The importers want to receive their foreign goods direct in Onitsha.

The Anambra Shippers Association has called on the Federal Government to officially gazette the Onitsha River Port as an international cargo destination.

Emmanuel Akpaka, president of the association, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Onitsha, that this would make the port viable.

Mr. Akpaka noted that the initiative would also expand the frontiers of Onitsha that was located on the River Niger basin, as an international business hub.

“We want the port to be gazetted, in order for it to become a destination for cargo from anywhere in the world, whether China, Japan, Malaysia, America, or Britain.”

“So that our business brothers and sisters could ship their cargoes and goods direct from the foreign ports into Onitsha port.”

“And this can be done through a system of trans-loading tens of containers or some thousands of volumes of goods into badges to Onitsha direct and the importer receives his or her consignments in Onitsha.”

Akpaka commended the federal government for completing the port in time, as well as installing state-of-the-art facilities in it.

“We believe that all international businessmen and women have a stake in the positive wellbeing of the Onitsha port and we would also take it as our own,’’ he added.

The onitsha port should accommodate large barges that can be pulled by trawlers which can carry hundreds of containers, this would be followed by a drastic crash in the price of goods because of cheaper warehousing, cost of labour and cost of doing business in onitsha as compared to lagos, this would also speed up the migration of igbo out of lagos back to the east and the De congestion of lagos.
The maritime economy of Nigeria is about 25% of the economy and Onitsha must do everything possible to maximise its maritime endowment
onitsha can then be linked through railway to Awka, Nnewi, Enugu, Ebonyi
And to Orlu, Owerri, aba and port Harcourt and Uyo and ibaka

it seems the onitsha port chapter is no longer in FG list of important projects. No one should add it to GEJ's list of achievements in SE until it become useful to nigerian because for now everything about it is becoming lie day in day out.

Apples and oranges.

1. Lagos state conceived the project and the FG tagged along to be part of it and they paid their share of the cost. The project is only 20% FG's so we are talking about a very very minority stake.

2. The river port in Onisha is 100% FG and it's already built and equipped by the same FG.

3. So what else do you wan from the FG?

To teach you how to use is?

To force you to use it?

Do you need the FG to teach you how to tie your shoes too?

Just what else do you want?

Our land devastated by civil war has yet to be reconstructed. We need a Marshal Plan in the East not Lagos where Gowon's 3Rs commenced!

Above all, FG should build for us because we don't want to be accused of planning secession. That is why the Imo Airport the only such wholly built by the indegenes was handed over to FG to inspect. We don't want you sniffing around us all the time because of your morbid fear of our 'secession'- which our right under international laws. So let FG build for us!

Shouldn't you be asking why your folks are not using it?

The pics of the Onitsha River port i saw doesn't look like that of a port designed to handle much cargo. Even the cranes are skinny.

Its left for private operators to work in tandem with the Port-Harcourt Port to further transport Containers up-river..........Or better yet, just build a Railway.

It is very possible. I think the Port concession is at the final lap, which will see the concessionaires taking over the Port for efficient running. What gladdens my heart is the continued cordial relationship between Obi and Jonathan.

This has helped Anambra to attract enough federal presence: Onitsha Port, Oil producing status, reconstruction and remodeling of the Onitsha-Awka federal dual carriage highway, siting of the massive and impressive NAFDAC zonal laboratory in Agulu, among many other projects.

Anambra stands to benefit more from the center with the good relationship. All these could have gone away had Ngige got to that seat.

If we sau this government is insincere and inept, some loudmouths will hurl invectives.

The right thing to do from the beginning is to ensure that all impediments are removed to male sure that the port is operational immediately after the president or whoever officially launches the port.

This is what obtains in sane societies. It is sad, if it is true, that the port is not even gazzetted as an appropriate facility to receive and sibsequently distribute and export merchandise. This is the simplest thing to do.

Directing goods on through bills of lading with final destination Onitsha is the duty of receivers which they could gladly do. What remains is organising appropriate river craft to convey the goods, which I am sure has not been done... NPA, Shippers council, NIMASA,CUSTOMS ,NIWA,ANCLA ETC have not even started publicity here and abroad.

It is sheer ineptitude on display here. Onitsha biz community should not be deceived, unless these servant leaders remove their leadership tag and become real servants, nothing will happen.

Investors in river logistics should not wait. Market survey to establish iintegrity/ capacity of rivercraft to do the job, nterface with overseas/ local cargo interests agreed, relevant pricing and proceedures etc etc must be done.

Honestly, its a shame. What is happening to Onitsha is what will happen to Lokoja and other upriver destinations.

THERE IS SHIPPING AND THERE IS SHITTING..... IT DEPENDS ON WHICH ONE YOU ARE DOING!!!!!

NIGERIA WAKE UP.

The major hurdle seems to be the finance to acquire ocean going barges like those attached since the market for the goods are already there in onitsha . Also these ocean going barges will not only be good enough to sail to larger ships off the coast and to near by ocean terminals /ports but to foreign countries and trading nations

River Niger can also be dregded to the deep of Ocean going Vessels to Onitsha!. This can be done by Anambra & Delta-states in partnership with the FG! or ANAMBRA-STATE on it's own with permition from the FG.The cost should be in the region of 20 to 30billion Naira & can be recouped in a very short Time!.

Yes all electricity network in the East was done by the communities and not the federal or state govt.
80% of all road network in the East were created and handed over the tiers of government
They build over 4000 secondary and primary school and handed over to the governments since 1970.
Sam Mbakwe airport was built by community effort, not federal or even the state govt .
