AjanleKoko: Hehehe. Like most things Nigerian, the military is overwhelmed with oversabi and arrogance devoid of actual substance.

What did you expect, that the Nigerian military will open its gates to the American they did not invite and change its TRADOC because of one insurgency. It won't happen under any government, any no matter who the head of state is.

I'm sure the military wants this whole thing to be mission specific and help restricted to intel but the politicians and the public want more horse drinking. It won't happen particularly when you are dealing with a people more institutionalised than you are and expecting results from problems they - the military know you - the politicians caused. Why should they suffer the indignity.

koastar: Nigerian military uncooperative, slow to learn –
US
The human rights abuse record and
uncooperative attitude of the Federal Government
and its military authorities have been identified
as factors hindering United States of America
offering Nigeria effective security assistance.
Speaking on Thursday before the US House
Foreign Affairs Sub-committee on Africa’s
hearing entitled, ‘Human Rights Vetting: Nigeria
and Beyond’, the Specialist at African Affairs
Congressional Research Service, Lauren
Blanchard, said the Nigerian government and its
military had not been yielding to America’s
suggestions.
The Congress heard that the main impediment to
America’s efforts to support Nigeria’s broader
response to Boko Haram is “gross violations
committed by the Nigerian forces, the Nigerian
government’s resistance to adopting a more
comprehensive approach to Boko Haram, and the
continued lack of political will” within the
government to investigate allegations of human
rights abuses and hold perpetrators accountable.
Blanchard told the Congress, “The Nigerian
government also has appeared reticent in some
cases to allow its security forces to participate in
US training programmes. The State Department
indicates that there are currently 187 Nigerian
military units and 173 police units that have
been vetted and cleared to receive U.S.
assistance and training.
“It is unclear whether the Nigerian government
has given approval for such training to occur. A
2013 State Department audit report noted that,
in addition to human rights concerns, Nigeria’s
late submission of names of candidates for
assistance was a ‘recurring problem’ for the US
embassy.
“Multiple systemic factors further constrain the
effectiveness of the Nigerian security force’s
response to Boko Haram, notably security sector
corruption and mismanagement, and some of
these factors impede US support even for units
that have been cleared for assistance”.
Among the cleared units, she revealed, were
Nigeria’s Speed Boat Service commando and the
101st Infantry Battalion, which the ACRS
specialist said were best positioned to conduct
hostage rescue operations, but “both reportedly
require significant additional training”.
She added that the security relationship between
Nigeria and the US was hampered by the lack of
cooperation and systemic failure in Nigeria.
“The security relationship also has been
hampered at times by a lack of cooperation from
Nigerian officials and by systemic problems in
the Nigerian military. Political and human rights
concerns have been a prominent factor in
shaping US-Nigeria relations for decades.
“State Department human rights reports have
continued to highlight serious human rights
violations by the Nigerian security forces every
year. These violations include politically
motivated and extrajudicial killings, excessive
use of force, and torture,” Blanchard said at the
hearing.
Despite about N1trn ($5.8b) security budget, the
ACRS specialist said the “Nigerian troops are not
adequately resourced or equipped” to counter
Boko Haram insurgency. During the hearing, the
American disclosed that the troops were “slow to
adapt with new strategies, new doctrines and
new tactics,” and described Nigeria as “an
extremely challenging partner to work with.”

This story is quite incoherent. A while back we saw and heard the United States Secretary of Defence saying that the tactics the Boko Haram use is nearly quite alien to them. He motioned that while other extremist groups were using bank to bank transfers, phones and modern machines of warfare, the Boko Haram are using people to transfer their bulk monies, face to face for communication, cheap AK 47s and locally made bombs for warfare, hence, this has made it hard for them - the USA army - from intercepting the group's humane operation in Nigeria. Well, I think the USA army are doing their best, and would have done more if the political bottlenecks in this country won't stop giving them a hard time. Jonathan should SERIOUSLY do something about this fast. Me don't want this country to divide o.

It's what we Nigerians have known for a long time that our leaders are slowpokes who only care about themselves only and our boy scout soldiers are no match for even teenage cadets in the civilized world. All they know is to bully innocent civilians and burn buses that their father did not buy. But if they hear bokoharam they run away. Useless animals!

I understand your point but the Americans don't understand this country and how it works, mission specific to the insurgency. They think a group can organise another group more organised than them. Where do you see that happen. Do you know when the military is most effective is when the written constitution is suspended. Do you know that corruption the Americans talk about is a derivative of the constitution both written and unwritten. Do we know that the military is the last line of defence of this entity called Nigeria. We are watching while America attempts to reboot the only processor we have that operates our life support. To them we have other institutions to keep us alive. We Nigerians know we don't. We better be very careful here.

koboko69: It is quite unfortunate that some slowspokes still foolishly support this wicked and callous government. The Federal Government and the Top officers in the Nigerian military are the top beneficiaries amd aponsors of the BH menace. It is used as a political weapon and a means of self enrichment via the security budget and the likes. It is a pity that soldiers and young officers including innocent civilians have to pay daily with thier lives because of the greediness greed and quest of power amongst members of this government.

Very correct! Lack of knowledge will kill Nigerians.

Btw, it's greed and not greediness.

The Americans are only just knowing what Fela knew all a long-that our military are nothing but zombies. But when it comes to creative invoicing in equipment acquisition or skimming off pension allowances the Americans will be surprised at how little they know.

US is looking for a scapegoat for their inability to play James Bond after making so much noise on how they would help Nigeria rescue those girls. If I may ask, US didn't violate human rights in Iraq, Afghanistan in their campaign against terrorists? Now the going is becoming tough, somebody must be blamed.
