A London-based nurse has been jailed for trafficking Nigerian women into Germany to work as prostitutes after subjecting them to "voodoo" rituals.

Josephine Iyamu forced the five women to swear oaths to hand over money to her during "juju" ceremonies.

Iyamu, 51, formerly of Bermondsey, was convicted of arranging or facilitating travel for sexual exploitation and perverting the course of justice.

She was jailed for 14 years at Birmingham crown Court.

Iyamu became the first British national prosecuted for Modern Slavery Act offences after trafficking victims outside the UK.

The court heard the women were forced to eat chicken hearts, drink blood containing worms, and have powder rubbed into cuts during the rituals.

Sentencing, Judge Richard Bond said the 51-year-old had shown "a complete disregard for the welfare of these women".

He said she had exposed them to a "real and significant" risk of death as they travelled across the Mediterranean on inflatable boats.

"You saw them not as living, breathing human beings but as commodities to earn you large sums of money," he added.

British born Ghanaian, Idris Elba is best known for his television and film roles, but for over a decade the British actor has also been casually making moves in hip-hop and dance music on the mic and behind the decks. And now he’s adding record label boss to his growing resume.



On Tuesday (July 3), Elba announced the launch of his new record label called 7Wallace Music and his first signing, James BKS.

James is a French artist whose family is from Cameroon with a background as a hip-hop producer working with Diddy, Talib Kweli and others in the States. He now resides in Paris and runs the creative house Grown Kid, which has composed music for Yves Saint-Laurent, Prada and Giorgio Armani commercials and scored French films including La Taularde and Le Gang Des Antillais. Along the way, James developed a connection with his Cameroonian heritage after a chance meeting with his biological father, legendary Afro-jazz saxophonist Manu Dibango, led to a collaboration and a newfound appreciation for African music.

The Nigeria Customs Service has confiscated vehicles carrying bags of foreign rice along Kaduna, Zaria and Kano.
According to a NAN report, the assistant comptroller and commander, strike force of the command, Ekanem Wills, confirmed this on Monday while speaking to journalists in Kaduna about the smuggled rice.
“We were able to confiscate eight Golf wagons and three J5 vehicles conveying smuggled rice,” he said.
Mr. Wills further explained that each vehicle had about 40 to 45 bags of rice. He said while further investigations are ongoing, culprits have been apprehended.
He said government has provided the command with new vehicles for patrol, to enhance the capacity of the personnel in the efforts to end smuggling. He assured that the command was determined to seize all goods being smuggled into the country through its area of operation. He warned smugglers to find new legitimate means of livelihood.
This incident is coming weeks after the federal government says it will shut down the border between Nigeria and neighbouring countries to avoid smuggling of foreign rice into the country.
The minister of agriculture and rural development, Audu Ogbeh, made the disclosure while speaking to youth in a leadership clinic organised by Guardians of the Nation International (GOTNI).
While Mr Ogbeh did not mention specifically which borders will be closed, he did emphasise the necessity to encourage local production and to sustain the economy of the country as the reason for this closure.
This instance is not the first time the Minister of Agriculture has threatened to shut down the border to discourage smuggling and encourage local production. According to another report by NAN in May 2017, he made a similar statement while speaking to journalists about the achievements of the federal government in the agriculture sector since 2015.
Mr Ogbeh in his statements to the press said the decision had become necessary to encourage local rice farmers and to enable the country achieve self-sufficiency in rice by 2018.
“We believe they are determined to sabotage the efforts that we are making to guarantee self-sufficiency in rice and to save foreign exchange which we don’t have, they insist on bringing in rice through the land borders, avoiding the duties and the levies we put on them and they are definitely bent on sabotaging our efforts and we are getting increasingly unhappy with them. And I must say that very soon, if they persist, we will take very nasty measures against them”.
The federal government has severally lauded its efforts in increasing local production of rice since it came into office since 2015 and has set a 2020 goal for Nigeria hitting self-sufficiency in rice production.

Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will later today [Tuesday], meet the US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson, and other officials of the Embassy over the impending deportation of some 7,000 Ghanaians which will happen today


In an interview with Gold News, he said the Ghanaian government must be certain that the deportees are truly Ghanaians before accepting them into the country.

The meeting is aimed at finding a solution to the ensuing impasse between the US and the Ghana government over the issuance of travel documents for some 7000 illegal migrants in the US.

The US government wants travel documents from the Ghanaian government to deport the Ghanaians, but a delay in the process is creating tension between the two countries.

Some have accused the US of trying to bully Ghana by the threat, but according to Ambassador Robert Jackson, the US has fairly engaged Ghana on the matter.

“It is unfortunate that almost 7,000 Ghanaians are facing deportation from the US because they have overstayed their visas or broken US law. We have been working with the government of Ghana my entire time here to repatriate people in the most humane way possible…. I’ve been talking with the government of Ghana about this for over two years. This is not [a] hasty [decision]. I talked to Members of Parliament. I talked to people in in the old government; I talk to people in the current governments. I am acting on instructions. This is not something I am initiating. We will enforce our immigration laws and i have no power to ammend it,” he said.

The Embassy further threatened to impose VISA restrictions on Ghana if it fails to quicken the pace of the process.

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Bola Tinubu has reportedly accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of plotting to loot the country’s treasury for 60 years.

The Punch reports that the former Lagos state governor’s allegation was contained in a goodwill message released on Saturday, June 23 after the party’s convention.
Tinubu said many people were against the formation of the APC and did all they could to stop the merger.

He alleged that the doubters forged different tactics to prevent the APC’s formation.

He said: “The doubters who gave APC no chance of existence or of continued survival have gotten their reply in full. Their envious prayers and complaints have been answered in reverse.

“They wanted to see the end of us and our pursuit of good governance for Nigeria. You should not forget, as I shall never forget, the strong efforts they made to stop us in the courts.

“There were twelve cases brought trying to stop us from merging, from registering the new party, then attempting to bar our candidate from the election.

“Lacking the courage to face the democratic will of the people, they tried to misuse the courts as a weapon against democracy.

“We thank the judiciary for following the letter and spirit of the constitution by dismissing this dirty dozen of malicious cases filed against us.

“With their schemes foiled, those who tried to destroy us must bear witness to the destruction of their edifice of corrupt governance and their dreams of unjust domination of our nation.

“While they planned a lifetime of greedy enrichment by looting the people’s resources and the public treasury for 60 years, we moved to reform the economy to bring development and aid to the poor. ”

“When they hoisted the standard of bias, we raised the flag of justice and the chevron of fairness.”

Meanwhile, Tinubu pledged his support for President Muhammadu Buhari's second term bid, saying that the president deserved a second term in office.
Tinubu, who made the comments in Abuja on Tuesday, June 12, at the investiture of Moshood Abiola in Abuja, said that he would work for Buhari's victory in the 2019 presidential election, Punch reports.

NAIJ.com notes that Tinubu claimed that Nigerians are no longer paying for darkness, giving an indication that electricity supply has become stable under the administration of Buhari.

The PM is four days past her due date, which was June 17.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters was now acting prime minister and would run the country for the next six weeks while Ardern took maternity leave, the statement said.Ms Ardern, 37, took office as New Zealand’s third female prime minister last year and announced in January that she was expecting a baby with her partner, TV fishing show presenter Clarke Gayford.

Ms Ardern, the leader of the New Zealand Labour Party, is the world’s youngest female head of government. She will also be the first to take maternity leave once her baby is born.
