Family / Re: Would You Pay Your Children For Chores They Do? by 1ofall(f): 2:57pm On Jun 13, 2006
Well, when I think "chores" I think of them doing their share around the house, if they are doing a job you would have paid someone else to do, then why shouldn't you pay them?? Of course,I might negotiate to pay them less, but it would be their right to refuse,
Family / Re: How Do You Deal With Insultive Kids by 1ofall(f): 4:43pm On Jun 07, 2006
@cammax7,
Is it your kid? or at least are you in contact with the child often, the reason I ask is it will require some consistency, anyway here's what works for me,
When the child says the word I have a problem with, say in your case "you are stupid" I take them aside and tell them I do not like that word, it is not a nice word to use, and if they use it again such and such will happen as punishment, could be a time out, taking something they like, and when it happens again(which is usually soon) I remind them of our conversation and follow through on the punishment, however they kick, scream and object, when they realise I mean business, they do do it. After a few tries the word is removed, and removing subsequent undesired words/behaviour is easier,
Hope you find something that works for you.

ETA:
I don't believe in beating kids, it didn't work on me and in my experience a 4yr old child likes to be talked to not at, and sometimes it's just about defining boundaries or looking for reactions,
Travel / Re: One-way Ticket To Europe by 1ofall(f): 3:09pm On Jun 07, 2006
My Aunt and Cousin who both hold American passports had to get return tickets when they were visiting EU last year(Italy, UK, Ireland), first destination for them was Ireland.
I think if you are coming as a visitor you may have to have return tickets, except you are on a working holiday visa or similar. You should check and confirm the entry requirements for the first country you are visiting/arriving at.
Fashion / Re: Would You Use Contact Lenses? by 1ofall(f): 12:38pm On Jun 07, 2006
I used contact lenses for a while(clear ones), despite advice to the contrary-I've got extremely dry eyes, and I had to stop after a while. I got pretty good at putting them in, and taking them out, only took a few mins. You can now get the extended wear ones too,
I've also been considering laser surgery, but seeing as I am such a wus, I might be sticking to the glasses for a while yet.
Career / Re: Graduates: Is Your Occupation Related To Your Degree? by 1ofall(f): 1:50pm On Jun 02, 2006
You don’t go to university just to get a job. Infact, I think a university education is more about opening your mind and learning to think critically and analytically amongst other things. It isn’t like a trade school.
In some universities, students are allowed to get credits for extra curricular activities such as involvement in a club, society, SU, sports, etc.

Re:point (4)- The fact that these women are not in a work place doesn’t mean they are not using the skills they learned….I am sure I ‘ve read or heard something about the correlation of mothers’ level of education and that of their children …maybe someone else might have heard/read of it. You know what they say…educate a woman, you’ve educated a nation.

Finally, I know people who have abandoned their professions because
1) They re-aligned their priorities…e.g a career driven woman who decides to change track to do something more family-friendly….another person has given up his job to work for an NGO cos he wants to “make a difference.”….Yet another went to follow their dream…, the list goes on…
Fashion / Re: What Works For You? Perfumed Talc, Foundation, Pressed/loose (brown) Powder by 1ofall(f): 10:04am On Jun 02, 2006
Most feel heavy on my skin, but using a tinted moisturiser with some shimmer works just fine for me, gives a sheer "glow" to my dry skin, but I don't use this everyday as I am too lazy!
TV/Movies / Re: X-men: Last Stand Review by 1ofall(f): 10:04am On May 31, 2006
Saw this just last night, and it certainly made for enjoyable viewing, good action sequences but the time for the movie was too short, I felt there was too much squashed into the time available. Would have liked to see more developement of Storm's character, the girl who could read mind, sense mutants, etc had a relatively small part, rogue might as well have been killed off for all the part she played in the movie,
All in all, the concept of the cure was good but I think there just wasn't enough time to develope the characters as they deserved(sme of them anyway) , me thinks there might be an extended movie on the dvd, I missed that bit at the end but saw magneto's metal chess piece move, I don't believe the last stand is the last stand at all,

Bros, you'd do well to stay WELL away from her, stop seeing her altogether, what is your connection with her anyway??I am wonderin what a man in his late twenties is doing spending so much time alone with a teenager of the opposite sex who does not seem to be a relation of his
At this rate even if you have enough sense to keep your zip up, she might take offence and cry wolf anyway(woman scorned and all that, ) and if that happens you'd be hard pushed to proove otherwise seeing as you seem to have been alone with her on many occasions.
You better give am WIDE space!

Family / Re: Ladies Who Hold On To Their Father's Surname In Marriage by 1ofall(f): 9:22am On May 26, 2006
For some it has nothing to do with pride, if you've gathered any experience especially professionally, it's simpler to keep your original surname, sure you might gradually introduce your "new" one but personally I couldn't be bothered-except my husband took exception to it, at the end of the day, it's just a name, and you know the saying, "a rose by any other name is still a rose"
TV/Movies / Re: 'Lord Of The Rings' Or 'Harry Potter' Movie? by 1ofall(f): 11:17am On May 22, 2006
I voted LOTR but I don't think they compare, Harry potter is mostly aimed at a younger audience whereas LOTR is deeper,

Health / Re: Hearing Aids For My Younger Sister. by 1ofall(f): 10:52am On May 22, 2006
Hi, is your sister profoundly deaf? If she is, a hearing aid wouldn't help her as far as I am aware, but she might benefit from using a cochlear implant, I don't know if these are available in Nigeria.
On the other hand if she has some hearing loss, and needs sound amplified, then the hearing aid should be okay,
You should get her checked by a specialist,

Fashion / Re: Would You Go Shopping With Your Partner? by 1ofall(f): 10:46am On May 22, 2006
No, what's the fun going with someone who doesn't enjoy it and whose opinion on everything is, "it's okay??" and then goes on to ask every 5minutes if you are going to be much longer? infact , hell NO!!
Travel / Re: Nigerians In Diaspora: Where Do You Want To Be Buried? by 1ofall(f): 10:09am On May 22, 2006
Like Afeni,I also want to be cremated, which my family generally find offensive, my mum says it inhumane
I am very unlikely to move back to Nigeria, I think spending all that  money to carry a corpse home is ridiculous, neither do I like the idea of the possiblity of my "rest" or bones being disturbed, discovered or whatever down the line, when I'm gone ,I want to be GONE!
Travel / Re: Share Your European Living Experience by 1ofall(f): 2:16pm On May 16, 2006
Hi Chinani,
I don’t know how successful you’ll be finding a job in Europe from the US as if you are doing the travelling thing…you’ll be looking for casual jobs…these aren’t often advertised, most people tend to get them as they move around.
Also remember that  EU countries have work permit restrictions- as in America so I don’t know how these would affect you…but I would say don’t plan to live off whatever you earn working…be sure to save enough to at least get by….bear in mind the euro-dollar exchange rate
Most are okay…if you are legal. If not, it can be rough…as anywhere else.
It’s a lot cheaper if you spend the bulk of your time in the less touristy places. You do have to go about with some ID…but as a foreigner that is common sense anyway.
If you are going to non-English speaking countries, try to learn enough of the language to say simple things …(more than likely they will still reply to you in eglish, but they appreciate your effort)
You’ll find fitness gyms…but I’d suggest you keep your money for better things…you can run for free or something along those lines.
There is usually an area with a concentration of Africans (mostly Nigerians) in most of the countries…and there you’ll find braiders, hairdressers, food, etc,
Will you be travelling alone?

Sorry if I am missing something here.

Family / Re: Pregnancy And Labour Pains by 1ofall(f): 12:29pm On Apr 27, 2006
Childbirth is an experience like no other but there are so many misconceptions about it, won't begin to go into them, let's just talk about the pain,
I think the important thing is to be prepared and go with an open mind.Labour pain like any other varies from one woman to another, there are both psychological and physiological factors at play here.
I see you are in the UK, there's so many ways of coping with labour pain, many women actually go thru labour using just gas and air(ethonox) and the breathing exercises. Others to consider are pethidine(an injection), tens, some have even got relief from using relaxation techniques(yoga) and hypnobirthing.

Don't make up your mind before hand, see how you get on and take it from there. At the same time don't try to be superwoman, if you think you need an epidural, ask for it, but let it be after you've tried others.

Bear in mind that .swf file is going to be converted to .exe eventually,

Webmasters / Re: Is A Site With Flash W3C Compliant? by 1ofall(f): 8:28pm On Mar 27, 2006
ok, had typed up another reply hope this posts now, Yep, xhtml uses the object tag –sometimes combined with the old embed one…to ensure compatibility with all browsers.
Jogego has put it nicely….cross browser compatibility is part of W3C standards or recommendations.
I may be reading this wrong but I think what Seun is saying is …first define your audience and their requirements and then build to meet those requirements….complying with W3C recommendations should not be your sole priority ie don't try to conform to standards just for the sake of it,
@Zahymaka there’s a good no of ladies in IT …okay maybe it’s still mainly a man’s world …not sure why…as for moi…I decided to learn some scripting and coding so I would not be messed about my colleagues-programmers and developers…when I need a project completed. Alas, I don’t have the time to take it as seriously as I would have liked,
Webmasters / Re: Is A Site With Flash W3C Compliant? by 1ofall(f): 4:58pm On Mar 27, 2006
I would say no if you are using mx, in flash 8, maybe as I 've heard this has been addressed to an extent in flash 8, (peharps someone will confirm this?) From just reading their blurb, it would seem they have addresses some accessiblity issues but I doubt that it would be fully compliant.
If you have just a tiny bit as you say, depending on what it is, maybe providing an alternative to cover that(maybe in html, css and maybe xml)other wise you will be excluding a part of your audience from accessing that part of your site.
Here's some info from W3C
http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/WAI-WEBCONTENT-19990505/wai-pageauth.pdf

and this is from the macromedia's site

"While a wide range of design possibilities can be made to comply with the Section 508 guidelines using design techniques and integrating complementary technologies with Macromedia Flash, some Macromedia Flash content will never be accessible using the current Macromedia Flash Player. Such content includes dynamic text variables and custom navigational elements, which are not exposed to the operating system using the same methods as HTML"

Okafor well done on your podcast, you sounded like you knew your ABS! I think you sounded very calm for a first interview and how nervous you say you were.
I am wondering why your black soap is not from Nigeria? And your sheabutter? Would love to see these promoted too,
As for your accent well, not sure sure what you want to know about it, but it didn't distort your message, you were clear enough to be understood(I just played it for a couple of colleagues)

Eastcoast:

o my god, u are absolutely right. this is so so stereotypical. i see it all the time. even at black weddings, they always do that dance in the name of love thing, of to the left right, turn, u know what i am saying but it doesn't happen at white weddings/partys.

I love the dancing @ "black" parties though, they are soooo lively!! The music, the dancing, no quibbling cos A and B turned up when they weren't invited,
The liveliest dance I 've seen at "white" weddings is the "okie pokie"
Family / Re: Husbands Who Beat Their Wives by 1ofall(f): 3:09pm On Mar 17, 2006
Domestic violence is wrong, where he is beating her or in the rare event that she is doing the beating(it happens).
Beating someone who is physically not as strong as you is a sign of weakness, and serious insecurities.
The signs are always there as a previous poster has said, and each time it gets worse,
But, never mind the bully doing the beating, what is that makes some women feel they deserve to be beaten? Or that it's proof that he loves them?!Even when they do it in front of the children?
I know all about the razor tongue/acid tongue, but you know what they say, "sticks and stones,, "
I think to stop it, the victim has to be willing first to speak up and let other people support them,  and then stand up to or/and  to walk away from the bully.
Family / Re: Boyfriend Spends So Much Money On Stay-at-home Mom by 1ofall(f): 2:54pm On Mar 17, 2006
Unhappy, here is my 2cents…

This situation seems to have been existing before you moved in, …just that you were not aware of it, you really ought to have discussed who would pay for what before you all moved in together. You are now aware, what do you want to do about it? If you are intending to have a lasting relationship with this boy, then you do have to talk about it with him.As it is its a timebomb waiting to go off,

While I can understand him supporting his mum within reason (even though @42 she is too young to need that much supporting unless she is ill or something-which you say she isn’t?)It doesn’t sound like it’s within reason if he is leaving all YOUR bills AS A COUPLE to you. He shouldn’t need to support her partner/husband as well at your detriment! What about if you had to support your family too?

You may have to take yourself out of the equation and till you understand things better, and can come to an acceptable compromise with him-outside of the situation. You should certainly not have to "accept" it just because you want to be with him.
Nairaland / General / Re: Embarrassed In The Company Of Nigerians by 1ofall(f): 4:35pm On Mar 10, 2006
@Jakumo, your post has me laughing so much my colleagues are begging to see "the joke"
I can just picture that scene, not pretty!
@K9, that isn’t even a theory…not even folklore…both of those have some roots in reality. Everyone has an opinion…there are as many ideologies as people so I won’t address your source but honestly do you expect us to agree with this severely flawed “theory” of yours? Maybe you believe yourself to be so inferior but please don’t insult us (or certainly me) by trying to post .
Ok…back to original question…I get embarrassed sometimes but very rarely, I've got a thick hide and besides, "everybody answer im papa name", you say your friend is very educated…but remember there is more to being educated than getting good grades in school. I have friends like that and at this stage they are just amusing….
Would like to point out though that belief in witchcraft and the like is not the preserve of Nigerians…you only need to look at how popular tarot readers and the like are…Look at the programmes like most haunted and the like…there is a vast audience that think along same lines in the western world…
That’s what your friend believes and he is entitled to it…maybe he’ll change his mind soon…maybe not…
