ThatVvnGurl: I read all you wrote. The thing is that health care is not free neither is it cheap. Inasmuch as we want to save lives the hospital will fold if it keeps rendering services for free in the name of saving lives. Nope no one's supposed to render free services either, everyone goes into business for profit but, in some medical cases you could stabilize a bit to at least draw that patient back from death, then demand for your money before further treatment but most of these hospitals would not even respond at all to you. In the Op's story a bit of stabilizing would have helped that child first and probably encourage the parents to run around for funds. |

helpee: You are still repeating the same thing. I should save life first with what ? with my hand? is it not money we will use to buy ventilator, oxygen, drugs and co or you think everything is typhoid and malaria that you can always treat with 2k. You dont know about hospitals.....most general hospital in Nigeria are so bad that they commonly reject....1) cases with low chances of survival 2) cases that can tie up their bed for a long time. Wether you believe it or not, it is the reality. so if they assumed wether rightly or wrongly your case is either they can refer you. That doesnt mean there wont be a time they WONT TRUELY LACK SPACE. so they may not have space truely. Moreso, you talk about SAVING LIFE FIRST. That is assuming i can save all lives. What if in the process of saving the life, the patient dies after incurring thousands in cost and the patient refuses to pay WHICH IS THE TREND IN NIGERIA.I should ask the writer of the hippocratic oath to pay me back? Look we are not saying in all cases, we all know that some cases would require some measures like you said, but for heaven sake according to the OP, the child had an infected ear which could be stabilised before requesting for funds , most of these hospitals do not even think towards that direction and it's really so sad. |

helpee: you are the main problem we have. It is not right for the boy to die for lack of fund neither is it right for the private hospital to use their money to treat the boy. How many patient do you think a private hospital can treat on credit with their own money when it is most likely the patient wont pay once they are well or if the boy eventually dies? so nigerians must stop blaming private hospitals for demanding for their money but rather make govt enact a law that will ensure insurance or some other people pay back money after emergency treatment. Once they tell you there is no space in LASUTH....na lie. It means the case is so critical that chances of survival is slim. Such cases are naturally expensive. If the private hospital accepts them and treat them without deposit, should the patient die, not only will you lose all the money you have spent they will even blame you for not doing enough. They will refuse to ppay forgeting the effort you made in treating a critically ill patient usually requires fund. How much credit can private hospitals accommodate in a month? What happened to saving a life first according to the Hippocratic oath that these Medics were trained to live by? What happened to resuscitating and stabilizing the patient first before proper treatment, and of course requesting for funds before the proper treatment. Even before demanding for funds there should have been some form of stabilization on the patient. I was involved in an accident some years back and i went to LASUTH at Ikeja , was told that there was no bed the same happened at another teaching Hospital, would you say that was because the chances of survival was slim? I took the same situation to Igbobi and before registration they worked on my injuries on the spot right there in the ambulance and today i am alive to tell the story. Truth be told, irrespective of the existing situations and conditions, this life savers have abandoned their Oath and are only thinking about money. |

ultron12345: The government is to blame for this for not providing enough beds and facilities in public hospitals, but how can they provide it when Nigerians pay abysmally low prices for public health services, untill the health sector is privatized and Nigerians or health insurance companies are made to pay the real cost of health services I don't see it getting better.
There is nothing wrong with the demand of N250k by the private hospital, they are businesses and have the right not to give services on credit And of course everything's right with a young child dying due to lack of funds right? People like you are our biggest problem. |

The story might be recycled but that doesn't make the phenomenon fake, sometimes the Op's repost this stories to sensitise people about happenings, this is happening now and it's real, so it isn't fake. |

Health › Strange Ways People Did Things Before Modern Conveniences by 1miccza(op): 4:20pm On Sep 21, 2017 |
We take many things for granted. In fact, there are a lot of modern conveniences that we just accept as part of life. Most people reading this have toilet paper, toothbrushes, running water, and electricity—and they don’t really have to figure out how to get by without them. But there was a time when these things didn’t exist. People had to figure out other ways to do all those everyday tasks we take for granted. Things used to be a lot harder. And we don’t mean having to rewind VHS tapes before bringing them back to Blockbuster. This is going to be a lot worse than that—and a lot weirder.
BEFORE FRIDGES, PEOPLE DROPPED FROGS IN MILK
Before refrigerators were invented, most people’s diets were very different. There’s a lot of food that just isn’t practical if you can’t keep it cold. For example, milk goes bad quite quickly without a fridge to put it in, so most people just didn’t drink it that often. But not the Russians. The Russians found a different solution. They put frogs in their milk.[1]In some parts of Russia, people would drop frogs into buckets of milk to keep it from spoiling. That sounds a little strange, but oddly enough, it actually worked. The frogs’ skins were coated in an antibiotic peptide that kept bacteria from contaminating the milk, which actually made it safe to drink for a longer time. Not that the Russians knew that. We didn’t figure that out until about five years ago. The people who did this had no idea that the frogs were keeping their milk from going bad until just recently. They were just dropping frogs into milk for reasons that no one can quite explain.
