That is the reason Nigeria is going to be at the barrel of the bottom in the community of nations . He never said anything about the govt closing down his forum. If that is the case, tens of publications would be shut down in Nigeria. You deserve the cesspool of mismanagement and corruption you get as a country. Perpetual third world going no where brighter.

I wonder why he should allow himself to be pressurized. If he feels his blog is facing any threat from the government, he should take legal action, making them realize forumites are answerable to any comment they make.

@ barcanista

Why are you seething with anger over this issue.Your lord and master Buhari
Promulgated a decree during his days that made it a crime to insult govt officials or have you forgotten?

you didn't see nothing wrong with Buhari's decree but you see everything wrong with seun's
version.
You are very pathetic. 2Face

Nigerians use this forum to speak against bad govt. If I were a govt official, I would visit this forum regularly to know how Nigerians feel abt me. Criticisms are meant to help you wax stronger. Criticising these politicians can help them serve us better in a long way. Banning these criticism would do the nation more harm than good and it would make nairaland less interesting. I suggest you advice nairalanders on how to interact with one another but don't ban any criticism against any govt official for the interest of Nigeria. This is ur own little contribution to fatherland. Be brave. Don't be intimidated and stand for what you believe... cheers

The fact that Seun has to consider this is testament to the state of Nigeria and what the future portends. It is an objectionable course but Seun bears the commercial risk if this site is shut down not most users. It is easy to hyperventillate about Seun kowtowing to the powers that be whilst hiding behind the anonymity that the internet affords.

I must say I am enjoying the supreme irony of ardent Buhari supporters - I am referring to you Barcanista - fuming with righteous indignation at the prospect of such "violations" of basic human rights as are being proposed. You would think that people who purport to hold freedom of expression sacred would make strange bedfellows with Buhari

If you do that, at some point, it's going to be tough to draw the line over what constitutes an insult. I think all you need is a good disclaimer and an advice to people to use tolerable language.

Seun:
Hello,

I'm working on a modification to our rules that will make it an offence to disrespect government officials and call them derogatory names on Nairaland. The objective is to prepare Nairaland for a time when the Nigerian Government may not be able to tolerate such things. Currently it's against our rules to deliberately insult a Nairaland member, so we will just be extending this rule to make it cover government officials too.

What are your comments on this? I promise to read all your comments, though I can't promise to reply all of them, of course.

Thanks!

Dear Seun Osewa,

Firstly, I commend your humility to request the inputs of Nairalanders before making a decision on this, and I believe the decision should be based on what is right but not what is popular.

Freedom of Speech:
Many people, especially the divide that knows nothing about debates without fallacies, name-calling and abuses are going to cite Freedom of Speech as the reason to continue their madness and mayhem, but be guided by the fact that Freedom is not Liberty, Freedom has boundaries and limitations. No one is at Liberty to insult the public figures but one has freedom to air his views without abuses.

American Paradigm:
There are also those who believe that if Obama can be insulted by Americans, then our politicians should be insulted too; Seun, Ignore them, because I believe not in the mantra that everything American is perfect, Our cultures and tradition of respect is being eroded by blind followership of Americanized tenets. Seun set a standard and lets match into 2015 election with constructive debates.

Seun, No one has to threaten you to know what is right, No one even has the right to force you to be anti or pro government, this is your creation, but not without the people, because it is the people's forum.

Seun, except you set this clean wordings standards, Nairaland will continue to be shunned by the upper echelon, the educale, the lettered and the no-nonsense personalities.

I support the idea of free but clean speech, so I support Seun advocation to ban those who insult government officials be it Fashola, Rochas, President Jonathan or my pompous self.

So mote it be.

Mr. Seun you are a pitiable person. I expect that you would have done some sober reflection by this time. Is it because we call Jonathan Mr. Clueless and the PDP a Killer Party that you want to Gag our views? Do not use your own hand to ruin your forum-It is just a brotherly and friendly advise.

RUBBISSSSSSHHHHHH

PS: This is in contravention to the African Charter on Human Right which deals with FREEDOM OF SPEECH and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Yeah ,it's ok for u to preach freedom of speech and bring up some obsolete African charter that no-one adheres to but u'll not hesitate to come on here and shout 'death to d gays'!

Read my signature as that might just be speaking to you and ur ilk directly!

As for Seun and his topic at hand,he's already done worse before ,his site ,his problems .he might as well continue driving in d nails to the coffin!

Re: Making It An Offence To Insult Government Officials by Nobody: 5:25pm On Oct 21, 2014
It is very funny that you want to sensor insults, yet allow topics like "nolly wood big booties", "video of teacher having sex with students". In summary, Nairaland is becoming so pornographic and vulgar, you should worry about that, not government of officials that continue to remain clueless in handing the affairs of this great country. I am completely appalled, that you would even consider this. We are not under military rule, anyone should have the freedom to call any government official an "assshole" if that person is one. No politician can do anything to Nairaland, do not be scared, do not destroy your business for politicians that care less about you!

It depends on what you mean by insult. If I call somebody who is a Crook a Crook, to me that is no insult.
Meanwhile, Somebody has just floated an airline just months after leaving office, little wonder he was fighting tooth and nail to become minister for aviation. How do you expect us to refrain from speaking out about the massive looting?
Just have your disclaimer. Nigeria must be better, mediums like this helps in exposing and pruning the excesses of these insatiably corrupt officials

I wonder when a CEO have started to bow to pressure from government officials. The beauty of democracy is freedom of expression, and once that is gone there's nothing like democracy. If the people of America can insult the president using different media and those media have not been closed down, then why should seun feels he can take our right away especially on the politics section. Therefore Seun take a rethink on your action, and stop whatever you think of doing.
