The Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company and Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, with combined capacity of 235,000 barrels per day, produced nothing in September, the Nigerian National Petroleum Resources has said.

With an opening stock of 253.26 thousand metric tonnes, total crude oil available for processing was 253.26 thousand mt, out of which 74.64 thousand metric tonnes was processed by the Port Harcourt Refining Company, the corporation said in its latest monthly report.

“This month (September), zero (0.00) mt of dry crude oil, condensate and slop was received by the three refineries, KRPC, PHRC and WRPC. The respective average capacity utilisation during the month was 0.00 per cent, 8.77 per cent and 0.00 per cent for KRPC, PHRC and WRPC respectively,” according to the report.

The Deputy Executive Director, Africa Network for Environmental and Economic Justice, Mr. Leo Atakpu, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said, “Refineries are in comatose state such that we have to be importing fuel. It is a shame that we are importing petrol and others.

“The political leadership has not done anything pointedly to address this issue over the years. Though it did not start with this administration, but we all expected it to take drastic steps to bring about positive change such that the people will begin to feel the impact,” he said.

In August, output from the country’s refineries dropped to 294,000 mt as they operated at an average of 16 per cent of their combined nameplate capacity of 445,000 barrels per day. The respective average capacity utilisation for KRPC, PHRC and WRPC during the month was 21.68 per cent, 15.79 per cent and 10.94 per cent respectively.

In July, when the refineries operated at 22 per cent of their installed capacity, output was 334,000 mt. The average capacity utilisation for KRPC, PHRC and WRPC in the month was 19.40 per cent, 0.00 per cent and 46.71 per cent, respectively.

In June, the refineries operated at 10 per cent of their installed capacity, with average capacity utilisation of 0.00 per cent, 17.96 per cent and 13.44 per cent respectively.

The country’s refineries have long been operating well below installed capacity as they are in different states of disrepair. They operated at an average of 31.1 per cent capacity in 2012, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest crude oil producer, is arguably the biggest importer of refined petroleum products on the continent, creating a lucrative market for refiners in the United States, Europe and other African countries such as Cameroun and Cote d’Ivoire

how do you expect the place to work?

Village boys from the Niger Delta are operating hundreds of refineries, which the Fulani led JTF are destroying, yet the overfed and overpaid incompetent NNPC workers cannot produce a drop of petrol!

Like Tompolo (Government) who are bunkering with GEJ's license in NIMASA abi?

But they're not buying private jets and warships in Kaduna.

This New Years speech sounded dead to me as if the guy is foreseeing his exit...

No plans for Power, Refineries and Security.
He seemed bent on protecting his legacy. Claiming performance bogus performance when he's gone.

These APC people won't let the president rest. Is refinery his responsibility? Should he carry spanner to go and fix them, when all night he is using torchlight to search for our Chibok girls? And dont go blaming dizzyannie because they are relations. He is trying, but it is boko haram that has vandalised the refineries. His enemies are disturbing him so he cannot work.

So the refineries are not the President's responsibility?

Your Nigerian citizenship needs to be withdrawn. You will do better as with the Kalahari bushmen or with the pygmies, far from the sphere of government influence

What is story for the gods here?. We are not selling crude oil and the refineries that we have on ground to process them are not working.

So we are importing out of our scarce resources a product that we should be manufacturing to reduce spending the money we are currently spending to import the same finished products in a context where proceeds from the raw material we were exporting was mainly used to buy that same finished product that we are now importing but should have been exporting.

If all the above seems confusing to you, just put a man like Jonathan at the head of any family, business, local governments, state or country and everything will confuse you.

Actually you are right. The refineries are not the Presidents's primary responsibility. His responsibilities are defence, security, unifying the country, symbolising our collective sovereignty and projecting Nigeria's strength and power. In these responsibilities, he himself has admitted that he has FAILED. So I dont really know how his supporters are able to sleep at night. Railways, airports and day to day mangement of the economy are also not his responsibility but supporters give him credit for a few of the modest (pedestrian) achievements recorded there but are alsways quick to say refineries are not his responsibility. I have even heard one guy saying, that only army Generals should be held responsible for all the failures against BokoHaram and not the President. Almost every attempt to defend Jonathan has always had an element related to either the demotion of his office or a subtle unwitting insult on his personality.

Government wants to sell the refineries therefore they have stopped supplying them with crude oil. How can they produce without crude? The refineries should be privatised but not sold to criminals like the electricity companies.

The litany of excuses from government is just depressing. Do remember that we spend over 1 trillion on fuel subsidy, because we have no working refineries. And in 4yrs not one has been repaired or built because fuel importation is the easiest scam. Meanwhile they celebrate dizzyannie becoming chair of opec when we are in the position of being the only major member that cannot refine crude oil for our local consumption. So even the derivatives of refining that the plastics or fertiliser industry could use are also imported. Fani Kayode is facing trial on EFCC charges, Ubah of TAN is facing trial on EFCC corruption charges, Kashamu is accused by Obasanjo of being involved in the drug trade and these are the people Jonathan clings to? How can we tell our children not to steal when the president is ready to pardon and embrace you in public? I am beyond disgusted with Jonathan and his gang. I have protected my pvc pass my atm card sef.

We waste hard earned foreign exchange because we lack functional refineries.
