel Susuam, by the Federal Government, over alleged illegal possession of arms, challenged Buhari to withdraw his inaugural remarks that he belongs to everybody.

Aji told newsmen in Kaduna that President Buhari’s action and body language has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he belongs to the Fulani extraction only.

“I think president Buhari should go back and withdraw his Inaugural speech that” I’m for nobody, I’m for everybody”. President Buhari has shown clearly that he belongs to the Fulani extraction and apart from that he does not consider any other ethnic group in this county outside the Muslims and Fulani herdsmen,” he said.

The national president, who described the arrest and arraignment of the former governor of Benue State as unfortunate, argued that a lot of people have been carrying arms illegally in the country without any arrest by the federal government’s security agencies.

“A lot of people have been carrying arms illegally moving around with sophisticated weapons and nothing is happening to them.

“Where did the Fulani people get AK47 from, and moving around, busy killing people every now and then but nothing happened to them yet Buhari did not comment.

“How many arms were caught with Susuam. They are victimizing him because he’s a staunch member of PDP. But the prayers of the masses will guide him and protect him irrespective of the frustration and threat being meted out to him as former governor.

“A lot of people possess arms illegally, a lot of people are coming in with arms illegally and nothing is happening to them. Nobody has questioned them. Our borders are porous and people are getting arms in anyhow, why must it be the former governor of Benue State that’s illegal. What Federal Government is doing to him will make him more popular and attract more people’s sympathy with him politically,” he explained.

Aji enjoined indigenes of Benue State to remain calm, be vigilant and peaceful, saying there would be no development without peace.

“But if you’re push to the wall, you have no option than to react. I said this without fear or favour. Buhari has shown to the entire world that he is unfair.

“Miyetti Allah have been making provocative statements and utterances and later execute them. Can anyone compare lives of human beings with cow. Miyetti Allah have been reacting that it was a retaliatory killings and nobody or DSS arrested them.

“When over 200 were killed in Plateau, nobody was arraigned, it happened in Benue, Miyetti Allah claimed responsibility and nothing happen to their leaders.

“January first, Many were killed in Benue, January 13th, Miyetti Allah came out and said there will be more bloodshed in Benue, and it comes to pass but nobody arrested their leaders the claimants, so how can anybody say Buhari has been fair to Benue people who voted him massively against their Christian brother, Goodluck Jonathan?

“Let me send him a message to him, that Buhari has lost in the entire Benue State, nobody will vote for him in 2019. And anyone who vote for him in 2019 will be cursed,” he stated.

CrimeAngry Customer Bites Off Waiter’s Ear Over Poor Service by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:29pm On Jul 07, 2018
A woman from Michigan, United States of America, has been charged after she allegedly bit part of a Chinese restaurant owner’s ear off because she wasn’t happy with her order.

Jade Anderson, 24, was upset about her order at China 1 restaurant in Mount Clemens some days back, according to Daily Mail UK.

Due to language barrier, the son of the owner and his wife, described by a witness to be around 10 or 11 years old, was translating Anderson’s complaints. According to the newspaper, she allegedly pushed the boy to the ground and threw her food to the floor.

After she began assaulting the wife, the owner stepped in to try and intervene. The 24-year old then began assaulting the owner. As she was being pushed out the door, she allegedly bit the man’s ear, partially detaching it.

Policemen were called to the restaurant to forestall order. They found the owner with his ear partially bitten off and a woman with a large bump on her forehead. Anderson was arrested by authorities and booked on charges of assault with intent to maim charge.

She is being held at the Macomb County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 bail and is due in court on July 11. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said that the owner was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries while the wife was treated at the scene. The son was not injured, deputies said.

PoliticsEkweremadu Reveals Only Solution To Killing Of Nigerians By Herdsmen, Others by 13Ebiscoo(op): 9:15am On Jul 07, 2018
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has stated that State Police was the only solution to the killing of innocent Nigerians.

The lawmaker has been a frontline campaigner for the decentralisation of the nation’s policing system.

He maintained his ground when he appeared on Channels Television to discuss the issue.

He said funding and equipping the police with all manner of sophisticated weapons will not end killings in the country, using the killing of seven policemen during the week as an instance.

According to the Enugu-born politician, “Yes, we need all those mechanisms in place, but even if we provide them, the problem will still be there.

“In Abuja, for instance, we have all kinds of equipment the police are using, all kinds of weapons, and well trained policemen. But they killed seven policemen yesterday.

“I am not even talking about citizens, who die on daily basis and nobody accounts for them. I am talking about trained policemen.

“The criminal elements have overwhelmed the security sector. That is the issue. We need to do something. What we are talking about is decentralising the police.

“The first set of police we had in this country were Native Authority Police, not the National Police. The Ordinance of 1916 established the Native Authority Police in Nigeria. It was further enhanced in 1924.

“It was only in 1936 that the nationwide police was established. They all existed side by side until in 1966. That was why in those days, if you were selling groundnut, you could keep your groundnut in front of your house and go to the farm.

“Somebody would drop the money and pick the groundnut he or she wanted. You didn’t need to fence your house, or have a policeman following you around because there were policemen everywhere. That was how it was structured.”

In an interview with Punch, comedian Seyi Law spoke on why celebrity marriage breakups seem like a rampant thing. He also pointed out that people never talk about the good ones because they love to focus more on the crashed ones.

She made the statement when an unmarried lady, @mochievous asked to know the benefits of getting married.

Tweets below:

@mochievous tweet:

As a young unmarried woman, I often wonder about the benefits of marriage for me. So far, my list is empty.
Married women, I’ll love to hear from you. What are the best parts of being married? Help.

@ozzyetomi tweet:

I dont particularly advocate for marriage simply because most things (listed) you can have with a partner but unmarried, maybe minus tax breaks (which doesnt apply in Nigeria same as most legal advantages of being married). Truth is advantages are few & far btw for women.
People choose to get married mainly for emotional and romantic reasons but the institution is generally not skewed in women’s favor. Personally i think all women should stop getting married but thats just me ‍♀️

BusinessNigeria Records $32bn Foreign Investment In ICT by 13Ebiscoo(op): 3:50am On Jul 05, 2018
The federal government has said the country recorded well over $32 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) over the last 15 years as a result of revolution in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu who disclosed this in Abuja recently, said such investments inflow came in form of infrastructural development that created an ICT backbone that powered various critical sectors of the economy such as banking, e-Commerce, insurance and oil & gas.

However, as part of efforts to overcome economic challenges facing the nation, Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo said there was the need to leverage more on ICT skills to achieve industrial revolution through emphasis on digital economy.

Speaking at the opening of a one-day conference with the theme; “Africa-China Cooperation in ICT and Digital Economy” organised by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria and Huawei Technologies Company (Nigeria) Limited, Osinbajo said improving skills and refocusing our priorities would help to reap more benefits from the ICT sector.

The Vice President who was represented by his Special Adviser on ICT, Mr. Lanre Osibona, stated that there was an urgent need to overcome challenges facing the nation towards leveraging ICT to fuel the fourth industrial revolution that brings about digital economy.
“Africa must develop its skills. We must know how to scale workforce and move away from business base outsourcing to knowledge base outsourcing. Data is the future and new hope. For us as a country we must invest heavily in capturing data,” he said.
Shittu also advocated the need for all stakeholders to strengthen the technology and innovation ecosystem by supporting the development of innovation hubs in partnership with the private sector.

“This conference provides the opportunity to jump-start the critical game-changing steps needed to make Nigeria’s objectives a reality in digital economy. Beyond this conference, we must work to strengthen relationships and knowledge management platforms towards building a better and more digital future that we seek”, Shittu said.

Also speaking at the conference, the ambassador of China to Nigeria, Dr. Zhon Pingjian, said China would continue to share its development opportunities with African countries and that Nigeria is “welcome on board the train of China’s development.”
The Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Nigeria, Tank Li, said: “A robust ICT infrastructure is the bedrock for digital transformation in Nigeria. In order to unleash the digital economy potential in the country, issues of broadband availability and affordability need to be addressed.

“In order to foster digital transformation of the economy, policies and programs to increase ICT infrastructure and ensure wide-spread coverage both in urban and rural areas, should be prioritised to make voice and data services available.”
Li added that strategic measures of infrastructure sharing, investment-friendly regulatory framework and preferential taxation policies were needed to reduce sites acquisition and broadband deployment costs in order to bring down the cost for users to really encourage application of ICT across the industries and the whole society.

When I first came to Nigeria, he was the first friend I made in the music industry. He really helped me understand the Nigerian music and told me things I didn’t know at a time.

I featured him on the remix of Irawo. I am happy it was him I played a movie role with. It was very easy working with him because I know him well. I don’t know anything about being in a relationship with Vector, but I definitely think Lara and the Beat is a movie worth watching because we both share a strong chemistry.”

Taking a break from music to feature in the forthcoming movie, she admitted that she feared she might lose her relevance. She stated, “To play the movie role, I abandoned my music career for about two months as the hours on set were very long. I couldn’t go to shows neither could I record songs. I lost money but I made a great movie.

However, I was extremely worried that the break could make me lose my fans but it didn’t. Acting in a movie has added to my profile and brand. When the movie comes out, it will boost my popularity.”

Speaking on her recent cozy pictures with Kiss Daniel, which also ignited dating rumors, she said, “Those were just pictures taken on the set of a new music video and nothing more. PoliticsBuhari Govt Pampering Killers – ASUU Explodes by 13Ebiscoo(op): 5:55pm On Jul 01, 2018
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has lambasted the Buhari government for “pampering” killers of innocent Nigerians.

The body also stated that the federal government has lost the capacity to enforce laws and protect Nigeria and Nigerians.

ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Deji Omole. who made this known while speaking with journalists at the weekend in Ibadan, said the body languages of the President and the police have shown incapacity to arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators of killings nationwide.

While declaring that 80 percent of cows in the country are owned by the ruling class who have over the years exploited and impoverished the masses, Omole asserted that the move to use public fund to establish private ranches for the business of those in government and their cronies should be rejected by Nigerians.

He said public funds must be deployed for the provision of public goods such as quality education, Health, water, power and road for the majority which he said the Buhari government has failed to provide.

Omole while speaking further said it was unthinkable that the federal government and their followers were more interested in 2019 elections saying that the security of lives and properties of Nigerians are more vital as most people now live in fear.

He said that the killing of over 200 Nigerians in Plateau without security response revealed that Nigerians are now living in a state of nature where live is short, nasty and brutish.

Omole said, “What Nigerians demand from this government is to provide a safe and secure environment for them and their families.

“Nowhere is safe in Nigeria. The federal government is showing by the attitudes and behaviours of the president to killings that those killing should be pampered while those being killed should tolerate the killings. We demand to see that the rustlers and killer herdsmen are brought to face the wrath of the law.

“If killings continue, it may be difficult to have 2019 elections which is why the lives of Nigerians are more important than any political ambition of any person. Buhari is breaching the social contract by failing to secure the lives of Nigerians and ensuring the enforcement of laws. Are there no laws against tress-pass?

“What does the law say about murder? Does the law allow private citizens to carry arms without license? Does the law talk about pampering killers and consoling the victims? Injustices will deepen hatred and distrust among Nigerians against Nigerians and against government”.

Crime23 Unidentified Bodies Found In Zamfara Forest by 13Ebiscoo(op): 7:15am On Jul 01, 2018
Victims With Gunshots Wounds, Slit Throats
We Have Launched Investigation – Police
Corpses of 23 unidentified persons were found inside a forest in Zurmi Local Government area of Zamfara Atate, Daily Trust on Sunday gathered.

The remains, some of which had gunshots wounds or slit throats, were discovered Friday evening in the bush.

The discovery caused panic in nearby communities, coming months after suspected armed bandits killed dozens in the area, located about 100 kilometres from the state capital Gusau.

In February, 41 people were killed when suspected armed bandits and cattle rustlers stormed a local market in Birane village in Zurmi Local Government firing at traders.

Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that none of the victims found on Friday could be identified by residents, suggesting that they were not from the area.

Locals said they could have fallen victims while on transit to another part of the state. They said the remains had since been buried.

Armed bandits have been wreaking havoc in communities across Zamfara State.

The Zamfara State police command said it had launched an investigation into the killings.

The spokesman of the state police command, SP Muhammad Shehu, said the police got information that bodies had been seen in a forest in Zurmi Local Government Area.

“Our team of operatives was there and it recovered the bodies. Discreet investigation has commenced in earnest and the perpetrators will soon be fished out,” he added.

But a resident in Boko village close to the scene, told our correspondent that the victims were killed by local vigilante, known as “Yan Sa kai.”

“The forest here has become a safe haven for criminals and when the local vigilantes saw the men, they engaged them in a fight and killed them,” the local who does not want to be named said. “We can’t actually ascertain their place of origin or where they were heading to.”

“Recently, about 10 herds of cattle were stolen and the vigilantes are working to protect the communities from attacks by the rustlers and they won’t spare any criminal,” he added

Hundreds of lives and billion of naira worth of property have been lost over the years to armed bandits in the state. The attacks have forced people out of their homes to take shelter in other communities and neighbouring Katsina State.

Last week, the state governor, Abdulaziz Yari, said he was relinquishing his position of the chief security officer of the state because the post did not give him control over security agencies operating in the state.

The governor said despite being addressed as the chief security officer of the state, he could not order security personnel to check the activities of cattle rustlers in Zamfara.

”We have been facing serious security challenges over the years, but in spite of being governor and chief security officer of the state, I cannot direct security officers on what to do nor sanction them when they err,” he said.

He said the state had pumped billions of naira into aiding security agencies, with the aim of ending the carnage, but to no avail.

Politics2019: Wike Predicts Difficult Elections, Tells NLC What To Do by 13Ebiscoo(op): 10:46am On Jun 30, 2018
Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that the 2019 general elections would not be easy.

Wike, therefore, called on the organised labour to lend its voice to the demand for credible elections in 2019.

The governor also urged labour to join other prominent leaders to seek the reorganisation of the nation’s security infrastructure for the safety of Nigerians.

Wike said this at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt yesterday when he played host to the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba.

He said, “This country belongs to all of us. Labour can no longer keep quiet on critical national issues. Labour should lend her voice on the issue of the overhaul of the security architecture.

“Labour should come out strongly to ensure that the 2019 general elections are transparent and credible. Credible polls will lead to greater service to the people by elected officials.”

Wike said it was embarrassing to the image of the country for security agencies to be seen stealing ballot boxes during elections.

The governor wondered why some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, are insisting that performance should not be the yardstick for re-election.

“If projects cannot make people return to office, what should make people return to office? I know that 2019 will not be as easy as they think, because people are warming up to resist any form of political manipulation and rigging. Workers should show seriousness, so that votes must count”, he said.

Oloketuyi was named Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc in June 2009, with the task of returning the Bank to profitability following the 2008 banking crisis which saw the collapse of many banks.

At the time, Wema Bank had negative retained earnings in excess of N45 billion and was declared a bank in grave financial situation by the regulatory authority.

However, under his leadership, the fortunes of the Bank was completely turned around, leading to the recapitalization of the Bank and its return to profitability. The Bank is now positioned to deliver dividends to shareholders.

As part of a turnaround plan which Oloketuyi led, the Bank also regained its national banking license from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, which has allowed it to expand to the Northern and Eastern parts of the country, significantly increasing its market share and customer base in the process.

The outgoing Wema Bank MD prioritized the use of technology to deliver improved service to customers, culminating into the launch of ALAT, which offers branchless banking services.

He will proceed on a terminal leave from July 1, 2018 and will be succeeded by Ademola Adebise, who is currently the Deputy Managing Director of the Bank. The appointment of Mr Adebisi as Wema Bank’s new Managing Director/CEO is however subject to the approval of the CBN.

Adebisi has been part of the Bank’s Executive management team since 2009 and has played a pivotal role in the execution of the Strategic turnaround plan of the Bank. He has over 28 years’ experience in the banking industry (inclusive of 4 years in management consulting), and has worked in various capacities in Information Technology, Financial Control & Strategic Planning, Treasury, Corporate Banking, Risk Management and Performance Management.

Before joining Wema Bank, Adebisi was Head, Finance & Performance Management Practice at Accenture (Lagos Office) where he led various projects for banks in Business Process Re-engineering, Information Technology and Risk Management.

He is an alumnus of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) of the Harvard Business School and a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Lagos. He also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Lagos Business School.

Adebisi is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). He is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria). He is an honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (HCIB) and a member of the Institute of Directors.

The Board of the Bank expressed confidence that Adebisi’s appointment will lead to the continued transformation and growth of the Bank as it positions itself as a market leader in Nigeria’s retail banking segment through technology and innovation.

PoliticsWe Did Not Describe Plateau Killings As Retaliatory – Miyetti Allah by 13Ebiscoo(op): 9:54am On Jun 29, 2018
The apex cattle breeders’ organisation, Miyetti Allah, has distanced itself from reports that it justified the recent killings of over 100 people in Plateau State.

The group’s leader in the North-central, Danladi Ciroma, was reported as saying the killings were a retaliation of previous acts of deadly aggression against Fulani residents and pastoralists in the state.

“These attacks are retaliatory. As much as I don’t support the killing of human being, the truth must be told that those who carried out the attacks must be on revenge mission,” Mr Ciroma was quoted as saying in a statement June 25. “Fulani herdsmen have lost about 300 cows in the last few weeks – 94 cows were rustled by armed Berom youths in Fan village, another 36 cows were killed by Berom youths. In addition to that, 174 cattle were rustled.”

PREMIUM TIMES published the alleged statement, which was the first to be attributed to Miyetti Allah in the wake of the chilling massacre.

But Mr Ciroma has now strongly protested the quotes credited to him in a follow-up conversation with PREMIUM TIMES, and there appears to be no documented evidence to counter his rebuttal.

Multiple accounts said the killings occurred between the afternoon of June 23 and the early hours of June 25 in several communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, about 50 kilometres south of Jos, the state capital. About 100 have been confirmed killed by the police. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said its findings revealed at least 218 people were killed as at June 27. The police could not immediately corroborate CAN’s figures, telling PREMIUM TIMES their own counts have not been updated.

Unlike in recent past when authorities attributed killings to herdsmen, no agency has openly blamed herdsmen for the latest violence in Plateau. But there are already widespread insinuations that herdsmen were responsible for the killings, and President Muhammadu Buhari has once against been called on to act decisively to end atrocities linked to herdsmen, which had seen over 1,500 killed beginning with the January 1 attacks on two local government areas in Benue.

Demands also intensified for Mr Buhari to order a full-scale crackdown on Miyetti Allah from those who interpreted Mr Ciroma’s comments as an admission of responsibility for the carnage. They said Mr Ciroma’s comments were enough to declare Miyetti Allah a terrorist group and proscribe it like the separatist Indigenous Peoples of Biafra in South-east Nigeria.

While Mr Ciroma acknowledged speaking with a reporter on Monday in Jos, he insisted to PREMIUM TIMES that he did not make the statement credited to him. In fact, he said what he told the reporter was the opposite of what was reported.

“I told the reporter that leaders at the local and national levels should come together and resolve this crisis before it is too late,” Mr Ciroma said by telephone Wednesday night, protesting strongly the comments attributed to him.

Tracing the error

An internal investigation by PREMIUM TIMES found that there was no recording of any interview in which Mr Ciroma made the statement, neither was any statement signed or circulated by him that contained the quotes.

The error was traced to our outstation reporter based in Jos, whose failure to properly attribute the source of the purported statement by Mr Ciroma misled the editors into believing that it was e-mailed to the reporter.

The reporter filed the story on Monday morning based on ‘a statement’ from Mr Ciroma. But checks by PREMIUM TIMES following Mr Ciroma’s protest on Wednesday afternoon showed that the quotes were lifted from The Nation Newspapers.

The Nation’s reporter in Plateau State also circulated the quotes in the WhatsApp group of reporters on the government house beat in Jos, telling his colleagues they were the full transcription of his interview with Mr Ciroma.

The reporter later admitted to PREMIUM TIMES that he did not have a recording of his call with Mr Ciroma, but said the quotes mirrored the Miyetti Alla leader’s position on the latest killings in Plateau State.

The Nation published the purported quotes by Mr Ciroma hours before our reporter in Jos lifted it without attribution, thus misleading his editors in Abuja.

PREMIUM TIMES management has initiated an ethics and professional review of the reporter’s work; how it came to be that his sourcing for the story fell below house standards, and how his documentation fails to measure up to expected standards for verification and accuracy.

Even if Mr Ciroma made the purported statement, newsroom managers agreed yesterday, the expectations would be to report it with proper recording or digital footprints, for the simple reason that ethical journalism places the onus on the reporter to document proof of sources’ contribution to a story.

When one of the editors on duty called our reporter to find out how the story was sourced shortly before passing it on Monday morning, he said it was personally sent out by Mr Ciroma. This turned out to be the WhatsApp group broadcast by The Nation reporter, which several other Jos-based print and electronic correspondents sent to their respective media organisations throughout Monday.

Accountability And Remediation

This again brings to fore the limits of a common culture in Nigerian beat reporting where correspondents share stories amongst themselves in the manner of pool reporting. While journalists cannot be at two or more events simultaneously, standards in ethical reporting require reporters to ensure thorough verification of any second-hand information.

PREMIUM TIMES publisher, Dapo Olorunyomi, admitted in a meeting with newsroom senior editors yesterday that the paper was substantially in error with respect to its reporting on Mr. Ciroma’s role in the conflict in Jos. “This is very much below the standards of verification we strive to maintain and for which we have come to earn the trust of our readers. As a first step, we are sending an apology letter to Mr. Ciroma regretting the mischaracterisation of his role, and assuring him that a disciplinary process is currently apace to ensure accountability for the breakdown in our editorial procedures.”

The controversial attribution to Miyetti Allah comes as the media were facing allegations of bias in its coverage of the ongoing killings in the country.

In February, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu disparaged the media for its coverage of the killings. PREMIUM TIMES largely restrains from using potentially harmful stereotypes or slurs save for where authoritative references have linked an incident to a group pattern.

PoliticsYou Will Be Held Responsible If Anything Happens To Fayose – PDP Warns Fayemi by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:41pm On Jun 28, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked everyone to stay at alert ahead of the July elections in the state warning that should anything happen to Fayose, APC candidate John Kayode Fayemi should be directly held responsible for it.

Read their statement below;

Fayemi had recently alluded to threats to life, arrests and continuous harassment of Ekiti people by security forces when he threatened that security sources would “cage” Fayose.

The PDP also charges the people of the state to take note of the threat by Fayemi to practically cage Governor Fayose on election day, which is a direct threat to his life and the peace of the state, particularly, considering the popularity of Governor Fayose and the PDP among the people.

Our investigations revealed that the statement by Fayemi that Governor Fayose will not be allowed to move around on election day is not a frivolous comment, but a product of a grand plot by agents of the APC and the Federal Government to set up the governor and open him up for harm.

The PDP is also privy of plots by Dr. Fayemi and the APC who, having realized that they have no chance in the election, have now designed plots to cause crises and engineer conspiracies to set up perceived political opponents, including traditional rulers, labour unions, religious leaders, interest groups and other stakeholders, with a view to intimidating the people and subverting their will at the polls.

What Fayemi and his dysfunctional APC have failed to come to terms with is that there is no way they can intimidate the people of Ekiti state to submission. The people of Ekiti state have already made up their minds to go along with the PDP and no amount of harassment by Fayemi can change this resolve.

We, therefore, invite all to hold Fayemi responsible should there be any breakdown of law and order or should any harm befall Governor Fayose, any traditional ruler, religious leaders, members of labour unions or any other individual of groups in the state in the course of the election.

Finally, we also caution INEC and its observers to note the already established resolve of the people of Ekiti state to be on the side of the PDP, disentangle itself from the vicious web of the APC and ensure only a free, fair and credible election, as the people will not in anyway accept any results that do not reflect their wishes and aspirations, as expressed at the ballot.

TravelAfricans Should Travel Within Continent Visa-free – Benin by 13Ebiscoo(op): 12:04pm On Jun 28, 2018
The Minister of Planning and Development, Republic of Bénin, Mr Abdoulaye Tchane, has urged West African countries to join the continent-wide campaign to make travel in Africa easier for Africans.

NAN reports that Tchane made the call on Wednesday in Cotonou at the opening of the 21st session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) for West Africa meeting organised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

He said Bénin recently joined a growing list of African countries that have made it visa free for Africans coming into their countries for business or pleasure.

He stressed that it was in the interest of West African states to join the Bénin in establishing a border-less Africa, for free movement of people.

“I will like participants to also pay attention to the influence of the economic weight of Nigeria on neighboring countries of West Africa and the implication of admitting Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritania into ECOWAS.

“I also challenge participants to deliberate on demographic and migration issues, as well as the impact of political crises recorded in some member countries,” he said.

The Director of ECA West Africa, Prof. Dimitri Sanga, stressed the need to accelerate the pace of industrialisation in the West African region to generate more jobs and for economic growth.

“As you know, West Africa is home to Africa’s leading producers of oil and cotton, the world’s largest producer of cocoa, major producers of iron, gold, bauxite and diamond.

“It is also endowed with water resources, agricultural potential, and energy.

“In addition, with 60 per cent of its population under the age of 35, it has the opportunity to invest to benefit from the demographic dividend.

“In this list of opportunities, I cannot forget the integration of people, culture and languages, geographical proximity, bridges in terms of trade and free movement of people.

“To take full advantage of these endowments and resources, the key word is transformation,” he said.

The Intergovernmental Committee of Experts is a body established by the United Nations General Assembly.

PoliticsCourt Fixes Date To Rule On Igp’s Suit Against Senate by 13Ebiscoo(op): 11:20pm On Jun 27, 2018
Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday slated September 25, 2018, to deliver judgment in a suit filed against the Senate and its President, Bukola Saraki by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

The trial Judge, Justice John Tsoho fixed the date after listening to the submissions of the counsel to the IGP, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN), who urged the court to grant the plaintiff’s prayers.

In the marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/554/2018, Idris is challenging the propriety of the resolution of the Senate, describing him as, “an enemy of democracy and unfit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria.”

He is praying the court to, among other reliefs, to quash the Senate’s resolution on the grounds that it lacked the powers to so act.

The suit, which Justice Tsoho reserved judgment on Wednesday, is one of two suits filed by the IGP against the Senate and its President.

The IGP is, in the second suit, scheduled for hearing on June 29, is challenging the propriety of the Senate’s insistence that he must appear, in person, before it in relation to the Senate’s probe of the ongoing trial of its member, Dino Melaye, on criminal charges.

PoliticsPlateau Killings: Buhari’s Visit An After Thought – PDP by 13Ebiscoo(op): 6:30pm On Jun 26, 2018
As President Muhammadu Buhari arrived Jos on Tuesday following the killing of scores of people in Plateau state, the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, has described the President’s visit as an “after thought”.

The party lambasted Governor Simon Lalong for frittering away security votes and not doing enough intelligence gathering to stem the attacks, even when “there were plans to attack communities in Plateau State immediately after sallah.”

The state chairman of the party, Hon. Damishi Sango, while addressing journalists in Jos on Tuesday, insisted that the Lalong administration has failed in its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property and was even pressured to cancel “his planned Russia trip just to go and watch soccer where an advance party was already on ground.”

Sango accused the federal and state government of trivializing “The ongoing act of terrorism, reducing it to the activities of politicians even when some people have been considered a special race to be allowed to carry modern and sophisticated weapons to unleash mayhem on innocent locals with impunity.

“We insist that the Lalong government has failed in its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives, and property and should therefore step aside.

“We are aware pressure had to be brought to bear on the governor before he cancelled his planned Russia trip (just to go and watch soccer) where an advance party was already on ground to receive him.”

The party added that, “As we condemned in the strongest terms the pogroms in Plateau State and other parts of the country, permit me to use this opportunity to condole with families and communities of those killed in cold blood. We also mourn along with the good people of BarakinLadi, Riyom and the entire State.

“I call on the Federal Government to intervene immediately by resettling the affected communities, through the reclamation of lost grounds, rebuilding of their houses and ensuring their safety thereafter.

“In the same vain, I am calling on the good people of Plateau State to remain calm and eschew violence, even in the face of pains.”

PoliticsBoko Haram: Photos Of 4,000 Dikwa Idps Without Shelter Emerge by 13Ebiscoo(op): 10:24am On Jun 26, 2018
Over 4,000 displaced women, children and men in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Dikwa are sheltering in the open, while being screened by the Nigerian Army after fleeing military operations in the area.

Cheick Ba, Country Director, Norwegian Refugee Council, said this in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

The agency also released images of Nigerians- refugees, sitting on the ground in clusters, while some move about with their luggage.

“We’re extremely concerned by the dire living conditions of families in Dikwa who’ve recently fled military operations”, Ba said.

“Children are sleeping outside with nothing over their heads. With the rains now hitting the area, they risk becoming sick with malaria, diarrhoea or typhoid,” he added.

The statement noted that aid agencies were overwhelmed as hundreds of displaced people arrive to Dikwa every day, after fleeing Mallam Kari village in Bama and other neighbouring communities, due to hostilities between the Nigerian Army and armed opposition groups.

“Before being allowed to settle in new towns, the new arrivals undergo a screening conducted by the military”, it continued.

“Over 600 displaced people are currently being kept in an unused roofless gas station while waiting to be screened by the army.

“Some 4,000 others already screened are being held at a reception centre before being given temporary shelters. But the centre is full to the brink, forcing families to sleep outside.

“It is common to see up to 15 women cramped in a single room while the men sleep outdoors.

“The military report that it takes an average of two weeks to clear the displaced people. However, last year the same exercise took as long as one year in cases when the army claimed women were wives of Boko Haram insurgents.”

The arrivals have put pressure on the lives of the host community.

Kachalla Isa, the head of the community, said “Our schools have been turned into camps for displaced families and our children can’t access education. This worries me a lot”.

The agency added that only three of the eight schools in Dikwa are functional. Four schools are housing displaced people, while the army is using one as a military base.

“NRC has so far built over 1,300 temporary homes for the new arrivals, and plans to build more shelters and toilet facilities in the coming weeks”, it added.

PoliticsOgun APC Senator Speaks On ‘defection’, Obasanjo’s ADC by 13Ebiscoo(op): 10:15pm On Jun 24, 2018
Senator Solomon Adeola, aka Yayi, has reacted to speculations that he has dumped the All Progressives Congress, APC, and defected to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, recently adopted by former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Kayode Odunaro, his spokesman, in a statement on Sunday, said while it is true that the few people from Ogun Central who decided to move into the ADC were Yayi’s supporters, their efforts to join APC had been frustrated over time and conclusively during the congresses of APC.

He said: “Adeola Yayi has not openly or covertly directed any of his supporters found in SDP, LP and other political parties operational in Ogun State to move to any other political party as he remains firmly rooted in APC and the progressives of the South west, a root that span his entire political life of over 20 years under credible progressives leaders.

“It is therefore preposterous and misinformation for anyone to alleged that he directed his supporters to join a conservative party like ADC while he remains in APC.

“The truth of the matter is that all his supporters in APC from Ogun Central like Rt.Hon. Tunji Egbetokun, former Speaker of OGHA, Hon.Kunle Adeshina, former APC Ogun Central Senatorial chairman and Hon. O. Jolaoso, a sitting APC state legislator representing Ewekoro among others with their supporters are still in APC while some fromSDP are already in APC on their own volition.

“The few fringe admirers of Yayi that switched party recently were those that had earlier left a faction of PDP in the state and seek party affiliation having been frustrated in their efforts to join APC.

“Senator Adeola remains in APC and encourage all his supporters to remain steadfast in APC and in their support and prayers for him adding that efforts are ongoing in trying to resolve any differences or grievances within the party while his consultations continues,” the statement read.

PoliticsNigeria Hosts 21, 000 Refugees From Cameroon by 13Ebiscoo(op): 5:29am On Jun 23, 2018
Following the crisis between the people of South West Cameroon Authorities of Cameroon, Nigeria is currently playing host to over 21, 000 refugees.

The representative of the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Migrants, Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, Mr. Ayasanya Akintunde said this in Ikom as the world celebrated the 2018 World Refugee Day, with the theme “We Stand with the Refugees”.

He said millions of people are displaced from their country due to conflicts and other factors and “Nigeria is playing host to about 21, 000 refugees from neighboring Cameroon Republic.”

Akintunde expressed the hope that “the crisis will be resolved timely to enable the refugees return home”, while urging their host communities to continue to give them support in the spirit of humanity.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Field Officer, Mr. Muhammed Nasry said the agency is doing everything within its powers to provide succour for the refugees, migrants and asylum seekers,

He said the world refugee day is a time to recognize the humanity of refugees and called for positive actions from stakeholders that can alleviate their plight.

Muhammed stated that, “getting laws and policies right is vital, but it is local people that are on the frontline when refugees arrive and whose welcome makes the difference between rejection and inclusion, between despair and hope and between being left behind and building a future”.

On his part, Head of Ikom Local Government Administration, Mr. Julius Adie, the Divisional Immigration Officer (DIO), Amor Austine, the Judge of the High Court, Justice Obojor Ogar told the refugees to be law abiding and to feel free to explore all available channels of communication to register their complaints and assured the Cameroonian refugees of adequate security and protection.

Representative of the refugees, Mr. Tabe Karim urged the United Nations to step in fully to resolve the problem in Cameroon to enable them return home and continue their normal lives.

PoliticsHerdsmen Killings: Ortom Denies Hiring Mama Boko Haram As Mediator by 13Ebiscoo(op): 7:56am On Jun 22, 2018
The Benue State government has denied planning to hire a negotiator to mediate between the state government and armed Fulani militia.

The governor was reacting to a letter written by one Chief John Apochi, who claimed the governor was planning to invite Mrs. Aisha Alkali Walkil, otherwise known as Mama Boko Haram peace ambassador and chief negotiator, over herders/farmers clashes in the stat

Reacting, however, the governor called on the general public to ignore the report as there was no iota of truth in it.

Tahav Agerzua, Special Adviser, Media and ICT to the governor in a statement said the claim was false and mischievous.

He said, “The Governor has not received such a letter the contents of which are obvious mischief and diversion from a serious challenge confronting the people of the state. The claims made in the so-called letter are as baseless as they are outlandish.

“There is no basis whatsoever for Governor Samuel Ortom to hire any negotiator or mediator to tackle the current security challenges in the state as he was already providing support to the conventional Federal security agencies whose duty it is to protect lives and property to end the crisis.

“The claim that the Governor brought in Mrs Aisha Wakil, alias Mama Boko Haram, to Benue State for purposes of mediation is also false and mischievous.

“Mrs. Wakil visited the state recently in company of the national leadership of the Boys Scouts and Governor Ortom’s interaction with her did not go beyond that public occasion. Besides, the current security challenges in the state have been aggravated by sponsors of Fulani armed herdsmen militia who have openly vowed to resist the validly enacted Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017.

“These sponsors who include the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and the Fulani Nationality Movement have openly stated that their agenda is to annihilate the current occupants of the Benue Valley and take over their land.

“The Governor and other leaders of the state have called for the arrest and prosecution of the leaders of these groups for the atrocities being committed in the state by the herdsmen militia. Criminal prosecution has also been initiated to effect the arrests.

“The position of several groups that Alhaji Aliyu Tershaku’s arrest and prosecution with members of the Livestock Guards for murder of two Catholic priests and worshippers is an attempt to change the true narrative and blame the victims instead of the aggressors suffices.

“Otherwise Alhaji Tershaku’s has been known to the security agencies who brought him to head the Civilian Joint Task Force in Nasarawa and Benue State in 2013.

“When President Muhammadu Buhari visited Benue State on March 12, 2018 he made a public presentation and stated his links with the current Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and National Security Adviser, Ali Mungonu.

“Attempts to demonize him are therefore part of a grand strategy to change the true narrative of the Benue crisis and also divert attention from the issues at stake just like the obviously sponsored reports of Governor Ortom’s plans to hire a mediator.

“The protection of lives and property of citizens rests squarely with the Federal Government which has coercive powers and control of security agencies and it has the support of Governor Ortom and the Benue State Government.”

PoliticsWhat We Are Doing About Influx Of ISIS Into Nigeria – FG by 13Ebiscoo(op): 8:32am On Jun 21, 2018
The Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday said it was not treating with levity the report that a terrorist group, the Islamic State, was sending insurgents trained in Syria to the country as part of a terror exchange programme.

Indications emerged last week that leaders of Islamic State (IS) were sneaking battle-hardened extremists from Syria into Nigeria.

According to reports, some of the fighters were reportedly sent to the Middle East for training in a “chilling exchange programme”.

The report claimed that the insurgents are trained for possible attacks in Britain, quoting multiple sources as saying the strong links between Nigeria and the UK will make it easier for IS to send its killers to Britain.

But the government stated that the development was receiving the necessary attention, noting that all that needed to be done to protect the country was being implemented.

The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), who disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday, explained that the government was doubling its efforts to secure the country.

He said these while responding to questions from journalists shortly after the presentation of curriculum and training manuals for the Nigeria Immigration Service training institutions.

The minister said, “When information like this (influx of ISIS members into the country) comes, we do not take things for granted whether it is true or not because it is security information.

“Before now, we are prepared to ensure that everything we need to do security-wise is being done and such information also raises the alarm and we will double our efforts towards that.”
