Nigeria: Will Kelechi Iheanacho follow John Obi Mikel's road to mediocrity?

John Obi Mikel & Kelechi Iheanacho.
The Manchester City youngster's time may have finally come, but if he makes it in the Premier League, Nigeria may be worse off in the long run
COMMENT BySolace Chukwu Follow on Twitter
Sunday’s Community Shield was a light aperitif; dispensed with, focus inevitably turns to the Premier League season in store, and the narratives set to be explored and unfurled in the current weeks and months. One of the chief questions, from the standpoint of the Super Eagles, is in what capacity the lavish talents of Kelechi Iheanachoare to be utilized.
For the second preseason in a row, the youngster has put hardly a foot wrong.
The caveat last time around was Manchester City’s inability to snag him a work permit, an inconvenience that has now been corrected. With Stevan Jovetic off to Inter, and a move to Roma seemingly inevitable for Edin Dzeko, Iheanacho may very well be third in the Citizens’ striking pecking order going into the season.
Consider also that Sergio Aguero’s blitzes of brilliance are invariably punctuated by multiple injuries within the season, and Wilfried Bony is still finding his feet at the Etihad. At some point, Iheanacho will surely get a chance to show what he’s got.
This can only be good for the player’s development. The dicier subplot to resolve is whether it is in the interest of the national team.

Is Iheanacho set for a breakout campaign at Manchester City?
On the surface, it is a ridiculous concern—the Super Eagles can only benefit from having the prodigious 18-year-old playing regularly in the biggest league in the world. However, his appearances will continue a trend that, if unchecked, will complete a position-change from creative wide man to central striker.
While he scored six times for the Golden Eaglets side in 2013 as they triumphed at the Fifa U-17 World Cup in UAE, it was clear that his goals were not the main attraction. Indeed, four of that tally came in one game: a freakish 6-1 demolition of Mexico; he scored only twice more in the remaining six games, and one of those in the final. Instead, what stood out was his unique vision and creativity.
Employed as one of two playmakers behind first Success Isaac, then Taiwo Awoniyi in a 4-3-2-1/4-3-3 hybrid, Iheanacho thrived when drifting centrally between opposition lines of defence and midfield. His initial wide position often made him difficult to track, and from this zone he wreaked absolute mayhem. He completed the tournament with seven assists, none more beautiful – or totemic – than his slide rule pass for Awoniyi’s opener in the quarter-final against Uruguay.
His lock-picking abilities fuelled a sense of excitement about his arrival; Nigeria has struggled for overt creativity since the declines of Kanu and, to an extent, Jay-Jay Okocha—players who, in their right, were the final hold-overs of the national team’s golden era in the mid-to-late 90s.
However, since joining City, he has featured mostly as a pure centre-forward. In a way, you could lay it at the door of the broad spectrum of attributes he possesses: he is a very composed finisher and, standing at over 6ft, is no soft touch. His goals for Manuel Pellegrini’s side also suggest he is doing well enough in the role, and he continues to provide assists, as Raheem Sterling can attest.
However, the Chilean’s imagining of the player could, in the long run, be detrimental to the Super Eagles. Nigeria is not short on young strikers with great potential (Imoh Ezekiel, Michael Olaitan, the aforementionaed Awoniyi and Isaac, to name very few), what it does lack is competent playmakers.
Iheanacho could become the player City want, but not the one that Nigeria needs.
If this story arc tugs at the fringes of memory, that is because there is recent form for the national team being deprived of a great talent through a change in role.

Nigeria: Will Kelechi Iheanacho follow John Obi Mikel's road to mediocrity?

Can Mikel ever truly say that he has made the most of his immense talent?
John Obi Mikel, himself a prodigy with the world at his feet, made a move to nouveau-riche Chelsea to much acclaim. What Nigeria got back was half the player, generously watered-down and disinclined to produce the sort of sublime, effortless brilliance that had seen him share a podium with Lionel Messi.
The Super Eagles persisted in fielding Mikel in the role: surely there was something left, the embers could still be coaxed into, if not a raging blaze, at least a flickering candle. The experiment failed calamitously, leading Samson Siasia, under whom Mikel had blossomed in the beginning, to lament, “Chelsea destroyed the player Mikel once was!”
Pulling in two completely different directions is an entirely apt illustration—by the analogy, the club role exerts greater stress, as international breaks are intermittent. In the end, the limit of elasticity entailed Nigeria had to accept Mikel for what he had become, rather than what had been expected.
At some point in the near future, when his evolution is complete, Nigeria will have to accept the Iheanacho that has been sculpted at Manchester City. That is not necessarily a bad thing: Robin van Persie underwent a somewhat similar transmutation into a fearsome centre-forward and, in the process, has become the top scorer in the history of the Dutch national team. Still, whatever heights the teenager hits as a striker, there will always be the sense that a great opportunity has been lost
Feelers around new boss Sunday Oliseh indicate that Kelechi Iheanacho will be a key component of the new Super Eagles. The question once again is - what version will he be hoping to get, and will he be prepared for the inevitable disappointment?
For that matter, will the entire nation be?

Nigeria: Why I Didn't Reply My Critics - Manu

By David Ngobua
Coach Manu Garba has said he did not reply those who criticised the Flying Eagles after they were eliminated from the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand because even prophets sent by God to guide people on the right track were criticised.
In a chat with Daily Trust yesterday, the coach said although he was blamed by some Nigerians over the team's performance, he was not disturbed because most Nigerians appreciated what the team achieved under him.
He said it is it only almighty God that decides the outcome of every human endeavour so those who vehemently criticised him and his boys should have shown more understanding in their criticisms.
Manu said "Almighty God decides the outcome of everything and my destiny has always been good.
"If the prophets sent by Almighty God to guide people on the right track were criticized in their areas, who am I not to be criticised."

According to Peters, the Dream Team VI players under the tutelage of Siasia have shown that they are a squad with a mission, adding that they can only get better with every game they play.
“With the manner they have been improvIng with every game in both the Olympic and AAG qualifiers, I see them as possible winners of both U-23 championship in Senegal and the Congo All Africa Games if they continue to improve, Peters told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.
“I think Siasia deserves to get the thumbs up for building a squad that will ultimately become the future Super Eagles. He has done a wonderful job and he should be encouraged to do more. Watching that team play gives me hope and the believe that the future is bright for our football.”
The former assistant General Secretary Technical with the Nigeria Football Federation, stressed that Siasia should get to work immediately by getting dossiers of all the teams that qualified for the AAG and the CAF U-23 championship.
He also called on the NFF to assist Siasia by providing him video clips of all the teams in both competitions and ensuring that he gets all the support for his programme, noting that it will not augur well if they don’t get all their demands to meet their targets.

Siasia to hunt for players

The Chief Coach of Dream Team VI, Samson Siasia has promised to boost the team with better players if found to solidify the team ahead of tougher tasks before the team.
Siasia disclosed this to SportingLife yesterday in Abuja while x-raying the matches played so far by his team to get to the final qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympics Football Tournament.
“The team is a work in progress so we can bring in players if they are better than what we have now. We are not doing friendship in this job. We want the best leg to come and play for Nigeria and at the end of the day to graduate to Super Eagles players. It is not a friendship team. If we find better players that are good enough of course we want to include them to make our team a stronger team”, Siasia explained.
The former Super Eagles’ Chief Coach also vowed to do everything possible to win this year’s All Africa Games despite campaigning in Group B comprising strong African teams like Ghana, Egypt and Ghana. He wants to win it to prepare the team for the 2016 Olympics qualifying tournament tagged Africa U- 23 Championship.
“It is a challenge and a target for us because why are we going if we don’t want to win it? We want to go there and do our best to make sure we win the Championship. That will help the team and solidify it for the other challenges ahead. We have qualified and we must try and see how we can win it.
“There won’t be better preparations than that because it would be very tough out there. I think it is a good one for us preparing for the Olympics’ proper qualification. I think it is going to help our team more because if you play more games it would improve the team. The more games you play among yourselves I think that will help the team to become a better team.

Man City Confirm Iheanacho Promotion To First Team

By Johnny Edward:
Manchester City have confirmed that Kelechi Iheanacho has been promoted to the first team for the 2015/2016 season.
The Nigerian forward featured in five pre-season games, scoring twice and was heavily tipped to be included in the senior squad following his sparkling form.
It was then confirmed on Wednesday night when he was presented alongside two other academy graduates Jason Denayer and Marcos Lopes to the club’s fans during City’s annual award ceremony that usually precedes the season opener.
“@Jasondenayer, @Rony10Lopes & @67Kelechi are the three academy graduates promoted to the first team,” the club’s official Twitter handle confirmed.

Iheanacho is expected to play a part in Monday night’s away clash against West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Also at the awards night, Toni Duggan emerged winner of the Nissan Goal of the Season Award for her stunning strike against Chelsea.
While Sergio Aguero won the Etihad Airways Player of the Season award.

Don’t overlook Iheanacho, Awoniyi, Fetuga tells Oliseh

Kelechi Iheanacho
By Kazeem Busari
Former international Olusegun Fetuga has advised Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh not to overlook the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi in his new-look Super Eagles as the coach makes effort to strengthen the team.
Oliseh is expected to name a preliminary squad when he returns to Nigeria next week ahead of their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in September.
While Oliseh is focussed on inviting only experienced players to the team, Fetuga believes key players in the Flying Eagles squad, which won the 2015 African Youth Championship and featured in the U-20 World Cup, are good enough for the senior team.
“Oliseh is professional enough to select his team without sentiment. I support his stand to invite only players with adequate experience; this is not the time to involve players who are benchwarmers at the clubs,” Fetuga said.
“While I oppose the idea of involving all the players from the Flying Eagles in the Super Eagles programmes, I believe outstanding players like Iheanacho and Awoniyi have proven themselves worthy of being in the senior team.
“Iheanacho has been in the limelight for Manchester City throughout their pre-season activities. Any wise coach will know that this is the best time to get the player committed to his team. Awoniyi was also active for the national U-23 team despite not having a topflight club to play for.”
Fetuga said Oliseh’s rebuilding method should not be seen as a means of disintegrating the team following the sacking of Stephen Keshi as coach of the Super Eagles.
“Many people agreed that some players didn’t have the quality required to be in the Eagles before Oliseh came. The team should not be used for experiments to determine the level of intelligence of some players. It should be for professionals only,” Fetuga said.
“If Oliseh decides to invite only the best players from home and abroad, he should be supported. No sentiment should be attached. I don’t think his method will destabilise the team in any way. Only the best players will be retained in the team.”

Esperance explain why Sokari transfer crashed

Tunisia giants Esperance have said they pulled out of a move for Nigeria midfielder Kingsley Sokari because they have more than enough foreign players and their new coach did not want any more signings.
The Enyimba midfielder was in Tunis to negotiate a deal and probably do the medical upon agreed of term but the reverse is the case as he returned to Nigeria.
Enyimba said they put the plug on the transfer after Esperance failed to come up with the transfer fee agreed between the two clubs.
Esperance claimed the transfer of the player was dropped by the club due to large number of foreigners in the team and the coach Jose Anigo did not more signings.
"Esperance Sportive de Tunis manager waived the recruitment of Nigerian Kingsley Sokari after consultation with the coach Jose Anigo,” explained the club.
“Indeed, given the number of foreigners already present, our club would rather enlist a foreign player more in line with the needs of the team."
Nigeria stars Emem Eduok and Bernard Bulbwa are already with Esperance.

All Africa Games: I’m going for gold in Congo-Siasia

From ROMANUS UGWU, Abuja
BASKING from the euphoria of ending the dream of his Congolese counterpart in the Olympic Games qualifiers, chief coach of the national U-23 team, Samson Siasia, has expressed confidence of his team winning gold medal in the Brazzaville, Congo 2015 All Africa Games (AAg).
While declaring that winning the football gold of the Games will not be a challenge to him in a chat with sports writers, SiaOne maintained that such feat would add to his ratings and achievement as a coach, stressing that it is not a mission impossible.
Siasia who described his teams impressive display in Congo last weekend as a very daunting task, used the opportunity to shower encomium on his players for making him proud, revealing that participating in the AAG would help prepare his players for the last lap of the qualifiers for the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Senegal.
Disclosing that his team will reconvene next week Tuesday to resume preparations for AAG, World Cup Coach as friends fondly call him assured that his team will strive to win football gold despite belonging to a tough group comprising countries like Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.
He equally disclosed that the technical crew would continue to give opportunity to more players who are good enough to make the team stronger, admitting: “It was a very difficult one in Congo but we had our plans. Things did not just happen like that, we planned for it and it worked for us.” “You know they came with some new professional players, but we were not worried with that because we were focused on our plans of ensuring that they did not score us. I told my players to be very careful because it would have been more difficult if they had scored us towards the end of the game. We would have been out completely.
“There would not be a better preparation for Senegal like the All Africa Games. I think it is a good one for us before we go for the last lap of the Olympics qualifier. It will definitely help us to prepare for Senegal. For me, I do not see winning the All Africa Games as a challenge, but as a goal which will add to my achievements.

Y all the attention only on Iheanacho and Awoniyi. Isaac Success to me is ahead of them both. Success is already ripe for d Super Eagles while Iheanacho and Awoniyi may need to put finishing touched to their game levels. The last U20 WC proved that Success is more clinical than Awoniyi + Success is in his second la liga season while Awoniyi is waiting till his 18th birthday to put pen on paper for Swedish club.

I dnt know y Success is nt getting d enough publicity he deserves. Siasia has never even considered him for his team.

For Yahaya i think what might b affecting him is same thing affecting Awoniyi.Age: nt yet 18 so no professional contract yet.

Wenger: Hull Loan Move Good For Akpom

By James Agberebi:
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, believes that Chuba Akpom’s loan move to Championship side, Hull City, will aide his football development.
Akpom and Isaac Hayden both signed for Hull City on loan as they seek to gain further first-team experience this season.
“There is a moment in your career where you are not anymore for youth level and not ready for the Premier League,” the manager told Arsenal Player.
“I think in this period in English football, we lose players, because we have nothing really on the competition front to offer them. They’ve already played for two or three years in the under-21s and they don’t feel they move forward anymore if they don’t play in the first team.
“They are ready to play in a senior team and I believe that Championship level is a very good terminal stage of the education of a player.
“Unfortunately we cannot do it for everybody because not everybody can play in the Championship. I think it’s a great experience at the end of the education of a player, before he plays in the Premier League and for Arsenal.”
In the Barclays Asia Trophy, Akpom scored a hat-trick in Arsenal’s 4-0 win against Singapore XI.

Oliseh mum over Iheanacho’s senior Nigeria chance

The Super Eagles coach has not made a definite decision on calling up the Manchester City youngster for next month’s Afcon qualifier against Tanzania
Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has told Goal that there will be a few surprises when his list of foreign-based professionals to tackle Tanzania next month is released in coming weeks.
While reassuring that standard won't be compromised, he also revealed how difficult it was for him pruning down the names of short listed foreign-based players from 72 to 23.
The coach, who expects stiff competition when camping kicks off in Abuja in a fortnight, refused to confirm or deny if Manchester City's youngster Kelechi Iheanacho will be considered in his ‘surprise list’.
Iheanacho has been in blistering form for the Citizens in pre-season, scoring twice in five appearances.
The former Flying Eagles attacking midfielder has also been promoted to the first team squad for the coming Premier League season.
"I don't know and if I do, I won't share with you," Oliseh toldGoal. “But there will be lots of surprises in the squad for the Euro-based players. We have a target which is to win in Dar es Salaam,” he added.
The former national team skipper handed fresh call-ups to seven new players for the upcoming away fixture against Tanzania, overlooking notable names such as Azubuike Egwuekwe, Rabiu Ali, Daniel Akpeyi and a host of others in his new look home-based Super Eagles squad.
Oliseh also revealed that his meeting with Liverpool winger Jordan Ibe, was fruitful but was quick to add that nothing is guaranteed at least for now confirming Goal’s earlier report regarding the availability of the Liverpool winger for Nigeria this year.
"We still have to make him see why Nigeria is a better option for him. Talks are still on as regards that."

Atletico Madrid, Getafe Chase Awoniyi

By Izuchukwu Okosi:
Taiwo Awoniyi could be set to ply his trade in the Spanish La Liga following enquiries from two Spanish clubs, Atletico Madrid and Getafe.
But the U-23 Eagles star insists he will only go for a club willing to give him playing time.
Comple tesportsnigeria.com has exclusively scooped that Atleico, who won the league title in 2013/2014, and mid-table Getafe have expressed interest in the services of the forward.
Awoniyi reportedly has a pre-contract arrangement with Swedish side KK Kalmar but that has not dissuaded clubs from expressing interest in him.
Comple tesportsnigeria.com’s source who scouts for an agency based in Greece confirmed the readiness of the clubs to sign Awoniyi.
“There is interest in Taiwo Awoniyi in Spain but we need to get the permission of those managing his interests,” the source told comple tesportsnigeria.com.
“These are big clubs, one of them are really one of the biggest Spanish clubs while the other are not so big, plus yet another in England,” Ifeanyi Igwemjoku, who worked in brokering a deal for Taye Taiwo in Turkey which the former Eagles left back rebuffed due to the club being a second division side, told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.
Awoniyi himself told Completesportsnigeria exclusively: “My interest is to play regular football. Money is good but if I don’t get playing time now, that could be counter productive.
“I am pleased that offers are coming my way but I will not be in a hurry, God will direct me.”
Liverpool and Porto are also credited with an interest in Awoniyi.

At this rate, at a point in time, every team in Europe would have shown interest in Awoniyi. His mates are getting ready for the start of the season and his agent is still playing kalo kalo with this boy's career. This talent must not go to waste o.

I know u will like this News. I too think Atletico will be good for him. He may b put in their youth team till he is matured for senior action.
However if he signs for a team like getafe he stands a better chance of being quickly promoted to d senior team bt may nt get enough playing time jst like what is happening to Success at Granada.

Why choose Atletico Madrid instead of Getafe where playing time might be easier to get? I know that anybody would love to choose AM FC over Getafe FC, but he might struggle to break into the first team of AM FC than Getafe FC.

Bros Awoniyi will hardly get playing time in Getafe's senior team. The best thing for him is to pass through d Atletico Youth team. Gain some playing time there & compete with boys of his age den after a year or so gain promotion to d Atletico A team. And if dey deem it fit loan him to another club in Spain or any other part of Europe where he can gain playing time competing at senior club level.

we don't want hoarding clubs. Make dem no hold my baby's destiny as Granada dey hold Isaac own.

Atletico seems more flexible and if he's really good, he can be promoted to their senior team. He will get more exposure in the youth team of Atletico than in Getafe first team grin
