Politics‘Killing Of Christians’: MURIC Slams CAN & Trump For Questioning Buhari by 2020Experience(op): 1:29pm On Sep 10, 2020
10th September, 2020

PRESS RELEASE:

TRUMP’S QUESTION: CAN SOLD NIGERIA TO THE US

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, Tuesday 9th September, 2020, recalled that President Donald Trump of the United States (US) asked him during his visit to the US in 2018 why he was killing Christians. Reacting to this incident, the Nigerian Muslim rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria of selling Nigeria to the US. MURIC also advised the US leader not to bully the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

MURIC spoke on Wednesday 10th September, 2020 via its helmsman, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“We take serious objection to the language used by President Donald Trump of the US when he spoke with President Muhammadu Buhari. Trump asked Buhari, ‘Why are you killing Christians in Nigeria?’

“That question was based on false and misleading reports which the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has been sending to the outside world. We expect Trump to know better because the killings are not being done by the Nigerian security agencies. How then can the Nigerian president be accused of doing the killings?

“Again, it is not Christians alone that are being killed. Muslims are also victims. This is the same false information that was spread about Boko Haram. People were told that the terrorists were killing Christians only and bombing churches. It was later learnt that Boko Haram is killing emirs, Imams, Islamic scholars and ordinary Muslims too. The violent group was also destroying mosques.

“The crisis is mainly between herders and farmers, not between the government of Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerian Christians. So how can anyone accuse President Buhari of killing Christians? Apart from this, herders-farmers clashes predate Buhari’s administration. It has been occurring for a very long time. It was there in ex-President Jonathan’s period and even in ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s days.

“Jonathan and Obasanjo are Christians but the killings also occurred during their regimes. Why is CAN externalizing it and making it look as if a Muslim president is killing Nigerian Christians? CAN is selling Nigeria too cheaply to the US. Worse still, it is using false propaganda to achieve this parochial objective. We have no doubt that the narrative will change if Buhari is succeeded by a Christian president. Why is CAN always determined to give no peace to any Nigerian president?

“Even the question was in bad taste and the questioner (President Trump) least qualified to interrogate the president of another sovereign nation. The world sees Trump misrepresenting the American nation today. His administration is falling apart. Men of integrity are distancing themselves from him. What right, therefore, has Trump to question Buhari?

“89 former defence officials recently trashed Trump (https://www.businessinsider.com/89-former-defense-officials-speak-out-against-trumps-protest-response-2020-6?IR=T). They accused him of dividing Americans and rubbishing America’s integrity.

“Former security advisers from his Republican party also spoke last week. They alleged that Trump had gravely damaged America’s role as a world leader; that he is unfit to lead during a crisis; that he had failed to stand up for American values; that he had dishonoured the presidency and that he had ‘divided our nation’ (https://www.defendingdemocracytogether.org/national-security/, https://www.illuminateourworld.org/post/over-70-gop-national-security-officials-from-the-reagan-and-bush-years-say-trump-is-unfit-to-lead).

“It is clear from the above that Trump’s administration is scattered like wild oats and resignations occur on a daily basis. How can such a leader play the role of an interrogator? He wants to divide Nigeria the way he divided the US. He lacks the pre-requisites to harness facts and to objectively and independently analyse them. Trump has no locus standi to ask any leader such a question because he himself lacks credibility. Americans have gotten for themselves a president they do not deserve this time around.

“Above all, leaders of CAN should stop peddling lies about the killings in some parts of the country. They are heating up the polity and reasonable Nigerians no longer believe them.

“In a nutshell, Trump should stop breathing down the neck of Buhari. Nigeria is not a satellite of America. Neither is Buhari another Manuel Noriega. Nobody can twist the most credible leader on the African continent around his fingers. Even Panama has wised up.”

Since 2010, armed Fulani herdsmen have been slaughtering people in almost every state Nigeria, but that did not stop Nigerians electing a Fulani man called Muhammadu Buhari President in 2015 and 2019

Sorry to deviate..

Am I the only one or is there someone else who has noticed that recently, any issue affecting the whole of nigeria, like bad policies from the government, increased in VAT, electricity bill or fuel pump price increase..the Igbos hardly join in protest. When I said Igbos I mean the 5 South eastern states.

Is this to show that despite majority of Igbos being against this government, yet those that supported the government(especially north and south west) are the ones being hit by the famine? Cause there has been series of protests in Abuja, Lagos and some other northern and south western states, yet the 5 eastern states are quiet about it and going about their normal businesses.

Two things are involved,
1. It is either the Igbos don't see the challenges as a burden. Or

2. Igbos truly don't care about Nigeria and only interested in Biafra.. meaning whatever is happening in Nigeria is none of their business.
Oga leave Igbos alone, they already did their best for you guys condemning this government and warning you all initially. The rest is left for you guys, thank you for saying some particular people foisted this government on Nigerians. So I’m sure this particular people knows how to stop the government they foisted on Nigerians and not Igbos.

Python Dance III: South East Governors’ Forum Tasks Army On Professionalism
September 8, 2020

The South East Governors Forum has called on officers and men of the Nigerian Army to be professional in the execution of their duties under the Operation Python Dance III in the zone.
Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi , who is the Chairman of the forum, gave the charge in Abakaliki, while receiving the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen. Abubakar Maikobi.
Umahi charged the army to be professional, to win the confidence of the people in the face of heightened tension, occasioned by the 2019 general elections.

“The south east zone has been greatly troubled by the army’s presence, especially with its clash with members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The army should therefore remain neutral and maintain a high level of professionalism in the discharge of its duties while the operation lasts,” he said.

The governor urged the military to evolve workable policies that would earn the confidence of the zone and remain neutral in the coming elections.

“The zone will not have problems with any place the army chooses to establish its operational headquarters as long as it maintains its professional mandate of protecting the people.

“Ebonyi, and indeed the entire South East, will resist with vigour, any attempt to rig during the elections, using security agencies as tools.

“The only way Nigeria will exist beyond 2019 is for credible elections to hold where all security agencies would be seen to be neutral,” he said.

Maikobi in his response, said he was in the state to familiarise with the government, the people, the state and zone as well as inform the governor of plans to commence the operation.

“I have been mandated by the Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) to inform you as the state’s security officer, that the exercise would commence from Jan.1 and last till Feb. 28.

“We have selected Ebonyi, under your purposeful leadership as the location for the step-up headquarters for the exercise,” he said.

Water Resources Bill is Done Deal, Says House Committee Chairman
September 8, 2020
•Dismisses Ortom, Soyinka, others’ opposition as ignorant

Udora Orizu in Abuja

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Sada Soli, has played down the opposition to the reintroduced Water Resources Bill, saying it won’t change the determination of the legislature to pass it.

He also criticised opponents of the bill, including Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, and Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, whom he accused of speaking out of ignorance because they did not read the draft of the legislation before making comments.

The lawmaker, who represents Jibia/Kaita Federal Constituency in Katsina State, vowed that the bill, which was earlier passed by the eighth House, won’t be stepped down.

The legislation titled: ‘A Bill for An Act to Establish a Regulatory Framework for the Water Resources Sector in Nigeria, Provide for the Equitable and Sustainable Redevelopment, Management, Use and Conservation of Nigeria’s Surface Water and Groundwater Resources and for Related Matter,’ when passed into law, would bring all water sources under the control of the federal government. This has led to criticisms as various stakeholders have said the bill negates the right of Nigerians to natural resources and undermines the country’s federalism.

Prominent leaders from Southern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, including Ortom and Soyinka, have kicked against the bill.

Also, socio-political organisations, including PANDEF, Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have condemned the bill, saying it’s an attempt by the federal government to secure the lands around the rivers in southern Nigeria to resettle the herdsmen after the failed Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) initiative.

Ortom had said the provisions of the bill were at variance with the Land Use Act, and that the bill was a “disguised land-grabbing legislation designed to grant pastoralists unhindered access to river basins, adjacent marine and coastal environments across the country.”

With the bill providing for the federal government to annex the banks of rivers that connect up to two states, concerns have been raised that the purpose of the promoters of the bill is to provide land for the herdsmen.

The fact that the key champions of the bill are legislators from the far north has fuelled this suspicion.

The bill’s opponents said it was curious that when Nigerians are agitating for the federal government to cede more powers to states, it’s allegedly embarking on land-grabbing.

A former senator, who spoke to THISDAY on condition of anonymity, recalled the role played by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who as the minority leader of the eighth Assembly, persuaded his colleagues to reconsider passing the bill.

“We were shocked when Akpabio appeared for ministerial screening, the distinguished Senate president told him that ‘now that you are on this side, you should go and liaise with the Minister of Water Resources to ensure that the Water Resources Bill is passed. That bill must be passed.’ When the Minister of Water Resources who was reappointed, also appeared before the Senate for the same screening, the minister said that his greatest regret in his first tenure was the non-passage of the bill. What did they see in this bill? What is special about this bill? Why the desperation to annex the waters and the land around the waters? There is a hidden agenda and sinister motive,” he stated.

A former member of the House also told THISDAY that the allegation of sinister motive on the part of the promoters of the bill should not be discountenanced.

He said: “As someone had pointed out, they want to confiscate the waterways and the surroundings and allocate to the herdsmen and claim that the government had also supported poultry farmers, maize farmers, cassava and fish farmers.

“The federal government has seized the oil resources and they want to also seize the water resources, even when the clamour for resource control is becoming increasingly popular. We understand that one of their major targets is the bank of River Benue. The suspicion is that they want to relocate herdsmen to the bank of the River Benue and other rivers in the south in the name of supporting livestock farming. They want to move herdsmen southwards because of the drying up of Lake Chad. They are using the revenue to be generated by the federal government as a disguise to hoodwink us.”

But Soli told THISDAY that the bill is in the best interest of Nigerians and that Ortom, Soyinka and every other person having misconceptions about it.

Soli said there was no provision in the bill that empowers the federal government to usurp the position of the states or local governments.

He added that the bill has nothing to do with RUGA policy.

According to him, the bill couldn’t be stepped down because the House has passed it already, adding that those who feel that there’s a motive to the bill should bring out the issues to the parliament and then amendment could be done.

“The bill can’t be stepped down because the House has passed it already; the lawmakers that are saying that they will step it down or that it was introduced illegally is because, may be, they were not there on the floor of the House when the members were given the opportunity to look at the bill not once or twice. Remember it was passed by the eighth Assembly.

”If people have something against the legislation, let them point it out and then it could be amended to conform to the wishes of Nigerians.

“If you didn’t understand something or have an idea about something, the easiest thing is that you will misconceive the whole idea.

“On the claims about the bill being RUGA in disguise, people should not display their parochial mindset or because they have a deep-seated hatred for this government policy and then they will transfer it to whatever the government places before the parliament. What has water resources got to do with RUGA? RUGA policy is a policy of the government, Water Resources Act stands alone. What is the connection?

“In the whole entire volume of that law that was passed, there was no mention of RUGA or grazing land or Fulani herdsmen. These are deep-seated hatred of government policy. This is a law that has been existing in the House and Nigeria for too long. The bill has been there since 1985. It is a combination of about four Acts; they were repealed and consolidated in one so that the water sector can have one kind of law. It’s easier to implement and determine how things should operate.

”On the claims that the bill is concentrating more powers on the federal government, it’s a lie. All those that are displaying this ignorance on the bill, didn’t read it. Let them take the bill and read it. There’s nowhere in that bill that the federal government will usurp the position of the states or local governments. It is clearly stated in Section 50 of the bill the roles the federal, state and local governments will play. Unfortunately, our leaders that are saying this didn’t read this bill.

”Water Resources Bill is important because we’ve had it before. There was Water Resources Act of 1985; there’s River Basin Development Authorities Act; there’s Water Resources Institute Act, Hydrological Integrated Agency Act and these were laws that were brought together, improved to meet up with the development in the water sector and best practices around the world.

”If people have something against the legislation, let them point it out, and then it could be amended to conform to the wishes of Nigerians. I have been asking people to tell me the section of that bill that they have a problem with. Not one could tell me. They are just speculating, saying RUGA this and that but there’s nothing talking about Rural Grazing Area in that bill. That’s a complete display of ignorance about the bill.

“But people have their suspicion because they don’t like what this government brings on board, simple. If it is something of concern, of course, people will sit down and look at it. It’s because they are lazy; they couldn’t read it to see how the principles will work and that’s why they are speculating all these shenanigans and confusing the general public.

“We need to harness, develop and protect our water resources. Or will you just allow our water resources at the mercy of other sovereignty? These are the innovations the federal government is trying to bring by putting all these legislations together and have one common legislation for the water sector so that it’s easy to manage and protect.”

Soli urged critics of the bill to lobby the legislature for the amendment of the bill.

“Let the people approach the parliament and then we do the needful. If it goes to the Senate and they decide to hold public hearings then they should, but the House has done that. There was a technical committee where all the ministries of water resources came to the National Assembly and they were part of the public hearing and all representations were brought even in the borehole drillers. The government of Benue State was also at the public hearing.

”From what I heard, the government of Benue is the only state that’s against this bill because they have a fixated mind about the RUGA thing. All the stakeholders were there before this bill was considered in 2017; so, what’s the problem? If they say the bill is against certain interests, what is the interest? Let them point it out.

“The Governor of Benue State Samuel Ortom, Wole Soyinka and others talking about this bill didn’t read it. I’m looking for an opportunity to meet these elder statesmen to educate them. They are being informed about something that does not exist. Maybe the backlash is political; maybe they feel it’s an achievement of this current government and they don’t want it. This is just an improvement of existing laws, nothing more or less,” he added.

PoliticsUS Congress Asks Buhari To Speak Out Against Killer Herdsmen. by 2020Experience(op): 4:25pm On Sep 07, 2020
The United States Congress has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to speak out against herdsmen killing people across the country. Chris Smith, the Chairman of the US House Subcommittee on Global Human Rights, made the call in a statement on the Release of the State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report. While saying that the Congress was “watching the situation in Nigeria with growing concern,” the statement accused the Federal Government of appearing “too often to be indifferent to attacks by Fulani herdsmen” on farmers. The statement, which also treated the situation in three other countries reads: Chair of the House Subcommittee on Global Human Rights and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, welcomed the release of the State Department’s annual International Religious Freedom Report and applauded Secretary Pompeo’s announcement of a Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom scheduled for July 25-26, 2018. “Getting the facts right on the global state of religious freedom is essential for the shaping of U.S. policy and priorities, and that is why the State Department’s annual report is so important,” said Smith, author of the Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act of 2016, which gave the State Department tools and authority to better promote international religious freedom. “I welcome the report’s release and urge concerted action to protect this fundamental freedom.” “Religious freedom is under siege globally, challenging U.S. interests. It is no coincidence that the worst violators of religious freedom globally are also the biggest threats to our nation—those who wish to do Americans the most harm, and those who most want to tear down the pillars of democratic societies,” Smith said. “Thus, a robust religious freedom diplomacy not only reflects American values, but advances U.S. national security interests. It seems the Administration understands these facts, I look forward to working with them on this critical issue.” Congressman Smith noted the need to take more direct action in certain countries: China: “China gets a failing grade. It once again is designated a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). China’s ‘war on religion’ expanded this year, with horrifying abuses targeting the Uyghur Muslims and more restrictions on Christians, Tibetan Buddhists, and Falun Gong practitioners. How China treats religion will determine the country’s future prosperity and stability, as religious adherence grows despite repression. It is in the interest of the U.S. to raise religious freedom concerns as only the U.S. has the economic and political clout to avoid the type of economic retaliation the Chinese government uses to coerce silence about its human rights abuses.” Vietnam: “Vietnam too often gets a free pass on human rights. There are religious prisoners in Vietnam, harassment of independent religious groups continues, and a new law on religion allows the Vietnamese government more control over religious groups—how is Vietnam not designated by the State Department as a Country of Particular Concern? This designation worked in the past to improve conditions for Vietnamese religious groups and it will work again because the Vietnamese government needs U.S. trade and security cooperation.” Iraq: “Christians and Yazidis were targeted for genocide by ISIS starting in 2014. Today they are at risk of being forced to leave their ancient homelands unless the United States and others start giving them direct aid soon. I have received reports from the ground that promised U.S. assistance is not yet reaching them as it should. What the Administration does now may determine whether ISIS erases these communities or is denied a propaganda and recruiting victory.” Anti-Semitism: “This report is filled with examples of anti-Semitic attacks, discrimination, and rhetoric—especially in Europe. Yet, we still await the appointment of a Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism. My provisions in the Global Anti-Semitism Act of 2004 created and mandated the position of Special Envoy to lead our fight against this persistent, unique hatred. The newly-sworn-in Secretary Pompeo promised me at a recent hearing that he will appoint someone soon and I look forward to an announcement of that appointment.” Turkey: “The government of Turkey continues to use the weight of the state to crack down on religious freedom as part of its broader assault on the rule of law. For more than two years the Turkish government has held Pastor Andrew Brunson, an American citizen, hostage. The United States must hold the perpetrators of this injustice accountable with targeted sanctions.” Nigeria: “Congress is watching the situation in Nigeria with growing concern, as the Nigerian government there appears too often to be indifferent to attacks by Fulani herdsmen on predominantly Christian farmers. The confluence of religious, ethnic, economic and political tensions is only likely to be exacerbated in the lead-up to elections next year unless President Muhammadu Buhari speaks out with a clear voice condemning the herdsmen attacks. We grieve with the families of those killed, including those of two priests and 17 worshippers who were buried just last week following an attack by herdsmen in Benue state in April.”

Politics2023 Presidency: Igbos Will Gang-up Against Orji Kalu, Primate Ayodele by 2020Experience(op): 9:36am On Sep 07, 2020
Primate Ayodele of the Inri Evangelical Spiritual Church, Lagos has released a very controversial prophecy on what will unfold during the 2023 presidential election.

Ayodele on Sunday, September 6, declared that although Orji Uzor Kalu has the stamina to emerge the flagbearer for the southeast, he will not make it eventually.

The famous cleric said that some prominent persons in the southeast will rise and gang-up against the former Abia governor in his bid to become the next president of Nigeria.

He said: "The only man who could have fought for the Igbo people is Orji Uzor- Kalu. But the Igbo people will gang up against him. He has the stamina; that is if they will give it to the Igbo."

Going further, Ayodele said that he foresees the Igbos being rubbished in the 2023 election, Nigerian Tribune reports.

He warned the former Senate deputy president, Ike Ekweremadu not to run for the office of the vice president.

The cleric stated: "Ike Ekweremadu must not vie for the office of vice president. He should go for something else. The Igbo people are their problem. Except they are ready to turn things around, the Igbo man will not be president."

The former chief whip in the Senate told journalists in Umuahia, the state's capital, that if granted the opportunity to take over the presidential seat, he will build a 20th-century economy for the country.

The senator said: “Yes, if you give me the presidency, why not, I will take. I am capable of doing the job.

Stressing his desire to not only return to the Senate, Kalu categorically said: "...if the people of Nigeria want me to be president, they will show the hand. I can do the job. I can build a 20th-century economy for our people.”

However, Kalu pointed out that not many persons are capable of doing the job and that for him, he is more preoccupied on developing his constituency.
