Eaglets, Guinea fight to finish Wednesday

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will battle Guinea on Wednesday in a Group A match at the African U17 Championship which could well determine World Cup qualification for either side.

The Eaglets beat hosts Niger 2-0 in the opening match of the tournament on Sunday and Guinea also beat Zambia 1-0 in the other game of the group.

Thus a win for either side on Wednesday would guarantee them six points, a place in the semi-finals of the competition as well as a berth at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile.

Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke saluted his team for getting off to a winning start, while promising improvements in subsequent matches.

“The most important thing in football today is to win. It was important for us to win our first game,” he said.

“We took our chances and defended very well.

“Now we have to see how we can grow from strength to strength.”

Guinea skipper Mohamed Mory Korouma promised his team will be better against Nigeria on Wednesday.

“We are more talented than what we showed today (against Zambia),” he said.

“In the next games, we will show our talents.”

Guinea were without three of their top stars on account of injury.

'Nigerian Messi' Picks Holland Over Nigeria

Barcelona loanee Bobby Adekanye is set to commit his international future to Holland instead of his country of birth, Nigeria.

The Royal Dutch Football Association is in the driving seat to cap the highly-rated winger after he was included by Coach Edwin Petersen on the roster for the upcoming UEFA Development Tournament.

Ademola Adekanye, Bobby's dad, has reiterated that the NFF did not attempt to persuade the PSV Eindhoven starlet to represent any of their youth teams, and it would have been disrespectful to give a negative response to the KNVB.

''Bobby is going with the Dutch under 16 team to Portugal. They are scheduled to play three games, against Spain, Portugal and Deutschland,'' said Ademola Adekanye to SL10.ng.

''The door is not finally shut on Nigeria, nobody knows tomorrow if he will decide to play for Nigeria.

''The truth is that the Nigeria Federation never invited him, but Netherlands did and he needs to respect them.''

According to Fifa rules, the door is still open for Bobby Adekanye to defend the colors of Nigeria until he plays a Fifa-sanctioned competitive game for Het Nederland’s Elftal.

ADO Den Haag winger Segun Owobowale represented Holland at the 2014 European Under-17 Championship, but it has been 'claimed' that he has opted to play for the Super Eagles in future.

Eaglets Coach Praises His Team For Niger Win

Despite securing a 2-0 win over hosts Niger at the ongoing CAF U17 championship, Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has posited that his wards must play better in their next game.

Victor Osimhen and Captain Kelechi Nwakali gave the Eaglets a 2-goal cushion in the first half, raising expectations it was going to be a goal-fest for the Nigerians, but the Nigeriens held firm to ensure they weren’t embarrassed any further by their more illustrious neighbours.

And ahead of their second group game against Guinea at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché, Niamey, Amuneke says he expects his wards to perform better.

“We didn’t play badly but I thought we could have done better,” Amuneke began.

“It’s not always easy when you play against the hosts, but we were a better team and thank God we won in the end.

“But we have to play better against the Guineans and I have said that to the players. We expect that the Guineans will be tougher, so we also have to be tougher and better than we were against Niger.”

The former African footballer of the year however believes his players showed great strength in their win over the Nigeriens.

“We showed great strength and character and I am proud of the boys, I just hope they improve before the next match,” Amuneke told sl10.ng.

NFF: Too Much Pressure On Eaglets

General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation Musa Amadu has warned against putting ‘intense pressure’ on the Golden Eaglets to emulate the feat of their predecessors.

The Nigerian U17’s got a 2-0 win over hosts Niger in their opening fixture of the ongoing CAF U17 championship, but was greeted with mixed feelings as most fans felt they should have scored more.

Amadu believes it won’t be wise to expect this team to be the exact same as the last set, thereby putting them under ‘intense pressure’.

“I don’t think we should put intense pressure on the boys,” Amadu said to sl10.ng. “It was only their first game and I would say a 2-0 win is a good way to start.

“We do expect them to improve as the tournament wears on but I suggest we don’t put them under any intense pressure.”

The Eaglets led by Manu Garba were runners-up at the last edition in Morocco in 2013, and Coach Emmanuel Amuneke has already set his sights at winning the competition this time, but Amadu believes there shouldn’t be too much comparison with the class of 2013.

“The 2013 U17 was a different team and this is a different team so I don’t think we should be comparing both of them,” Amadu posited

Pinnick Meets With English-Based Nigerian Players' Parents

President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick has met with parents of some Nigerian youngsters across the top rank in England.

“I was able to see Kenneth Omeruo and Chuba Akpom at their match on Saturday. I am meeting the parents of a number of these youngsters this time and have plans to meet all of them and also their parents in due course,” he said of his trip to England.

“You see, some of them might have represented England at junior level, but they are willing to represent Nigeria at senior level, and that is what we are looking at. We are looking at strengthening our teams at all levels and these players are willing, once we can convince them that there is a new set-up in Nigeria football.”

Pinnick is expected to have discussions with the parents of 18 year old attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi of Arsenal, who has joined up with the country’s Olympic Team ahead of their departure for an 11th All-Africa Games qualifying match against Gabon in Libreville on Saturday, as well as former Chelsea centre back Joshua Debayo, also 18, now on the books of another Premiership team, Southampton. Debayo is also an England U-18 international.

There is also Fejiri Okenabirhie, 19 year old former Arsenal winger, now with Stevenage.

19 year old Brighton FC striker Chike Kandi, formerly with Chelsea FC and Chelsea and England U-19 defender Ola Aina, 18.

Mayowa Balogun, 18, is a versatile defender with Wigan Athletic FC while Arsenal defender Semi Ajayi is getting better by the day.

NFF Calls On Golden Eaglets To Go All Out For A Win

The Nigeria Football Federation has called on the U-17 National Team, Golden Eaglets, to go all out for a win against Guinea’s Syli Babes in Niamey on Wednesday.

The top-of-the-table clash at the Stade General Seyni Kountche starts at 3pm and the winner will automatically become the first African flag bearer at the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals in Chile later in the year.

NFF’s Director of Competitions, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who is in Niamey with the team, said a victory is non-negotiable as Nigeria look to book an early ticket to the finals in Chile to go and defend the world title.

“We are the champions of the world, and that we must underscore boldly here. The Eaglets did well to win their first match against the host nation despite all the odds against them. There is no way Guinea will stand up to our boys on Wednesday.

“The NFF has provided everything the team needs to succeed and we expect nothing but victory against the Guineans.”

A 2-0 win over host Niger Republic, courtesy goals by Victor Osimhen and Captain Kelechi Nwakali, took the world champions to the top of the table, and Guinea’s 1-0 win over Zambia put the Syli Babes in second place.

Akpom is certainly a good one.

He should also speak to Deji Alli, Solanke and Jordan Ibe.

Those are the ones with real potential.

Ajayi of Arsenal is not that good. He still needs to improve a lot.

Injured Eaglets midfielder resumes training

Golden Eaglets midfielder Kingsley Michael could be back in action on Wednesday when Nigeria face Guinea in their second group match at the CAF U17 Championship as he has returned to training.

Michael, who was in the thick of action when Golden Eaglets defeated hosts Niger Republic 2-0 in the opening game, limped off when he was knocked on the thigh by an adventurous defender, but he is back and running under close supervision of the team's medical staff and he is excited.

"I'm feeling much better," an excited Michael said as if he had won a lottery.

"Of course, I can't declare myself fit to play until our doctor says so but I'm very much okay now.

"Our coaches have been working on us; if we improve on our marking and scoring ability, we can do much better.

“We have quality in our team and if we get things right, we are going to beat Guinea."

Amuneke warns Guinea will be tricky

Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke has warned Guinea will be tricky customers on Wednesday in a crucial CAF U17 Championship clash in Niamey.

Both Nigeria and Guinea won their opening group games and will be battling for qualification to the knockout stage on Wednesday.

"We are not getting carried away after the victory against Niger because we know Guinea can be tricky after watching them against Zambia," noted Amuneke.

"We came here with one objective: To qualify for the World Cup in Chile and after that we can begin to talk about other things.

You can see that if you allow them, they can play but if you follow our instructions, we would all have reason to celebrate on Wednesday after the game."

Already, the Nigerian camp has indentified gifted number 11-shirted Abddoulaye Jules Keita as the lynchpin in the Guinean line-up as well as captain Mohammed Mary Kurume who holds forth in defence, not forgetting agile goalkeeper Mousa Camara, who foiled Zambia repeatedly on Sunday.

The Guineans will seek to avenge their twin loss to their Nigerian counterparts on the road to the last championship in Morocco following a 3-0 and 4-0 win in Calabar and Conakry, respectively.

Niger 2015: CAF picks Congolese referee for Eaglets

The Golden Eaglets would for the second time at the 11th African U-17 Championship in Niger have the benefit of wearing the country's home gear against Guinea on Wednesday.

The Eaglets began their campaign at Niger 2015 on Sunday against Niger in the traditional green jerseys and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has again approved same for the match against Guinea.

Complete

The goalkeepers would wear complete blue colours. On the other hand, Guinean players would spot red shirt, yellow shorts and white socks.

The match will kick off at 4:00pm Nigerian time at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché (SGSK), and the center referee would be handled by Ndala Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ngambo, who was born in 1987, has been an international referee since 2013 and he has honed his skills in major African competitions including the CAF Champions League.

Equal

To serve as referee assistants are the duo of Arsénio Chadreque Marengula from Mozambique and Senegalese Serigne Cheikh Toure who was equally on duty on Sunday when Nigeria beat Niger.

Lazard Tsiba Kamba from Congo is the fourth and reserved referee while Ngenzi Raul Gisanura would be the match commissioner.
