Earlier this week I collated a list of six great people who died for love. But after great scrutining I have the list of top three great men and women who died for love(Fiction and non-fiction).
1. Jesus Christ
“Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” ( Ephesians 5:25).
Jesus died for the church. But for Jesus the church is not an institution like Yale University or Apple or The United Way, where the corporation has the brand value and the people who populate it are an anonymous (and largely replaceable) mass, except for a few VIPs. Jesus did not die for an institution. He died for individuals.
The church isn’t even a republic like The United States of America. Jesus didn’t die for a republic. He died for persons.
Jesus died for persons with names, faces, personalities, disabilities, histories, and sins. He did that because he loveseach person. Every sin Jesus bore on the cross had a name attached. They were real thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions. It was real anger, lust, evil motives, and murders. Some of these sins were yours. Some were mine.
2. Romeo and Juliet.
Generally regarded as the greatest romance in the English language,Romeo and Julietis actually Shakespeare's case study of what results when two unformed-maladjusted youths meet at vulnerable points in their lives and are then forcibly separated -- addiction, withdrawal, suicide.
The play, of course, ends with the lovers killing themselves.Romeo and Julietis suffused with death imagery and violence. But, contrary to the popular image that their warring families are the source of this violence, it stems from the lovers themselves, and is directed at themselves.
The play opens with Romeo Montague disconsolate over his lost paramour, Rosaline. He and his friends decide to surreptitiously attend a party thrown by his family's enemy, Capulet, in hopes of seeing Rosaline. Romeo is not in a good mood -- in a word, he is suicidal and expects to "expire the term of a despised life." Instead, he spies Juliet at the party, with whom he falls in love on the spot.
3. Saint Valentine
St. Valentine was a physician and a priest, perhaps even a bishop, in Rome. During his time, the Emperor Claudius the Goth sought to raise a large army. He felt that single men would make better soldiers. St. Valentine secretly married people who were forbidden to wed under Roman law.
Valentine was arrested for his “misdeeds,” imprisoned, and beheaded on February 14.
He was buried on Rome's Flaminian Way, and a basilica was erected there in 350.
The Two Valentines
It seems there was another Roman named Valentine who died on the same day. This man was also a priest and was martyred in Terni, some 60 miles from Rome. This Valentine confessed his faith before the emperor, declaring that the gods Jupiter and Mercury were “shameless and contemptible characters.” While he was in prison, Valentine befriended the blind daughter of his jailer. He cured her and converted his captor to Christianity. When the emperor heard about his deeds, he had Valentine beaten and beheaded. It is now thought that the two Valentines may have been the same man — taken from one city where he was imprisoned, to the other where he was executed.
