Bizzare: Aregbesola Introduces Ifa As A Subject In Osun State Schools by Nobody: 10:50pm On Oct 06, 2013
Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said last week that his administration plans to introduce the study of Ifa as one of the subjects in the state’s secondary school. The schools’ computer tablet already have application for Ifa studies.

Ifa is a combination of traditional belief and worship of the gods that remain obvious in the names of the yoruba race. There are other gods that may need studying, Ifa is just one of many traditional ways in yoruba land.

The reason for this choice is not clear but the Governor has spoken, Nigerians really don't care as they have more socio-economic headaches to worry about, but parents may want to take their kids away from public schools on the account of being thought the Ifa ways.

There is a need to increase and sustain the teaching of our culture and values in schools, however, the introduction of the study of Ifa may not be apt for attaining this objective.

Maybe the worshipers of Ogun, Obatala, Sango worshipers etc also clamour for the introduction of their own studies? Should traditional studies be introduced in schools? Please share your thoughts on this as a student!

Its called idolatry

You need to enroll in a school in Osun State to improve on your English

Meanwhile, Ifa, as a subject, tells the history of the Yorubas and you don't have to become an Ifa priest or worshipper

The SW states will introduce Yoruba as a language of instruction alongside English in our schools

Its the way we've chosen to preserve or rich heritage and you can't understand since you don't have a history you want your unborn generation to be proud of

In all honesty, I support this move. Nigeria has a rich culture and it's important that our children even adults learn about our history. It doesn't have to be about idol worship, but there are stories and events that occurred that need to be shared. This is my own two cent. I'm a Christian but I remember when my granddad told me about the history and marriage of Edo and Eze Mewi in Nnewi, and how the four market days came to be etc, I just thought it was the coolest thing that happened in history. Today I now know a lil history about all that stuff. Anyway, good idea.

How do I comment now?
As a christian or one who supports the revival of our culture?

Anyway, the study should be entirely centred on its history.
There should be no spirituality in it.
Because there is somewhere in the constitution that talks about not making people to adopt religion in an educational setting.

Obviously, you have little knowledge of that which you speak of.
Ifa corpus is the codification of ancient Yoruba sacred knowledge and practices.

I happen to have a text of the Ifa corpus collected by a European who travelled all over Yoruba land and translated it into English.
What strikes me in reading part of this book is the close similarity between specifications of animal sacrifices to tackle adverse human conditions and those in the Bible book of Leviticus (boring to read in both cases I must tell you).

The fact is that all the religions of the world have a common origin - they are all different stories that have changed with time and distance from their initial source of origin in the "land of the gods" in middle north-east Africa.

What we call religion today was actually human's first rudimentary attempt at science - an attempt to study and provide explanations for the mysterious. In those days what you call Ifa worshipers or devotees today would be the ancient professors of that science i.e. Ifa in the Yoruba sphere of influence.

I would not object to introducing this as a subject in schools - so long as it is voluntary.
We already have our schools teaching Bible and Quaran knowledge - and I hope these are voluntary as well.

In addition, Ifa is common to all those gods you mentioned - as it codifies all sacred knowledge.

....hehehe I am probably wasting my time here, as your post (quoting as it is from another forum post with no link to any other public source) probably has a more sinister motive as usual.

OP,

Look at the bold.

1 There are many parents that will equally enrol their children and get them to study the philosophy of their ancestors. Its enough studying the philosophy of Europeans and Arabs and others, this is returning to our roots and we love it.

2. The author of this article must not be Yoruba, if he is he is illiterate about the culture.
Ifa is not specific to a deity. Ifa is a manuscript of life. Ogun is a deity, so is Sango. Let me clarofy for you and the author.

Lets say each political party, APC, PDP, APGA, LP, and so on are deities like Ogun, Oya, Sango, and so on. All the parties, regardless of their own manifestoes must atill align themselves to the over-arching document, the Constitution.
In Yoruba culture Ifa is, literally, the Constitution that all other followings align their cults and rites to.

3. Look on the picture of the author, what does his t-shirt say? He is intimidated, not by what Aregbesola is doing but by the fact that Yoruba philosophy will be instituted and integrated into academic studies. In another 50yrs Ifa will be the dominant philosophy in Yorubaland, not Christianity or Islam.

Expose me? In a dispensation where Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Further Mathematics are no longer well taught to students, hence, the poor outcome of JAMB, WAEC, NECO results of our students year in year out and you are here 'dancing azonto' on Ifa education, are you an Ifa Priest too?
