Times are definitely not nice to Nigerians. The streets are not smiling. People are not happy. You could see from their sad faces.

I am an undergraduate working as a security guard at night to help myself financially.

So due to fuel situation and the economic effects, I have been trekking to and fro the place, because no money and the transport is very expensive now. Today, I didn't feel very strong to trek back to the place due to malaria seriously holding me down. I approached my neighbor who is earning over 100k+ salary, minus side hustling to help me with transport fare to go to work. Guess what? He started by laughing cheapishly. When he paused, he narrated how he trekked back from work on Friday, trekked to and fro work today being Monday and not sure how he'll get back to office tomorrow morning being Tuesday. That the new transport fare has eaten deeper into his small earning that even before middle of the month, the salary had long gone. Last night, the children drank Garri to go to bed and this morning, the children left to school drinking only Pap and he put only N100 Akara for each in their lunch boxes. Sad story. He added that due to the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal, retrenchment letters for 3 of his colleagues in the office are ready to be served by the end of the month, and more to go.

Who will rescue us, we don't know? Sad truth is that the money that will be generated from this subsidy removal will not be put to use to the benefit of the commoners. It's just a plot to generate more money for the elites/thieves.

Could you believe that nobody could borrow me N500 in the whole compound? Incredible.

Well, even when I wasn't feeling strong to trek coupled with all I'm passing through financially, I just had to trek which I did.

I picked up this job because instead of sleeping freely at night and when the rent expires, the landlord would come after me + plus all the bills heaped on me, I could rather spend the nights here reading my books, sleep (even though not as recommended) and still earn some money no matter how small.

Finally, I would say do well to help people when you can. People are going through a lot. Not untill the start falling in the street.

*In mama P. voice* - "God will see us through".

God bless all hard working Nigerians no matter the tough times we face.
I understand what you are going through because I've been there. Drop your account number make I send you 5k.

So, just drop a dummy mail I can reach you on.

I think I need to change the email attached to my Nairaland account. I'm sure most of the ones I responded to didn't also receive feedback.

If you messaged me here and I've not responded, please resend your messages in 1 hour time.

Hello all,

This weekend, I want to talk about freelancing and how to make money from it.
Since storytelling is one of the best ways of passing a message, I have invited a freelancer who started just like everyone late last year and is now doing well for herself. She is a Nigerian scriptwriter who started freelancing on Upwork without prior experience. We met late last year when she had just started her freelance journey and we would exchange ideas on different things. I feel most of us will be able to relate to her story and it is better having her here than telling the story.

Let me know if you are still following smiley

I felt some great relief seeing that you’re trying to connect with @Twoods. I absolutely loved reading your story (you’ve got great writing skills I must say!), and I genuinely pray and believe that you will do exceedingly well.

I was worried for a bit because it seemed like you were trying to connect with too many people at once (I know it’s the hustle spirit). America is indeed a land of opportunities and you need the RIGHT information from the RIGHT people. There’s so much information out there - you’ve got to learn to separate the wheat from the chaff!

Navigation from F1 to Greencard and then citizenship is a process. I really hope you got full funding for your program and other finances (accommodation etc) are well sorted as well. Just take everything one day at a time!, and don’t put too much hustle pressure on yourself. By all means, complete your graduate program, this will open doors for you.

I wish you God’s light on your path. I am certain you will do well!
Thank you for your kind words. If you are interested, we can connect.

Mister A is about 18 years, and he just completed High School. His parents have informed him that they do not have the financial strength to support him in higher education. However, Mr A wants to further his education but he has no clue of what to do next.

Here is what I would do if I found myself in a similar situation.

First, I will thank my parents and inform them that I would like to try things out on my own. Once I get their approval, I will look around to see if I can find survival jobs such as salesboy, factory job, nanny, teacher or any other one within my area. If I cannot find any, I will reach out to some of my high school classmates either through phone calls, in-person or through social media like Facebook or Twitter. Once we meet, I will ask them about things and what they have been up to. If I am able to get anything still, I will plead with my parents to let me stay with one of their relatives in another city so I can try my chances from there. If my parents do not agree, I will inform my religious leader (pastor or imam) to link me with a member of our religious group that may need such service. If this also fails, I will decide to assist the people in my community to clean their houses and wash their clothes weekly for a fee.

Once I get my first customer, I will plead with them to assist me in telling their friends and family about my services. I will also start posting on my WhatsApp and other social media pages. If I am lucky enough to have more customers, I will continue working in this way and saving most of my money while eating free food at home and living rent-free. Depending on how much I am able to save, I will do this for at least a year and I will ensure I learn a skill such as electrical installation or painting before I register for the university/polytechnic matriculation examination.

After my previous thread, I received a lot of questions on the thread and through PM. The questions mostly border on how one can start from almost nothing and still manage to make something positive out of their situation. For this reason, I have decided to open this thread to address such questions and other things related to them.

Coming from a disadvantaged background has both advantages and disadvantages. One of the main benefits is that you may have to mature at an early age and start assuming responsibilities for so many things in life. On the other hand, the greatest disadvantage is that your background may put you behind your peers for no fault of your own making. For this reason, you may suffer serious deprivations which may likely affect your life choices and achievements in terms of education, marriage, wealth accumulation, and even death!

Thankfully, the outcome of our lives is not entirely dictated by fate. Our actions, inactions, choices and chance all combine to shape how we turn out to be. Hence, I am working with the assumption that the little things you do today may have a huge influence on your life tomorrow.

I am having difficulty selecting the best strategy to adopt for this writing as I am trying to be as practical as possible. Let me see if we can find a suitable strategy as we move on.

I hope someone will benefit from the information I am about to share.

Caveat: Depending on your background, beliefs, and educational, some of the things that will be discussed here may not apply to your situation. In that case, please only act on what you believe is in your best interest and disregard the suggestions here.

Enough with the story, let’s start….

Come and pitch your tents here if you are interested 😉

Nice thread here. I've been looking forward for something like this on NL. I'm based in Texas, incase anyone has a question they want to ask about Texas. I don't know it all o. I'll just tell you the little I know, based on my experience.
Which area are you based in Texas? I'm also based in Texas. I sent you a DM.

OP even though you don't respond to the PM of people you believe will not benefit you, you can at least make the post you promised about online gigs that guarantee sustenance and wealth building.
It's the other way round. I responded to every pm but people don't follow up after I responded.

Starting and maintaining an active thread requires so much time. So, I will do the thread when I have some time here.

Didn't you guys notice that 247Hustler never mentioned the course he studied or his upwork niche? 🤔🤔🤔🧐🤨🧐
I have answered this question somewhere in one of my responses but people simply read a few pages and jump to ask the same questions.

I studied one of the social science courses, and my Upwork gig was in the Human Resources niche.

I understand why people are so focused on those two but it is important to state that they are not so important. The reason is because: a) one can freelance with any skill as long as they are good at it; b) your undergraduate discipline does not really matter when applying for study abroad.

Brosss, na bad belle be this now. Yes, one starts from ground Zero when they migrate to the US but with the right information one will rise over time. He sure is out of the trenches and will do fine if he moves with the right people and right information.

You are right about the army, but he cannot join until he has a greencard and that fast tracks him to citizenship.

Me, I feel say 247Hustler, use us do therapy session but no pay us for listening to his gist, way him express himself and release all the pains he had endures over the years.
Regardless, 247Hustler is out of the trenches and he has changed the trajectory of his life. I go advise make you follow the guy and check him out in 5 years time.

Baba,247 Hustler, I am guessing you are on F1, you get the hustle and I trust say you no go dull yourself. Work dey infact i saw a Night Shift foodpicker job for $24/hr im Dallas Texas area yesterday meaning when other dey sleep you fit dey cash out. Na to find who go borrow you dia paper, get a moderate paying job. In the US, once you have a good source of income, no body cares where you come from.

Also I guess say you young, when you are falling in love, try fall in love with the blue passport so your permanent residency go sure or run the paper as soon as possible.

As for F1 to H1B, i know say of you dey study Science Tech Engineering or Maths hope dey incomparison to others

In fact this is what i tell my cousin in Nigeria to do but the guy is waiting for someone to bless him with N20M so he can leave Nigeria even though his monthly salary is N60,000 per momth

Regardless, congrats on your journey in a new phase. I dont know you but I am proud of you. You will be fine in about 3-5 years, just trust the process.
Thanks for the heads-up. I sent you a pm.
