Word!

You cannot be richer than your employer, neither do you become wealthy earning a salary.
I keep seeing this often. While the latter position is largely true, the former is not always the case. It depends on where you work and how well you are paid. Also remember that not all are gifted or trained to be entrepreneurs. There are salary earners that make more money monthly than some entrepreneurs make a year.
For example, in the financial sector in the UK, there are workers who earn over N300m equivalent in bonuses alone even though their salaries may be less than half that.Such a person may find it more rewarding working for someone than for himself. My point is people are different and have different purposes in life.

I disagree with you dear. Every business buys and sells something, whether it's a service or product. Banks, insurance companies, discount houses all sell something. Dangote, Nestle, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Samsung etc, all sell something.

Find something you can sell and throw everything at it!
u just shot urself in the foot. Kindly look at all the examples u mentioned and see if they aren't products created by ppl with technical skills? Why don't u give me an example of a trading company among ur examples? I am telling u that the only way to survive in todays world is to be productive and todays world productivity isn't about moving around trying to convince ppl to buy things u are selling produced by someone else. U left out the part where I said u should get trained and skilled in technical and vocational skills. If u are good in doing things ppl will pay for ur services but buying and selling isn't a marketable skill in todays world.

wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. I think u need to leave nigeria to appreciate the fact that nigeria is the easiest easiest easiest place to make money if you are skilled . Tell me ,what do u want to create or produce in uk or the developed countries which isn't there already?? But in nigeria ,the oppotunities are limitless. You guys don't know the oppotunities you are throwing away in nigeria. Believe me ,in 2years time you will remember what I am telling u now, only by that time it maybe too late. Just get trained and skilled in a vocational trade, add ur education and exposure to it and be creative about marketing urself and u are on top in nigeria. From nigeria ,you can catapault urself abroad, but if u think importing and selling is the best,by the time the shock hits u,u will have nothing to fall back on. I keep telling ppl , know the nitty gritty about the products u are selling,if you are selling phones ,get the technical know how about how to assemble and repair ,if it is fashion ,then get trained on how to repair and sew or even design. That is why the chinese and indians are on top, what they send to u in nigeria ,they know about it inside out .

Pardon me, but that's one of the worst advices you can give to a salary earner with an entrepreneurial spirit!

#Key fact

Salary is never enough!
Nobody gets genuinely wealthy just earning z salary

The point where you retire is when you are weakest. You have given your best years to build another's dream and you want to start building yours when you are 50? Many bankers before me have fallen into this trap only to realise too late.
Pardon me, but if he rose in 8 years to earn almost half a million, what do you think he will earn 8 years from now? Listen to me my brother, I am not against his dream but you have to reason! My salary 8 years ago is not what it is now, I too have entrepreneurial spirit, but should I walk up to the hospital now and quit or should I wait another 8 years with a very comfortable salary before quitting, ensuring that I will be comfortable and can have many tries at the venture. You see even if the venture fails, I'd have saved enough to try try try again and again. wink

Seems like the logical way to go about it but it has it's downside. Leaving the foray into business till after retirement could spell doom if anything goes wrong (which would most likely be the case). It's good to start early and make the mistakes early when there's still enough time to recover from it. That's what I feel anyway.
You have valid points smiley

It took me 8yrs to get here. Recruited by then Intercontinental Bank straight from NYSC Camp Ede, Osun State, my story has been one of good progression over the years. Today am a Middle Mgt staff taking home almost half a million naira in monthly benefits, yet it is time to type that letter and sign myself into entrepreneurial freedom!!!

The above is not written to brag, but to maybe motivate others who may be in my shoes... having great entrepreneurial skills yet fearful of what lies on the other side. I have tasted both worlds and I choose to fly. Let me mention however that quitting this job did not happen overnight, but is rather the result of a journey embarked upon over the last one year: a journey to Build a plan B. Today, that Plan B is the only Plan, raking in better revenues than the initial Plan A, yet am barely scratching the surface.

The feeling is indescribable as I wait for Monday... for on that day I will be giving my current employer the mandatory 30 days notice. In the coming days, I look forward empowering others to do exactly what I am doing now so that together we can contribute to rebuilding Nigeria

Do not drop plan A until Your Plan B is set. When I mean set is when you have already invested some mpney, getting a place, and people(employee), and after you have made it work for atleast 1 year. What is your working schedule? mon-fri? then sat and sun would be a working day for you then, just to cross-check and make a decision for the week.
If you don't have trust issues, get a partner with equal fitting or you invest, Your partner works as director of the company taking 30 percent. all you have to do is to loose a few sleep. You may even create another company after sometime. It is just my opinion.

Intelligent! This is the SMARTEST post so far.

I want to advise you,if you would take to it,before you resign, that idea of yours,test-run it first to see how it goes, give yourself sometime, while test running the idea so you don't lose on both ends cos I am sure by now your expenditure would have met your income if not have exceeded it. So,you've got to be sure that this your plan B would work and be ready to bear the consequences on your way to "freedom"...

Word!

You cannot be richer than your employer, neither do you become wealthy earning a salary.

Overused and abused lie.

Google recently poached Ruth Porat from Goldman Sachs and she will earn $70m (N14b) in 2 years. (http://ww2.cfo.com/people/2015/03/google-greets-new-cfo-ruth-porat-with-70m-pay-package/)

She is not an employee, not part of owners of Google.

Tell me if N14bn in 2 years is not wealth. Immediate sign-on bonus for her is $1m (N0.2b)

Coming to Nigeria, the CEO of Shell is an employee of Shell (not part of owners), and tell me the CEO of Shell is not wealthy.

I agree we should encourage entrepreneurship, but you guys go to the extreme in making your point.

Thanks... however on the contrary, bad bosses contributed immensely to starting my Plan B. They pushed me to the wall until it dawned on me that this was not my place and that took me back to the drawing board.

It's not within your power to determine how people will treat you. What's within your power is how you react.

I am okay finding out I was not the only one maltreated by bosses. My lady complains of office boss maltreatments too. Now coming from you too.

You are talking about manufacturing or doing a business where you fix your price not being in a distribution chain serving another manufacturer..

I'm building my network and plan to be free like you as well....I earned over 100k last month on the side, from just 20k in January......will earn 198k this month and it just keeps increasing every month.
I fail to understand why many people just wouldn't start a career in network marketing, when billionaires recommend it!

Its a good Idea but u need to keep ur decision to ur self man.
[size=13pt]very sensible comment.

no sane human being will ever show u his "concrete plan" if the plan is really giving him millions; not to mention bankers who are well known to be very secretive and shrewd with money and any wonderful ideas they have.

Anybody who offers to show you his plan is only out to make money from you. Infact, you are their plan; your money is their target. Q.E.D!!!

I do not agree with the "you-cannot-be-rich-if-you-an-employee" mantra too but it takes a long time and doesn't give one freedom of time. Although being wealthy via entrepreneurship takes time too but that time freedom gives it an advantage.

You sighted an example of ceo of shell. The person is rich (I envy am self) but not richer than his employee (Shell) as against your argument.

I did not argue that he was richer than Shell. Check the part of his argument I countered (which I bolded).

You don't need to be as rich as Shell to be rich. You're rich in all currency if you have N1bn in assets (cash and non-cash asset) to yourself.

Just as few salaried people become CEO of Shell, few entrepreneurs become Dangote.

95% of entrepreneurs fail anyway.
