Exactly what I was thinking. I've seen people spend lots of money chasing professional qualifications that they cannot back up with relevant experience.

I know someone who works as an accountant and is ACCA qualified, and so far has done many other exams such as CISA and some other certifications but yet is unable to be fully qualified because he doesn't have the relevant experience. Now he is talking about finding money to do oracle exam despite the fact he has no relevant experience but he believe it keeps him competitive.

I keep saying Nigerians are now cash cows for foreign professional qualifications and certifications bodies. Once we hear XX did YY exam and he earns ZZ money, we all rush to do the exam and ignore the fact the money he is paid has more to do with his experience rather than just the exam.

Sometimes I sit there and wonder what exactly works logically in Nigeria? Seems nothing follows logic. All these qualifications are foreign and yet we do them differently from people in the foreign countries where they were developed.

Do I blame the job seekers? Not really the whole system is upside down. Imagine KPMG advertising a graduate role in Nigeria and asking for ICAN qualified. For a graduate Can they do that in the UK or US? No KPMG in the UK employs graduates an trains them through their exams but as usual in Nigeria it's the other way round and no one bats an eyelid.

So you have this situation where out of desperation people hustle to do exam upon exam with no clear understanding of what or how they will use the knowledge and no relevant experience simply because they think it is the magic pill that will make the difference.

While the idea of going beyond the letters taught in the University can never be over-emphasized, I do not agree with your assertion that one has to acquire technical IT skills to be termed 'computer literate', that will be going for an over-kill.
With a real practical skills in MS Office suite, and may be some desktop graphic design tools, one is fully computer literate.

Now, for your candidate on the interview line whose degree is in Computer science, that is understandable, in fact, it is unforgivable for him not to be proficient in advanced technical skills, with one or two certifications to boot, but for every other class of job seekers who necessarily do not have any need for these advanced skills, it is a complete waste of money, and I am talking with experience.
Let's say for example, one aspiring for the job of a sales executive, customer service, medical representative, and the likes, what exactly will he do with skills in advanced programing and Data Base management on the job?

What are the opportunities for a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS)?

1. You will stand out when applying for jobs. Almost all companies in every industry use the programs in their day to day business. They use Microsoft Word to write every letter and report; Microsoft Excel for calculating their projections, budgets, analysing data and even some use the program to prepare their accounts; Microsoft PowerPoint for preparing their presentations.

2. Every professional office (Law, Estate Agent, Accountant etc) need certified MOS persons

3. As a certified MOS personnel, you can apply for jobs anywhere in the world where MOS certificate is required. MOS certification is globally recognised. There are websites like www.elance.com that offers freelance jobs anywhere in the world. You can live in Nigeria and work abroad because you can produce documents and reports that be easily used worldwide.

What are the opportunities for a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) 2?

4. You can assist university students produce their projects for a fee

5. Accountants that assist small businesses produce their monthly accounts, cash-flow statements, budget projections on a freelance basis.

6. You can offer training to those who need to learn Microsoft Office as well for a fee. Some workers in the offices do not even know how to use the Microsoft programs effectively.

7. No matter your profession, you need the knowledge of Microsoft Office to produce relevant documents. You cannot present hand written documents to your customers or clients.

It's crazy, even some confused people on the interview panel help to spread these lies.
Unless a fresh graduate is sure that his career path is aligned toward IT, then go ahead and get the certifications. Even at that, there is also need to focus on a clear path for a start; Networking, Programming/web design, DBA, or Multi-media graphics/animations. Stay on one of these lanes as a starter, along the line, with experience you can decide to diversify, which is understandable because sometimes as you grow in your career path, your passion changes.
For those folks that have nothing to do with IT as a career, save your energy from pursuing IT certifications. Rather focus on soft skills like emotional intelligence and effective communications.
I recommend Stephen Covey's '7 Habits of Highly successful people' as a must-read for every graduate that wants to get ahead in life.

Which computer package will suit someone that read marketing?

Brother, marketing graduates are one the most underrated and unappreciated, why? Because many think they just need to sell something and get paid or get commission, and many of them just dont do the right courses. But a company is useless without a good marketing department. By good, i mean reeeeally good. Now what advice can i give marketing graduates out there, please STEP UP YOUR GAME, go and learn DIGITAL MARKETING, i assure you, you will be almost indispensable if you're finally done and are good at it. With companies looking to add market value and increase their sales, this course is most recommended and is trending now and will continue to.
