Kenya Withdrawals all Troops from South Sudan Kenya has rejected the dismissal of Lt-Gen Johnson Ondieki as the Commander of the UN peacekeeping force in South Sudan and announced it was pulling out its contingent. In a terse statement issued Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the UN of acting without discussions with Nairobi in sacking the commander who only took the job in May. “The process leading to this unfortunate decision not only lacked transparency but did not involve any formal consultation with the Government of Kenya. This demonstrates complete disregard of our key role and responsibility in South Sudan,” the Ministry said in a statement. An investigation On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon sacked Lt-Gen Lt Gen Johnson Mogoa Kimani Ondieki as the Commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) forces, after an investigation revealed he had failed to protect civilians during the violence in Juba in July. But the Kenyan government disagreed, saying the responsibility to protect civilians could not be borne by an individual, given the complex nature of the conflict. The decision irked Nairobi so much it has announced it will no longer contribute to South Sudan’s peace process and will be pulling out the 1,229 troops it sent to South Sudan under the UN, citing “disrespect” from the global agency. A flexible position Pulling out of the South Sudan peace process could be significant as Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta is the patron of the peace agreement signed last year between President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar. Indeed, most of the warring leaders live in Nairobi. On Wednesday, it also emerged that a flexible position by South Sudan mediators to allow rebels to set their camp near a UN base in the country became the spark that cost the Kenyan commander his job. But Lt-Gen Ondieki, who Wednesday travelled back to Nairobi to meet with President Kenyatta, may have been a victim of flawed structures both within the Mission itself and the power sharing arrangement that allowed Dr Machar to return to government. As reported by Aggrey Mutambo for The EastAfrican |

Ugandan Missile Fabricator Wants to Join Army A 28-year-old man in Hoima, who is fabricating a device similar to a missile, wants to join the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). Mr Anatoli Kiiza, a resident of Kiryangobe village in Kitoba Sub-county, told Daily Monitor that he wants to join a department in the army charged with manufacturing arms. “When I first developed the idea, I wanted to operate independently but I have since realised that I can get more support and materials if I am part of the army,” Mr Kiiza said on Monday. The army has expressed willingness to support him. The UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, said innovation for promotion of peace and stability was welcome. “Through our office, we can look at what he is doing and support his work,” Lt Col Ankunda told Daily Monitor. He said Mr Kiiza could go to UPDF offices where he can be guided to the relevant department. Last week, Mr Kiiza asked government to authorise him to test his locally-made missile. Mr Kiiza previously made attempts to fabricate a machine similar to a missile in June 2012 but police arrested him. After undergoing numerous interrogations, he was released without being prosecuted Mr Kiiza said despite being arrested seven times since 2012, he has never abandoned his weapon-making ambitions. “I am patriotic. I wish to make a significant contribution to Uganda’s security through manufacturing weapons,” he said. Mr Kiiza claimed to have researched on Internet how missiles are made in countries such as USA, China and North Korea. He claims that Uganda can save money which it spends on buying weapons if innovative people like him are supported to manufacture weapons, adding that it should create an enabling environment for him to showcase his indigenous skills. Mr Kiiza said his love for weapons manufacturing can be traced to his childhood when he assembled a homemade bomb which exploded and injured his right leg. According to his mother, Ms Margret Biferamunda, Kiiza enrolled for education at Kitoba Primary School but dropped out of school before reaching P7. However, Mr Kiiza claims he completed Senior Six at Nyamitanga SS in 2009. As reported by Francis Mugerwa for The Monitor |

Rwanda Names French Officers Accused of Aiding Genocide in 1994 Rwanda has released a list of 22 senior French army officers it says knowingly aided the planning and execution of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis. The list released by the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG) is likely to escalate the tiff between Kigali and Paris, in the wake of the reopening of investigations by France into the shooting down of a plane carrying President Juvenal Habyarimana. The move to revive the probe has angered Rwanda, which has threatened to sever diplomatic ties with Paris. In a detailed report issued Monday, CNLG named 22 senior French officers who were operating in Rwanda at the time of the genocide and reportedly had a direct hand in the massacre. CNLG further says the French military officers must be charged. “French actors were involved in the genocide both as perpetrators and accomplices, and do not want their acts to be known despite their proofs. “This is the biggest cause explaining the persistent refusal of the French authorities to validate the ballistic investigation by French experts in Rwanda in 2010 which indicated that missiles were fired from Kanombe military barracks,” the report says. The French officers include Generals Jacques Lanxade, Christian Quesnot, Jean-Pierre Huchon, Jean-Claude Lafourcade; Colonels Gilbert Canovas, Jacques Rosier, Didier Tauzin, René Galinié and Bernard Cussac. Others are Colonels Dominique Delort, Jacques Hogard, Jacques Rosier, Patrice Sartre, and Lieutenant Colonels Michel Robardey, Jean-Jacques Maurin and Eric De Stabenrath. More officers include Captains Etienne Joubert, Paul Barril and Commanders Grégoire De Saint Quentin, Denis Roux and Marin Gillier, all of whom Kigali says there is enough evidence to show that French officers and politicians committed very serious crimes in Rwanda. Rwanda and France continue to trade accusations over the events that led up to the genocide, with Kigali maintaining that the French, who were the main allies of President Habyarimana’s government, abetted the killings. The two countries also disagree on who downed the plane, which is perceived to have triggered the killings. French judges in 2012 appeared to support the view that Hutu extremists downed the plane, seemingly settling the six-year diplomatic standoff. 1 Like |

MR LTGEN You repeatedly go off half cocked, on obtuse tangents mate... Leave all these your stories... I have no bitterness against Buhari despite his calling ALL of us Nigerians living abroad criminals. But i will not accept this level of incompetence, hypocrisy and grand larceny by these leaders who have completely hypnotized certain sections of the populace like you. We will praise the leadership and army when they do good, BUT we will hold them accountable where they falter. NOT this a$$-kissing crap you have become a specialist in. Yes, we know you very well from your twitter page. I am done arguing with you.

That was an assassination by BHT. The tank battalion CO was a pain to them in many ways. I just hope that NA can fill the void. Col. Ali famously drove T72 right into BHT enclaves with excellent tact. |

Katyusha: Exactly why we need to keep documenting the battlefield exploits. We need to retrain and quickly expose young, fearless officers in order to be able to fill positions that such heroes as colonel Muhammed Ali left behind. RIP to the fallen hero. You died for a good cause. 1 Like 1 Share |
