The Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC) has stated that it will scrap over 500 retail outlets due to inherent fraud along
its value chain.

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, stated this in Lagos State at the weekend
while addressing journalists on his agenda for the corporation.

According to him, "we started our retail business with about 23 filling stations of our own. But right now, we
have affiliates of about 500 filling stations.

"How do you grow from 20 to 500 in two years without institutional supports? What has happened is that there
is a lot of fraud nherent in that cycle and lots of products disappear along the
value chain. So we will
revoke the retail licenses to our affiliates and focus on our retail outlets."

He also said that "until a scenario came in, the amount of money that was being put into the retail business was
affected and nobody was collecting it.

Good call Dr Ibe. Good call.

Many of these NNPC labelled stations are fraud-laden. As an unassuming driver you go into one of these stations not know that their machines have been caliberated to rip customers off of their hard earned cash.

Furthermore, the attendants are not as courteous unlike Mobil and Totl.

Can you imagine??! This decision is stupidity with a capital 'S'.

Instead of stepping up surveillance and using tracking systems that can be monitored remotely to prevent fuel diversion by the oil marketers, as well as increasing DPR's powers of enforcement, they want to scrap 500 petrol stations! shocked sad A move that will lead to fuel scarcity in many areas, and will bring back the queues. shocked angry

Not only that, the existing 20 stations will now engage in hoarding or round tripping in order to make more money! smh... *chai*

Any nation that wishes to enjoy the fruits of development and civilization, must follow the golden rules of its scripture as a national policy and culture. This is what we lack in the past administrations.

Same way body language is giving us 20 hours a day electricity. While some Nepa workers will probably lose their jobs because of this newness ,it will save 150 million Nigerians money from buying fuel and diesel and also the headache of epileptic power. If it's going to take some small sacrifices for ALL Nigerians to enjoy a better quality of life, then so be it. There is never success without sacrifices. Nigeria will be great soon!

The stations are more like franchises with the nnpc logo. They are not stations built by nnpc. There is one just outside festac. It used to be a total station, then two years ago it was rebranded as an nnpc station.

The dealers will simply rebrand and continue either as independents or under other marketers.

The remaining twenty stations are the true nnpc mega stations.

I've always been suspicious at the rate which NNPC retail outlets spring. Recently while going to Abeokuta, when I got to Ifo, within ten minutes drive I counted three NNPC retail outlets. These outlets sometimes programme their dispencers to defraud customers.

Maybe if you read the article with an open mind, then you would have found the quote "How do you grow from 20 to 500 in two years without institutional supports?"

Obviously, the NNPC never had the capacity for such surveillance as at the time they were giving out these licenses indiscriminately.
