@ ALL

Thanks for all the congratulatory messages, ti yin na ade o.

I made a strange but yet to be confirmed discovery.
Anytime i walk or drive around my eyes are always fix at walls and roof tops trying to see who has what in terms of dish sizes and direction.
On one of my numerous observations i discovered a satellite facing an unfamiliar direction.
I intially thought it was for sirius but looking closely after many days i discovered it is not.
I did not count the information worthy of sharing until i saw another dish facing the same direction.
The really fascinating thing is that at the two locations that i have seen the dishes the cables run into a live football viewing center.
These are the descriptions
The dish is facing the west.
At both locations the dish size is 90cm.
The elevation of the dish is even higher than W3 & Sirius. it will be very close to zero as the dish is pointing directly at the sky
.
I am looking at lyngsat and some other resources online to identify the bird.

@ Enitan

You be yeye boy o
Why didn't you respond to my yahoo I'm messages.
Ok, i will change my user id to Becky or funmi and try again

@all

took the thing out of it's pack and check for newest update. one was just released today, i decided to upload and then test it with my nilesat installation.

the thing kept complaining of inability to communicate with the serial port, here i am guessing there's issue with my cable. so i just decided to test it without updating it yet and here are the results:

as you can see the decoder works. next step is to get a bigger dish too hunt down the show sports. and the rest of of channels that are elusive on 2.4

@ Olofofo, you are a true product of fta sat kolomentality lol. thats so wonderful of you,you rose up to that call,may you walk and never stumbles,may your next child never resembles your landlord. amen to all that. the pics you posted,i dont understand it,were those channels an encrypted ones and got opened by the decoder. if the decoder does, then it is high time a test is carried out with it on dstv,hitv,mytv. this is another call to answer, try test it with hitv and post yur findings whether successful or not on the forum. looking forward to reading your reply. @ bodejohn,i will get back to you on that findings of yours.

Bodejohn if its neither w3a nor sirus and the elevation is heigher than both virus and sirus with 90cm ,then we should work on it but first let me check if their is clue then i will climb my roof now .

all,with50cm dish you can pick signal from virus d sirus,because the satellite is beamed directly to Nigeria.Its where we have the highest dbw .

Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by Gangsta101(m): 11:13am On Dec 07, 2008
Hello Good People of Nairaland,

It's nice to finally be able to make a post after more than 3 weeks of being off d grid. Enitan and Enigma, thanks for inquiring about my well-being, I am quite alright, just that for the past few weeks I have been away and have had no access to the NET, but all is well.
In just 3 weeks, I see the thread has grown by more than 16 pages, that really is quite something, a this rate, we would need a third thread immediately after the Christmas break.
There's so much i'd like to say, but where do I begin? (let me first of all point out that I am typing this on my PDA, whose keypad has problems with the 'C' and'T' keys, so please forgive any typos I fail to correct along d way).
Now, there was a time, about 18mnths ago, u would have only 5 - 10 posts on this thread after 3 weeks, it does seem like we have a lot to discuss, but is u were to read every single page of those 16 belatedly (as I have had to do), 2 things would strike u;
1. There are certain Gems of extremely useful information on FTA in this region, these are usually preceded or followed by some equally informative questions/answers tha serve to improve the thread, but there is also a lot of what I would like to refer to as 'white noise', that is people posting absolutely mundane info that have absolutely nothing to with the General public, such as repeatedly carrying on personal conversations tht r best suited for phones, txt or IMs.
2. A lot of people are quoting other people's messages (not wrong in anyway), the problem is that a lot of messages being posted here are pretty long (such as this one), and it seems pretty unbelievable that someone wants to make reference to something I said on the 12th line, he has to copy the entire message back for me, maybe just to add a word or two afterwards.
All the above just serve to increase the number of pages unnecessarily, so one has to plod through a lot of gibberish to get to useful information. Please I know I am not in a position to tell anybody how to behave/post on a public forum, but if u guys would just take these tips (not directed to anyone in particular) it would help reduce the labour of catching up with what is going on, for people like me who will not be regular visitors for a while. For example, if you want to quote for a very long message, after hitting the 'insert Quote' link and it brings up the message, you could delete everyother line that has no bearing with what you want to discuss, and maybe put three dots to show it is from a longer message.

But enough of that, I guess I have really missed this forum, u get to find out after a while that you like hanging out here, I guess there's something addictive about carrying on intelligent conversations with total strangers you never get to see face to face, I must confess that when I had stable internet connection, my web explorer was constantly on this thread and set to refresh ever 5mins, so I could read every new post as they come in.
I see Adewest has finally made good on his claims (which sounded too good to be true when they were first made), I must say I marvel at ur ability to keep coming back even when u were greeted by so much derision and scorn, you must be one heck of a person in life (and pls don't say it comes from being an officer cos I know a lot of them and they r far from tolerant). I've always maintained that no one is under any obligation to post a message here, so if someone makes a claim, the least you can do is give them room for explanations. Personally, I just wish you had taken time out to explain yourself fully and saved us all a lot of bad blood, but like I said, thank God u kept coming back.

Anyways, i've got an appeal to make, for those who have the knowledge, could you please give me/us a detailed tutorials on CAMS, cards (gamma, abracadabra, e.t.c) and other conditional access systems, with respect to what they can do, how they are used and how to update them (For Educational purposes as always) or at least point us to where such topics are treated in details.
Another thing, I had always thought motorized systems were poor with signal localization, so they were not suitable for use with distant birds, but to my utmost surprise, Adewest is using one on a 1.8m dish to receive Nilesat and Hotbird, in Lagos of all places!!! I guess this means the end of VBUG (VERY Big Ugly Dishes) (and my dream of a 5.5m dish for hotbird, or maybe I still need one for SKY) and multiple big dishes.
Anyways, I'll try and keep coming back as often as I can, while I try and work out which town I am going to settle in.

@gangsta

long time. currently reading on your request regarding gamma and abracadabra ( i ust got one with echolink decoder) and definetely when i am ready to inform the house what i know you will be the first to know,, but i what i know soo far,

echolink decoder come with the abracadabra card and anytime an update is released for the firmware of the decoder, you can update your abracadabra card to decrypt some channels like that. am currently enjoying the showtime package at home here in lagos.

there are a number of support sites out there and i stumlbed upon one yesterday dedicated strictly to echolink decoders. the following packages are currently supported.

ART . SHOWTIME . TPS . CANAL+ . ORBIT .ABSAT . PREMIER . DIGI TV . AUTO

will keep updating you as the thing unravels

@captainus

Currently watching all of dem channels on showtime. tell me which one will you chose? abeg somebody come buy my notorized (kidding!)

all satellite work and no jokes will definitely make the thread boring. It is not only satellite hobbyst that frequent here, some like coming here just to see how we guys inter-relates just like we've all known one another for ages.
By the way how are you doing? we all miss you.
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by bodejohn(m): 2:42pm On Dec 07, 2008
@Enitan

I am still waiting for your explanation. The dish cannot be facing W3 or Sirius.
They are facing the WEST but W3 and Sirius is from the EAST.
It is just a pity that i cannot take a picture of the dish and post it.
I have both W3 and Sirius dishes at home and the dishes i am talking about is just about 3mins walk away from my house so i do not expect the change in direction and elevation that i saw on the dishes.
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by Nobody: 2:43pm On Dec 07, 2008
@ all,
some months back at the installation of ola's 2.4m fixed dish for nile, i said badaru made mention of a high possibility of getting nile with 1.8m dish. He mentioned that not all tps will come up but those that have an extra high signal on that 2.4m dish. He mentioned with extreme patience and good/quality lnb one would be successful at getting it.
So, it shouldnt be a suprise at all when someone come here and prove it pratically, badaru only gave his theories, and his theories if acts upon is highly practicable.
During the time we're doing some modifications with his 1.8m motorised yesterday, he also tried getting nile, and he saw an increase in signal quality, but since he used pas7/10 ku to do his alignment during his 1st installation, he wasnt successful at that. But if he had align it on the clarke belt using nile signal, it would have been superb.
If one is working with quality materials, it saves you a lot of stress and surely improves the signal you get.

The issue of getting hotbird in lagos with 1.8m is very much praticable, when you have the right lnb/dish. But the question you must ask yourself is, which tp of hotbird will the 1.8m be getting? Cos there're so many staellites on the position just like nile, are the stations under that hotbird tp you get with your 1.8m really worth the stress and resources you commit to the project. If we have a testing site where all these tests are carried out and results show, then each intrested individual would have known what he/she should be expecting.
No matter how good a person is and quality of materials used, there're still several limitations. Weather factor also play a major role in this, geographical location matters also. so guys, what might work for A, may not work for B even if they are in the same location. So, consider your location first before any other thing.

More tips are still coming.
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by Nobody: 2:52pm On Dec 07, 2008
@ bodejohn,
for a satellite to have a higher elevation that sirius that means, it will be in this range 3E-3W. But if you check on lngsat, there's no satellite in that area that can be received here in nigeria with 90cm dish.
Some months back, i posted a note on satellites in space, they are not that stationary, as the earth rotates so also they revolve round the earth. so the postion they are at a particular point in time differs to where they will be again at some other point in time, but only to a reasonable difference. So when it is mentioned satellite tracking, it means you are trying to get the signal from a satellite at some given point in time, the position A will track and get sirius at january might be different from when B do the same at december at the same exact location. geography students will be able to attest to this that even the position of the earth varies.
So also applies to satellites.

Am off to a meeting now, and i've another instance to make, but before i do that, i will need you to answer me this question, is the dish a strong dish, or a different brand? and how does the stand holding the dish looks like? is it fixed at angle 45 degree or it contains a bolt/nut for adjustments.
waiting for your answer.

BARKA DA SALLAH,
I spent 9hours on the road yesternight for a journey of 1Hr on the Lagos-Ibadan highway.did u experience it too?

enitan,
see ur life! we have hidden all their wives and daughters in the barrack preparing for ur visit.can i get a usb to rs232 cable at computer village?i just saw it online.my laptop and some new laptops do not support the common 9pin cable.my lappie has 12 pins.or can i get a 12 pin to 9 pin rs232 cable.can you swear that ur john thomas didnt respond after watching psat at badaru's end?yeye ashawo wetin yuo go find for religion section.who send you to announce that i am single,with all my 5wives is that single?please call me.

justx24,
don't waste ur cash.get adewest to get you over 100 free porn channels on hotbird 2.4m in Ibadan.How far with spying for us on the premiership guy in Ibadan?

all,
i am annoyed with all my colleagues who give the pay-tv providers the non-existent powers.please continue to send all infos except keys and patches.they can do little or nothing about infos.for the umpteenth time,i am telling u they shouild not be accorded too much power.RDV is out because of right issues and not our posts.A reliable source revealed they will be back as soon as they sort out licence issues with Senegalese version of NBC.
Adewest is a wizard.I drove him to my Abeokuta residence on Friday to check my system in preparation for the January upgrade.He picked easily on 3m fibre the Angolan tv and Malawi tv(south african beam ooo) that caused serious quarrrel some months back between bodejohn and enitan.Sincerely,this guy has been having a good laugh at us over the months over our know-it-all attitude.Sincerely,he knows so much that I am yet to tap a tenth of his knowledge inspite of the fact that we were together for 3days.we met ekoonibaje at LTV on Friday when we got back to Lagos.we were also expecting enitan but he didnt turn up.Adewest told me to condemn my 3m fibre and get the original 2.4m Eurostar pan from Bauchi.the makers and installers did a poor job of allignment.He is giving me a full turn-around,all equipment from bauchi to avoid faking at Alaba.the main problem we all have here with installers and suppliers is proper allignment.with a motorised 2.4m pan and digisat ku lnb,he believes we will pick all the weak birds in the south west.He is thinking of experimenting with astra and eurobird in Lagos.can you believe that he has an irdeto clone card that opens all irdeto signals including DSTV on pas10!He got it in Guinea,so don't ask him to get it for Uit is also expensive.I can go on and on.

gangsta,
i miss u die.you should be the first to pick eurolink/abracadabra.KD is just too fantasy=tic for the receiver.you no call me,na wa oooo.

Obnelly,
please get the abradabra card.what size of dish do you use for Nilesat,2.4m?do u pick showsports at all?I have already booked you for Adewest visit.please call him to arrange.I included you because I remenber your optimism some weeks back.thanks for the spirit.

baba egun,
thanks.

bodejohn,
congrats.but beware of some people here,they are grade one ashawos.i no mention names oooo.one is in Ipaja,another in Ibadan.

olofofo,
invite enitan to see the magic of nilesat.i hope Folo28 has gotten his own too.you will enjoy it better with showsports.can you input other frequencies and softcams that are not on abracadabra e.g. SABC,eTV.CAN IT TAKE OTHER PROVIDERS or is it exclusively for hotbird/nilesat?I will call you.

it is exactly information like the one above that we really need to be very careful with, you will agree with me that it will of benefit to more people when it is coded. let encourage the Group for such things. Abeg! mark my words, people will now want to call Adewest for the so called clone card for whatever price it will be going for.

George_D please I need  that satellite finder,I stay in warri and will call you on saturday.please try and talk to olofofo to make it two.

@Sayso,
olofofo has already gotten the sat finder. All he was waiting for was the digisat lnb to include in the package. Since he has not sent them yet, you can talk to him directly on the possibility of including yours with my package this week.
Where are you in Warri? Maybe we need to meet and discuss.
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 5:09pm On Dec 07, 2008
Guys,
The satellite finder is a good idea, but isn't there a better option. I have this one and it seams, it just beeps when u pass a satellite, but does not tell you which. Does anyone have any ideas on the specs of a better, more detailed one?  I would not mind getting one at all.
Thanks

Primate
@Primate,
A satellite finder is just an additional tool to ease installation of dishes. It basically eliminates the need to carry your TV up and down especially for installations done at the roof top or such other akward places. And for those recievers without a reliable signal meter, it becomes very essential.
While the digital ones might be better, you may still not find them of any use if you don't have a rough idea where to aim and for what bird (elevation & azimuth).
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 5:35pm On Dec 07, 2008
@all,
Enigma is totally correct on the HiTV Europe stuff. I personally came across it while browsing lyngsat a few days back but didn't really take note of it. When I went back to check, it was on Eurobird1, 28E (12643H, 27500). There is no secret to this info at all, else they wouldn't have placed it on a popular site like lyngsat.
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 5:48pm On Dec 07, 2008
the first one is SANTECH UNIVERSAL KU BAND LNBF (0.5DB NOISE FIGURE) costs between #2,500 to #3,500 here in abuja/suleja. this lnbf gives about 10% more signal strenght than most lnbf's if tweeked properly.

the second is STARGOLD UNIVERSAL KU BAND LNBF (0.3DB NOISE FIGURE) also costs about the same price as the one above. it gives about 8% additional signal.

@ George_D,

you can get any of the above lnbf in wuse zone 3 neighbourhood centre to solve your nilesat/ other ku band frequency problems. they are by far better than the premium 2 you mentioned in your post(s).
@AlcoveX,
I am interested in the stargold LNB but the price looks a bit high to me. If digisat KU will do about the same job at 1500, I think I will likely stick with that. Thanks for your suggestion all the same. Who knows? I might eventually give the stargold a try and if then I will be reaching out to you to help me get it-distance should not be a barrier. There are transporters plying warri and abuja everyday and people send stuff across frequently abi?
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by twinstaiye(m): 5:52pm On Dec 07, 2008
@ tox
We up north also need Ade west, and i for one is waiting patiently for him to return up north and see if he will be chance to visit Abuja.  I need to see if he can help me pick hotbird with 1.8M dish in Abuja while at the same time, I need to upgrade my nilesat from 1.8M dish to 2.4M dish in Abuja.
@olofofo
if that decoder can perform those magic on nilesat, i am also interested. what do I need to do to get myself one. Perhaps, I can be on your next list when next you decide to get another set of the decoder.
@Adewest
let us sat hobbiyist in abuja know when you are back up north, and see the possibility of visiting us in Abuja too. I am sure myself, baba-egun, maddoxj, alcovex etc will surely be glad you join us
@gangsta
welcome back, how was your journey, am sure you came back with lots of cash, credit my account with my own.
@all
got a problem to share with my satellite dish.  A neighbour of mine in the same compound was installing DSTV yesterday and as the installation was going on, I was watching Arsenal TV on MYTV.  My dish is mounted on the pole while his own dish is on top of the roof.  I discovered during his intallation that my MYTV channels are not working again. I did not raise alarm immediately thinking that it was a mere signal loss. It was when the installer left that I now went outside to see what is happening, and I discovered that even despite the distance between my dish on the ground and his own on the roof top, his 90cm dish is blocking the signal for 68.5 degree east.
The moral of my story is that, always be on your guard when there is another dish installation is going on especially within the same compound. Now the signal from mytv channels is too low that i cant watch my favourite Arsenal TV channel since yesterday.  As I am the landlord, I need to eject the guy immediately for committing satellite offence in my own compound grin grin

Enitan,

i totally agree, i'm just saying we should do the chatting in moderation, to reduce the space taken up.

Toxnaija,

i really wanted to call but u never sent ur no. please send yours and Adewest's to my mail and i'll definitely call as soon as i get it. meanwhile, i may be moving to Maiduguri soon, (thats where i am at the moment), i might be the one with the best access to Nilesat/Hotbird if that happens.

Olofofo,

alright. i'm keeping my fingers rossed, i cant browse properly or i would hae checked it myself, i also am not in a rush to buy another decoder cos that would be 3 in 3-4 months, so let me see if the cards/cams  are available first.

Enigma/Badaru/Adewest,

i would also love to hear from u guys on the card/cam stuff so i can decide which  one to get (though in the end, i guess it depends on what is available)

Oga moderator

Nothing gum me come bak oh, infact, i neva return yet, but i go keep in touch.

The dish is facing the west.
At both locations the dish size is 90cm.
The elevation of the dish is even higher than W3 & Sirius. it will be very close to zero as the dish is pointing directly at the sky.
I am looking at lyngsat and some other resources online to identify the bird.
@Bodejohn,
You should check the dishes properly. Depending on your position, some dishes may appear to be facing west while in reality they are facing east (this has happened to me on several occassions). Those dishes are definitely either sirius or w3a. I checked on dishpointer and they is no western bird with a KU footprint for 90cm (anywhere) with an elevation higher than 83-or as high as 90 which I'm sure you wanted to say and not zero.
Also, note that when pole mounted dishes are not plumb properly, they tend to either increase or decrease in actual elevation (depending on whether they are tilted forward or backwards) for the bird they are installed for.

@ Adewest, Olofofo, Jujukemist,

thanks for your responses/welcoming me to the forum, i ve tried out the digisat lnb after cutting @ the spot jujukemist said i should. i was able to get
cnn @ 48% on strong 4653x. but the picture was cracking, upon returning the santech lnbf and the cnn was 50% and steady picture. after this try out i belief the digisat lnb is a really good lnb because i know with a new dish and proper tweeking/dish alingment it would come out well. thanks to you guys and jujukemist is right that i would be interested in meeting Adewest anytime he is around abuja axis.

@  George D,

thanks for your interest, i have a stargold prime focus lnbf ive just gotten but am not using, i could send it to you to try out over there and report its perfomance back to the thread. if i could get santech too i would send for you to also try out. you dont have to pay me as i am interested in you guys solving this nilesat/other finge sattelite signal problem over there in the south of the country on 1.8mtr dish. just send me an e mail on how to mail it thru the transporters.

@ All,

i appreciate the melting pot of ideas on the thread. it is really wonderfull sharing ideas with guys you have not met nor spoken to before. lets keep it up. one tip i discovered over time is that the eurostar 1.8 mtr dish is better than strong 1.8mtr dish in terms of signal tracking. also i want oga adewest to confirm if he has used supermax 9200 decoder and how he rates it.

by the way i have the following decoders for tracking signals;  supermax, strong 4653x, 4663x, eurostar es-2 plus and mediacom mft930i.

@twinstaiye

Please holla me on olofofo@gmail.com for any info regarding the decoder, although i do not have the full showtime package becuase of dish size, i am currently watching Villa vs Everton on MAGHREB, if you have the full showtime packages, you really should not hesitate

@geeorge D

did you need to remove the plastic around the LNB itself or just cut off the covering? am planning on tracking with it tommorow.
