I believe it's even suppose not to be dark cos it's not been affected by the sun ray as well as free radicals just like the thigh/lap is usually not dark like other parts of the body exposed to sun ray

lol...OK, on a lighter note, our skin hs colour pigments, d one responsible for our black colour is known as melanin.. (albinos hv little) so in d buttocks, d muscles are known as gluteus muscles...and deh v a high content of dis melanin pigment...

it may be due to the large size of d gluteus..more like, the larger the muscle, the more concentration of melanin viz a viz..just like d muscles around d patella bone and d posterior part of d cubital fossa.. kind of thick and dark..

I may not be able to quote all your comments here but I need to emphasize that the point you are trying to make is wrong and has no anatomical basis. The pressure/heat theory which some 1 gave earlier is one of those many factors that could be responsible. Race and socio-economic status may also contribute to it.
