Good day to the learned coordinators, meticulous jurist, fellow debaters, and the following spectators. My name is Sammyscholar, first representative of The Polytechnic Ibadan. I am taking the 'later' position of today's topic which says; 2015 General Election: A Reflection Of People's Will Or An Outcome Of Political Vendetta?

The most populous black nation in the world and the giant of Africa - Nigeria, has just, in recent times, made an unprecedented history in her polity. The outcome of her 2015 general election saw her main opposition party - ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC), took the baton of power, at the central, from the ruling party - PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP); who has been ruling the country since the transition of power from military government to civilian in 1999.

Whilst some say the outcome of the election is a reflection of the 'will' of people; some political pundits, analysts, and connoisseurs see it as an outcome of political vendetta (feud) between our Political parties - especially between the controversial PDP and APC (a party who almost half of its members are from the PDP - PDP's disgruntled members).

Truly and undoubtedly, if we look inward, in depth, and critically study the happenings in our political landscape since 1999 (especially from 2013) till date; we would clearly see and know that as events turned out in the 2015 general election (the presidential especially) was not consequent upon people's will but on vendetta politics.

Before I plunge into details, it is important that the key terms in the topic of discourse be expatiated to the understanding of a layman.

WILL; as used in this context, according to Oxford dictionary, is a mental faculty by which a person decides upon and controls his or her actions (not influenced to).

VENDETTA; according to online free dictionary, is a very long and violent fight between two families or groups. It is a series of acts done by someone over a long period of time to cause harm to a disliked person or group. It is an often prolonged series of retaliatory, vengeful, or hostile acts or exchange of such act.

Political Vendetta, hence, is a series of vengeance acts, feuds, and attacks, launched by one politician or political party against a political rival or a political-ally-turned-foe.

To begin with, before 2015 election, we have held three different elections after transition of power in 1999 - in 2003, 2007, and 2011. During the transition, people were full of hope and happiness knowing they would not be governed by men in khaki anymore but by the people they have elected with their own votes. However, fast forward couple of years later, people began to moan. Agitation began to take the place of happiness. Uproar and imbroglio became the order of the day. Series of debates ensued - all centered upon the juxtaposition of the gains of the newly birthed democracy against the jettisoned junta. People agreed that things had not fared better even under the civilian dispensation. The conspectus was that power had not been entrusted to the right persons. And as the beauty of democracy would have it; they are soon to have another general election.

The general election of 2003 came in earnest. Many political parties featured; giving Nigerians wide array of candidates to choose from. Of prominent among the parties were PDP (the ruling party), ANPP, AD et al. Hence, with the nature of issues on ground - the deteriorating state of people's wellbeing and the general down turn of the economy at that time; one would have expected to see people changing the status quo with their votes; one would have expected to see a new administration under new political platform taking the mantle from the ruling party. But nay! PDP won massively - virtually all political seats.

The same thing repeated itself in the two subsequent general elections - 2007 and 2011. Hence, what happens to people's 'will'? How come that despite the unbecoming state of the living conditions of people, they still, in every election, lend their credence to PDP? How does PDP get its way with Nigerians? Politics, as we all know, is a game of who gets what, when, and how. As long as PDP would remain in one accord, and would stay within the rule of the game; it would continue to get its way.

Situation began to change in 2013 however. things began to fall apart in the PDP camp - the rope that bound them into accord, and that has always ensure their success in every election, had come loose. Feud broke out. Tragedy struck, faction emanated, and enmity started. Consequently, five sitting governors - Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano state, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto state and Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state - defected from the party to APC, (PDP's arch-rival) with the backing of a former president and national leader of the party, Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo, who also had earlier been skimmed out of scheme of things in the PDP, and who would later tear his membership card publicly. And Lo and behold, the politics of vengeance began!

The PDP-purged-politicians-turned-APC-champions became instrumental and frontier in the APC change crusade. Strategic roles were delineated to them; knowing fully well that they know where the strengths and weaknesses of PDP lie. Mr. Chibuke Rotimi Amechi, a staunch supporter of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (who had fended for GEJ during the 2011 presidential election and the 2012 fuel subsidy removal saga) suddenly became his bitter foe. Amechi was appointed the grand commander of the opposition's presidential campaign team and his team left no stone un-turn in painting GEJ's administration and the PDP black at every opportunity. GEJ and PDP, at the other end of the spectrum also, did not hesitate in launching a swift attack on APC, using all apparatuses at their disposal. Nigerians, at the receiving end, were polarized along ethnic, religious, and even, region lines (as we could see in their voting pattern).

While playing the feud, APC made itself look as the defensive side, and was successful in influencing people's emotion and getting their sympathy votes. APC won the presidential seat and majority of governorship, senate and house of representative seats; but that did not go without Mr. Amechi and his counterpart from adamawa state, Mr. Nyako, receiving a political bluster. Amechi lost the executive structure of his state to PDP and Nyako was ousted in a civilian coup-de-tat by his state's PDP law makers.

So, what really mould the fate of the election; the 'will/voice' of the masses or the interplay of vendetta between our politicians/ political parties? Without mincing words; with the above analysis, it is crystal clear that the faith of the 2015 general election was not [in the real sense of it] determined by the 'will' of the masses, but by the forces of vendetta (vengeance) politics played by our politicians/ political parties between themselves. Thank you.

2015 General election: a reflection of the people's will or an outcome of political vendetta?

Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. Which is characterized by the voting process. Where people are allowed to choose their leaders.

Every free and fair election is a reflection of the will of the people.
The choice might not seem right to some certain people, but who are we to decide who/what is right for another?

Choose well. Your choice is brief, and yet endless. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Nigerians made a choice in the 2015 general election, a choice that history will never forget.

Good day honourable chairman, infallible panel of judges, ubiquitous moderators, gumptious cordinators, erudite Co-debaters and my ever well-grounded and genial audience. I'm Miracy a representative of the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University. I'm here to support the topic which states that "2015 General election is a reflection of the people's will and not an outcome of political vendetta "

An election according to the Hutchinson’s Encyclopedia, is the process of appointing or selecting persons to public offices or a political party to govern, by voting. It is indeed a vital political right of expression of choice. Election is at individual level, an inalienable opportunity and political expression of citizenship and at a collective level, an expression of sovereignty by which people determine their preferred policies according to the manifesto of competing persons or parties. Thus, the key element in election is “CHOICE” it is ultimately organized to enable the people of a determinate polis express their choice by voting for the candidate of their choice.

Elections are the central tool for measuring democracy, and the extent to which the electoral process produces the exact will of the people, is what indicates the thoroughness of democracy in a society. The concept of democratic National elections is one of the most important developments in human society. There is no doubt that the recent 2015 general elections was an expression of true democracy where Nigerians trooped out in millions to exercise their franchise . The Nigerian general election of 2015 was the 5th quadrennial election to be held since the end of military rule in 1999. Voters elected the President and members to the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The most revered incumbency power was demystified as the collective will of the people prevailed over it. The 2015 general elections offer INEC an ample chance to bring to bear its determination to conduct an acceptable general election, demonstrating its knowledge and competence which is a true reflection of the choices of the majority of the electorate

According to the available records it indicates that the polls elicited large voter turnouts across the country and the elections were largely peaceful and better organized than previous ones. Nigeria has made Africa proud as it has passed its biggest democratic test having the incumbent president voted out of power .Nigeria is happy to show the rest of Africa, for once, who the true “Giant of Africa” is.

Acknowledging the success of the election, election observation missions of the Commonwealth, the AU and ECOWAS unanimously agreed that the elections were peaceful, transparent and credible. The election observers particularly applauded Nigerian voters for their maturity, orderliness and commitment towards the success of the polls. The former Ghanaian President and Head of ECOWAS Election Observer Mission, John Kufuor, said that Nigeria’s feat with regard to the elections was a pride to Africa. “The Nigerian elections are a pride, not only to Nigerians, but also to West Africa and the whole of the African continent; we are all proud of the success of the Nigerian elections"he said.

The elections were first scheduled to be held on 14 February 2015. However, the electoral commission postponed it by six weeks to 28 March, mainly due to the poor distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, and also to curb ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in certain north-eastern states in the country. The election was extended to 29 March due to delays and technical problems with the biometric card readers . It was the most expensive election ever to be held on the African continent.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, who was the Chief Returning Officer for the presidential election, declared retired Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner after polling 15,424,921 votes defeating all other candidates. In the election, President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP garnered 12,853,162 votes to place second.

Also speaking, former Ghanaian President, Jerry Rawlings said in his congratulatory message to Buhari, “Nigerians have taken the lead in the rejection of corruption. The election result is a manifestation of the people’s resolve to confront corruption, dishonesty and exploitation.

The outcome of the 2015 general elections showed Nigeria’s capacity for self-renewal and the people’s desire to stay united in the pursuit of justice in a prosperous nation. The election defied all doomsday predictions as a result of the deeply rooted love above the pursuit of power in Nigerians' character . Nigerians have indicated their desire to stand together, to strengthen the democratic system.

Furthermore, former Ghanaian and Head, ECOWAS Election Observer Mission, John Kufuor, said that Nigeria’s feat with regard to the elections was a pride to Africa. “The Nigerian elections are a pride, not only to Nigerians, but also to West Africa and the whole of the African continent; we are all proud of the success of the Nigerian elections,’’ he said.. Indeed, the nation is rising and spirits are high.
Now, the politicians – both winners and losers – have the clear and direct obligation to support the national restoration that has begun to edify and enhance the collective well being of a one, united and indivisible Nigeria.

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not the President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country. - Franklin D. Roosevelt

Topic ; 2015 General election: a reflection of the people's will or an outcome of political vendetta

No doubt in it that this 2015 general elections came with many surprises. A surprise that humbled the mighty and produced new set of leaders who are relatively underdogs! The most revered incumbency power was demystified as the collective will of the people prevailed over it.

Former Conservative Leader and Premier of Nova Scotia, Robert Stanfield once said, "These are the people we elected and if we are not satisfied we should get new candidates. It is in our hands. It is our country. It is a very simplistic view that politicians are to blame for everything." This signifies the will of the people and the power they possess through their right.

With this I say, Good evening, the chairperson, accurate timekeeper, panel of judges, the moderators, co-debaters, Nairalanders' and its guests. My name is Sobaloju Israel(Microflux), a student of the Great Ife, Obafemi Awolowo University. Am here today to support the statement which states "2015 General elections: a reflection of the people's will." before I begin to serve my points I will like to expantiate better on the 2015 general elections. 2015 general elections has come and gone, but it left some marks and lesson which cannot be easily erased in Nigeria democracy story.

The Nigerian general election of 2015 was the 5th quadrennial election to be held since the end of military rule in 1999. Voters elected the President and members to the House of Representatives and the Senate. The former president, Goodluck Jonathan sought his second and final term. It was the most expensive election ever to be held on the African continent. Nigeria is the continent's most populous country, has its largest economy and is its leading oil producer. Opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari won the presidential election by more than 2.5 million votes. Former President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat on 31 March, barely before the results was announced. The election marks the first time an incumbent president has lost re-election in Nigeria. The President-elect was sworn-in on 29 May 2015.

The recent elections in Nigeria is credible compared to the 1993 election which saw M.K.O Abiola elected as the president, where fairness and credibility was the order of the day. Without mincing words, when election is credible, fair and transparent, the election is nothing, but purely the peoples' will. The credibility of the election was further strenghtened by the introduction of the permanent voter's card and the smart card reader.Other leaders in Nigeria have in the past prevailed at the ballot box, sometimes with emphatic victories, notwithstanding their apparent unpopularity.

Many politicians in Nigeria believe General Buhari, the new President-elect, would have won elections in 2007 but for massive, systematic and institutionalised rigging which was impossible in 2015 . Their use did have the effect of bolstering public confidence in the credibility of the elections. The use of the electronic card readers cut down on the possibility of voter fraud and also acted as a deterrent to discourage people from trying to vote multiple times or fraudulently. Ultimately, the use of the card readers was seen as a success and a step forward by many Nigerians in improving the credibility of elections as it has done.

However, before the elections, the former president of Nigeria and flag-bearer of the People's Democratic Party(PDP), Goodluck Jonathan, held different meetings with political leaders, traditional leaders, religious leaders. He also present a wonderful manifestoes which included the report of the national conference, he also stepped-up actions against insurgency in the latter part of his tenure, which recorded a huge success and also saw almost 300 abductees released. Despite this, the song in the mouth of an average Nigerian is "change" , which they really deserve. Their will seem unchangeable. Jonathan’s opponent, Muhammadu Buhari, campaigned principally on the promise of change, tapping into the sense of popular fatigue and disappointment associated generally with the People’s Democratic Party, which had won all four elections since the end of military rule in 1999, and in particular with five years of President Jonathan. It was a campaign as much about what Nigerians did not want, as what they did. Two events had come to symbolise the apparent impotence and inertia of the Jonathan administration, at home and abroad. These were the handling of the abduction of more than 200 school-girls from Chibok in April 2014, which spoke of a broader malaise in security and leadership; and allegations in 2013 by the then Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, that billions of dollars from oil earnings could not be accounted for, fuelling perceptions of a relaxed approach to corruption and governance. With this the people were furious at the way Jonathan administration handles corruption cases and security and termed him clueless.
On the whole, I must say, youths are the biggest actors and players here, because you told our leaders and the global world, you can fool some people all the time, but you can’t fool everybody at the same-time. You did this by telling our leaders, its no longer business as usual. Enough is enough! You called the shots and were determined to change the status quo no matter whose ox is gored. Now our leaders now truly know, they are accountable to the masses. They will learn to leave a legacy and work extremely hard as its been done in sane climes otherwise they will be shown the exit door. Probity and accountability will be our leaders watch word, as opposed to the non-chalant and lackadaisical attitude of our past leaders because we are now informed. Its pertinent to know that, if you are not informed, you are deformed, and once you are deformed, you can’t perform, because information leads to reformation and transformation. Nigerians especially the youths are now better informed and properly guided on the issues affecting them due to social media and bad leadership. Without fear of any contradiction, the election was nothing but the people's decision and the elected polticians must live by it or face the people's wrath.
Thanks for reading.

yes! Election is beutiful. It gives masses the opportunity to make their choices. But what do you say about politics? Can we talk about election without talking about the root - politics? Politics is game who get what, when and how. The interplay of politics between political parties, to a monumental extent, determines how election would go. 2015 general reflected a real outcome of political feud. If you will give a honest answer; if pdp had not become disarrayed there by giving APC the opportunity to woo it key members, would APC have won?

The 2015 general elections were relatively peaceful despite the fact that the former President was voted out of power, he still conceded defeat and we've not heard of any political crisis since the election... he believed that the people have made a choice and he has no option than to accept that choice.

If the former president who was a contestant on the election accepted the outcome as the will of the people, who are we to call the people's choice a vendetta?

let me remind you again (peradventured you have forgotten). 2015 General Elecction: a relection of people's will or an outcome of political vendetta? We cannot dazzle into this subject matter without visiting history. What led to what? What precipitated what? That is the crux of this topic of discuss. Was it the masses 'will' that mould the faith of the election or the vendetta politics between out political parties/politicians? It is the later of course!

I believe the reason why apc won the election is because the people came out massively to express their franchise without interference.... People were tired of Jonathan's administration, they were tired of been deceived... if Jonathan had perform well, i'm sure he would have been voted in again.
