PRECIOUS FREE PERIODS
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 9:10-13

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest" (ECCLESIASTES 9:10).

Many schools deliberately leave certain periods of the class timetable free of any lesson. However, it is done sometimes to avoid clash of lessons. They could be precious free periods.

While the unwise students play and loaf around during such periods, wise students busy themselves with activities that would enhance their academic performance. Be wise!

Have you graduated from one level of education and waiting for admission to an institution of higher learning? That is not a free period. You can learn a skill, take a short professional course or even attach yourself to an entrepreneur with a view to taking practical lessons on how to run a business.

Free wasteful periods exist only in the graves. Free periods can also be used for personal Bible study, meditation and prayers.
Watchman Nee wrote, "A diligent person is never idle, he is always looking for things to do. He is always pondering, praying, contemplating and considering before God as to what he should do."

Quote: "A diligent person is never idle."

Chɑllenge: "Always occupy yourself in productive activities"

Prɑyer: "Teach me how best to use my time, Lord."

VICTORY IN CARING
TEXT: LUKE 10:25-37

"But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him" (LUKE 10:33).

It was a Special Olympics where handicapped children competed with tremendous dedication and enthusiasm. In a 220-yard dash event, contestants lined up at the starting line, and at the blast of the whistle, started running as fast as they could. Andrew quickly took the lead, and was soon about 50 yards ahead of everybody else. As he approached the final turn, he looked back and saw that his best friend had fallen and hurt himself on the track. Andrew stopped and looked at the finish line. People were hollering, "Run, Andrew, run." But he did not. Rather, he went back, helped his friend up, brushed off the dust from his body, and, hand-in-hand, they crossed the finish line dead last. But as they did, the spectators cheered, because there are some things more important than winning.

As a child of God, your goal should be to develop both winning and caring attitudes, because if you care for others, you win. Do not let an opportunity to help pass you by, no matter the urgency before you. Be like the Samaritan in our text.

Quote: "If you care for others, you win."

Chɑllenge: "Do not let an opportunity to help pass you by"

Prɑyer: "Help me Lord to have a caring spirit."

FREEDOM FOR A FIGHTER
TEXT: ACTS 9:1-6

"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" (ROMANS 7:24).

Former heavyweight boxing champion, George Foreman, was a heavy drinker. He drank anything from water to spirit. But, as he recounts in his book, "God in My Corner," on one of his birthdays, he got so drunk that he could not remember what happened that night. The next day, he ran into his friend who had been badly beaten up, and had a swollen eye with other bruises. He asked to know what happened. "Don't you remember?" the friend retorted. "You beat me up last night!" That stunned George and shook him so much that he decided to never take another drink of alcohol in his life.

Do you have a bad habit which you think is difficult to quit? Yours could be indulgence in examination malpractice, disobedience or insubordination to your parents or school authority, involvement in cultism, drug addiction, careless use of your tongue, pornography, or other forms of immoral practices. And with these practices, you cannot make heaven. But remember that with God, all things are possible. Just pray and yield to Him.

Quote: "With God, all things are possible."

Chɑllenge: "Do you have a bad habit?"

Prɑyer: "Lord, take away any bad habit from me."

BEWARE OF VENGEANCE
TEXT: 1 THESSALONIANS 5:12-15

"See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men" (1 THESSALONIANS 5:15).

A couple in England started receiving mysterious phone calls to their home in the night. The person on the other end would never make a comment, and after a long pause, he would hang up.

To stop the harassing night calls, the couple decided to change their phone number. But the stalker also changed his tactic by sending them obscene and threatening anonymous letters or mails.

The man also daubed their house with paint and slashed their tyres, making the couple prisoners in their own home and causing them to spend some fortune on security system. They had no idea what they had done to deserve such cruel treatment.

After four months of that unexplained terrorism, they finally found out that the perpetrator was a 53-year-old man, who assumed he was terrorising a man, who had been blackmailing him.

Avoid assumptions and vengeance; they make you hasten to wrong conclusions. Even when you are innocent, always seek peace and reconciliation with offenders. It does not pay to pay back evil for evil, especially as a child of God.

Quote: "It does not pay to pay back evil for evil."

Chɑllenge: "Always do good and seek peace"

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me a spirit of reconciliation."

ACCELERATE ACTION
TEXT: JOHN 9:1-7

"I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work" (JOHN 9:4).

"Everyone who is ever used by God labours and works diligently in His service. He is always on the alert lest he squandered his time or strength. Those who are always looking for opportunity for rest and recreation are not worthy of being called God's servants," said Watchman Nee. Reading through Matthew Henry's Commentary, you would think that it took a century to write; but the author did not even live up to 60 years. One could say similar things of the prolific Christian writer and preacher, C. H. Spurgeon. They laboured in the Christian ministry diligently.

Apostle Paul, who preached all over Asia and wrote about half of the books of the New Testament stated, "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11). You would work with a sense of urgency like Christ in our text above if you had a vision that has become a consuming passion. Education, career and Christian service are areas of vision and passion. As God's child, pray for guidance and labour diligently to fulfil your destiny. Without haste, visions are wasted.

Quote: "Without haste, visions are wasted."

Chɑllenge: "Take a leap of faith"

Prɑyer: "Lord, empower me to fulfil my destiny."

DISCIPLINE PAYS
TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 9:24-27

"He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity" (JOB 36:10).

George Foreman was a two-time heavyweight boxing champion of the world. At the age of 45, he became the oldest man in the world to win the title. He started his comeback by getting rid of his excess weight, after ballooning from 220 to 315 pounds.

He got back into a daily exercise regimen. But because he was so out of shape, he could not run beyond a mile, before gasping for air. Everyone ridiculed him each time he slowly shuffled past their houses.

Only two people believed he could recapture the title - he and his wife. But, proper diet and regular exercise helped George to finally regain his weight of 229 pounds, and he went ahead to win the championship title.

Something may be eating you up. All you need do is to discipline yourself to overcome your challenges. Your friends may ridicule and discourage you, but be resolute, if you know that you are on the right track.

Your own over-weight could be an inexplicable indulgence in immorality. Repent, and the LORD will help you.

Quote: "Discipline yourself."

Chɑllenge: "Be resolute, if you know that you are on the right track"

Prɑyer: "Help me, O God, to set achievable goals."

ROCKY RELATIONSHIP
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 3:12-17

"And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation" (2 CORINTHIANS 5:18).

A teacher thought about the importance of making people feel valued. So, he asked his class to imagine they were about to die and to write a note telling someone how and why they appreciated them.

One of the students who had a rocky relationship with her mom decided to write her. Her letter reads, "We've had some rough times and I haven't always been a very good daughter, but I know I'm lucky to have you in my life.

"You are the best person I've ever known. And even when I disagree with you, I never doubt you love me and want what's best for me. Thanks for not giving up on me." When Evelyn's mom read the note, she cried and hugged her tightly but said very little. She later wrote a note to her telling her that being her mother was, by far, the most important thing in her life.

God can heal any rocky relationship. Just pray, apologise and give reassurance of your trust in those offended. Are you bearing grudges with someone, "...even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye."

Quote: "God can heal any rocky relationship."

Chɑllenge: "Relationships grow better with Jesus"

Prɑyer: "Help me Lord, to set things right with everyone."

THE DETERMINED DAVID
TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:42-52

"And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine" (1 SAMUEL 17:32).

Karen E. Quinones Miller powerfully declared, "When someone tells me 'no', it doesn't mean I can't do it, it simply means I can't do it with them." What an apt quote for our devotion today!

Saul and the entire army of Israel could not join David on that seemingly impossible mission of confronting Goliath. Little wonder, then, "...Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth" (1 Samuel 17:33).

Despite discouragement, David passionately pursued his dream to a logical conclusion - and then he became a champion! Similarly, you too can prevail in secular or spiritual pursuits, if you ignore discouragements of all sorts!

Is anybody discouraging you about any school subject or a course you are interested in and have the aptitude for? Like David, just ignore them, trust in God and work harder; your success is sure. Ruth also had her fair share of discouragement, but her determination saw her through to an enduring triumph.

Quote: "Trust in God and work harder; your success is sure."

Chɑllenge: "Ignore discouragements and achieve your dream"

Prɑyer: "Father, empower me for all round success."

PRESS TOWARD THE MARK
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3:12-16

"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (PHILIPPIANS 3:14).

In a piece of advice to believers, Tony Fox says, "This is the time for us to make the necessary adjustments if there are things we need to change in our lives so that we may bring glory to God."

Receiving eternal life in God's presence in heaven is the "high calling" to which Paul is referring in the verse above. To press toward it, therefore, means to exert deliberate, maximum effort for the purpose of attaining it, just as a runner in a race drives for the finish line.
The Christian must continually strive toward that goal through service and obedience, and in love and gratitude to God, for the final salvation.
Of course, the possibility of eternal life in heaven for the Christian is there only through God's grace and Jesus' saving work, rather than anything that we do in this life.

So, it demands that we surrender our lives totally to God and "...lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1).

Quote: "Surrender your life totally to God?"

Chɑllenge: "How do you run the heavenly race"

Prɑyer: "O Lord, help me not to miss the prize of God's high calling."

BEGINNING OF BREAKTHROUGHS
TEXT: ISAIAH 43:15-19

"Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert" (ISAIAH 43:19).

God expects us to forget and march out of past failures to experience bountiful breakthroughs. Apostle Paul best understood this very well. In Philippians 3:13, he disclosed his motto for his breakthroughs: "...but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before." Jordan Adler explains this further that, "Every breakthrough is born out of a shift in viewpoint that transforms how a set of circumstances is perceived."

Today's meditation is a declaration for breakthroughs from the Almighty for all His children. God wants us to forget the past setbacks, failures and inabilities in our respective undertakings. His desire is that we move forward.

Today, He declares a new dawn for all His children: a new day, a new week, a new month and a new year of breakthroughs. He is saying success will begin to flow from where failure has lingered. But you must be a true child of God for a new thing to come forth for you. Obey and act on His promise for breakthroughs.

Quote: "God wants us to forget past failures"

Chɑllenge: "Obedience to God's promise leads to breakthroughs"

Prɑyer: "Do a new thing in my life, O God."

A WOMAN WORTHY OF PRAISE
TEXT: PROVERBS 31:21-30

"Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come" (PROVERBS 31:25).

Virtue promotes and puts you in a position of honour without you asking for it. A virtuous woman earns her self-respect because of her good and gracious life. Your commitment to serve humanity would certainly bring blessings to people's lives; and out of appreciation, they will praise God for your life.

Our text gives us a portrait of a believing woman who was dutiful and committed to rendering acceptable service before God and humanity. She was not afraid of the snow; so, she was not a lazy woman. She was industrious, full of wisdom, knowledge and discretion.

Christian youths should learn from this virtuous woman who lived her life to please others. Believers in Christ have the responsibility of sharing the gospel with their family members and friends to bring them out of bondage into the marvellous light of the Kingdom of God.
Like this virtuous woman, God expects you to be committed to whatsoever your hands find to do. By implication, it means you have to be committed to your studies in order to excel in life and ministry.

Quote: "She was not a lazy woman"

Chɑllenge: "Honour follows those who are sacrificial"

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to live a sacrificial life."

ADVANCEMENT IN ADVERSITY
TEXT: EXODUS 14:13-21

"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience" (JAMES 1:2-3).

The life of a man can be likened to that of a tree which is subject to unpredictable circumstances. The tree is often hit by harsh weather, storms, fire, earthquake and so on. If cut down, it can spring up again and be restored to life. In like manner, man experiences tough times in all spheres of life, but would bounce back strong if he is determined.

From the text, the children of Israel were faced with possible death from the Egyptians; and the Red Sea was a barrier to their escape. This adversity seemed insurmountable for them, but God in His infinite power rescued them in a miraculous way.

This adversity came as the children of Israel took an important step of breaking free from slavery to serve God. This implies that the devil is ready to hinder people from being saved from sin.

Charles Stanley says, "The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor." You should never act like the children of Ephraim who despite being armed, turned back in the day of battle (Psalm 78:9).

Quote: "It can spring up again"

Chɑllenge: "Honour follows those who are sacrificial"

Prɑyer: "Heavenly Father, give me the enablement and strength to overcome."

ADVENTUROUS YOUTH
TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:31-38

"And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth" (1 SAMUEL 17:33).

Why are so many youths of today turned off? Why do they drop out? Should life be so boring for young people? Is there any real adventure left in our times? Or are the only adventures left in our society found in immorality, drugs and violence?

May be you are young and full of zest. Do you like challenges? Then take the challenge of using your God-given talents and gifts to serve your Creator in the way He intends you use them. Be active!

David was a fearless and adventurous young man. He dared to confront Goliath whom even the most experienced men of war in Israel dreaded. Though King Saul doubted his ability, David did not allow this to deter him. His faith, strength and courage were hinged on the all-powerful Jehovah and His past faithfulness to him.

We need more daring boys and girls today whose strong faith in God will move them to explore unknown regions and accomplish great feats for God's glory and the good of mankind. Enlist in God's army and be an adventurous evangelist.

Quote: "We need more daring boys and girls"

Chɑllenge: "Have you lost the Spirit of adventure?"

Prɑyer: "O God, create in me the zeal for Your work."

ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS
TEXT: EPHESIANS 1:1-14

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ" (EPHESIANS 1:3).

Paul the Apostle, in approximately A.D. 60, from Rome (as a prisoner for Christ), wrote to the Church at Ephesus to strengthen and encourage them about their identity and unity in Christ. He taught them about the availability of the inexhaustible blessings that had been purchased for them freely, by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. These blessings include their peace from God, redemption through His blood, adoption as children, and sanctification in Christ.

However, this letter was not just to the Church at Ephesus alone, but also to all faithful believers in Christ today who have been chosen by Him, so that He might provide us with all the resources for all our endeavours according to the riches of His grace.

Why are Christian youths still living without the evidence of God's riches in spite of His obvious magnanimity and benefits through Christ? It is the responsibility of all Christian youths to tap from Christ's overflowing wealth through the prayer of faith. However, you must be born again to be able to receive and enjoy all the blessings.

Quote: "These blessings include peace from God"

Chɑllenge: "Have faith in Christ"

Prɑyer: "O God, help me to enjoy the blessings provided for me on the cross."

AN ABSOLUTE KING'S ADMISSION
TEXT: EXODUS 9:25-37

"And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time: the LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked" (EXODUS 9:27).

To admit is to acknowledge, own up or confess that something is true. Admission in this context is accepting the reality of God's existence, judgment and power.

Our text today reveals the plague that befell the Egyptians as a result of the hardness of the heart of pharaoh who was the king in Egypt at that time. His ungodly and selfish decision brought suffering to the Egyptians. Pharaoh admitted his sinfulness when he realized God's faithful judgment. However, he failed to yield himself fully to God to obtain full pardon.

You should not wait for the wrath of God before repenting genuinely of your sinful lifestyle. God will always forgive as many as acknowledge and admit their sinful states; and confess their sin, pleading for pardon.

As God preserved the children of Israel in the midst of the plague, He will always protect youths who are holy and righteous. The challenge is for you to admit your sinfulness today and accept Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He is not willing that you should perish in hell!

Quote: "He is not willing that you should perish"

Chɑllenge: "Do not dare God"

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to honour You with my life."

ARE YOU BACKSLIDING IN HEART?
TEXT: 2 TIMOTHY 4:9-11

"The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself" (PROVERBS 14:14).

The word 'backslide' spiritually means 'turn back' or 'turn away' from God, to Satan, to evil or to the world. Backsliding starts in the heart before its physical manifestation. Spiritual decay is a gradual process; and Satan is very subtle such that the decay in the heart of the backslider may be nearly imperceptible. No one is above backsliding!

Backsliding may begin with the general feelings of spiritual indifference. Moreover, prayer life becomes difficult; hunger for the word of God diminishes; attendance at fellowship becomes inconsistent and zeal for soul winning subsides. With time, the fear of God departs and a complete reordering of priorities in the backslider occurs.

If you are experiencing these signs, it shows you are backsliding or already backslidden. It means you need to return to God through fervent prayers till you find the light of God's countenance and love on you again. There is a need to constantly watch and pray, walk in the spirit, and be obedient to the word of God always. Do regular self-examination to overcome backsliding. May the Lord keep you from falling. Amen.

Quote: "Constantly watch and pray"

Chɑllenge: "Search me O God, and know my heart"

Prɑyer: "Lord! Keep me from falling."

AVOID EVIL ASSOCIATION
TEXT: EPHESIANS 5:6-12

"My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not" (PROVERBS 1:10).

A female Junior Secondary School student in a secondary school had the privilege of being brought up in a home where true Christian values were taught and practised. Her mother, the school and religious instructors, did all they could to encourage her to attain great goals in life, but she refused to listen to them and rather followed the advice of bad friends who misled her. The result of her wayward life were unwanted pregnancy, suffering and delayed academic progress. In all, she was the architect of her downfall.

Today's text warns us against deceit from evil peers and also enjoins us to avoid friendship with them. Evil boys and girls are in our schools and neighbourhood. Make up your mind today to avoid them, so that you will not be influenced by their ungodly practices.

Are you among those causing violence and chaos in schools and in the community? If yes, repent today and receive pardon from Jesus Christ. Remember, refusal to keep away from evil association may lead to untimely death. Avoid it now and always.

Quote: "It may lead to untimely death"

Chɑllenge: "Evil communication corrupts good manners"

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me the courage to avoid evil peers."
