People are so uninformed about sickle cell disease and traits, it's really unfortunate. See advice to gamble with a child's life. Until you see a child ill for most of his [short] life, needing frequent blood transfusions just to stay alive, and in the end, begging you to let him die because he's tired of living in pain... Until you watch his parents cry over his body, the third child they've had to bury due to SSD... You'll understand what it means.

Some parents wouldn't want to disclose the genotype of their children especially if the children are sicklers because of stigma.

I did not see their medical reports but when you see a child that has the sickel cell gene, you will know. It is not as if they are still young. The youngest is 10.

I know them very well. Not that you certainly will have SS when you are AS and marry another AS. The stats say 1 in 4. However, I will never take such a risk having seen my own uncle lose his beautiful daughter after selling almost all he had.

I will rather ask for your genotype first than to ask for your love. so @op just take your time u gonna love again love is to human and it develops so u guys were never lovers from heaven u started here on earth which means u can love again BT its not easy BT u have to cope

Well there are some solutions and the two solution that are commonly use now are :- 1 through IVF an 2 Evacuating and testing method. The evacuating method is a process where by the couple will go for test to know if the baby that the wife is carrying is SS or AS and once the baby is SS they will Evacuate the pregnancy and that is what that will keep on doing till they have AS or AA cos they both have chances of 25% of AA and AS while they both have 50% chances of SS.

chance of AS, 1/4 chance of SS.

Using IVF for implantation and then having a CVS (chorionic vilus sampling) to test for the genotype, its a little more complicated, but it will tell you which babies have which genotype. You can then choose to have any baby with the So Genotype terminated and leave healthy babies.

however, there is an obvious moral angle here because that would mean aborting the fetus with the SS Genotype. Some people consider it unethical but that's not what this topic is about and again it's all up to you.

CVS test itself has its own risks just like everything in life

If you are not yet married, I will advise against such union. There is a thin line between tempting faith and medical facts!!!!

I am also AS and I understand deavicky well. I have been in that situation as well. And having found another girl who I truly love and who luckily happen to be AA and then had to return to the good LORD, I know for sure it is easier someone dying and you not marrying them than you having to break up with due to genotype.

It is difficult when someone dies and I would rather my angel lives than die but at least I do not have the fear of trying again which comes with having to dump someone cos of genotype.

you are disappointing Genea.... you call urself a med student and u advice such..... do u know wat it means to get a Stem cell donor match(not necessarily a bone marrow)...... most times, the couple still have to give birth to anoda child and the umbilical cord blood z used, DT new child could turn out to be SS too ,wat do u do den.... do u know how expensive it z.... do u know d failure rate keeping in mind DT d money z not refundable... I bet u r in ur preclinical years....so ur ignorance z pardoned

i think it is possible, it is a game of chance. The chance that a pregnant woman will give birth to a boy is like 50%,likewise her chance of giving birth to a girl is 50%. but she might give birth to 7 girls consecutively.

The chance that two AS couples will not give birth to sicklers is 75%. Is the 25% risk worth taking? It is possible the two AS couples give birth to 4 SS children consecutively

from scientific calculations if two AS couple have intercourse they would have children with the following genotype
AA AS AS SS

though in some cases i have seen all the children were either AA or AS in some worst case scenario the children were all SS

the AA an AS children are not the problem , its the SS child whoma I PERSONALLY refer to as a VISA to HOSPITAL, POVERTY and MARRIAGE BREAK DOWN

VISA to HOSPITAL the SS child has set a record of always falling ill to the slightest provocation and most of these children do not live long, with this child the best thing is to relocate to a house near a hospital, THIS IS ONE REASON WHY AS AS marriage is seriously preached against

VISA TO POVERTY many people do not know that it takes about an average of 25,000 naira per week to manage an SS child, this amounts to about a 100,000 naira per month, imagine such an expense for a couple that has a salary of like 150,000 naira. just calculate 100,000 naira per month for like 10 years of marriage.. brethren that is poverty knocking at your door, this is another reason to avoid such marriages

VISA TO MARRIAGE BREAKDOWN: most marriages with SS child are always in turmoil, the LOVE is strained, everybody becomes angry at any provocation, each parent feels that it is the other persons fault that they are in this predicament, some even start cheating or considering SUICIDE.......this is why I personally advise people to enter a marriage that they might never enjoy

ADOPT simply decide with your wife that your marriage is not for procreation rather it would be for companionship, the adopt a child/children and treat them the way you would have treated your own actual offspring... its not easy but its worth it

IVF in vitro fertilization, here your wife is fertilized with the sperm of a donor, the advantage of this is that you get to choose the characteristics of the donor that you wish to see in you child like tall, handsome, STRONG FACE etc.....

STEM CELL TRANSPLANT here your own child would undergo a process which can lead to genotype change...

NOTE: it is an expensive process and to be sincere i can vouch for nigeria as the best place to do this

PRAYER I am not telling you to pray to GOD to change your child's genotype, rather pray for things like GRACE,LOVE MONEY etc that will help you manage your family
