While Dawson was indeed an irishman, he was a carpenter, not a painter as depicted in the movie, and he had no romantic affiliation on the ship. His girlfriend was Nellie Priest who was thousands of miles away in a small town somewhere in the UK.

So, apparently the whole love scene was a fiction right?
