The Igbo Think Tank, Nzuko Ndigbo, and other Igbo groups in the diaspora will converge on Umuahia on December 28, for the 4th edition of an International Christmas Retreat, where decision on 2023 election will be taken.

Also expected at the event are Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) G5, clergy, traditional rulers, captains of industry, student leaders, youth and women leaders.

Organisers of the retreat said during the event, a decision concerning the Igbo on the 2023 general polls would be taken and communique issued.

Disclosing these, while addressing newsmen in Umuahia, the Trustee of Igbo Think Tank, Maduike Ezeibe and Chairman, Local Organising, Chuks Ibegbu; and leader, Nzuko Ndigbo respectively, said: “The Igbo should be given the 1999 settlement which calmed the tension in the country.”

Ezeibe, who is renowned for discovering drugs for treatment of HIV, said the arrangements that produced former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, which calmed the June 12 imbroglio, should be applied in 2023 for an Igbo man to become the president.

Ezeibe pointed out that if the 1999 is applied, the tensions in the country, especially the insecurity challenges in the South East may be a thing of the past.

“We know what happened in 1999. Our brother, Ekwueme formed the PDP, but Obasanjo was brought out from the prison and made the president under an arrangement to calm the tension in the West.”

He pointed out that the Igbo have sacrificed a lot for the country by living and developing every place they find themselves, noting that it was time for the nation to reciprocate their commitment.

The event which will hold at Michael Okpara auditorium, Umuahia, would also be used by the Igbo to decide on whom to support in 2023 general election.

The theme for the International Christmas Retreat is “Ndigbo, yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” while the sub-theme would be “Ndigbo in Geo Politics of Nigeria, the case of 2023,”

The organisers noted that respected Igbo scholars like Elochukwu Amucheazi, Maduike Ezeibe, Obasi Igwe and Chris Osuagwu would deliver lectures on the way forward for the Igbo, at the event.

A leading Igbo socio-cultural and political association, Igboekulie, has endorsed the candidacy of Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, for the 2023 presidential election.

A statement jointly signed by the group’s president and secretary, Benjamin C. Onuora and Ben Obidegwu, respectively, noted that Obi has the capacity to pilot the affairs of Nigeria in 2023 for the sake of progress and equity.


Igboekulie said an opportunity to have a man like Obi to provide the needed credible and strategic leadership comes to a nation once in a while.

Describing Obi as a man that ticks all the presidential boxes in Nigeria today, the group also noted that the Labour Party presidential candidate is well educated, disciplined, frugal, humble, exposed, understands banking and finance, abhors ostentatious lifestyle, experienced and has empathy to promote charity across Nigeria.

It said: “Never in the political history of Nigeria has a candidate joined a moribund political party and within a few months, turned it into a national movement for the emancipation of Nigerians from oppression, hunger, illiteracy, and hopelessness.

“While his main opponents are busy accusing each other of corruption in and out of public service, Obi’s only fault is that he did not steal Anambra State funds, but saved N75 billion for the succeeding administration.

“Yet, he built roads, schools, hospitals, provided security, paid all state employees and contractors and left no debt for his successor among other numerous achievements. Under him, Anambra State came first in West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams, Millennium Development Goals implementation and road infrastructure among others.

“Let us not miss this opportunity. Nigeria needs massive foreign and local investments to survive. These investments will not come unless the new president is honest and transparent in the eyes of Nigerians and foreign investors.

“Corruption cannot be reduced in Nigeria unless the President and his Vice have no corruption baggage. They must be demonstrably transparent and lead by example before that can happen.

“To banish poverty in Nigeria and infuse hope in the youths, we need a detribalised Nigerian to lead us. A new Nigeria is indeed possible with the lofty ideas espoused in the manifesto of the Labour Party and Peter Obi.”

Ordinarily, encounters between the citizens and the Police or other law enforcement agents should be reassuring and delightful. In fact, the mere sight of the Police ought to generate in the citizen an instant feeling of relief, safety and security. This unfortunately, is not the reality in Nigeria today.

In fact, some encounters in the past had led to embarrassment, injuries, permanent disability and, in extreme cases, death of the citizens. Similarly, some security agents have also suffered molestation and harm from such encounters.

While Police officers are reminded of the need to exercise ‘courageous calm’ and avoid resort to the use of deadly force or lethal weapon at the slightest provocation, members of the public on the other hand are expected to avoid actions that could turn simple encounters with security personnel into more serious ones.

It is against this backdrop that we are today providing our readers with tips that could help in enhancing cordial relationship between the Police and the citizenry.

Tips for safe and cordial relationship at check points

When approaching a security checkpoint or when flagged-down by the Police or other security agencies;

Endeavor to slow down your vehicle. It shows that you are not reckless. It also douses suspicion that you are a criminal and may want to speed-off.

Turn down the volume of your car stereo. Courtesy demands this. Besides, you are able to hear each other better. This simple act will also help you to win the confidence of the security operative.

Keep your hands visible to avoid unnecessary suspicion or fear by the officers that you are attempting to bring out a gun or other harmful objects to attack them.

Turn on the inner light of your vehicle while approaching the cops (if at night). It readily sends an unspoken message that you have nothing to hide.

Be friendly and cheerful. Commend the officers especially when you see them working under very unfriendly weather conditions such as the rains, the harsh harmattan conditions, excessive heat, cold or sunshine. We know it’s their job, but a little kind word from you will do a lot of good. Remember when you smile at the mirror, the mirror smiles back at you.

Endeavour to be polite even when answering questions put to you by the officers.

Don’t dare or challenge an armed security man to a duel. Oftentimes, you hear people say things like ‘shoot me, if you can!” Note that this is a recipe for disaster! It is very provocative and an unnecessary call for war. So, please play safe, more so, as you do not know the state of mind of the officer concerned.

Also, don’t go into a physical fight with an armed security officer. He may resort to the use of his weapon (rightly or wrongly) to defend himself.

Avoid unnecessary argument with armed security personnel. There are a thousand and one ways to seek redress where you feel your rights have been infringed upon.

Never try to touch an officer in an unfriendly manner. He may suspect you of trying to disarm him.

If you are a regular traveler or road user, make sure you have the police emergency phone numbers of the route you operate. You never can tell when an emergency situation could arise and you need the Police to come to your aid.

Make sure you have all your relevant car papers and desist from actions or inactions that constitute either a criminal or traffic offence. Such infractions of the law provide veritable grounds for possible charges and other forms of adversarial contact with the Police or other law enforcement agencies, including unnecessary arguments.

Don’t give the impression that you are unhappy to see an officer on his beat or that he is wasting your time. But if you do have an emergency, politely inform the officer. Don’t speed off while still being checked.

Take note of the name tags, Force or Service numbers, personal description, description of weapons or patrol vehicle of the security officer especially where the officers begin to conduct themselves in unprofessional manner.

Seek audience with the most senior police officer at the check point if things are not working out smoothly.

Politely insist to be taken to the police station if your complaint is not properly addressed.

The Federal High Court in ABUJA have discharge and acquitted the IGP of the conviction and 3 months sentence. The Judgement was passed Wednesday 14th December 2022; this was as a result of IGP fulfilling the necessary obligation.
