All these b4 i an tagged computer literate....
Am not sure dangote himsef can use 2 of those

The op is not saying one should acquire all these above listed courses but a professional should pick any that is relevant to one's carrear. An example is the relativity of CAD to Engineering professions and some other packages to d choosen professions.

But one needs to start somewhere sha because a graduate that has not seen the dividend of the first degree and we're advising him/her to go for any of these which doesn't come free......

I won't advise anybody to learn any computer package that isn't related to his or her job function just for the sake of having a higher litereracy level in computer operations and applications.

On a normal day, basic computer knowledge, typing and MS Office package is enough. Especially in Nigeria where most fresh graduates aren't sure of what their first job will be. Just be very conversant with your computer for regular day to day use.

My advise, wait till you get a job in a career you enjoy, then, learn a computer package related to it.

Hello! don’t ever debase Microsoft Office packages. Why? Cos you know nothing about it from the way you talked in your article above. Microsoft Word on it’s own can take you 8 years to master everything in it excluding it’s developer level. What we learn in Nigeria is just a crumb of the Microsoft Word bread, talkless of Excel and so on. Don’t ever criticize what you don’t know.

The person that wrote this article knows nothing about Microsoft Office. He is still a toddler. He should go and make his research or keep quiet for ever.

continue decieving yourself. I bet u, the content of MS Excel alone cannot be mastered fully in a year not to talk of other office applications and other computer applications. And mind u, not all so called computer literate can operate Ms. Office tools. Why all these certification things and no job is popping up is because of the nature of our economy. Notwithstanding all these, those that will secure a job will and those with both masters degree, computer certificates and other professional degrees who will still be seeking for jobs will never cease to exist. The fact is that be on the safer side by getting the certificates if u can, but if not be prayerful and prepare your CV. Then submit it. Grace one day, may speak for you.

Study QuickBooks, Peachtree and Microsoft Excel. Take a certification exam to assess your proficiency

Acidosis:
Basic Office Application is Enough!

Some learnt Oracle, Quickbooks, etc Yet they can't correctly place their fingers on a keyboard. Some cannot type 1000 words in 30 minutes.

Employing an office secretary who learnt all the complex and 'sophisticated' softwares, without a sound understanding of basic formatting tools on a Microsoft Word app is SENSELESS.

I'd rather employ a sound and fast typist, than a sophisticated Cisco holder. Overall, it all depends on the role and nature of your job.

Personally, I have no regard for all these 3 days & 1 week certifications. I spent 3 months learning MsWord, Excel & PowerPoint. Some of you PMP/Quickbook holders earned your certification after a 6hour weekend training.

Currently doing this but i do not plan to stop there. I am going for Web Design or Oracle (Maybe Both). Why? Because the OP is right. Having basic IT skills is good but not enough especially if you cannot define what specific advantage your basic IT skill brings to an employer who probably expects you to have IT skills as a bare minimum.

On the other hand it depends on the field and nature of the job. I'd expect an accountant to do basic IT and look for specialist skills in an accounting related field. Why would you study accounting at undergrad level and then start doing a professional course in Web Design... where is the agreement? Having specialist IT skills is not the answer for all jobs.

Some people "who has seen computer knows sth or can operate ms apps" do not necessarily know how to produce useful and relevant documents. HR Managers are complaining that applicants only state they know how to use Microsoft Office programs on their CVs but are unable to produce any report on these "basic programs".
Re: Dear Job Seeker, Is Your Computer Literacy Enough? by sutton09: 11:29am On Aug 25, 2015
Almost all companies use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to complete their daily tasks. Knowledge and certification in any of these programs would place you above the crowd.

Even in some offices today, most workers rely on one Microsoft expert in their office or their IT dept to complete basic Microsoft tasks. Their work suffers until they receive help from these people.

A good knowledge of Microsoft Office would make you invaluable to most businesses

Learn and acquire all the computer packages and don't get a job where you can apply all your computer proficiency for just three months.. my brother everything will varnish from your head. You will be surprised that when you eventually get a job after one year of that your training, you will not be able to navigate your ways successfully again.

There are some specialist IT packages that will help you to be on your own, even if the job is not forthcoming. Courses like cisco is relevant if you are already in the field as Network specialist.
But webdesign/development can make you relevant as an individual on his own.

Very well said, but I won't agree with you. Our institutions should be checked, mine inclusive.(UNIBEN). I for one have always been an advocate of learning a professional course but where is the finance(in most cases) for that. A lot of people struggle just to get through B.SC with the hope of getting a job and getting those skills, but where is the job? When all they keep asking for is one certification to the other?. That person who according to u defended himself by saying they were only taught theory might just be saying the truth,u can't just rule that out. God help us all.

excellent point.... The truth is thyve made this whole job recruitment thing frustrating for sm1... Even to apply as a secretary, u are expected to have undergone some sort of certified course too. I happen to have a friend who was oppourtuned to travel out. He didn't finish his education!!!! He was given on the job training where he is working right now!. May God help us all......
