chicbenita: It seems its not just the students that are affected by the ASUU strike as protesting traders, under the aegis of National Market Women Association, Monday, stormed the National Assembly, demanding that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, call off its more than three months old strike.
The protesters, who had been at the Ministry of Education and Office of the Head of Service, arrived the Assembly complex at 11.30a.m.

The President-General of the group, Mrs Felicia Sani, who led the more than 200 protesting women, said: “We are tired of seeing our children at home. We want our children back in school. Enough of this cheap blackmail.

“We all know what they do with our year-one daughters in the university. We equally know that they sell handouts and handbooks.

“Is this not worse than corruption of the highest order?”

The President-General of the group, Mrs Felicia Sani when asked why she did not criticize the Federal Government for failing to reach an agreement with ASUU said: “Which agreement? How do you expect lecturers in state universities to earn same salaries as Federal ones? That is impossible.

“We are not educated, but you do not expect a hotel in my village to cost same price as a hotel in Abuja.

“They are located in different places. So how can a state university lecturer earn same salary with his federal counterpart?

“We are begging them for the last time. If we come out again we may have to chase them out of this country and replace them with so many jobless Nigerians.”

Say what you will but these 'IllIterate' women have taken the initiative to express themselves and given voice to their association. They're not lazy, they're not cowed, they care enough to take action. Which is more than can be said for the people who are directly affected: sitting on their butts contemplating their self-acclaimed intellectual skulls? You need heart.

I believe it was Alexander Pope who said "A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring". Where the uneducated women are humble in ignorance and perpetual scholars have been humbled by the infinite nature of knowledge, the half-educated man is a fool who presumes to have escaped ignorance and dares to look down his nose at others. If you knew any better, you wouldn't be so dismissive of other people's intellects.
wow so I was almost going to give up hope until I read this. Everyday people come on NL complaining about the strike but they have no balls to make a single move to show in public that they want the strike to end. These women took the time from business to help the youth of Nigeria and all the youth do is mock them. The same youth that will complain that they graduated 1st class and can not find a job in 4 years shame on the youth for waiting for mamas to do what they should have done months ago.

There are some of you that your mother sells in the market and so many graduate turned butcher/pepper grinder, kerosine seller etc. due to lack of white collar job. Does doing a blue collar job make one an illiterate? God save this country!
they at are just ashamed of themselves that these women have to stand up for their lazy Nash! Imagine the youths of today they complain online with all their big English but they don't know how to protest lectures that force them to pay or sleep with them for grades. They are enjoying the easy way out and would never even do half of what these 200 women had the guts to do.

During GEJ's media chat,he asked why state university lecturers should go on strike when they are not funded by the federal Government.....Now these market women are asking almost the same question as if ASUU stands for Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities.

Leave sentiments and face facts abeg. Go and read the op again and you ll see where the women said they are not educated. Meanwhile a good mother cannot engage in such a silly, sponsored, one sided protest. A good mother will plead with two people who are fighting to stop, not to start attacking one party first and presenting an obviously corrupt goverment holy as being foolishly displayed here by the so called market women. If this is how your mother settles a fight between two people, then sorry for her.

President Jonathan should address this issue. A whole semester just went by. It is either ASSU comes down to renegotaite their demand and hold it with law bidding or D govt meet their demands. If D Assu are really concerned abt D state of education in nigeria and nt their pocket, they then should consider the impact of this heady strike on D student they are fighting 4. And govt which is appionted to lead D ppl must nt be slack in D interest of his employer- D ppl/student. All this issues are facts that show dullards who must have considered and signed this present ASUU demand they made with D FG in the past adimnistration. If D govt wasnt asleep to sign such money, then it shows there is capacity to meet their demands. Or maybe it was done to pretend D administration was working.

You probably attended a college of education or a polytechnic if not you won't expect to run universities that have been around for 25-64 years with new PhDs and MSc.

Mind you the government is not doing ASUU a favor with 130billion it is only doing what it supposed to do. If 30billion of earned allowance is what you don't like, I'll honesty like to employ you give you an appointment letter and willfully not pay you for 4years and 4months. Complaining to you that, you are not the only one I employed.

Can you hear the "stand up Nigeria " comedy from these disabled brain women association of Abuja. They seem likely to be recruited by Alhaji Asari Dokubo. They are threatening lecturers back to class. how will their children be taught well in that condition. They promised to replace lecturers with jobless Nigerians. A Nigerian that do not have knowledge like professors will teach students that already have problem in learning like the football distraction? The money they collected can not even go through a week. most are likely to be divorcee. with this rebellious attitude they can't trained a child to university level. they do not come out during subsidy protest. they are looking for government contract.

THANK GOD THEY WOULD NEVER DO HALF OF WHAT THESE DISGRACEFUL 200 WOMEN HAVE DONE. Idle women that are looking for cheap money, threatening doctors, professors and professor emeritus of sack and replacing them with inexperienced jobless Nigerians. may be Roli21 will sit down in that class to receive half baked education. I have heard from lecturers mouth that when government neglect their welfare, that they care less about the students. the planes that usually crashes is as a result of neglect of the plane inspectors welfare. they delay their salaries. So the inspectors. collect bribe from the operators. Even if ASSU is forced back to work, will they give the students good education with aggrieved mind?

Here is the latest info about ASUU and FG meeting.

Deekaydadon: FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OTUOKE
INTERNAL INFORMATION RELEASE OCTOBER 14, 2013
AN UPDATE ON ONGOING ASUU NEGOTIATIONS FOLLOWING TWO RECENT MEETINGS WITH VICE-PRESIDENT NAMADI SAMBO
From the Office of the Vice-Chancellor
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following two meetings (on Thursday 19th Sept 2013 and Friday 11th Oct 2013) of representativesof the AVCNU (Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by CVC Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of ATBU) and ASUU Representatives(led by its President, Dr. N. Fagge) with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. N. Sambo, Minister of Education Barr. N. Wike and others, all Vice-Chancellors have been urged to inform and enlighten our academic and other staff on the following developments so that we can ensure a return to normalcy in our universities within the shortest possible time
1. Earned Allowances: The N30 billion already released will now be increased to N40 billion, and should be regarded only as first installment, and not a once-and-for-all payment. Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million, so Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC.
2. NEEDS Assessment Capital Money: Government was cognizant and mindful of the ability of Universities to effectively/efficiently utilize the N100 billion fund immediately, hence that figure. However, in addition to this N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013, N200 billion (increased from N150 billion previously agreed) will now be earmarked in the 2014 Budget as well as each of the following three-four years until the Universities are brought to world-class standard.
3. Project Prioritization:Universities will now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be “rail-roaded” into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralized.
4. TETFund Intervention: Government assured that the operations of the TETFund will not be impaired, and that the regular TETFund intervention disbursement to Universities will continue, unaffected. So the NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in addition to regular TETFund intervention.
5. Project Monitoring: A new Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the NEEDS Assessment intervention for universities has been set up to take over from the Suswan Committee. The new one is under the Federal Ministry of Education and chaired by the Honorable Minister of Education. In addition, to build confidence and ensure faithful implementation and prevent any relapse as before, the Vice President will meet quarterly with the IMC to monitor progress.
6. Blueprint: ASUU was mandated to submit a blue print for revitalizing the Universities to the Vice President.
7. Official Agreement Document: A signed document would be issued very soon to itemize the full issues on which this present consensus outlined here, brokered by AVCNU, has been reached.
8. An Appeal to Call Off Strike: The Vice-President Sambo appealed to ASUU to call off the strike and apologized for the "take-it-or-leave-it" comments credited to the Hon Minister of Finance. All other parties present at the meetings also prevailed on the ASUU leadership to consult objectively with its members to get them to agree with what is now on the table and to call off the strike as soon as possible after the Sallah break of Tuesday/Wednesday October 15/16 2013.
9. ASUU President Responds: At both meetings, the President of ASUU thanked the VP for taking over negotiations and promised to consult with his ASUU Constituency.
We keep our fingers firmly crossed, as we await both the official consensus agreement document and full ASUU reaction. Statesmanship on all sides is called for at this point in time.

Thank you.

Prof. Mobolaji E. Aluko
Vice-Chancellor
Federal University Otuoke
