Is there anyway Nigeria can go ahead and by from Russia ?

Some countries like Egypt, Morocco,Belarus, Algeria and some Asians countries can still go ahead and buy military hardware without minding uncle's sam sanctions.

There's no way we can buy anything from Russia that will aide or has the potential to aide Russian campaign in Ukraine.

The Americans will wreck Nigeria and it will not be pretty for us. I don't see any military equipment Egypt, Morocco even Algeria are buying from Russia. Morocco is a major ally of the US in North Africa. They don't usually buy equipment from Russia.

Why not the J-10, For me over-reliance on western hardware is enough headache.

Yes, the J-10 is another good option.

While I agree over-reliance on Western hardware is problematic, we can't buy from Russia.

You will see that we're currently pivoting to Turkey, but Turkish hardware is not really Turkish, it's made primarily from western parts.

You don't understand my comment.

I'm saying to you the T-129 is as susceptible to sanctions as the AH-1Z.

The T-129 depends heavily on American parts, it's engine, the core of the helicopter is American.
I admitted in my original post that the Atak is not free from the long hands of the US but it has less strings attached e.g weapons suites, mission computers.

I can almost imagine some daft Senator hearing a sensational CNN talking about a crisis in Plateau and fiam our attack capabilities are gone because that Senator goes on Wikipedia and sees the US flag under the manufacturer column of our arsenal.

The Pakistanis will either wait for the non-US engined TAI ATAK 2 heavy-class attack chopper or simply buy Chinese.
The Chinese Z10 failed trials with Pak. They'd have to wait, or just clean up their acts

The onus falls on us to use our American made military equipment in the most compliant manner, this is why the military has invested heavily in ISR capabilities.

We will not have problems with our American assets if we admit errors where they happen and carry out investigations like when are now currently doing.

Even Israel is under pressure using American equipment, not to talk of Nigeria.

This is the AKPWS. It's not an ATGM but it's effective against light armoured vehicles like the M113 and light armoured tanks.

Those arseholes cleaning up their act? grin grin grin
The Z10 failed, which is why for about 18 months now, they've been trying out the Z10ME with the more powerful WZ-9G 1200 kW engine.
As for waiting, I'm not sure they would: ATAK 2's engine is a joint Turk-Ukraine development, and with the Ukrainians rather busy with other things nowadays, it's anybody's guess when even a prototype takes to the sky.

why can't we buy from russia their equipment are cost effective and we can easily maintain them compared to what we have been buying from west. Another thing is that the west will not sell their latest equipment to us,we call only buy old equipment from. The helicopters Nigeria recently bought each one can get us like two Russian alligator

There are sanctions preventing Nigeria from buying Russian military equipment, there was CAATSA before the war in Ukraine and I'm positive these have been strengthened.

The Nigerian economy depends heavily on American expertise, there are also deep cultural ties, the Americans will wreck Nigeria if we procure military equipment from Russia, especially now.

The T-129 is an excellent aircraft, so is the AH-1Z. While it will make logistical sense to buy a single type, Ukraine currently use multiple equipment types and have been able to maintain all of them despite the full blown war with Russia.

Ok you're right about the sanctions, but I'd argue that most of them will not be implemented. The Executive government and Congress are usually at loggerheads on things like this. Currently they're trying to raise the threshold of what can be sold without notifying congress.

Secondly, eastern europe have been using soviet equipment for a long while now, and they have a stronger indigenous industry, so they can easily maintain them all. Ukraine even manufactures aircrafts.

what about countries like Egypt and especially Alageria who has over relied on Russian military equipment. what will be there choices for maintenance and further military procurement moving forward. Nigeria just loves following some developed countries blindly in name of democracy.

Despite the sanctions some African countries are still patronising Russian military equipments; checkout these article https://www.timesaerospace.aero/features/defence/russia-still-up-in-arms-despite-ukraine-war

22 soldiers and others were ambushed and killed in a community in Delta State.

Maj shafa
Maj obi
Capt zakari
Lt col AH Ali
And some soldiers.

Pandemonium in the creeks as 22 military men on rescue mission to Okuama community in Ughelli South local government area, Delta State, who were reportedly ambushed and taken unawares by armed men and mercenaries of the community on Wednesday have been confirmed killed.

It would be recalled that, Wednesday this week, the Bomadi Division of the JTF led by Maj. Jaffa embarked on a rescue mission to Okuama community to free a kidnapped youth, Mr Anthony Aboh, an indigene of neighbouring Okoloba community in Bomadi Local Government Area, who was abducted over the lingering land dispute between the two communities.

A civilian source from the military team said, the commander and his men were taken unaware while on their way back to the waterfront after a deadlocked round-table discussion in the Okuama community hall over the kidnapped youth.

The source reiterated, "We were coming back to our boats after the unfruitful discussion to release the kidnapped victim of Okoloba community. Suddenly, there were rains of bullets coming from all directions and some of us managed to escape. Many people were killed during the ambush, including a former honourable member from Okoloba community, who reported the matter to the JTF.

"But, the commander and other officers were held hostage and taken to an unknown destination towards the creek opposite the community", he said.

The source revealed that, twenty-two military men had been comfirmed dead at Okuama community and among them are one Lt coloniel, 2 majors, One Captain and eighteen soldiers.

Meanwhile, the lifeless body of the kidnapped youth, Mr Anthony Aboh, had been recovered floating on River Forcados.

Another source from Okoloba community said, "We found the lifeless body of Mr Anthony Aboh floating on River Forcados near Ayakoromo community, and like other victims, he was blindfolded with hands tied behind his back.

The Story of Lt Col AH Ali, 4 Commanders, 12 soldiers who  died in the hands of those they are protecting

By: Zagazola Makama

Indeed, Life's interplay of twists and turns, ups and downs, good and bad times, cold and hot seasons, humble and arrogant lifestyles, wade our souls into sweet or bitter ends.

Life is vanity, the holy book says. Molded out of clay and there we shall all return, dust to dust and nothing left but the memories of good or bad moments we created while alive.

In my mind's eye, I see nothing but vanity in all the powers, authorities, egos, hatred, bitterness, wickedness, wealth and riches that we pursue, acquire and revel in during our earthly race. One unifying moment and deepest mystery that defies all - high and mighty, rich and poor, strong and weak, kind or wicked - is death.

It encroaches unexpectedly but surely without fear of any status or position. My heart bleeds.

Nigerians and indeed the entire world have often heard or read about the horrifying attacks on Nigerians or Nigerians troops by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in the northeast region, but they have rarely heard or read about an attack on the Nigerian troops orchestrated by members of a community on Nigerian troops who were  deployed to protect them.

The sordid event that took place in Bomadi Local Government of Delta State on March 14 2024, will forever tug at the heart. It was the story of how a community mobilized its youths to launch an unprovoked attack on troops of 181 Amphibious Batallion of the Nigerian Army, who are stationed in the area.

The troops had gone to broker a peace between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State who were having communal crises. It was reported that the team led by the Commanding officer, Lt. Col. Ali, came under heavy attack by some youths in the community, leading to his death and that of two Majors, one Captain and 12 Soldiers.

Shortly after the attack, the whole community deserted the area, leaving their homes and properties.

It however, remained unknown the reason behind such senseless, inexplicable and unprovoked attacks on the troops by those whom they were on ground to protect.

The story of the hard-fighting, ever-focused, result-oriented Lt Col Ali has not been told before now.

An officer of great courage, focus and determination with an uncompromising disposition, Lt Col Ali’s article of faith as a leader of his troops is the encouragement to be courageous in operations and to ensure that successes are achieved while all assigned tasks are accomplished.

Taken on the strength of 198 Special Forces Battalion on the 6th of October, 2020, Lt Col Ali is acclaimed for his commendable sense of responsibility in training, operation, administration and welfare of his troops.

His success-oriented style of command has always been his guiding philosophy while leading his unit in various successful clearance operations in the Northeast and down to the North Central region where he has operated.
On 30 July 2021, Lt Col Ali led his troops within the Jaji axis at Malum Forest and cleared bandits from their hideout at Dunk, Rugan, Fringin. In that operation, about 4 bandits were killed while a number of AK 47, Magazines, assorted ammunition and communication radios were recovered. He also brilliantly conducted clearance operations at Rujana and cleared Kuso high ground in Kaduna State. Moving over to Niger State, he cleared a number of bandit enclaves and stabilized the troubled Rafin Local Government area.

The  team's act of bravery and commitment  influenced the defeat of the terrorists in the axis of  Kuriga, Manini Chikun, Pole Wire, Birnin Gwari, Ungwan Namama, Kwalba, Rafin Dawa Dende,Ungwan Madaki, Buruku, Udawa,  Doka, Maganda, Dogon Dawa, Sabon Layi-Kuriga-Maganda-Farin Ruwa, Sabon Birni, Kuyelo,Farin Ruwa, Damba to Kangon Kadi, Labi,Udawa river Apewohe, Dakwala and Kunai among others.

Along with his comrades in arms, Lt Col AH Ali has performed credibly well with courage and exceptional bravery, gallantly, aggressiveness with high professionalism in the face of danger while imparting same qualities to his officers and men under command. He is disciplined, highly committed, dogged and dedicated to duty, exceptional qualities that have continued to yield the overall successes which his unit have recorded.

Having completed his tour of duty at the North East, Lt Col Ali was redeployed to 181 Amphibious Batallion Division of the Nigerian Army, where he finally paid the supreme price.

A thorough-bred infantry officer, Lt Col Abdullahi Hassan Ali approaches military duties with diligence, patriotism and a sense of professionalism.

He was known for maintaining constant checks on all administrative issues and ensuring regimentation while ensuring that welfare of his officers and soldiers are top priority. He was indeed a result-oriented gallant officer worth celebrating.

I am deeply saddened by the news of your passing. Your unwavering dedication and bravery in the face of adversity have left an indelible mark on all those who knew you. Your sacrifice in the pursuit of peace and security for Nigeria will never be forgotten.

Although you are no longer with us, your legacy as a hero and a defender of peace will live on. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. May the Almighty grant you eternal peace and grant your loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

Rest in peace, Lieutenant Colonel Ali and others.  You will always be remembered as a true heroes.

why can't we buy from russia their equipment are cost effective and we can easily maintain them compared to what we have been buying from west. Another thing is that the west will not sell their latest equipment to us,we call only buy old equipment from. The helicopters Nigeria recently bought each one can get us like two Russian alligator

I consider the KA-52 to be arguably the world's best Attack Helicopter, certainly the world's most survivable Attack Helicopter.

However Russian helicopters are not cheap, Russian aircrafts are not cheap either.

American defence deals usually come with maintenance, infrastructure, weaponry, training, spares and the hardware as full cycle proposals.

It's not really the same with Russian aircrafts as customers can choose to buy Russian aircrafts with weaponry alone without related infrastructure.

The advantage the Russians have is you can use their equipment any how you like with no strings attached, Russian hardware is also very survivable. At least the T-90M, SU-25, KA-52, SU-34 and Lancet have all proven this in combat.

It's true that Nigeria might not be able to buy the F-35 from America, however the Americans have sold us the AH-1Z which is a state of the art aircraft. We can also buy the F-16V from the US if we request for it.

The fact of the matter is we wouldn't be able to buy Russian military equipment today, while I agree it makes more sense to buy 18 x units of the T-129 over 6 units T-129 and 12 x units AH-1Z it's important that we diversify our assets.

Why doesn't the Nigerian army pivot towards purchasing IFVs?

Like we've seen in the war in Ukraine, while Tanks are super important IFVs are crucial, perhaps more crucial than Tanks.

The concept of mechanised infantry of NA has always been odd to me.

I admit I don't know everything about NA doctrine but I think Mech Inf here means Tracked APC/MRAPs+12.7/14.5mm guns.

And the IFVs (or should I say AFV) e.g the FV107, Shilka are part of Armour

I dont see the NA investing its resources in IFV/AFV with the current sanctions on Russia, although China makes affordable vehicles anyways.

Am not saying Russia has been a major supplier of MBT/IFV to NA, they produced affordable equipment mostly for developing nations and your saw I mentioned china has other options too.

Are you suggesting the NA should go for western/European equipments that are way too expensive for a struggling army.

I thought we were beyond this infantile nonsense of compiling fantasy shopping lists! Russian, Chinese, western...all meaningless without a clearly defined Mech Inf doctrine.

Brazil and Turkey for example have been suppliers to NA.

If NA can go as far as South Korea to buy APCs I think NA just doesn't prioritise IFVs as we want
