Loool.

Women for you right there. They love the misogynist tunes and can recite the lyrics word for word.

But turn around and start blaming guys for being misogynistic. grin

Apart from Wale, Kendrick, and J. Cole - Schoolboy Q, Absoul, Jay Rock, Fashawn, Vince Staples, Vic Mensa, and Joey Bada$$’ are also decent.

Cool.

I'm good with that idea.

I did history in Baptist Academy then, not knowing I was going to end up studying history as a discipline at the University level.

Apart from the academic side of it, studying it creates a sense of attachment to one's culture history.

True.I believe If all Schools in the South-west made Yoruba history compulsory, the denigration of Yoruba culture and religion would have been minimal

I also feel even Yoruba historians/scholars are guilty of the issue of waiting for reds to cosign us

If our historians/scholars are guilty, then what do we expect from the average Yoruba man

But what can we do about the issue of waiting for reds to cosign us?

We Yorubas especially

What steps do we need to take?

I once suggested the idea of making Yoruba history compulsory in South-west schools

There's nothing we can do.

We live in the era of western civilisation and they are the ones who control everything. grin

Can't you see how they treat Africa like their tube-baby, with a lot of black slaves worshipping and licking their arses?

They have to cosign us for our own people to like it. grin

You have to listen to their better tunes first, create an interest, before trying out their other joints.

After that, they'll start growing on you. Even with Wale, I had the opportunity of listening to his "Nike Boots" (classic tune) in 2007, before becoming a proper fan. Before that, I wasn't really feeling his first tune on hiphopgame back in the day and he already had a buzz back then. I'm talking about 05/06 when I just got into college.

That's the same for every artist, hence we all get drawn to them after listening to their hit records.

I guess we all have different listening patterns.

For me, just one line takes me or breaks me off on my first listen.

I mostly check for the brilliance in just one verse or bar before I bother about a whole song or discography in entirety.

It's just the problem with Africa and utter poor governance, and the lack of understanding on how history/culture/tradition and education must be intertwined for the mind to grow and for proper development.

How many archaeologists/anthropologists of Nigerian origin are in Nigeria? Apart from African Americans, the majority of folks interested in our history are white folks. And they're the ones out there excavating everything to know who we're. So whatever they say is golden. grin

Personally, I just watch out for verses I can relate to and how brilliant the person is when it comes to putting words together.

Let me use Jay Rock as an example. The first time I heard his tune about bloods, I wasn't really feeling him. Then when he released "All my life" - I just locked in from there based on these lyrics, cos I can relate:

I was on the block right, wasn't in my right mind/
Just a young nyggah, hustlin', tryna get mines/
Movin' with the 9 double m/
Nyggahs like "You don't really wanna fvck with him"/
Yeah, young teenager, infatuated with paper/
Yeah I had to get it, cos momma, she wasn't able/
Black and white TV set, no cable/
Forties in the fridge, chicken noodles on the table/
I wasn't born with a silver spoon/
Child of the ghetto, raised off a different tune/
Watchin' Bob Barker in my living room/
If "The Price Was Right", I could get you a whole living room/
Yeah, them was my gutter ways back in the gutter days

Ajimobi: sentiment, bane of growth

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has called for a paradigm shift from the culture of tribal sentiment, corruption and tax evasion.

The governor spoke yesterday at the convocation lecture of the University of Ibadan, entitled: “Challenges of Good Governance in an Emerging Democratic Setting: The Nigerian Perspective”.

He decried the wide gap between the rich and the poor, which he said was antithetical to the nation’s growth and development.

According to him, for things to work well, there must be a complete shift from the status quo towards sanitising the public sector and the political space.

The governor identified the challenges to good governance as under-developed institutions, poor political governance and representation as well as weak social structure and institutions.

He said: “Many Nigerians do not yet understand the workings of democracy. This is why people can be bribed to vote for a candidate of questionable character.

“There have been instances where people without education or adequate knowledge won elections against good candidates. Rigging and snatching of ballot boxes are common in Nigeria.

“This has led to poor representation. There is no way such incompetent candidates, who won elections through rigging can perform well.”

Ajimobi added that the country’s social structure and institutions were fraught with problems.

Listed among such problems were ethnicity, tribal sentiments and vote-buying.

The effects of these challenges, according to the governor, weredisregard for the rule of law and human dignity, general indiscipline among the populace, bribery and corruption and wide inequality between the rich and poor.

“In a cursory look, Nigerian economy is under-developed. It is sad to note that since Independence in 1960, Nigeria is not food-secured.

“A country that cannot feed its citizenry but imports rice, fish, toothpick and other food items is not on the path of good governance.

‘’We need to re-examine the concept of true federalism and operate it accordingly. What we have in place now encourages a system of robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

As a way out of the quagmire, the governor recommended a robust town-gown synergy for community public impact, as well as mass mobilisation of the citizenry in pursuit of good governance.

I'm sorry sir but that verse right there is very basic.

No word play and in fact, his story telling ability is poor (maybe he makes up for this with delivery).

No wonder his reach hasn't expanded mucH.

It's not basic cos he was telling a story. You don't have to be super-duper lyrical when telling a story - it's just how you tell it.

Let me throw a verse considered to be one of the greatest, if the not the greatest verse ever in hiphop there and you'll see that it looks basic as well - but the story the verse tells is super-deep.

AZ's verse for "Life's a biitch" off Nas' legendary illmatic album:

Visualizing the realism of life in actuality/
Fvck who's the baddest, a person's status depends on salary/
And my mentality is money-orientated/
I'm destined to live the dream for all my peeps who never made it/
Cos yeah, we were beginners in the hood as 5 Percenters/
But something must've got in us cause all of us turned to sinners/
Now some resting in peace and some are sittin' in San Quentin/
Others such as myself are tryna carry on tradition/
Keeping this Schweppervescence street ghetto essence inside us/
Cause it provides us with the proper insight to guide us/
Even though we know somehow we all gotta go/
But as long as we leaving thievin'/
We'll be leavin' with some kind of dough, so/
Until that day we expire and turn to vapors/
Me and my capers will be somewhere stackin' plenty papers/
Keeping it real, packing steel, getting high/
Cos life's a biiitch and then you die

N.B: Schweppervescence isn't a big vocab - it's a street slang for simplicity/simple from how you'll opt for soda schweppes in the club if you want to keep it simple.

Verses from Joe Budden off 'The way you loved me track'

Verse 1

First off let me shout out the fam, y'all so gracious
Been chilling in the room for growth, it's so spacious
Getting to the money, counting these old faces
Like I found the smoking gun in cold cases (nah)
Them dark thoughts never got to 'em still
I'm like the legendary Robin Will
Even though I understand I never dealt with the pain like that
A knot from that same rope, but I don't hang like that
We had a couple break-ups - gotta respect Cause and I'll hit the reset button
You try to reset Budden, it's real
My accomplishments, already show 'em how I deal with the consequence
And you can ask Consequence
She reached out via text, like "what up with the guy?"
Which is weird, it's been a year since we fraternized
Still I made my way back in her life
Only to prove to myself I wouldn't Bleep up twice
We reminiscing, thinking hella back
You had to watch me with her, but to hell with that
Cause I think that me carrying that thought kinda washed me with her
And even that's cool, cause me and you is not me and her
I took a little hiatus, hope you could see the change
I was too high to say this, how could I explain?
Thought my mouth was quiet, my mind was like a Ferguson riot
Why it only get worse when I'm in private
Were we victims to the game, trying to do it over
Here's the gift for an exchange
It's timeout for the public these niggas won't know a thing
So we keep each other blocked on Twitter, it's not a game
Like a picture in a frame for now
Drunk models, couple Swishers and a stack here

Verse 2

She said she wanna set boundaries
Can't continue to have you surrounding me
Cause that'll lead to you on this couch pounding me
That'll bring them feelings back, that's just out of bounds to me
It's been years, last bitch ain't come around to me
Send my tone of voice down, like you speaking down to me
Said I said some things to begrudge you
But I can't ask to not be judged, then judge you
She said, all this time I've been screaming "Bleep You"
When she implies I can't move on, I'm stuck, too
Blood flowing, there's an adrenaline rush, too
Everytime I'm tryna leave it's when you're in a rush, too
She said, looking back I can see how you was gaming me
Which is fine, I can see how you could feel there
Which means, I just gotta ask you one question now
If it was game, tell me why them feelings still there?
I know the answer to that: you still fallin'
You never felt so strong, it feels foreign
Probably got me saved in her phone as Phil Collins
Hear it in the air of the night, it's still callin'
Everytime you see me, a couple of bills on him
Got rich, then did it again, we still ballin'
You ain't gotta respond to that
If you did it would look like it's a con to that
I'm so far beyond that
Chillin' with a couple of hoes that like hoes
That like niggas that don't act like hoes
I don't say that cause I'm vain or some strangers can know I'm the man
We not fuckin' em, sometimes it's better knowin' you can't
She come runnin' back everytime she throw in the can
Just to holla when she feel like not a soul understand
Baby, I already proved that I ride out
You can't bear to be hurt again so you hide out
You ain't gotta say that, I know you inside out
We communicate so well when all the pride's out
You gotta give it one more go, we ain't tried out
Nah that love wouldn't a been real if it died out
Joey

Joe Budden again 'More of Me'

Verse 2

You know some niggas never learn
Some learn and never apply, but wait
Some apply but never teach
My only right to preach, I spent time being each
Grab your magnifying glass I need y’all to look closer
At the only dude to do every drug and get lower
If niggas knew a third of all the weight that he shouldered
They’d know it’s an insult to think I’m only bipolar
I got a unique talent, don’t know how I obtained it
How do I sustain it? Can’t even explain it
I get more info from words that aren’t spoken
More fixated on people or things when they are broken
I used to think everybody was pure
Now I’m busy trying to come up with everybody’s cure
And that mindset led to glory
It be the people you help most, normally do the most harm
Made it my whole life, most times I ain’t bite
So no need to stick to a script that I didn’t write
Preconceived notions, nothing less than a failure
Base your’s off of the cover and miss the best-seller
While I’m at it, let me tell you about this angel I met
She was fly, from every angle was fresh
And the way that she was jamming to the song called ‘I’m Not Perfect’
Made me wanna know what her imperfections were
Now listen, and they weren’t hard to find y’all
Both parents were addicts like mine are
Mi-nor, but her story wasn’t new to me
Most of life, shorty was homeless like I used to be
Could tell she never felt appreciated
Looked too much like her dad, was her mom’s least favorite
Picture a bond supposed to be sacred
Looking up at your mom’s eyes and seeing hatred
Pop left when she was young
Well she still young and he still gon’ keep it 100
While I’m just amazed that a woman so beautiful
Could through such ugliness and not become it
World keeps spinning, learned sinners keep sinning
And I can’t even tell her some fights ain’t fight worthy
Cause my pops got 20 years clean, but her pops got 20 years dirty
She moved to Jersey where he happens to reside
Thinking they’ll be closer but it’s only fiction
Cause she so young, all it does is cause friction
God picked the right nigga though, to teach about addiction
Years ago she should’ve been on homie watch
So check the time out, just not on mommy’s watch
Cause someone beat her ass for years, someone calmly watched
Na, stepdaddy beat her ass, mommy watched
I keep her closer than ever she always next to me
Bisexual, comfortable sexually
I’m talking more comfortable than she should ever be
Especially considered the fact she was molested three
Times, somethings a picture doesn’t tell
Can’t be worth a thousand words or her pictures might yell
Ya’ll see a pretty face on Instagram
I see a girl that should be scarred, never lent a hand
There go God’s work again how’d he know I need that?
How the Bleep did he pick her to walk me through a relapse?
Believe me, shorty I’ll kill for you if need be
And I need you much more than you would ever think you need me
What I do for you is tangible, shit that you could gain
You for me, not understandable, it’s shit you can’t explain
Some folk don’t see the effect in that
Some say I’m using you, they’d be correct in that
But what for they’ll never know
It’s deeper than nude pics, it’s something I would never show

Story telling should have one glued, the lows and the peak.

I pray Joe Budden never stops rapping.

But Biggie was more of a rhymer and a story teller than a super-duper lyrical guy with crazy metaphors and multi-syllables words tho. I can post gazillion of Nas' verses where he kept it super simple/basic just to tell a story, but I'll pick a verse from "Surviving the time". J. Cole wasn't even super-lyrical in his best song on Forest Hill Drive called "No role modelz" - and Joe Budden just always overdo it, hence it's very easy to get lost when listening to him. You have to be able to mix it and get folks to relate to certain things easily, that's the beauty of rap music.

Let me give you short verses from lyrical legends where they kept it simple to tell a story:

Nas (Surviving the times)
I'm with Akinyele in the street, trying to get us a deal/
G Rap tried to get us to sign to Cold Chill/
But Fly Ty didn't have the contract we wanted/
Clark Kent just signed Das, he didn't want us/
Russell said I sounded like G, the nyggah fronted/
Reef and Matty C offered me a little money/
Shiit a little funny, feel a little laughter/
Rebel of Hip-Hop coming through a white rapper

J. Cole (No role models)
I want a real love, dark skinned Aunt Viv love/
That Jada and that Will love/
That leaves a toothbrush at your crib love/
And you ain't gotta wonder whether that's your kid love
Nyggah I don't want no biitch from reality shows/
Out-of-touch-with-reality ho.es/
Out in Hollywood, bringin' back 5 or 6 ho.es
Fvck em then we kick em to the do', nyggah you know how it go

Jay Z (Hardknock life)
I don't know how to sleep, I gotta eat, stay on my toes/
Gotta a lot of beef, so logically, I prey on my foes/
Hustling's still inside of me, and as far as progress/
you'd be hard-pressed, to find another rapper hot as me/
I gave you prophecy on my first joint, and y'all lamed out/
Didn't really appreciate it, till the second one came out

Big Pun (It's so hard)
Rollin with the Squad, we like gods/
Catch us at the bar-de-bar-de-bars/
Strip bars in Miami, almost came home with the Grammy/
Next year, bringing home three for the family/
Watch me, you can catch it live on the Hitachi/
Poppin shiit like a Nazi, iced out like DeBiase
Fvck that, Liberace/
F.o.x Versace, somebody stop me

I can go on and on. That's why I'm not a fan of Eminem. The art of storytelling needs simplicity sometimes, so folks can relate. I was going to post legendary verses from Jadakiss and Styles P cos no one can paint better pictures than these two when they're telling stories. But I'll stop here for now. grin grin

Sorry house, we're just discussing hiphop as Yoruba sons. grin grin

But I'll stop here for now. grin grin

No Role Models is actually a solid track but as far as story telling goes, I'll pick 'Love yours'

Here's an excerpt from the first verse:

It's beauty in the struggle , ugliness in the success
Hear my words or listen to my signal of distress
I grew up in the city and though some times we had less
Compared to some of my niggas down the block man we were blessed
And life can't be no fairytale, no once upon a time
But I be God damned if a nigga don't be tryin'
So tell me mama please why you be drinking all the time?
Does all the pain he brought you still linger in your mind?
Cause pain still lingers on mine
On the road to riches listen this is what you'll find
The good news is nigga you came a long way
The bad news is nigga you went the wrong way
Think being broke was better

Joe Budden is a highly skilled rapper. He is a combination of word play and ability to tell stories. Not to mention his ability to touch or raise emotions with his tracks like it is R&B.

I love his talent cool

For me, biggie is the blue print for rap. Every dude I schooled to rap, I often start them off with biggie. If you can master his pattern and how he constructs his witty lines, then you're gone.

I would say Rakim is the rhymer here, that man would pull rhymes out of nowhere when you expect him to be boxed in the corner.

Nas through his skill made everyone feel like they were in New York seeing the trains, the hoodies and timbs, the project life etc. His picture painting skill is top notch.

Check this verse from 'Rewind'

Listen up gangstas and honeys with ya hair done
Pull up a chair hon' and put it in the air son
Dog, whatever they call you, god, just listen
I spit a story backwards, it starts at the ending

The bullet goes back in the gun
The bullet hole's closin this chest of a nigga
Now he back to square one
Screamin, "Shoot don't please"
I put my fifth back on my hip
It's like a VCR rewindin a hit
He put his hands back on his bitch
My caravan doors open up
I jumped back in the van and closed it shut
Goin reverse, slowly prepared
My nigga Jungle utters out somethin crazy like, "Go he there"
Sittin in back of this chair, we hittin the roach
The smoke goes back in the blunt, the blunt gets bigger in growth
Jungle unrolls it, put his weed back in the jar
The blunt turns back into a cigar
We listen to Stevie, it sounded like heavy metal fans
Spinnin records backwards of AC/DC
I give my niggas dap, jump out the van back first
Back upstairs, took off the black shirt
I'm in the crib with the phone to my ear
Listen up so y'all can figure out the poem real clear
The voice on the phone was like, "Outside right we"
So with my mouth wide, holdin my heat
Bullets I had plenty to squeeze, plenty for ya
'Cause Jungle said, "Block your on enemies the"
Hung up the phone, then the phone rang <phone ringing>
I'm laid in the bed thinkin 'bout this pretty young thing
Who left, she came back, her clothes just fell to the rug
She fell to my bed and gave me a hug
I told her, "No hell"
She talkin 'bout, "Me kiss"
Bobbed her head then spit the nut back in my dick
Started suckin with no hands, a whole lotta spit
Then got up and put her bra back on her tits
Got fully dressed and told me, "Stressed really I'm"
Picked up her Gucci bag and left her nigga behind
Walkin through the door, she rang the bell twice
I vomited Vodka back in my glass with juice and ice
The clock went back from three, to two, to one
And that's about the time the story begun
That's when I first heard the voicemail on the cell
It said, "Son we found that nigga we gotta kill"
[Message Beep]
Ay yo son, ay yo son, you hear me, you hear me?
Listen man, this dude right on the block, right now, man
I found him, right now, I see him right now!
Let's kill him)
[Message Beep]
"Yo, this Nas, leave it. Peace"

As much as I love and admore Sean Carter Jay Z, I stoppedtaking him serious after Black Album. Out of his large catalogue, Reasonable Doubt is the only album I kick it to till today. I don't skip a track on that work.

I religiously follow rappers like

Talib

Common (I had all his works except I think the first album - I lost them when my pc crashed).

Big L (I have his 2 albums)

Jada and styles are some of the d0pests but styles is a better story teller, Jada has the delivery.

There's nothing we can do.

We live in the era of western civilisation and they are the ones who control everything. grin

Can't you see how they treat Africa like their tube-baby, with a lot of black slaves worshipping and licking their arses?

They have to cosign us for our own people to like it. grin

If SW wants a Yoruba history course in a Yoruba, even the west can't stop it.

if western nations can adopt Yoruba language courses in their University/Grade school curriculums, what's their business with Yoruba history courses?

Unless you'e talking about Northerners.
