Off course it does go sour!milk is proteinous.if egg that is proteinous can get rotten, how much more can breastmilk?...breastmilk gets sour easily compared to egg because the milk from the mammary glands in the breast react with certain enzymes in the breast.

Breast Milk in the breast does NOT go sour! Once out of the breast, yes it can if not stored properly. This is because breast milk is not stored, in the breast, but produced when needed, it's a reflex action like Pavlov 's dog reaction.

Not knowing about incidents does not mean it never happens. There's always an 'ah' moment when you learn about something which is a fact and has always been. You never knew and you now know. Einstein's discoveries were always there but became known after he discovered them.
Summary, never discard an observation until you can disprove it. Experiments and results can lead to its endorsement as a fact.

So far, I haven't done any experiments; I am an Industrial Chemist and I have other pressing interests.
However, from my little research I think it is a myth which is widely believed even beyond Africa.
Thanks so much for your input.

I know this conversation has been over 2 years now however as a new mum with a baby of 8 months, i started doing my research when something similar occurred to me.
I do believe wholeheartedly that myths should not be so generously relied upon without personal specific accounts. i for one never thought breast milk could go sour until it happened to me. I went back to work last week and since then i have noticed my daughter has been stooling. when the report from the nursery said she had stooled 3 times and upon getting home, her dad changed her twice and when i returned i changed her twice. my suspicion was roused but i had no concrete proof as none of the health visitors i had spoken to about going back to work had said my breast milk would go sour in the space of 8-10 hours of been away.
However in the past 2 days, when i have returned from work, she latches unto my breast as usual and at roughly 11.30pmish, she has a really watery stool. last night was worse as she threw up the entire content of her stomach (breast milk to be precise) and it smelt bad! she proceeded to have the same stool as the previous night.
Now this does not categorically prove that breast milk goes sour however i do believe there may be an element of truth with certain individuals with their babies. Perhaps if a mum does not produce as much milk, it is less likely to go sour or if the baby does not react to things easily. in my case, i do produce a lot of milk and foolishly should express whilst am at work, so maybe that's why mine goes sour or my baby may just react to things so easily.
Only time will tell with my case. In the time been, i will be going to see her health visitor and breast feeding specialists in order to shed more light on all this.
