Continuous naira volatility could spark DStv price increase-Multchoice Nigeria

The General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Multichoice Nigeria, Martin Mabutho has expressed possibility of a subscription price increase in pay TV services if naira volatility continues untamed by the Federal Government monetary agencies.

Mabutho, made this known in Lagos today while addressing the media on new content upgrade on all DStv bouquets.

Maputo said currently DStv is trying as much as possible to avoid any price increase and has continued to devote energy into upgrading its contents across all bouquets.

He said current forex regime has forced prices of foreign contents up. He cited that the broadcast right of English premiership among others foreign contents are traded in pounds, hence, putting pressure on the company.

“Most of the content we buy such as EPL, others from abroad is dominated in pounds, dollars. So, we are not only operating in the market but also responding to the market. At this stage, we are trying as much as we can to avoid any price increase but if there is nothing done to curtail the forex issues, we might be forced to increase,” he said.

But contrary to general price hike of goods and services, Multichoice Nigeria has thrilled its DSTV subscribers with additional variety of High Definition (HD) channels on its various packages at relatively zero additional cost.

From November onward, he said subscribers will experience enhanced content upgrade including three additional HD channels on DSTV premium plan, eleven additional premium content channels on DSTV Compact plus, six fresh channels on DSTV Compact, six exciting channels on the DSTV family and four new channels on DSTV Access.

Mabutho, said this is an unusual business strategy targeted at helping subscribers derive robust satisfaction devoid of price hike.

He said despite the fact that contents are sourced at exorbitant rates from multinationals, the firm remains committed to maintaining steady price range especially for value added services in the long term.

He assured that entertainment will take a new turn with the incorporation of more local contents such as Arewa, a local station in the north, Rock from Iroko TV while specific channels will be dedicated to movie icons including James Bond and Harry Porter.

Mabutho also announced its partnership with veteran comedian, Basket Mouth as its new ambassador promoting the content changes.

He said: “This October, DStv Premium customers will celebrate with M-Net on the M-Net Movies Block party pop-up channel on 109, and can look forward to more exciting channels in the coming months like the M-Net Movies Harry Porter pop-up channel. For the first time, DStvBoxOffice introduces the GREEN button sale feature which allows subscribers rent a movie at discounted price of N286 on selected movies only. The GREEN button sale on these select movies will be available for a limited period only before they leave BoxOffice completely. This is one of the most aggressive content shake up we have had.”

Also, tHhe Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, explained the drive behind the adjustment said: “It is to define moments in the African entertainment landscape. This major boost in entertainment value across all DStv bouquets demonstrates our commitment to ensuring DStv customers receive great entertainment and best-in-class value. The price reductions in our state of the art decoders Explora and HD Zapper will ensure that great family entertainment is available the most affordable price. We are all living in tough economic times and while the everyday costs of food, water, power and fuel are increasing at an alarming rate, we recognize that there is still a need to take time to escape and relax with the family at home to enjoy quality and entertaining programmes from movies to sports, series, documentaries and a whole lot more.”
