Yes stammering can be cured. I was a stammering from the age of 7 till my University days. I remember in Akure one day-standing on the road waiting for a taxi-I was going to Oja Oba-and all I had to do was shout Oja-Oba -so the passing drivers would hear and stop if they were going my way. And there I was saying ooooooooooooojaaaaaaaaaaaa-for almost minute. Embarrasing and frustrating. I started public speaking way back in secondary school as in my school-elections were held to become a school prefect-and one had to campaign and likewise I was active in student politics in the University. What helped me conquer stammering was to always recite and practice anything I was going to say. So before the taxi in Akure approached -i would repeat in my mind "Oja Oba" Oja Oba" and when the taxi-came it was easier to blurt out in a one swoop and it became easier and easier. In the last 10 years -if I have stammered at all-its when Im angry or trying to rush all my words. Most stammerers if not all-tend to be people who are either shy, introverts or people with short tempers. |

I also stammer, but u can hardly know cos it seems hav outgrown it. But d bad memories....I can't forget. I use to be a very brilliant guy in sec. sch but I allowed my stammering to limit my achievement. U won't bliv I turned down d chance of being the senior prefect just because I can't stand n address my fellow students. I run away from debate classes cos I don't wanna b embarrassed. I prefer staying alone, I derive joy frm things I do alone without interacting wit odas...like an introvert. I'm currently in my year 3 in uni n m tanking God dat, though it hasn't disappeared completely....its no longer a problem or constraint. I bliv m like everyone else n try to 4get dat I stammer or once stammered. *The more u think about it, the more severe it become while talking. *Be happy while in d interview room, smile like u are d owner of the company and most especially believe that u don't hav a problem with talking. #Keep Calm and Get ur Job. The Lord is with you. U can also see: www.nairaland.com/1435265/christian-guy-marry-muslim-girl Pls make FP!!!!!! |

herveze: Pls i need help about my stammering,i have been in this problem since my childhood,i have took many steps to find cure for it but unfortunately for me i cant find any cure even i google it.pls i need your help because i am going to interview on monday and i dont want to face the shame. ^^^Don't worry my brother, you'll be ok! It's when you worry and it plays constantly on your mind that the stammering will get worse. You may not be aware of it, but every human being stammers to some extent; the difference arises when some become so self conscious and think everyone else is just waiting for them to 'trip up' when speaking, and this would make the speech impediment grow until it becomes a problem! A few points to bear in mind: * Speech to one who stammers can be likened to something like a thick bucket of custard (stay with me on this......i'm leading to something )! If you hit the custard with a fist to try and penetrate it, it wouldn't be possible......you may even be able to run over a pool full of custard without sinking; but if you slowly put your hand into it, it would yield to you and you can go in elbow deep if you like. So what i'm trying to say is that when you want to speak it's ok to relax and don't try and force the words out, as this would only make it worse. Try and visualize your speech as something soft like butterflies magically going through a wall (the wall representing your stammer). * With stammerers there are certain words (or letters) they dread, and they're quite adept at finding substitutes for them. What you need to do is to try and trick the mind into thinking you're not saying the word, but tuck it away or link it mentally with another word that's easier to pronounce. For instance if you have a problem with the word 'deep', and have to use it in a sentence like: I was lost in the deep jungle! What you should mentally visualize when saying it is: I was lost in thedeep jungle! You hide the stubborn word and fool the brain into thinking you didn't mention it; this is where ceratin accents like the American accent that can easily link a stream of words together can help! *Remember stammering is all a mental thing......it's your mind trying to fool you that you can't say a certain word. If you really think about it, you'd start to laugh at how silly the whole thing is really.......you can say certain words when you're alone (or sing them quite easily), but the moment you have an audience, the silly brain tells you that you can't say it! What you need to do is practise these techniques on your own in front of the mirror first, and then subsequently with a close friend.......try and have a lengthy conversation on your favourite topic (maybe football or music). *The best tip of all is your 'breathing technique'! What i want you to do (and with practise this would become more natural) is to take a deep breath first........and as you exhale, i want you to say something with the words you find most difficult included! You can take as many breaths as you like to complete the sentence, but try to make the exhaling begin at the same time you're about to say a difficult word! *Lastly, try not to feel so self-conscious when speaking. Have the attitude that: if i stammer so fuc/king what!?......just ignore the little 'stumble' and keep on chatting! Most people that stammer think that people are just waiting for them to make a fool of themselves, which is not the case! I can tell you that if someone or a group of people think you may stammer, they'd be on your side 100%, and not wanting you to feel awkward. *When you go for the interview, just relax and start talking; if you notice that you're starting to stammer just apolgise saying that you have a little speech impediment, and I can assure you that the interviewer will tell you not to worry. But the key thing (even b'4 talk of stammering or not stammering) is to make sure you're prepared and you did your homework, and have ready answers to any questions you may be asked; try and know something flattering about the organisation as well.......that helps! Take care and goodluck next week.......you'll be ok! 3 Likes |

I once saw a very chronic stammerer sing so beautifully on GLO X-factor. I was amazed. Then also, one of my lecturers in the univeristy who is a chronic stammerer uses 'ok' to fill the gap anytime he want s to stammer in the course of speaking. You would hear something like "you have a test..oh ok..nextweek...ok..make sure you come prepared..ok..for your own good." Someone hearing him for the first time would probably think its his manner of speaking but we, his students, know that it is just his own way of disguising the fact that he stammers. Thus, @OP you could try any of the two above stated scenarios; sing more often or try using a word to disguise yours. All the best! |

I stammer since child hood but have been able to control it by not rushing my words and dont jump into conversation without knowing and preparing in your brain what yo want to say. Imagine me now being able to moderate meetings most times at my work place.most people still notice it slightly but most of my friends dont. In deeper life bible church we had a class that help to achieve that |

I do stammer. The solution I found for myself is to have a wide Knowledge of different words. So if I find it difficult to speak out a particular word, I quickly substitute it with another similar word. |
