The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has drawn the attention of Nigerians to the ‘harmful consequences’ of the unabated negative statements from the very father of the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari, on the economy and the general image of the country.
The party said “it is worrisome that in the last six months, the President, instead of making efforts to harness resources and grow the economy, has rather continued to apply himself, perhaps unwittingly, to demarketing the nation and scaring away investors through negative labelling of Nigerians and unwarranted unhealthy portrayal of the nation’s economy”.
The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, on Sunday said the President’s unwary statements have become very serious clog in the wheel of progress, eroding the confidence of both domestic and international investors in the Nigerian economic and social system.
“In the last six months, our President has only succeeded in discouraging foreign investors with his continued misrepresentation of our country as a business unfriendly environment, where most of the citizens are basically corrupt, dishonest, and cannot be trusted.
“Whereas we have restated our total support for the war against corruption, we insist that Mr. President’s unceasing blanket negative labelling of citizens, in a country where millions of honest and hardworking individuals/firms are genuinely contributing daily to the development effort, is indeed a disservice and injurious to the nation and the people.
“Furthermore, Mr. President’s recent announcement to the world that the nation, with its abundant human and natural resources, is broke and cannot pay cabinet ministers not only sends a discouraging signal to the domestic and international business community, but also exposes the ineptitude of the present administration to meaningfully and sincerely exert itself and work with industrious and innovative investors to create and manage wealth.
“We ask; how can any reasonable investor still have the confidence to invest in a country where the President himself continues to alert that his country reeks of corrupt people and that the government is broke to the extent it cannot pay cabinet ministers?
“Is the President not directly advising investors against having confidence in Nigeria and the system, and that they risk not being paid for jobs awarded by government at any level?
“More worrisome is the fact that Mr. President most times, makes his damaging comments in international fora with potential investors in attendance to the extent that reminds one of the proverbial father who, in the presence of potential suitors, often portrays his daughters as wayward and yet constantly complain of their inability to find husbands.
“Indeed, this is not the way to go, Nigeria is a country blessed with abundant human and natural resources. What we need at the moment is a serious, innovative and practical approach with the capacity to harness the resources and create wealth for the benefit of all, instead of an apparently laidback scapegoat tactics with outworn excuses and unhelpful comments.
“May we remind Mr. President that even in the darkest period of our economic challenges, successive administrations made efforts in steadying the economy, while always reassuring our citizens and the international community of the strength and economic potentials of our great nation.
“We know that in the desperation to cover its apparent lack of economic plan, this administration has positioned cabinet ministers, upon inauguration to concentrate on diversionary blame game on the past PDP administration. But even this political deceit cannot combat the unpalatable consequences of Mr. President’s damaging utterances on the image of the nation and its economy.
“Finally, we wish to remind the President and those around him that Nigerians, by the 2015 elections, have committed the fate of the country in his hands for the next four years and are not willing to accept excuses for any economic failures under his watch,” the party said.

We live in a world where LIES are more pleasant to the ears than the TRUTH.
This is the road PDP took us for 16 years and see where we are. The same party claims stealing is not corruption. Nigerians, aren't we fed up with the lies and deciet?

For the first time, we have a president who will say it as it is not call "red" black. His approach might be too foward, but i think this has to do with his military background. The president is not a politician but a nationalist.

The President is the Chief Marketer of the Nation. Is he is constantly saying to potential investors that his country is broke, his country is corrupt etc, who in their right frame of mind will want to invest in such an environment except of course those who will want to exploit the situation to their advantage. We are only asking that he puts the nation's best foot forward and if he thinks they isn't any, then he should resign. Our collective destiny is not about APC or PDP. The young graduate who can not get a job or feed this morning does not care if it is PDP or APC. He wants a solution.

I am trustworthy. Our leaders haven't been trustworthy. PMB has not been 100% honest with us. I hate to remind us that we didn't get to the bottom of PMB's certificate issue. We have swept it under the carpet. The right thing would have been for him to demand for it now and show it to Nigerians. But he wouldn't do that.

What's the use declaring your asset without making it public? When PMB is saying that nigerians are corrupt, does he include himself and his cronies? Amaechi, Fashola, Tinubu, Atiku, Silva, just to mention a few, are they better in anyway than those you mentioned?

We are corrupt. India is corrupt. China is corrupt. Pakistan is corrupt. Brazil is corrupt. America is corrupt. I can go on till eternity. The difference is what the original poster said.

It is not the duty of the president of Nigeria, to remind the world and all its people, that Nigerians are not trustworthy. It is his duty to find a way to market our country, and not to ridicule us by any means through unguarded utterances.

PMB might not know it but such talks like 95% and 5%, untrustworthiness, coupled with perceived selective justice and fight against corruption is exactly what he needs to avoid. At 72, I don't think he has any reason to fail. This is an opportunity to do good and set a standard, politically, morally, and personally.

I wish him a great reign. God bless the president of Nigeria.

Why are you so engrossed with irrelevant things? Is it about certificate? Could he have become a General without anything? Have you 4gotten this same man led this same country once? What exactly has your professors and PH.D holders done for us? This is all about competence and inner strength. And not paper work. Who asked OBJ for his certificate when he ruled for 8 years? Let's think please!

Take a gainful pain to track PMB's record and see if he's corrupt or not. We are always embittered by the truth. Aren't we broke? Aren't we corrupt? Though, difficult, sincerity begets respect and trust. Have you forgotten what Pastor Bakare said concerning Y'aradua; "a sick president cannot lead a dying nation. The man I saw on October 1st giving the presidential speech is sick"! Was there any iota of lie in that statement?

To your first statement, I'll reply you by saying; "If you want to test a man's character, give him POWER"! You can never tell that to any rational being and he/she will believe you. Have you been tried and tested? Have you tasted power? Have you been left alone in a room filled with raw cash? Mouth and facial looks no do am o! I salute people like Prof Dora (NAFDAC), Late Y'aradua and PMB; these are people who were tested and trusted. God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria!

He didn't start now. He has been on it. We warned you that he is a man who believes only Buhari is innocent even when he is far from being that but you wouldn't listen. You guys actually knew about his utterances which was why you never allowed him to speak more than a minute during campaigns. He is only desperate for leadership and the honour that goes with it. He knows nothing about leadership and international engagement. I just hope that a few of the guys he appointed will keep this country from collapsing. Dance the surugede...

Take it easy nah. For a sound democracy and meaningful development to thrive, there is need for an opposition. And, it can't be buried or avoided practically.

PDP and lies - even if the president says the economy is growing and everything is fine, u all will still criticize and call him a Liar. The truth will help potential investors to understand and prepare for the challenges they are likely to face and also enable them to understand what they will need from the govt in order to survive.

I rooted for change, now we have change. But I must say PDP is very right in this case, if u call ur cloth rag pple will treat is as such. Metuh came with a very constructive criticism devoid of insult. We need this type of opposition to keep the ruling party on its toes.

I guess buhari has no idea the consequences of negative speech to this country's economy. Even if what he said is what is happening currently, it should'nt be made known to foreigners, it should rather be an internal affairs. No wonder he was avoiding a lot of presidential debates during his campaign. Had it been Nigerians had better choice, he should'nt have been elected.

which country has no problem? Let me ask you, do you go about telling people about your problems and weaknesses? My friend no matter what you try to brand yourself, my colleague (an English man) actually referenced this Buhari's speech to prove that Nigeria is not a favourable place to do business and he even rubbed it in my face that my president said so!! I bet you don't know how humiliating that was? u need to step out of Nigeria to understand that every negative word or sentence goes a long way in affecting US!! Oyinbos will always cover their weaknesses, they do this so good that people think oyinbo place is heaven on earth and scramble and even risk their life to come over only to realise that the difference is just exchange rate!! Buhari needs to stop painting Nigeria black, he is no longer campaigning instead let him get to Work and fix things!!!
it seems I will have to look at other potential africa countries, this president just destroyed everything, how can one convince an investor......one was willing to come over but changed his mind and now the president just poured acid on everything with that statement.....
