Well said! I must admit that ur text did carry weight. I don't know if you are the same person who argued that IS HE THE PRESIDENT, NBC etc? But if it is you then that mean u just contradict yourself. I agree with ur points above but we shouldn't forget that our so-called hero of FOI, President Jonathan also bar the press every now and then. One case been the barring of the press from his meeting with the Obas b4 election. Buhari is a public figure as U said, but the right to allow the press to cover his event is still his. Same for our celebrities. A celebrity is a citizen like U and I. If a celebrity refused to talk to the press, it is his/her right. All the fans can do is shout DIS CELEB TOO DEY SHOW OFF. He (celeb) owe no one an apology.
Buhari is the president-elect and not the president and as such he doesn't have the power to send NBC after AIT but still has the right to ask them not to cover his event.
We should note that he didn't bar all the press in which case we the public will still have access to the information. He only bar AIT lest AIT try to use it for another smearing campaign. AIT already damaged its image and has a case to answer in any sane society. At least it broke the ethic code of Journalism. I won't be surprised if NBC goes after AIT once Buhari is sworn in. Many people will sure call it the new DECREE 4 whatever. But somethings are necessary to put us on the right path. USA has FOI but no company dare break business rules and ethics.
Because there is freedom of speech we all go about spreading ethnic and religious sentiment without thinking about where it might get us. If care is not taken, this FOI will be our undoing rather than a blessing.

This is a case of double standard.
Simply put, Buhari is not celebrated now because he is Buhari, but because he is the president-elect.

He is news, whether in private or in the public now, and the news should interest every well meaning Nigerian.

This is the beauty of democracy, and certainly their are collateral damage and of course casualty of electioneering.

Even in the US and Britain, even deeds of indecent photograph, or sexual molestation or wrong company can come to hurt any aspiring public figure in the future.

Given we are Nigerians, African and we should not forget what we are, but common,we all know those things aired whether sponsored or researched are facts in history.

The questions to ask is that:
Did Buhari not sentenced the woman to death: if eventually she died in custody was he held accountable or was the DPO or IG punished for such death?
His son's death i repeat is a NO GO AREA for the media....show some respect and humaneness.
Did he not gage the press?
Was he not accused of impropriety in the PTDF where he chaired and OBJ raise a committee to probe his tenure?
Whether acquitted of wrong doing or not is left for the report but it is a fact.

He GMB has recourse in law to seek redress in the court of law for defamation or libel but he can not say AIT should not cover His event or any one having to do with him for that matter for the period he holds power and/or when he is holding power in waiting except for public and national security reason.
And this of course AIT can challenge in court too, if they feel they have been unduly harassed or accused.

The best he could do, as you rightly said above is to ignore question from them or do not grant a one on one interview with them.



He has only succeeded in giving AIT unsolicited publicity.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that all accredited media organizations in the country, including the African Independent Television (AIT), are free to cover the activities of the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the incoming Buhari Administration will not discriminate against any media organization, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls.

It however enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.

”There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

”There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect,” APC said.
