I wasn't commenting on proof or the absence of it but on the allegation as made. You can pick up an "honourary doctorate" from any remote or blacklisted university you like but if you insist on being addressed as "Dr" based on it someone is going to call you out on it.

Let's assume the university is blacklisted, does that make the honorary award become fake? The answer is "NO" as far as the degree was actually awarded by that institution.
The worst that can be said abt it is to call it "unrecognized" award.
It is only a fake award if he was never honored with it and he claims otherwise.

After months of delays, ostensibly to properly vet his appointees, President Buhari just appointed somebody that may turn out to be a total fraud. He appointed a certain "Dr." William Babatunde Fowler as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). In a news release signed by Femi Adesina, this red flag appears on the man's qualifications: "Fowler, who holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree [sic] of the Irish International University, is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and the Business Management Association of the United Kingdom." Well, Irish International University is a fraudulent, non-existent university ( see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/7175730.stm). Second, the Committee of Vice Chancellors in Nigeria has ruled that people with even legitimate honorary doctorates cannot prefix "Dr." to their names, as is the practice globally ( see http://www.farooqkperogi.com/.../finally-some-good-news...). I fear that if this Fowler's other qualifications are looked into, a big scandal may break out. His bachelor's degree, for instance, is said to be from the "University of Wisconsin" and his master's degree from "California State University." The trouble is, University of Wisconsin and California State University are multiple-campus universities; you can't just say you attended the University of Wisconsin without mentioning the location. The University of Wisconsin has 26 campuses, and California State University has 23 campuses. Something is fishy here!

One can only weep for the future of our country if we the youths reason like this. Here is a man who's allegedly discovered to have forged a doctorate degree appointed to head a commission and rather than demand for his dismissal we're making excuses.

The issue isn't whether the degree is relevant or was influential to his appointment but that he's a fraud. If truly the doctorate degree was fraudulently acquired how can we trust him with his new portfolio? Are you saying that we should overlook a crime as heinous as forgery just because he earned his other credentials genuinely?

In serious nations, this revelation, if true would cost him his new job and it doesn't only end there. He'd be banned from holding any public office and would have a criminal record that could render him unemployable for as much as 10years or forever.

You're right on that particular score but I wasn't particular about the word "fake". I was merely giving vent to my heartfelt dislike for people who parade themselves as "Dr" because of some honourary doctorate. It's a dumb thing to do really and I find it hard to take them seriously. That sort of thing should be done by illiterates like Gabriel Igbinedion and not educated people.

Anyway, you will find this Facebook post by Farooq Kperogi interesting. It appears SR knows what they're talking about.

Who's disputing if it's an academic or honorary doctorate degree? Whatever the degree is, is alleged to have been forged and not genuinely acquired. Should he retain his appointment if found to be fraudulently acquired? That's the question.
