So where are those that have criticized the use of the military to provide security for this election.

Go and look at the average salary of elected officers....and you will see why people are busy playing with fire in this election.

Even when there were soldiers...there was violence.

The problem with elected office in Nigeria is that too many people see it as avenue for free money.....rather than avenue for service. And we Nigerians excuse such behaviour.

This was the purpose of GEJ's visit to Lagos on Thursday, to organize violence prone idio.ts to disrupt what would have been a peaceful process. Anyway, his era of impunity is coming to an end.

this is what happens when those fools of lawmakers called for the ban of soldiers in manning polling units for fear of election rigging. which one is worse now? where u av thugs stealing ballot boxes anyhow and shooting at people just because theres no one to stop them. we got daft bunch of lawyers and judges in nigeria. they dont see beyond their blocked nostrils. if they hadnt accepted d banning of soldiers at polling units we wont be aving the situation of thugs aving a field day in most parts of the country.

You can put a battalion of soldiers at every polling unit....and the lure of billions of naira to spend will still lead to violence.

The trouble here is not the lack of the army....the trouble is Nigerians.

And why can't the police provide adequate security? Thanks to chronic decades of underfunding.....which did not improve under 16 glorious years of PDP transformation (as evidenced by the Police College Ikeja fiasco)..the Police is severely hamstrung. And some of you people will call for state Police....when the Federal Govt cannot fund the NPF properly...so how will states fund police? And besides....do we need the Army when we have police? Why can't you Nigerians put force on your lawmakers to make the NPF better?

Best we deal with the big elephant in the room.....the underfunding of the NPF.

Poor sentence construction, shaking my head for some post on Nairaland.

Oga Seun, please can we introduce basic proficiency test in English for all these new members especially those from post-March 28 presidential elections undecided.

It has nothing to do with GEJ.
Election violence has been there since June 12, 1993
It was there during OBJ's time.
Let's see how GMB handles it
l believe security will improve under him but l don't believe there will not be election violence under him

why fund npf dats full of drunks and illiterates. until having a university degree becomes the criteria for being enlisted in npf derz no need to fund it. y fund a unit that lacks discipline? or is it d same set of illiterates dat will be taught how to behave? when theres no one to monitor them. talkn of npf dont forget abt d menace of SARS, is it dose kind of animals dat should be funded?

That is the reason why you will have issues with your security.

The Nigerian Police force is the force that is empowered by law to play a big role in the internal security of this country.

And it does have a lot of issues with funding and training. And standards.

We can be of help to the Police. By agitating for increased funding for the Police. By getting more funds for continuous retraining and training. By establishing good forensic labs. By the use of techology...eg CCTV. By improving rehab for criminals and young offenders. By making sure that the Police have the equipment(not just guns) that they need to do their job.

And FYI....not all Police are illiterates. And isn't the Army made up of some of the same people you call illiterates.?And doesn't the Army do worse than the Police?

And have you seen our prisons. Do you know that 85% of prisoners in our jails are awaiting trial.? Do you know that there aren't enough judges, and lawyers to handle such cases?

And how is society.? We call the man who sleeps around a champion. Meanwhile...his children are suffering. And some of them turn to crime. We vote for politicians who refuse to industrialize our society...and keep us dependent on oil. And as a result...millions are unemployed...and lots of potential criminals are born.

The NPF is bad because the Nigerian Society is not working. Your average police man needs the society to work well so that he can do his job well. And it starts by making our political elite realise that we voted them in to do a job....not enjoy oil money.

P.S---in case you think that I was paid by the NPF to write this....I was not. I too have suffered inconveniences from the Police. But then again....if everything was working fine in this country.....we probably would have the Police for friends...not enemies.

P.S 2....Next time you think the Police isn't your friend...try calling a th./ug. grin

I dont think elections durin obj's time was this bad
Then you were either a kid or not resident in Nigeria then. Obj's tenure was the beginning of do or die politics. In connivance with Maurice iwu, electoral magic was performed. An obscure party (PPA) won in IMO when virtually no election held there then. It's like KOWA winning a state election with an unknown flag bearer because the president didn't want a particular major contender to win.
