Bayelsa Community That Has Never Had a Health Centre by Pukkah: 12:49pm On Oct 22, 2013 |
The Obogolo community, Yenagoa Local Government, Bayelsa State, has lamented the absence of health care centres. The residents claimed that avoidable deaths had become a recurring decimal in the predominantly Ijaw community that has never had a hospital. In a bid to salvage the situation, the National Association of Sea Dogs in collaboration with the Rural Africa Health Initiative over the weekend, reportedly offered free health services to the community. Residents were checked on a wide range of ailments including eye diseases, said to be ravaging most elderly people in the community. A resident, Mrs. Joy Lion, said, “In this community, we have no hospital, no health care centres. Occasionally, health workers come here and use the community town hall. As I speak to you, they have only come once this year. “We have been crying to the government but no one has responded. We are appealing to the government to come to our aid to avoid recurring deaths in the community. When people take ill, they resort to herbs and other available options which have their limits.” Though they admitted the neglect had been an age-long thing, they however said the current administration of Seriake Dickson had not done anything significant to ameliorate their predicament. Another resident and civil servant, Mr. Okitah Ganagana, told PUNCH Metro that the community was in a precarious situation. He said, “The visit of NASD and RAHI is a timely intervention. Right now, the doctors are on strike. Even when they are not on strike, the situation is the same here. “We do not have any health centres and the town hall, which they use at times, is not functional. When you are ill, you are on your own. Those who can afford it, go to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, which is quite some distance from Obogolo.” As for Mr. Ebimobere Africa, many people in the community die ‘cheaply’ as a result of absence of medical centres. “My family has resorted to self-medication. If anyone of us is sick, we go to the nearby bush to look for herbs. I do not go to hospital because the place is far and I do not have money to do so,” Africa said. Speaking on the rationale behind the outreach programme, NASD Area Mate, South-South region, Mr. Emmanuel Dufegha, said they came to the community because they had identified it as one that was lacking medical facility. Dufegha said, “This community has been identified as lacking medical facilities. Through this outreach, we carry out tests on a wide range of ailments. You know some of these sicknesses, if not quickly identified, could lead to death. “We take this as routine event and depending on the requirement of the area, we know what to do. Our activities are voluntary and it is self-sponsored.” http://www.punchng.com/metro/bayelsa-community-decries-absence-of-health-centre/ 1 Like |

Is there any human being who does not feel outraged about this sad and sickening report? You mean a whole community in Bayelsa has never had a health centre? Where is all the Federal Allocations, Excess Crude funds, Derivation Funds, IGR that have been accruing to this state since 1999 (let's even ignore the years before then)? What has the NDDC been doing? What has the Ministry of Niger Delta been doing? Can the bigots who trumpet the nonsense that 'oil is our resource' see how the 'owners' of the oil are living in poverty and penury? They go to the bush to get herbs for sickness!!! In this century and with all the oil money!!! Can the people defending the militants who are buying private jets and building universities see that the militants are in it for themselves? Bayelsa people should not be living like this at all. The state is oil rich, has a very small land mass and a low population. Bayelsa should be the Dubai of Nigeria. All the former governors of the state (Alamieyeseigha - who got a Presidential pardon after being convicted of corruption , Goodluck Jonathan - the current President, Timipre Silva - also being tried for corruption) should use their both hands to cover their faces in shame!!! 29 Likes |

What a shame! Never heard a health centre? Its simply unbelievable but shamefully true! Every Bayelsa man, irrespective of his community or LGA that has a house of his own anywhere in d world should bow his head in shame after seeing this! This is really anger provoking 3 Likes |

The total revenue to Bayelsa in 14 years, assuming an average of N8billion per month, comes to a staggering figure of N1.3trillion!!! Even if we back out recurrent expenditure, can the previous and current leaders of that state of about 2million people tell us what is on ground as a representation of these huge funds? This figure is off the cuff and I challenge those who have the time or the detailed information to provide a more accurate one. Go to Yenagoa and most of the decent houses you see belong to former and present officials of government!!! Is this not man's inhumanity to man? 5 Likes |

Pukkah, your grieviances are gunuine. But you should know that Nairaland is the "wrongest" place to vent it. You've only succeeded in bringing a defect in the state (similar situations found all over the country, even in Abuja) to be ridicled & vilified by uncouthed individuals who know nothing of the situation in Bayelsa. There are better ways you could have handled this since you're so concerned. You could've even mobilize a protest to Bayelsa Government House but here you are washing your dirty linens in the public and giving wolves and jackals an opportunity to tear apart your own state. Most of these people saying rubbish here come from a state where their best governor so far can't even match the worst governor from Bayelsa. Put on your thinking cap. 1 Like |

I'm sorry, I disagree. Why should he "mobilize a protest"? Is he from Bayelsa state? Does he live there? What DIRECT stake does he have in the self-inflicted calamity that is the Niger Delta? If anything, it is YOU that should be taking your own advice. 5 Likes |

Is n't this a big shame! Nobody holds successive governments to account in Bayelsa. No health center in an entire community and no one is asking Dickson what he's doing with allocations. Meanwhile Amaechi who has built model health centers in every community in Rivers state is being castigated daily because of political differences with Gej. 4 Likes |

Without something as fundamental as a health centre, how would his life be secure during and after the protest? ibeg, forget the peaceful protest mobilisation, clamour that this thread should gain frontpage coverage and iPUNCH feature it, I bet you before the end of the year, health centres will spring up in your communities. Ranging from local govt councillors to LG chairman, the state house of assembly member representing that constituency to the senator representing them, the house of rep member nko? Plus the governor, commissioner etc... Are they st*pid or what? Now I know that common sense is not common. These people came out en mass to vote them in and the least they could do is to neglect them? Haba! |

How do you expect him to protest when there is no freedom of speech and expression in Bayelsa. Just that a young man asked Dickson question in a town hall meeting. The guy was arrested and has not been released till now. Your mother state Governor has face far more criticism on air (naija info) from his party people and still no arrest had been made. Bayelsa rumour mongering law scare people from saying anything. The state is now a military barrack 2 Likes |

Upon the years of Northern rulership, the north is still in deep poverty. Bayelsa has a President but is grossly underdeveloped. This is a lesson that it is not just voting for a President just because he is from your tribe but voting for a progressive mind. . However till I see that 'progressive mind', my vote still remains with GEJ till 2019 2 Likes |
