sometimes it depends on the teaching at sch, and your imput at home, 20-30min is ok at home to patiently put them thru, start with tracing severally. mine can write 1-10, A to k, one, two, three.

Get colourful things to assist. u can write them with cloured pencils

Dear Mother, I am going to speak from an educational psychologist point of view. In child development, there are several factors that affect learning. Maturation is very key. some activities of a child like walking, crawling and speaking depend on the development of the innate potentialities of the child. Frankly speaking, it your child is not ready to learn letters and numbers, he won't learn. That does not mean you should get discouraged. At this stage, children learn by association. If u can get sing-along videos that teach numbers and identification of alphabets, that would be good. You could also get charts and pointers for your child and ask him to teach you. Don't rush him. If he feels rushed, he won't learn. Motivate him when he gets any right. Say "good job!" or ask him to clap for himself. Its almost impossible but I'm going to ask you not to compare your child with any other child.

How many of those telling you to force your child are experts? As a trained teacher and an educational psychologist, I strongly advise that you have patience. kids grow differently. On the second issue of distraction, take that seriously, it could be ADHD. ADHD is my thesis at Masters. So if you don't mind, I can send you an ADHD assessment scale. Give it to the teacher to fill it and score. That's when you can know his problem. All the best.
Thank u so much for ur time sir, that's why I brought the issue to a public forum so I cld tap frm pple's wealth of experience esp frm trained teachers and psychologists which u happen to be among. Pls I'm interested in d assessment scale cos I got to knw about ADHD thru google wen my son's issue became a concern to me. Thanks in anticipation of quick response.

Thanks a lot. His teacher has already been briefed about my son's challenges, she promised to pay more attention to him, and she's doing dt. I'm also helping him at home. His hands are now firm on pencil and paper, unlike before, he remembers how to write a letter or alphabet wen he sees it but can't identify which letter it is.

ok great! make dotted tracings of few letters, numbers. u can do 5-10 each and encourage him to bolden them by himself , his grip will be firmer, but still encourage him to write de novo at times. and lol ! be generous with very good, great man, clap for yourselve etc all the way, and for now stop as soon as hes not interested.

Call your insurance company. They will give you a list of specialists in and out of your network. You can do your research on specific specialists from there

The more I read on this thread, the more I cringe.

PLEASE, do not follow every piece of advice here on this thread. You will make yourself and your child crazy.

AHDH, behavioral specialists, reading and writing at 3?

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TEACH A CHILD HOW TO READ AND WRITE AT 3.

And there is nothing wrong with your child if he is not yet ready to learn it.

Try again when he is four and that's it for now.
Everything else is an overreaction.

I am assuming your child can talk now,if he can then Contrary to what some others said,a 3 year old should be able to recognize many alphabets and know numbers up to 10 and basic colors red, blue, white, black, green yellow.
Here are some tips on some cheap way you can make this happen. You don't need any IPads or computers

Get a chart with alphabets
The big type that looks like an almanac with A is is for apple,B is for balloon and C is for cake.
Children learn better by visualization of pictures in a fun way
Teach him three to five at a time depending on his speed and pace i.e A to C or A to E
After he has mastered those, you move to the next set
You must be patient,no yelling,no spanking, lots of encouragements, show no frustrations.
make it a fun experience not a scary time and attach a treat to it
For instance,"Jonny, after you learn this, you get a toy car"

Same thing for numbers , do 3 at a time
Next day just those three until he masters them then move on to 4,5,6
Depending on his pace ,you can do three alphabets and three numbers
After he masters 4,5,6,next day,you repeat this time 1-6
And ask them at random, not in order, you point at 1,then 4 then 2 etc

After you are done with the big charts and he has mastered them
Get flash cards with the numbers or alphabets or make them yourselves
Just square cards ( cut up square pieces of papers )with the numbers and alphabets all written on a single card boldly
And pull them out one at a time ,not in order and ask him what they are
This is to consolidate what he has learned.

Let him learn all the capital letters first then you teach him small letters

The other thing I did with my kids was that every time was a learning time
wherever I saw things written,in the store,on the street,I pointed and asked them what the letters were
For colors when we went out I would ask " what color is that man's shirt" ? What color is daddy's shirt?
What color is the traffic light now? Etc
Playing scrabble with hubby,I will ask the kids to read out the alphabets on the board

I am telling you exactly what I did with my children,it works but please note that
All children don't learn at the same pace
My first son is a whiz and could write his name at the age of two,yes he is a very smart boy and my daughter started writing her name at the age of 4, she is very smart too.

Don't do such things. Studies show that rewarding children with toys and stuff like this destroys intrinsic motivation.

there are many free resources on internet and some nice cartoons on youtube that will help your child. i used them since my daughter was 10 months and by 18 months, she was very good in recognized it. now she 4 y/o and she can write small sentence if you spell for her and she is trying to read too. just have patience and make this learning activity to be fun. children learn by repetition and association. good luck!

I don't reward with gifts cos I know d implication of dt, if I do dt at home, will his teacher also reward him with toys in sch? Rather I ask him to clap for him self or give hi-five, and kisses.

@OP why are you fretting. His he smart in other areas. I mean do you have any reason to doubt his mental capacity, in terms of cognitive and motor activities.

This is because my son had the same issues, but he did have challenges in terms of alertness to his environment and he has improved alot. However, you must do plenty of readings to him and probably downloading apps that read to kids.

OP

Please you need to work on your child as in create time for him. if it is going to be 30mins everyday

A 3 yr old kid in Nigeria shld be in either playgrp or nur 1 and at that stage, he should be able to identify and write 1-20 while some can perform above this or what are you paying school fees for? To watch barney and friends or what at 3?

Please dnt relax because it will get to a stage he wont be able to catch up with his mates (God forbid)

Because teachers have numbers of kids in class, they tend to concentrate more on the brilliant ones. Imagine his teacher just telling you now that she will start to check on him. What has she been doing since? SO she doesnt know the performances of her students? That is too bad

Parents also should not neglect everything to the teachers. If you work very well with your child the teachers will be serious with your child

Does he have a report book, dont they give assignments and what about open day? Maybe you need to change the school

Take your child to a montessori school. Buy this wall calendar that has ABC, 1,2,3 , colours and shapes and keep in the sitting room. Study with him and with time he will turn himself to a teacher and start reading by himself.

Finally, always pray for him every morning. Ask God to open his understanding, give him wisdom and command the spirit of excellence upon him abeg.

It is well my sis

Thanks a lot, he's in a new class Kg, so dis is a new teacher entirely, she has been keeping to her promises. She has been using different things to teach him his letters, my son came home d other day and used my detached bag handle to form letter s, he uses pencils to form letter H, and just today, he used d strap of his shoe to form letter X by crossing them. His recognition skill isn't yet consistent though so, we still have a lot to do. I do pray for him too, I appreciate ur contribution, God bless u

Thanks a bunch for ur time. Not that I'm fretting but he is my first so I just want to be sure of what to do to help, of course, he's smart in other areas, his midterm scripts came in on Monday and he did well in d oral while d writing and recognition of alphabets is still a challenge. His motor skill has improved as his hand is now very firm on paper, his cognitive skill has also improved as he understands instructions better, his participatory ability is also improving as his sunday school teachers also confirmed it. The basis now is recognition.
So what are d things dt made ur son improve? Or did he just outgrow it and what is his age?

Madam I believe your son is ok. Where u should be concerned is if he can't vocalise anything. Slow/ slured speech. Some kids don't identify easily. They need constant revision. So stuck up on charts etc. The basic things age three should know in Nigeria- Chant the letters A- Z, identify A- H, count1-20, identify 1-10 or less. Remember we are still in first term and its a new class. Worry less dear. Till we get to second term you can then evaluate him.

I do not put him under any pressure dt I'm teaching him stuff, all he thinks is dt we are just playing and having fun together. He can now identify some alphabets and numbers but his orals are better.

Search for busy beavers videos on YouTube, they are very good. The way they learn is constant repetition just let him watch the numbers and alphabet videos everyday, with in a short while you will see a massive improvement.

And this is the key to your son's sucess.
When I read through this thread I was horrified at some of the suggestions I was seeing. But at the end of the day I guess it all boils down to plain ignorance and competitiveness on the part of parents especially mothers who use thier children to compete with each other.

A child's brain is like a sponge. At three years you can push him/her so hard that they will be able to play the piano for you and even spell complicated words like "exacerbation" if you like. That doesn't make them smarter, just adapting to the pressure they are being put under.

Such children however risk running into early burnout later in life. You either have adolescent children who have no real educational foundation in that they crammed everything while younger and then the parent wonders why the child knows all the words in the dictionary but behaves like an ldiot when they enter the university or when it comes to solving real life problems.
Or you have children that grow up to be recluses, withdrawn, only interested in academia and no social adaptation whatsoever. Such children cannot make friends, cannot mix with others of their own peers, are total social misfits with poor leadership skills i.e they are very intelligent academically but are not creative and cannot lead others. They will forever follow the bandwagon and will never come up with anything original on their own.

Our modern schools IN NIGERIA only make things worse. In a bid to compete with themselves and please parents who want to have baby geniuses by fire and by force, they go out of their way to teach these little ones totally ridiculous and unnecessary things for their age range. Most of the teachers themselves do not even have any legitimate teacher-training and are either secondary school leavers or graduates in other fields trying to make money while waiting for their dream jobs.

I went to a school for inspection and will you believe the teachers are making the KG#3 pupils take notes like lecturers dictating to students! And when queried all they could say was other schools around do the same. For KG3!!! Of course many of the children fell behind but with enough caning, "shaming" and bad results to the parents to make the parents pay for extra lessons these poor children started learning to take dictation by fire by force. You think this will not have an adverse effect on them later in life? Of course it will.

KG means Kindergarten. It is a German word that literally means "Children's garden" and essentially comprises teaching children between the ages of 2 and 7 to learn via playing, singing, practical activities like drawing and social interaction as part of the transition from home to school. Its a time of learning by playing and interaction with their environment. This is important so as to breed intuitive creative and thinking individuals, people that will be leaders and problem solvers, mature adults. The methods we see in school today where they are teaching Kg2 children biology and french when they have barely begun to grasp English language just to please overbearing parents will only give rise to the production of follow-follow non-intuitive humans who will forever follow the herd mentality.
