Indications emerged Wednesday that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir David Lawal, has come under fire from Presidency over a provocative claim he made during a thanksgiving service in Abuja last Saturday.

Lawal, who assembled top party and Christian leaders for a thanksgiving service in Abuja had paid glowing tribute to the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu and the former Acting National Chairman, Bisi Akande, as being responsible for his nomination to Buhari for appointment as the SGF.

He also said that his choice as a Christian would not have been possible if the nomination had been left to Northern leaders to make.

At the event attended by the Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Lawal said: “I am Secretary to the Government today, because those people-Tinubu and Akande- that I mentioned were the very first to put the idea in the mind of the President.

“They were the ones that made it possible because if it has been left to northerners, it is doubtful if they will take a Christian man to make Secretary to the Government of the Federation”.

But competent sources said that barely two days after Lawal had made the remark, angry leading Muslim leaders and northern elite, who felt insulted by his claim, stormed the Presidential Villa and complained to President Muhammadu Buhari and asked to discipline the SGF for being careless with his speech.

He is only saying the obvious. For those that have affinities or acquaintance with the core northerners you will understand the way they treat those from the middle belt.

Recently the former Attorney general to the Kaduna State government said, thank God for GEJ who gave them a say in the north as prior to this time they had to travel to Sokoto for any matter, to meet a man that doesn't know about their existence.

Whilst that may be true. Such divisive utterances shouldn't be coming the SGF. More often than not, political correctness is necessary when you're so high up the ladder. Now Buhari has the latitude to remove him for 'heating up the polity'. Their favorite phrase.

Anyway, everyone is entitled to say whatever s/he wants to say. I believe that Babachir must have had a reason for saying what he said however absurd. I am also of the opinion that what he said is a true representation of facts. Left to the North, no Christian minority, even from their zone, can cling any political position. It needed to be said and he said it. He said it in a church and not a political gathering. These factors come to play in understanding why he did.

However, not unlike Nigerians, people must stir up still waters over a simple issue. Omonnakoda, see your brothers!!!
